Impact of Recent Quake in Tibet

The earlier earthquake, which struck Baqen County in the Tibet Autonomous Region at 10.33 pm local time on Thursday, resulted in the loss of 16 lives and left 76 individuals injured. Following this incident, the affected areas have experienced a total of 834 aftershocks, including eight that ranged in magnitude from 4.0 to 4.9. All injured individuals are reportedly receiving medical care, with five of the eleven initially classified as seriously injured now reported to be in a mild condition, according to Xinhua news agency.

In response to the disaster, extensive rescue, relief, and resettlement operations are underway in Tibet. Authorities have evacuated 12,489 residents from the impacted areas. The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation announced that satellites and drones have been deployed to facilitate emergency communications and capture images of the affected regions.

Relief efforts are being bolstered by the arrival of supplies and personnel. Over 52,450 items of disaster relief supplies have been dispatched to the earthquake zone, which includes tents, prefabricated houses, folding beds, and cold-weather necessities. More than 2,500 rescue personnel are actively involved in these operations, with 35 temporary resettlement sites established to accommodate displaced residents.

Ongoing Relief Operations

Authorities have mobilised significant resources for the ongoing relief efforts in Tibet. More than 1,600 personnel from Baqen County, alongside 347 firefighters from the Nagqu fire and rescue detachment and 530 police officers from the Nagqu public security bureau, have been deployed. These teams are equipped with vehicles and search-and-rescue dogs to assist in the operations.

Medical treatment and public health services are being provided systematically to ensure the well-being of the affected population. Measures to prevent disease outbreaks are also being implemented, as the rescue headquarters continues to oversee the situation. The comprehensive response highlights the commitment of local authorities to address the immediate needs of those impacted by the recent natural disasters.

While the situation in Qinghai remains stable following Saturday’s earthquake, the focus continues to be on the recovery efforts in Tibet. Authorities are closely monitoring the aftermath of both earthquakes to ensure that all necessary support is provided to the affected communities.
