The plea noted that nearly ninety witnesses still require examination, arguing against the validity of delaying trial as a rationale for granting bail.

Sonam, originally from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, was apprehended in June 2025 after her husband, a businessman, was found dead. The couple had disappeared while vacationing in Sohra on May 23, 2025, and Raja’s body was discovered from a gorge on June 2, 2025. The police have asserted that Sonam colluded with hired individuals to orchestrate her husband’s murder for financial reasons.

The Meghalaya High Court upheld a previous order from a trial court that had granted bail to Sonam on April 27, 2026. Both judicial bodies acknowledged the procedural faults identified by the investigating agency and expressed discontent with the state police’s handling of the case. In an order issued by Deputy Commissioner Kum. Anendya Raajsshre, all government employees have been instructed not to post or forward messages, audio or video clips, pictures, or any content that may be provocative or inflammatory in nature.

The advisory also warns employees against posting or commenting on law-and-order incidents occurring in other districts or states in a manner that could influence public sentiment or trigger reactions among sections of society.

Strict compliance ordered

The directive applies to all government offices in South West Garo Hills. Heads of Offices have been instructed to ensure that the order is strictly followed by their staff.

Officials said any violation of the advisory will attract legal action under relevant laws, in addition to disciplinary proceedings under the Meghalaya Civil Services (Discipline & Appeal) Rules, 2019.

The advisory comes amid heightened tensions in parts of the Garo Hills region following violent incidents during the nomination process for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections.

Curfew extended in West Garo Hills

Meanwhile, authorities in West Garo Hills district have extended the curfew for another 48 hours due to the prevailing law-and-order situation.

In an order issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, District Magistrate Vibhor Agarwal said the curfew will remain in force from 12:00 a.m. on March 11, 2026, until 12:00 a.m. on March 13, 2026, unless withdrawn earlier.

Authorities said the restrictions have been imposed to maintain public order and prevent further escalation of tensions in the region.

The unrest was ignited on Monday when former Phulbari legislator Estamur Momin was reportedly attacked by protesters while attempting to file his nomination for the GHADC elections slated for April 10. In the wake of the violence, authorities suspended mobile internet services in West Garo Hills for a period of 48 hours commencing March 10, aiming to curtail the spread of misinformation via social media. However, traditional voice and SMS services continue to function normally. Security measures have also been bolstered at nomination centres as the deadline for filing nomination papers approaches on March 16, with scrutiny scheduled for March 17.

Political Complaints Filed

Amid the ongoing tension, Mukul Sangma, the Leader of the Opposition in the Meghalaya Assembly, lodged a police complaint against Momin. The complaint alleges that Momin made inflammatory remarks following the incident, potentially inciting further unrest.

Sangma characterized the speech as “vitriolic election rhetoric,” arguing that such statements could aggravate the already sensitive situation regarding the participation of non-tribals in the elections. He also refuted claims suggesting he had endorsed such involvement.

Judicial Oversight

Separately, the Meghalaya High Court has acknowledged the state government’s commitment to deploy additional security forces to confirm the safe filing of nominations amid the unrest. Sangma stated that the towers will function as a state-of-the-art tourist attraction, featuring elevators, restaurants and a circular glass skywalk at the summit, offering panoramic views of the surrounding hills. Drawing comparisons with global landmarks such as the Burj Khalifa, he said the project will incorporate advanced lighting systems and laser shows narrating Meghalaya’s history, culture and traditions each evening. The initiative will also use immersive storytelling technologies to enhance visitor engagement.

Integrated Cultural and Ecological Hub

The Monolith Tower Complex, conceptualised by INI Design Studio, will span approximately 213.8 acres and is envisioned as an integrated tourism, cultural and ecological hub.

Inspired by traditional Khasi and Jaintia monoliths (Mawbynna), the development aims to reflect the region’s ancestral heritage. Officials said the complex will house five experiential galleries themed around rain, caves, living root bridges, tribal life, and Meghalaya’s diverse flora and fauna. A 72-metre sky bridge linking the towers, elevated dining spaces and comprehensive visitor amenities are also part of the plan.

Sangma explained that the Monolith Towers are part of a broader strategy to decongest Shillong by developing new tourism zones across the state.

Major Projects Across the State

In addition to the Monolith Towers, several major initiatives are in the pipeline. These include a Rs 51-crore skywalk and tourist hub at Mawkdok, described as India’s longest cantilever structure; a Rs 30-crore Tribal Heritage Experience Centre at Mandalgre; an eco-resort at Sakaladuma; and a Rain and Bamboo Museum at Mawsynram.

Under the PM-DevINE initiative, Meghalaya has secured Rs 233 crore for tourism development in Sohra. The project will feature an experiential centre with an amphitheatre and supporting infrastructure to enhance visitor participation.

Focus on Community and Cultural Growth

Highlighting tourism’s multiplier effect, the Chief Minister said the government is pursuing a balanced approach that combines large-scale infrastructure with community-driven ventures. Nearly 1,000 new homestays have already been established across the state, with a target of adding 3,000 more in the coming years.

Sangma also emphasised efforts to promote grassroots music and local talent. He noted that local artistes are being provided regular performance platforms and financial support through state-backed events, with some bands now performing at venues such as Hard Rock Cafe outlets across India.

Reaffirming the government’s long-term objective, Sangma said the aim is to build a sustainable tourism ecosystem that safeguards Meghalaya’s cultural heritage while ensuring widespread employment opportunities and economic growth across the state.

The complainant, associated with NAFORD, an organization representing doctors from Nagaland, filed a formal complaint with the authorities. The organization has also reached out to the Chief Minister, urging immediate and severe consequences for the accused. Police officials stated that a case was launched under several relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code in response to the doctor’s complaint.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (City) Abhinav Tyagi, the AIIMS police department received a report on the evening of February 22 detailing the harassment incident involving the young female doctor.

The India–Bangladesh border in Meghalaya stretches for nearly 440 km, of which around 40 km remains unfenced. According to the Chief Minister, the largest unfenced stretch lies in the West Jaintia Hills sector. He said the delay in completing the project was due to multiple challenges, including population-related concerns, land acquisition issues and ongoing court cases.

Sangma acknowledged that legal disputes in certain areas have slowed down the work but assured that the state government is taking necessary steps to resolve these issues. “We are working closely with all stakeholders to ensure that the remaining fencing work is completed at the earliest,” he said.

Border security key priority

Emphasising that border security remains a top priority, the Chief Minister said the Meghalaya government is maintaining heightened vigilance along the international boundary in coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF) and other central agencies. He added that regular monitoring and coordination mechanisms are in place to prevent illegal activities and ensure overall security.

Sangma also referred to a high-level review meeting held on December 24, 2025, which was attended by officials from various agencies, including the BSF and the Intelligence Bureau. The meeting reviewed the overall border situation and focused on strengthening coordination among agencies to address security concerns more effectively.

Officials said the Centre is closely tracking the progress of the fencing work and providing necessary support to ensure timely completion, given the strategic importance of the Meghalaya–Bangladesh border.
