India’s men’s chess team experienced its first loss at the Chess Olympiad, falling 1.5-2.5 to the host country, Uzbekistan. This match was part of the sixth round and marked a significant shift as the defending champions relinquished their sole lead in the open section. Uzbekistan, regarded as one of the stronger teams in the competition, showcased their calibre, creating a highly competitive atmosphere.

The encounter saw tough battles across the boards. On the top board, R Praggnanandhaa managed to secure a draw against Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Similarly, Arjun Erigaisi also drew his match against Javokhir Sindarov. D Gukesh maintained the balance for India by achieving a draw with Shamsiddin Vokhidov in his match on the fourth board.

However, the match’s outcome pivoted on the third board, where India’s Nihal Sarin was defeated by Nodirbek Yakubboev. Sarin, who had delivered commendable performances throughout the tournament, encountered challenges in this particular round and struggled to match the skill exhibited by Yakubboev.

Key Match Details

During the match between Sarin and Yakubboev, the Uzbekistan player capitalised on several unforced errors made by Sarin. This strategic advantage allowed Yakubboev to transition into a queen-versus-two-pieces endgame, from which he maintained decisive control.

Sarin, unable to regain his footing in the game, ultimately succumbed to defeat, sealing India’s fate in this round. With three drawn games and one loss, the final score of 1.5-2.5 reflected a crucial setback for the Indian men’s team. This defeat not only impacted their performance but also resulted in their loss of the top position in the standings, handing Uzbekistan a vital lead.

Following this round, India’s score remained at 10 points, while Uzbekistan surged ahead to secure 12 points. The situation was further complicated for India as Germany, another team in contention, also lost to China. This sequence of events significantly bolstered Uzbekistan’s position at the front of the open section.

Women’s Team Performance Summary

Meanwhile, positive performance by the Indian women’s team provided a silver lining on a challenging day for the overall delegation. While the men faced defeat, the women’s continued success highlighted their potential in the tournament, aiming to secure their standing as they progress.

For the men’s team, the defeat against Uzbekistan leaves them with a challenging path ahead in the forthcoming rounds. Their initial strong start at the Olympiad has now been dampened, with a need to quickly adapt and recover to remain in the competitive hunt. The narrow margins of the tournament standings underscore the significance of each match outcome in this prestigious event.

World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen made a memorable gesture at the Global Chess League on Friday, September 11, handing his Player of the Match award to Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi after Alpine APL Pipers defeated FYERS American Gambits 9-7.

Although Carlsen received the award after beating Javokhir Sindarov on the icon board, the Norwegian said Vidit’s victory over Daniil Dubov in a marathon endgame had secured the match for the defending champions and deserved recognition.

Carlsen Passes Award To Vidit

Carlsen took the microphone shortly after receiving the Player of the Match award and said he was pleased with both his performance and the team’s victory but did not believe he deserved the individual honour over Vidit.

“To win, I will say though, that as much as I’m happy with the game and happy with the win, uh, I do not deserve this player of the match as much as the the man who who won us the match, so I would like to. Respectfully pass on the trophy to Vidit,” Carlsen said.

The gesture came after the Alpine APL Pipers’ victory over FYERS American Gambits in the penultimate round of the tournament.

Vidit later described the moment as special and expressed his appreciation for Carlsen’s recognition.

“This one is special. Getting appreciation from the G.O.A.T himself! Thanks Magnus,” Vidit said in a post on X.

Carlsen Ends Sindarov’s Winning Run

The ninth-round contest was crucial for both teams, who had started the round level on match points as well as game points in the race for a place in the final.

Carlsen brought an end to Candidates 2026 champion Javokhir Sindarov’s three-match winning streak with a commanding performance on the icon board.

The Norwegian maintained control of the game against the Uzbek player throughout the contest, with Sindarov eventually resigning after 36 moves.

Carlsen’s victory was initially rewarded with the Player of the Match award, which he later chose to hand over to Vidit.

Vidit Holds Nerve In 96-Move Marathon

The decisive moment of the match came on the Superstar men’s board, where Vidit faced Daniil Dubov in a tense encounter.

The game developed into a prolonged endgame and both players came under severe time pressure.

Vidit held his nerve through the 96-move contest, using his extra knight and pawn against Dubov’s rook to eventually secure a crucial victory.

His win helped Alpine APL Pipers defeat FYERS American Gambits 9-7 and strengthened the defending champions’ push for a place in the title clash.

Pipers Complete Double Over American Gambits

The victory also saw Alpine APL Pipers complete a double over FYERS American Gambits in the Global Chess League.

With the penultimate round concluded, the defending champions strengthened their position in the race for the final.

For Carlsen, however, the result was followed by a moment that drew attention away from his own victory, as the World No. 1 publicly credited Vidit’s performance as the one that had won the match for the Pipers.

Magnus Carlsen has stated his firm intention to maintain his involvement in chess, despite acknowledging that his time at the sport’s pinnacle is limited. The five-time world champion, who is often regarded as the modern chess great, is encouraging the chess community to start considering its future without him.

Carlsen expressed his awareness of the evolving dynamics within the chess world and welcomed the introduction of new formats. He emphasised the importance of the sport adapting independently of his personal preferences. “Look, I think there are a lot of positives in the chess world these days,” he remarked, underlining the increasing interest from new fans globally.

The chess prodigy highlighted the need for innovative formats to market the game effectively. “Over the last five to six years, many new chess fans have emerged, and we are still trying to find the right ways to present the game,” he added, reflecting on the changing landscape of chess.

Shift to Rapid Chess and Upcoming Competitions

At 35 years old, Carlsen has largely departed from the classical World Championship cycle and has focused more on rapid chess, alongside selected prestigious events. His upcoming participation in Season 4 of the Global Chess League (GCL) particularly excites him, as he has a preference for the faster format of play. This innovative environment allows him to challenge himself while adapting to his evolving competitive interests.

Despite variations in his enthusiasm for tournaments, Carlsen clarified that the future of chess should not be dictated by his personal motivations. “I’m motivated for tournaments—sometimes more than other times, which is evident in my approach,” he stated. He reiterated the need for organisers to not tailor the game’s evolution based solely on his circumstances or interests, especially given the narrowing timeframe of his elite career.

Carlsen remains eager to compete, especially in the GCL, where he can engage in a competitive format that has become increasingly significant in his career. “For now, I like to play and I’m looking forward to competing here,” he mentioned, referencing the time format associated with his recent successes.

Structure and Format of the Global Chess League

The forthcoming season of the Global Chess League will feature six franchises competing in a double round-robin league. The top-performing teams will advance to the knockout stage, vying for the championship title. Each franchise will field six players, covering six boards simultaneously, and will include a mix of talent: one icon, two superstar men, two superstar women, and one prodigy player.

Matches will be conducted under rapid time conditions, with each player receiving a time allocation of 20 minutes. An increment of two seconds will begin after the 41st move, enhancing the excitement and pace of the games. The league has introduced a distinctive scoring system, where victories with the black pieces reward four points, while wins with the white pieces offer three. Drawing a match results in both players receiving one point, ensuring all results carry weight.

The anticipated structure and innovative format of the league signify an exciting period for chess, where both new and experienced players can showcase their skills in a more dynamic environment.

Vandan Alankar Sawai, a 15-year-old chess player from Delhi, stunned world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen with a victory in an online blitz tournament, but the teenager’s reaction to one of the biggest wins of his career was remarkably understated. He did not immediately tell either his parents or his coach that he had beaten the five-time world champion.

According to the Times of India, Vandan, a Candidate Master with a FIDE classical rating of 2,288, defeated Carlsen, rated 2,823, in 50 moves during Chess.com’s Titled Tuesday event on August 18. The significant rating difference did not intimidate the teenager, who said he approached the game without feeling pressured.

“I didn’t have anything to lose and everything to gain. I decided to play a comfortable game and opened with my usual pawn move e4 while playing with white pieces,” Vandan said.

Teenager Kept His Carlsen Win Quiet

Vandan’s parents only discovered what had happened later, when his father, former banker Alankar Sawai, came across the game while browsing Chess.com. His mother, Dr Madhuri Alankar Sawai, said her son had initially been unwilling to take part in the tournament.

“My husband and I were at home when Vandan came and said he had played the tournament. When my husband asked, only then did Vandan say he had played against Carlsen and won. Vandan was reluctant to participate in the event. We forced him to play,” she said.

His coach, Gurpreet Pal Singh, was similarly unaware of the result until the following day. After his game against Carlsen, Vandan continued playing, winning two more rounds before finishing his four-game tournament with three victories and one defeat.

The teenager eventually stopped playing for the night because he was tired, rather than celebrating his victory over one of the world’s greatest chess players.

How Vandan Beat Magnus Carlsen

Vandan was paired against Carlsen in the second round and stuck to his usual playing style instead of allowing the Norwegian’s reputation to influence his approach. Carlsen responded to Vandan’s 1.e4 with e5, leading to a Giuoco Piano opening.

The game was played under a five-minute time control. Vandan managed his clock effectively and gradually built pressure before a critical mistake by Carlsen changed the course of the game.

Carlsen’s king came under pressure from Vandan’s bishop, and the Norwegian’s response allowed the Delhi player to win material. The teenager admitted that the error caught him off guard.

“I was shocked when he blundered,” Vandan said.

Vandan subsequently handled the simplified position confidently and maintained control until Carlsen resigned on the 50th move.

Singh, who has coached Vandan for around seven years, said the teenager’s reserved personality contrasts with his aggressive approach over the chessboard.

“I came to know about the game from Vandan’s father the next day. The boy is a bit reserved and will answer in a precise manner,” Singh said.

“Like all other young kids, he too is an aggressive player. He is a person of few words. He is not shy, but reserved.”

From Family Chess Games To Candidate Master

Vandan’s introduction to chess came through his family. His mother had played the game with her brother when she was younger and later introduced her son to it.

“In my younger days, I played chess with my brother. So, I taught Vandan the game. He picked it up fast and started solving puzzles like mate in onetwo moves,” Dr Madhuri said.

His family eventually brought him under Singh’s guidance, giving his natural interest in the game a more structured direction.

Away from chess, Vandan is also a strong student and has a particular interest in reading about wars. He has little interest in fiction or films, and he remains uncertain about whether chess will become his full-time career.

For now, becoming an International Master is among his goals. “I am not sure whether chess will be my full-time profession in the future as at this age players have become GMs. Perhaps I will look at history and somewhat towards political science,” Vandan said.

While defeating Carlsen would be a defining achievement for many young players, Vandan’s response has been notably low-key. After beating the world No. 1, the teenager simply continued his tournament and moved on to his next game.

R Praggnanandhaa has marked a significant milestone in his chess career by winning the Norway Chess 2026 tournament. This achievement positions him as the first Indian to secure the title since the event commenced in 2013. After clinching the championship, Praggnanandhaa lauded the strength of the competition, noting the presence of world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen among the elite players as a key factor in making his triumph especially memorable.

The level of competition at Norway Chess was formidable, with all competitors in the Open section boasting ratings above 2700. Praggnanandhaa himself highlighted the distinguished quality of the event, stating that unlike other tournaments, which often feature a mix of players with varying ratings, Norway Chess consisted solely of top-tier talent.

Reflecting on this victory, Praggnanandhaa remarked, “I think this is like the biggest win of my career. It was also stronger in terms of average rating.” His journey to the title included defeating Carlsen twice, an extraordinary feat against one of the legends of chess. This triumph adds to his accomplishments and solidifies his place in the chess world.

Resilience Fuels Late Surge to Victory

Praggnanandhaa’s path to winning the tournament was characterised by resilience. After encountering challenges at the start, he rallied to secure four straight victories, accumulating a total of 18 points. His impressive comeback demonstrates not only his skill but also his determination under pressure.

His significant victories included two wins over the seven-time champion Carlsen, further elevating the profile of his achievement. “Winning this is more special with Magnus being there, and winning four games in a row certainly comes right at the top,” he declared, acknowledging the impact of his late tournament resurgence.

The title was solidified after Wesley So did not secure a classical win against Alireza Firouzja in the final round. This match result enabled Praggnanandhaa to maintain control over his position against Vincent Keymer, ensuring that he finished on top of the leaderboard.

Celebrations and Growing Popularity

The success of Praggnanandhaa extended beyond the tournament itself, as he experienced a heartfelt reception from fans in Oslo. Following his impressive performance, supporters gathered to congratulate the young Grandmaster, creating a celebratory atmosphere that reflected the significance of his achievement.

Despite the rigours of the tournament, Praggnanandhaa engaged with the crowd, smiling for photographs and signing autographs. His graciousness in interacting with fans highlighted his rising popularity in the chess community and marked a fitting conclusion to what has been a historic week for the emerging star.

This triumph at Norway Chess is expected to enhance Praggnanandhaa’s stature as one of the brightest talents in the chess arena. With the World Rapid Team Championship in Hong Kong scheduled for later this month, he plans to take a short break before resuming competitive play, buoyed by the confidence gained from what he described as the most special title of his career.

Along the way, he defeated Carlsen twice and registered a crucial classical victory over Gukesh, becoming the first Indian to lift one of chess’s most coveted trophies.

Entering the final round in contention for the title, Praggnanandhaa held fellow Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi to a draw before prevailing in the Armageddon tiebreak. The result, combined with outcomes elsewhere, secured his place at the top of the standings and completed a landmark triumph for Indian chess.

Mr. Gautam Adani, Chairman, Adani Group, congratulated Praggnanandhaa on becoming the first Indian to win Norway Chess, describing the achievement as “one of the ultimate tests of endurance, intellect and temperament in the world of chess”. Mr. Adani, who recognised Praggnanandhaa’s exceptional promise early in his journey and backed him through the Adani Sportsline’s “Garv Hai” initiative, noted that defeating the world’s best players on one of the sport’s grandest stages was a remarkable feat and praised the young Grandmaster’s fearless, focused and deeply Indian spirit.
Mr Pranav Adani, Director, Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL), said: “Praggnanandhaa’s achievement in becoming the first Indian to win Norway Chess, one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world, is a proud moment for Indian chess and Indian sport. We are incredibly proud of him and all that he has achieved in Oslo. He continues to make giant strides for Indian chess and Indian sport and his journey will inspire countless young boys and girls across the country to take up chess and pursue their dreams with confidence. We wish him continued success in the years ahead.”

Established in 2013, Norway Chess is widely regarded as one of the strongest and most prestigious events on the international chess calendar. Despite India’s rich chess legacy and the participation of several leading Indian Grandmasters over the years, neither five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand nor reigning World Champion Gukesh D had previously won the title, making Praggnanandhaa’s achievement particularly significant. His triumph comes amid a remarkable phase for Indian chess, with a new generation of Grandmasters consistently challenging and defeating the world’s best players on the biggest stages.

Widely regarded as the “Wimbledon of Chess”, Norway Chess annually brings together many of the game’s highest-ranked players. This year’s edition was among the strongest in recent memory, featuring multiple world-title contenders and some of the sport’s most accomplished Grandmasters.

Throughout the tournament, Praggnanandhaa displayed remarkable resilience and composure, repeatedly responding to setbacks with decisive performances to stay in contention and ultimately secure the crown.

His victories over Carlsen were particularly significant. Praggnanandhaa joined an elite group of players to have defeated the Norwegian twice in the same tournament and also became one of the few players to have recorded three classical victories over the five-time World Champion.

The triumph marks another landmark moment in Praggnanandhaa’s remarkable rise and further strengthens his standing among the game’s brightest talents. It also reflects the growing strength and depth of Indian chess, with a new generation of Grandmasters continuing to challenge the world’s best.

Praggnanandhaa is supported by Adani Sportsline through its “Garv Hai” initiative, which nurtures India’s next generation of sporting champions through financial support, international exposure and structured mentorship.

R Praggnanandhaa has etched his name in the annals of Indian chess by becoming the first player from India to secure the prestigious Norway Chess title. This milestone was achieved after a remarkable late surge during the tournament held in Oslo. The 20-year-old Grandmaster completed his journey to the top by defeating Germany’s Vincent Keymer in a gripping final round, marking one of the most impressive comebacks in the event’s history.

The significance of Praggnanandhaa’s victory is amplified by the strength of the lineup he faced. The elite tournament included top players such as World No.1 Magnus Carlsen, reigning world champion D Gukesh, Alireza Firouzja, and Wesley So, making the event one of the strongest in the global chess calendar.

As the tournament unfolded, Praggnanandhaa encountered challenges that threatened his title hopes. However, his ability to regroup and perform under pressure proved pivotal in securing the championship.

Path to Victory

The journey to the Norway Chess title was marked by a series of crucial classical victories for Praggnanandhaa. Among his notable wins were matches against top contenders Firouzja, Carlsen, and Gukesh. His decisive victory over Gukesh in Round 9 played a vital role in keeping him competitive as he entered the final round.

Entering the last round, Praggnanandhaa was embroiled in a tense three-way battle for the championship with Wesley So and Firouzja. The culmination of his strategic plays during the tournament set the stage for a dramatic final showdown, where he emerged triumphant.

A highlight of Praggnanandhaa’s campaign was his exceptional performance against Carlsen. He became only the second player, after India’s Viswanathan Anand, to defeat the Norwegian star twice in a single event. Furthermore, Praggnanandhaa’s victories over Carlsen marked a historic achievement, as he became the first player to defeat him in two classical matches within the 2026 tournament.

Impact on Indian Chess

This remarkable achievement further cements Praggnanandhaa’s status as a prominent figure in what many are calling a new golden generation of Indian chess players. His success in Oslo adds to his growing list of accomplishments, having already qualified for the Candidates Tournament and established himself as one of the world’s elite players.

Praggnanandhaa’s achievements serve as an inspiration to aspiring chess players in India and across the globe. His continued success highlights the potential within India’s chess community and the importance of nurturing young talent.

As the chess world reflects on his victory, it is clear that Praggnanandhaa’s journey has only just begun. With a title as significant as the Norway Chess championship now under his belt, he is poised to be a leading figure in future tournaments, contributing to the sport’s legacy in India.

Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa has once again made headlines by defeating World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen at the Norway Chess 2026 tournament held in Oslo. This victory has added another chapter to the intensifying rivalry between the two players, which has quickly become a prominent discussion point in contemporary chess circles. Praggnanandhaa’s win marks his second triumph over Carlsen at this event, following a notable victory in 2024, which was seen as a breakthrough moment in his career.

Significance of the Match

Praggnanandhaa’s win is particularly significant as it reinforces his position as one of the most promising talents in world chess. His first classical victory over Carlsen in 2024 not only indicated his potential but also signalled his emergence at the elite level. The latest bout serves to strengthen his reputation even further, implying a shift in the competitive dynamics between these two players.

Carlsen’s struggle in this tournament has raised eyebrows, as he reportedly faced difficulties with form and exhibited a series of time-management errors when pressured during key moments of play. Despite a strong reputation, Carlsen has started this tournament on shaky ground, leading to questions regarding his current competitive edge.

In the latest match, Carlsen entered with high expectations but soon found himself navigating a complicated middlegame challenge against his young opponent. Praggnanandhaa employed a steady and precise playing style throughout the game, demonstrating a level of control that ultimately decided the outcome.

Critical Moments and Final Outcome

As the match progressed, Praggnanandhaa gradually began to assert his dominance, taking advantage of Carlsen’s precarious position. However, the dynamics shifted during moments of severe time pressure, where Carlsen had the opportunity to create counterplay and potentially turn the game in his favour. Yet, this momentary glimmer of hope quickly dissipated.

In a dramatic final sequence, Carlsen faltered under the intense pressure of the clock, making a critical mistake that led to his resignation shortly thereafter. This defeat adds to the early challenges Carlsen is facing in this tournament and raises further questions about his performance moving forward.

The implications of this match extend beyond just the result, as it sheds light on the evolving competitive landscape in chess, particularly regarding rising stars like Praggnanandhaa. His ability to best an established champion such as Carlsen has not only captured the attention of chess enthusiasts but also solidified his place as a formidable force in the chess world.
