The resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has been welcomed by Tamil Nadu Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar, who views it as a victory for students. However, Kumar expressed that the resignation alone does not address the pressing issues associated with the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). He reiterated the state’s longstanding demand for the examination to be abolished, emphasising that this change would provide a genuine solution for students.

Kumar, while speaking to reporters, stated that although the resignation is a significant step, it is not the end of the struggle. He insisted that educational authority should reside at the state level rather than the central government. “We do not need NEET. Education should be a state matter; all rights should be transferred to the states,” he emphasised. This focus on state jurisdiction aligns with their ongoing protests against NEET.

Protests Erupt Following Resignation Announcement

In Chennai, celebrations erupted among protesters following the announcement of Pradhan’s resignation. The protests, prominent in Tamil Nadu, have been driven by a unified demand to eliminate NEET, which many constituents perceive as an unfair examination system. The recent developments have reignited discussions on the educational policies of the central government and the need for reforms that reflect the concerns of the students.

Pradhan announced his resignation with the intention of prioritising the interests of the students, stating he did not want them to feel “trapped in a web of confusion.” He highlighted his long history in the education sector and expressed his commitment to reform and improved educational experiences for students nationwide. His resignation was portrayed as a crucial step towards aligning policy with student needs.

Comments from various quarters indicate that this resignation is seen as a culmination of ongoing tensions surrounding NEET and educational governance in India. The public response suggests a strong desire for systemic change that focuses more on student well-being rather than bureaucratic hurdles.

Actions Taken by Government Regarding NEET Examination

In his resignation letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pradhan mentioned the government’s proactive measures after irregularities were discovered in the NEET-UG examination held on May 3, 2026. He reported that the investigation into these irregularities was promptly transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and the examination was cancelled, with plans for a re-examination announced.

Pradhan’s comments also indicated changes for the future, as he stated that from the following year, the NEET examination would transition to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format. This shift is intended to address technical and administrative challenges currently faced within the examination system.

The developments coincide with recent dialogues held between spokespersons of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh, where both sides discussed the extensive grievances raised by students. The outcome of these discussions could further influence policy changes aimed at addressing the issues surrounding NEET.

In an incident occurring in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu, on July 24, over 50 workers of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) were detained after they protested outside the Amirtharaj Theatre. The protest was triggered by the alleged screening of a video that mocked the electoral defeat of the party’s candidate, Vijayaprabakaran, during a special screening of the recently released film ‘Jana Nayagan’, featuring actor and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay.

The demonstrators called for an apology from Selvam Amirtharaj, a former Congress MLA, claiming that the video was created by his supporters. The police intervened and detained the protestors to manage the escalating situation.

Details of the Controversial Screening

‘Jana Nayagan’ was shown across three theatres in Virudhunagar on July 23, with a special fan show attended by Selvam Amirtharaj. During this event, a video allegedly produced by the MLA’s supporters was played, which included a recorded news clip that announced Vijayaprabakaran’s defeat in the previous Tamil Nadu Assembly election. This was in the Virudhunagar constituency, where Vijayaprabakaran is the son of the late DMDK founder, Vijayakanth.

The video also showcased Selvam Amirtharaj’s election campaign and his presence at public events post-victory. DMDK cadres expressed their outrage, accusing the creators of the video of intentionally belittling Vijayaprabakaran’s electoral loss.

In response to the video, more than 50 DMDK workers attempted to disrupt the screening by laying siege to the Amirtharaj Theatre located near the Old Bus Stand in Virudhunagar. Their actions were met with police intervention, leading to their detention.

Wider Celebrations for ‘Jana Nayagan’

Meanwhile, celebrations for the release of ‘Jana Nayagan’ took place across the state on July 23. Members of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and actor Vijay’s fans celebrated the film, which reportedly marked Vijay’s last cinematic project before fully entering politics. The movie was released in over 1,000 theatres, and jubilant scenes were reported in various districts, including Ramanathapuram.

In Ramanathapuram, TVK district secretary Malarvizhi Jayapala led a group of executives in greeting moviegoers and distributing sweets outside the theatre. The release was met with celebratory activities, including dancing, music, and confetti, turning multiple cinema halls into festive venues across districts like Nilgiris and Ranipet.

Additionally, fans of Vijay in cities such as Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru marked the occasion with large cut-outs of the actor and cake cutting, further enhancing the excitement surrounding the film.

Filmmaking Journey and Challenges

‘Jana Nayagan’ was initially scheduled for release on January 9, coinciding with Pongal, but faced delays due to issues with certification. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) withheld its certification due to concerns that certain scenes might offend religious sentiments, disappointing many fans who had eagerly anticipated its release.

Directed by H Vinoth, the film features a notable cast including Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Bobby Deol, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, Pooja Hegde and Narain. It also showcases music by Anirudh Ravichander, with cinematography led by Sathyan Sooryan, editing by Pradeep E Ragav, and production design by V Selvakumar.

The Aadi festival was marked by a horse cart race at the Ariyanachi Amman Temple located in K Veppankulam village, Rameswaram district, on July 24. This event drew large crowds from the localities, showcasing a vibrant display of tradition and community spirit.

Thousands of spectators lined the streets to witness the race, which featured seven participants in the small horse cart category and eight in the larger category. The competitive atmosphere saw carts from several districts, including Coimbatore, Trichy, and Dindigul, vying for victory.

Crowds were thrilled as horses and their drivers engaged in a spirited competition, with the top four finishers receiving cash prizes and souvenirs in recognition of their efforts. The event highlighted the communal joy and excitement surrounding this annual festival.

Significance of the Aadi Festival

The Aadi festival is a month-long celebration dedicated to Goddess Shakti, reflecting the community’s appreciation for Mother Nature and her contributions to agriculture and water availability. This festival is deeply rooted in local traditions, fostering a sense of unity among the participants and the audience alike.

Earlier in May, a separate ritual was performed in the same district, drawing attention to the rich cultural heritage of the region. The event included the enactment of Lord Shiva’s legendary fishing story, demonstrating the importance of such traditions in preserving local folklore.

Such celebrations serve not only as an avenue for entertainment but also as a reminder of the spiritual beliefs that form the foundation of the community. They provide an opportunity for the locals to engage with their cultural practices while celebrating their agricultural heritage.

Traditional Rituals Enacted at the Temple

On May 2, the ritual known as ‘Net-throwing Patalam Thiruvilayadal’ took place at the historic Arulmigu Pavalamulattulli Sametha Poovendiya Nath temple. This performance, linked to the Ramanathapuram Samasthana Devasthanam, has been conducted for centuries and draws significant participation from devotees.

The ritual illustrates a famous episode from the 64 Thiruvilayadal stories, as penned in the Periya Purana by Sekkizhar. It depicts the moment when Goddess Parvati, born to a fisherman leader, wishes to marry a brave individual who can confront a threatening shark. Lord Shiva assumes the guise of a fisherman to undertake this challenge.

Following the enactment of this fishing tale, the Thirukalyana Utsavam, a divine wedding ceremony, was held for Poovendiyanathar and Pavalavalli. This ceremony was widely attended by devotees from Ramanathapuram district and beyond, marking a significant end to the festivities connected to the Aadi celebration.

The ancient Vanchiyamman Temple in Vanchur village, near Katpadi in Vellore district, held special prayers on the second Friday of the Tamil month of Aadi. This ceremony, which took place on July 24, 2026, drew numerous devotees seeking the blessings of Goddess Vanchiyamman during this spiritually significant period.

As part of the rituals, the presiding deity was decorated with sandalwood paste, neem leaves, and flowers. These offerings are part of traditional worship practices upheld by the local community. Devotees participated in the special pujas, demonstrating their devotion and actively engaging in the ceremonial proceedings of the temple.

The locals adhered to the belief encapsulated in the phrase “Aadi Pirandhaal Vazhi Pirakkum,” which suggests that the arrival of Aadi month heralds new opportunities and positive beginnings. This time of year is particularly significant for communities that celebrate various forms of the Mother Goddess.

Ceremonial Activities and Devotee Participation

The rituals included Deeparadhana, an offering of lamps performed by the priests, while the congregation offered prayers to the deity. Many devotees queued up to take part in the darshan, symbolising their unwavering faith as they sought divine blessings during this auspicious time.

The spiritual atmosphere at the temple was palpable, as attendees partook in prayers that resonated with the traditions observed throughout centuries. The large turnout from Vanchur and surrounding villages highlighted the community’s commitment to their religious practices and the importance of the temple in their lives.

The Aadi month is recognised as one of the most spiritually significant periods in Tamil Nadu, particularly regarding the worship of Amman (Mother Goddess) deities. It typically occurs between mid-July and mid-August in the Gregorian calendar, marking a time for devotion and reflection.

Worship of Goddess Shakti in Aadi Month

Aadi month is traditionally dedicated to Goddess Shakti, symbolising divine feminine energy. Various forms of the goddess, including Mariamman, Kamakshi, and regional guardian deities, are worshipped extensively across Tamil Nadu during this time.

These forms of worship reflect the diverse cultural and spiritual landscape of the region. Dedicated festivals and rituals not only honour the deities but also strengthen community ties as people come together in shared beliefs and practices.

The observance of Aadi through rituals like those at Vanchiyamman Temple plays a critical role in the spiritual lives of many individuals. It represents a time when devotees can reconnect with their faith and community spirit through established customs that have persisted over generations.

Fishermen in Rameswaram have halted ongoing construction activities on the beach near the Agni Theerthakadal, claiming the project is using beach sand instead of authorised construction materials. This protest unfolded on July 24, 2026, as local fishermen voiced their grievances regarding the methods employed in the development of facilities intended for pilgrims.

Rameswaram, known for its religious significance comparable to Kashi, attracts devotees from across the nation who frequently visit Agni Theerthakadal. This site is especially popular on new moon days, when pilgrims come to partake in holy rituals and commemorative practices for their ancestors. The construction aims to enhance accessibility to the sea, enabling smoother participation in these sacred activities.

The development project is being executed by the Rameswaram Ramanathaswamy Temple Devasthanam, in collaboration with a private contractor, with funding received from the Central Government. Fishermen have reported that the construction should utilise river sand or manufactured sand (M-sand); however, it is alleged that beach sand is being used instead.

Impact on Local Fishing Activities

Local fishermen are concerned that the use of beach sand will disrupt their traditional fishing practices. They argue that the movement of seawater could be altered due to the construction, making it challenging for them to navigate their boats safely to shore. The dumping of large sacks of sand along the southern coastal area of Agni Theerthakadal, which is regularly used as shelter by small-scale fishermen, has intensified these concerns.

Members of the fishing community assembled at the construction site to oppose the activity, citing the potential negative impact on their livelihoods. They have underscored that the integrity of the structures built with beach sand may be compromised, raising issues surrounding durability and stability. Following the protest, construction workers ceased operations and left the site, leaving behind the sand that had already been delivered.

In remarks regarding the situation, G Siva, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Secretary for Rameswaram Taluk, acknowledged the project’s purpose of improving facilities for devotees. However, he cautioned that the choice of materials could significantly undermine the strength of the structures. He urged both the central and state governments to monitor the situation closely, advocating for legal action against any contractor who neglects proper building practices.

Call for Authority Intervention

The fishermen have formally requested that relevant authorities conduct a thorough inspection of the construction activities. They are demanding assurances that only approved materials are utilised for these enhancements. The community’s plea emphasises the importance of protecting their traditional fishing operations while also highlighting the need for responsible construction practices.

The situation in Rameswaram illustrates the delicate balance between development aimed at promoting tourism and the preservation of local livelihoods. As authorities reassess the construction materials being utilised, it remains to be seen how the concerns of the fishermen will influence future developments in the area.

This incident has underscored the necessity for dialogue between local communities and developers to ensure that projects not only serve religious and tourism purposes but also protect the interests of those whose lives depend on traditional industries such as fishing. The fishermen’s vigilance highlights the critical role that community engagement plays in planning and executing development projects in sensitive coastal regions.

A young man from Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu reportedly died following his arrest for allegedly selling liquor beyond the permitted hours. The victim, identified as Arunachalam, collapsed at a police station while in custody and was subsequently taken to a hospital where he died. His family has alleged that he was subjected to brutal treatment by police, which they claim led to his severe injuries.

According to family members, Arunachalam was assaulted by four police officers after his arrest. They expressed their belief that the injuries sustained during this time were critical enough to require urgent medical intervention. Following the incident at the police station, he was admitted to the hospital where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

However, law enforcement authorities have strongly denied the family’s claims. They stated that Arunachalam collapsed while conversing with others in the lock-up, a moment they assert was captured on surveillance cameras. Reports from officials indicate that he was in a medically stable condition at the time of his release on bail, prior to his medical examination with family members.

Contention Over Circumstances of Death

Police officials detailed that Arunachalam was taken for an examination to the Government Medical College Hospital in Thoothukudi shortly after his arrest and was declared fit for custody. They claimed there were no visible signs of injury at that time. The police contend that following his release, he experienced a further collapse near the hospital, leading to his admission for treatment.

Despite these claims, Arunachalam’s family has adamantly rejected the police narrative. They are insisting on a thorough investigation into his death, describing it as a case of custodial homicide. The family has refused to accept his body until their demands for transparency are met, particularly regarding access to CCTV footage from the police station that they allege is being withheld.

The incident has sparked a strong political backlash, particularly from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, which has accused the ruling government led by Chief Minister Vijay of failing to address custodial deaths adequately. DMK MP Kanimozhi expressed her distress regarding the situation, drawing attention to anguish faced by families due to alleged police brutality.

Previous Incidents Heighten Concerns Over Custodial Deaths

This incident follows closely on the heels of another reported custodial death in Nagercoil just weeks prior. In that case, a disabled man named Sabarivarman also died in judicial custody after he was reportedly assaulted by prison staff and inmates. A post-mortem examination discovered numerous injuries on his body, which prompted an investigation involving the arrest of multiple jail warders.

Historically, Tamil Nadu has faced scrutiny over incidents of custodial violence. One of the most prominent cases involves the deaths of P Jayaraj and J Bennix in 2020, which incited widespread outrage and led to legal action against officers involved. Public concern over the treatment within police custody has remained high in the state, with calls for accountability continuing to emerge.

The recent events have intensified discussions surrounding the need for reform in police practices within Tamil Nadu, highlighting the urgency for measures to prevent further occurrences of custodial death and violence. The situation remains fluid, with public attention focused on the outcome of ongoing investigations.

In Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu, residents from six villages have gathered in front of the Collector’s office to protest against the establishment of a proposed private Manamazhi Mandram liquor bar in the Pamban area. They have submitted a petition asserting that the opening of this liquor establishment could jeopardise the safety of women and children, potentially leading to increased law and order issues.

The villagers argue that the presence of a liquor bar would not only threaten their sense of security but would also adversely affect local livelihoods. They believe that the introduction of such an establishment in the Pamban Tharavaithopu region could disrupt the community’s peace and economic stability.

Rameswaram, located in this district, is renowned as a significant pilgrimage site, attracting numerous spiritual tourists. The area’s historical essence is a key factor that the locals feel must be preserved, further complicating the issue surrounding the proposed liquor bar.

Historical Significance of the Pamban Area

Pamban is home to several sites of historical importance, including the Kunthukal Vivekananda Mani Mandapam. The historical status of the area has led to opposition against the liquor shop among the residents who fear that it would detract from the region’s spiritual ambience.

Legal precedents have been established in the past to safeguard the cultural integrity of the area, including a court ruling prohibiting the establishment of liquor shops aimed at protecting the interests of spiritual visitors. The residents are urging the authorities to uphold these rulings in light of the recent developments.

The collective voice of the community reflects a deep apprehension regarding the socio-cultural changes that might result from the establishment of a liquor bar. Residents from villages such as Tharavaithopu, Akkala Math, Kunthukal, Muhammediyarpuram, Child Jesus Nagar, and Ayyan Thoppu have united in this cause, indicating widespread concern across the region.

Government Response to Community Grievances

In response to the protests, District Collector Sivaguru Prabhakaran has acknowledged the petition submitted by the villagers. He stated that the matter would be carefully considered and appropriate action would be taken to address the community’s concerns.

The public demand highlights the importance of carefully evaluating developments that could compromise the safety and integrity of local communities, particularly in areas known for their spiritual significance.

As discussions surrounding the establishment of the bar continue, the residents remain vigilant, advocating for their rights and the preservation of their communal environment. The outcome of this situation could have lasting implications for the region and its residents, who are determined to maintain their way of life.

A damaged mechanised fishing boat has become stranded on a sandbar in the entrance channel to the Thoothukudi Fishing Harbour, effectively halting fishing activities for local fishermen. The boat belongs to fishermen from Tharuvaikulam and reportedly suffered a technical malfunction while out at sea. Efforts to return the vessel to shore were unsuccessful, leading to its current predicament on the sandbar.

As a result of this incident, mechanised boat fishermen in the Thoothukudi area did not go out to sea for fishing on Monday. The situation has raised concerns about the economic impact on those reliant on fishing as a primary source of income.

Salt Production Workers Demand Better Welfare Support

Simultaneously, the salt production industry in Thoothukudi district is facing its own challenges. Workers, who have been actively producing salt ahead of the monsoon season, are demanding improved government welfare measures to support them during the periods of unemployment that typically follow the monsoon. Salt production is a seasonal activity, with operations typically commencing in February and concluding in October.

As the monsoon approaches, these workers express growing concern about their financial situation, as production will come to a standstill for several months. Many workers, like Sekar, have voiced their worries about not having a source of income during this time and have called for enhanced financial assistance from the government.

Currently, the government provides a relief payment of ₹5,000 to assist workers during the monsoon months. However, workers indicate that this amount is often insufficient to meet their family’s basic needs. Sekar pointed out the significance of government support for sustaining livelihoods during these challenging months.

Concerns Over Land Ownership and Rights

The salt pan workers have also raised issues regarding land ownership. While they possess documentation that proves ownership of the salt pans, they do not hold formal land titles or rights (patta), which complicates their claims for assistance. They are asking the government to take these concerns seriously and provide the necessary welfare benefits and resources to help them maintain their families during the off-season.

These discussions underscore the larger issue affecting many in the salt production sector, who face unemployment each year due to seasonal fluctuations. The workers stress the need for comprehensive support mechanisms that would ensure their families do not face hardship once the monsoon sets in.

In light of these combined challenges, local fishermen and salt production workers hope to engage with authorities to seek a sustainable solution that addresses both immediate needs and long-term welfare support for their families.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) intends to raise the Mekedatu Dam matter in Parliament during the upcoming Monsoon Session commencing on July 21. This strategic move comes as the party faces political challenges in Tamil Nadu, particularly with the emergence of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Chief Minister Vijay.

Trichy Siva, a DMK Rajya Sabha member, stated on Saturday that the party would bring the issue to the attention of both Houses. He accused the Karnataka government of not adhering to existing directives concerning the release of Cauvery water and indicated that the DMK would press the Centre to establish a new tribunal to resolve the Mekedatu dispute.

Additionally, Siva mentioned that the party has already submitted adjournment motion notices in both Houses to demand a discussion on this crucial topic. The proposed Mekedatu Dam project is situated on the Cauvery River near its confluence with the Arkavathi River in the Kanakapura region of Ramanagara district.

Karnataka’s Position on the Dam Project

The Karnataka government has expressed that the Mekedatu project aims to address Bengaluru’s drinking water needs while also generating 400 megawatts of hydroelectric power. However, the DMK and the Tamil Nadu government have voiced strong opposition, contending that the project would disrupt the downstream flow of Cauvery water, adversely affecting farmers who rely on the river for irrigation.

In a unanimous resolution passed last month, the Tamil Nadu Assembly urged the Centre not to approve the project. The resolution characterised Karnataka’s initiative regarding the Rs 9,000-crore project as unilateral, alleging that it contravened the verdict of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and subsequent Supreme Court rulings.

The dispute over the Mekedatu Dam continues to be a point of tension between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The DMK’s insistence on raising the issue in Parliament reflects its commitment to advocating for the interests of Tamil Nadu farmers and residents who may be affected by the project.

DMK’s Position on Proposed Delimitation Bill

In addition to the Mekedatu issue, Siva addressed the proposed Delimitation Bill, refuting claims that the DMK had changed its stance on the matter. He noted that the party is currently awaiting further clarification from the Centre regarding the proposal. This comes amidst speculation that the DMK may be reconsidering its position after earlier statements indicated the lack of a formal stance.

Congress MP P Chidambaram has alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is attempting to secure support from the DMK for the Delimitation Bill. Siva reiterated that the DMK would oppose any delimitation exercise that could diminish the parliamentary representation of southern states.

The party has expressed firm opposition to the bill in its present form if it threatens the representation of southern states. According to Siva, these states are already under-represented in the Indian Parliament, and any further reductions would undermine their political influence and voice.

The Centre is anticipated to introduce the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill during the Monsoon Session, which proposes an increase in Lok Sabha seats to 850 and establishes a foundation for a future delimitation exercise.
