पाकिस्तान के कराची पोर्ट पर एक जहाज पिछले सात महीने से खड़ा है, जिसमें छह भारतीय नागरिक फंसे हुए हैं। ये लोग अपने वतन लौटने की उम्मीद में दिन गिन रहे हैं। जहाज पर बिजली की कमी और मोबाइल नेटवर्क की अनुपलब्धता ने उनकी मुश्किलें और बढ़ा दी हैं। परिवार से बात करने का मौका भी उन्हें हर 15 दिन में एक बार ही मिल पाता है। ऐसे में सवाल उठता है कि आखिर इन भारतीयों की वतन वापसी कब होगी?

परिवारों की गुहार, सरकार से मदद की अपील

इन छह भारतीयों में एक नाम प्रयागराज के विनीत किशोर मिश्रा का है। विनीत जहाज पर चीफ ऑफिसर के पद पर तैनात थे। पिछले 10 साल से मर्चेंट नेवी में काम कर रहे विनीत के परिवार ने कभी नहीं सोचा था कि उनका बेटा और पति खुद एक ऐसे इंतजार में फंस जाएगा, जिसका कोई अंत नजर नहीं आ रहा। विनीत की पत्नी नेहा और उनके पिता ललित किशोर मिश्रा, जो रिटायर्ड आर्मी पर्सन हैं, लगातार अपने बेटे की सुरक्षित वतन वापसी की कोशिश कर रहे हैं।

ईरानी कंपनी का विवाद और जहाज की स्थिति

विनीत के दो छोटे बच्चे भी हैं, जो अपने पिता के घर लौटने का इंतजार कर रहे हैं। परिवार का कहना है कि विनीत ने इसी साल 25 फरवरी को ईरान की KEVER शिपिंग कंपनी जॉइन की थी। कंपनी के एक जहाज को लेकर वह ओमान से रवाना हुए और 17 अप्रैल 2026 को जहाज पाकिस्तान के कराची पोर्ट पहुंचा। परिवार का आरोप है कि कराची पहुंचते ही जहाज को रोक लिया गया।

कॉन्ट्रैक्ट खत्म, फिर भी जहाज पर फंसे

परिवार के मुताबिक, विनीत का कंपनी के साथ कॉन्ट्रैक्ट खत्म हो चुका है, लेकिन उन्हें जहाज से साइन ऑफ यानी औपचारिक रूप से ड्यूटी से मुक्त करके वापस लौटने की अनुमति नहीं मिली है। इस स्थिति ने परिवार को और भी चिंतित कर दिया है। विनीत की पत्नी और परिवार ने भारतीय दूतावास से संपर्क किया है।

दूतावास से मिली कोई राहत नहीं

परिवार ने भारतीय दूतावास को पत्र लिखकर विनीत और बाकी भारतीयों की सुरक्षित वापसी की मांग की है। परिवार का कहना है कि दूतावास से आश्वासन मिला, लेकिन सात महीने बीत जाने के बावजूद समस्या का समाधान नहीं हुआ। अब परिवार दिल्ली पहुंचकर प्रधानमंत्री, राष्ट्रपति और विदेश मंत्रालय से मदद मांग रहा है।

स्थानीय नेताओं से भी मदद की कोशिश

स्थानीय विधायक और सांसद के माध्यम से भी इस मामले को विदेश मंत्रालय तक पहुंचाने की कोशिश की जा रही है। परिवार के सवाल हैं कि अगर विवाद किसी कंपनी और पोर्ट अधिकारियों के बीच है, तो भारतीय नागरिकों को उसके बीच फंसाकर क्यों रखा गया है? उनके दस्तावेज कब लौटाए जाएंगे और उन्हें अपने देश आने की अनुमति आखिर कब मिलेगी?

सरकार से उम्मीदें

Households are reportedly struggling to secure affordable cooking fuel, leading some to resort to alternative sources such as wood and coal. The situation has raised concerns about the broader implications of Pakistan’s declining domestic natural gas production and increasing reliance on costly imports.

As of October 21, 2026, reports indicated that LPG prices had reached PKR 600 per kilogram in hilly areas, while the official rate for October was pegged at around PKR 279 per kilogram. The notified price for an 11.8 kg domestic cylinder was set at PKR 3,296.23, highlighting the growing disparity between regulated prices and market realities.

Declining Domestic Production and Circular Debt

The Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) has revealed a troubling trend in domestic gas production, which has fallen from 3,597 million cubic feet per day in the financial year 2020 to 2,890 million cubic feet per day by FY2025. This represents a nearly 20 per cent decline over five years, attributed to the depletion of mature fields and a lack of new discoveries to offset the losses.

According to the Pakistan Economic Survey 2024-25, average gas consumption during July-March FY2025 was recorded at 3,143 million cubic feet per day, with a significant portion supplied through imported regasified LNG. The reliance on imports has raised concerns about the financial health of the gas sector, with circular debt reportedly reaching PKR 5.454 trillion by June 30, 2026. This debt includes PKR 3.631 trillion attributed to circular debt and PKR 1.823 trillion in outstanding payments to suppliers.

Challenges in the gas sector have been compounded by tariff gaps and delayed payments, which hinder the ability of gas utilities to meet their obligations. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has expressed concerns over the rising circular debt and has urged the government to implement targeted gas subsidies while addressing the underlying financial issues.

Complexities of the Gas Supply Chain

The gas crisis in Pakistan is further complicated by the interplay between different types of gas: natural gas, LNG, and LPG. Natural gas is extracted and delivered through pipelines, while LNG is transported in liquid form and converted back to gas at terminals. LPG, primarily used in households without piped connections, is stored in cylinders. Disruptions in one supply chain can significantly impact the others, leading to increased competition for household energy budgets.

As households face limited piped gas supply and soaring LPG prices, many are compelled to turn to wood and coal for cooking. Reports indicate that residents in Rawalpindi and Islamabad are receiving natural gas for only about six hours a day, intensifying the reliance on alternative fuels.

Pakistan’s government has attempted to balance financial reform with consumer relief, but maintaining tariffs at current levels does not address the gap between production costs and consumer prices. The government is exploring options to replace broad gas subsidies with targeted assistance for low-income households, although challenges remain in implementing these reforms.

He described the emerging ‘5D Security Threat’—comprising Disinformation, Destabilisation, Disruption, Deception, and Destruction—as a complex challenge for security agencies.

Singh remarked that terrorism is evolving beyond traditional organised groups, with new threats such as ‘lone-wolf’ attacks and ‘white-collar terrorism’ complicating identification and prevention efforts. He cited a recent incident involving a co-pilot who allegedly attempted to crash a passenger aircraft, showcasing the potential dangers posed by individual attackers.

He commended Captain Smit Machhar for his bravery in averting what could have been a major terror incident, illustrating how individual acts of courage can thwart larger plots. Singh stressed that combating terrorism requires not only the resources of security agencies but also the active involvement of vigilant citizens.

Defence Sector Growth and Preparedness

Singh addressed the advancements in India’s defence sector, noting that defence production has surged to over ₹1.78 lakh crore from ₹40,000 crore in 2014. He reported that defence exports have reached an all-time high of ₹39,000 crore, a significant increase from ₹686 crore in 2013-14, with Indian defence products now reaching nearly 100 countries.

The Defence Minister expressed confidence that the nation would meet its defence production target of ₹2 lakh crore this year and aim for ₹3 lakh crore by 2029, alongside plans to export defence equipment worth ₹50,000 crore by that same year. He attributed this growth to reforms that simplified export procedures and enhanced India’s global standing in the defence market.

Singh highlighted that the Ministry of Defence has approved procurement worth over ₹2,400 crore from start-ups and MSMEs, along with projects exceeding ₹1,500 crore for new technology development. He noted that the iDEX initiative has engaged 676 start-ups, facilitating the signing of 551 contracts, showcasing the burgeoning defence start-up ecosystem.

He also pointed out that 159 of the 175 ammunition variants used by the Defence Forces are now produced domestically, achieving over 90 per cent self-reliance in this area. Singh concluded by mentioning India’s status as the fourth country globally to establish a national standard for bulletproof jackets, aligning with international norms, along with significant measures like the One Rank One Pension scheme and the establishment of the Chief of Defence Staff position.
