The countdown to Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event is officially underway, with the date set for September 9. The tech giant from Cupertino is preparing to introduce its highly anticipated iPhone 18 Pro series. Speculation suggests that Apple may break from tradition this year, potentially omitting the standard iPhone 18 from the unveiling, with an anticipated release for next year instead.

This year, Apple is expected to focus on three devices: the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and possibly its first foldable iPhone. As the event approaches, reports indicate that while these Pro models are likely to showcase advanced hardware, there may be challenges due to a global supply shock affecting component availability.

Informed sources have hinted at several exciting features and enhancements across the new models, setting expectations high ahead of the major announcement.

Design Specifications of the iPhone 18 Pro Lineup

The design elements of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are anticipated to retain familiar characteristics. The devices are projected to have display sizes of 6.3 inches for the iPhone 18 Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max, along with brushed aluminium frames and the notable rear camera arrangement.

However, there are indications that the camera module may experience slight design modifications, potentially resulting in a slightly thicker appearance. Reports also suggest that the front design will feature a slimmer Dynamic Island, as Apple aims to integrate the Face ID components beneath the glass surface.

Additionally, the devices are expected to incorporate LTPO+ display technology, which is anticipated to improve power efficiency while maintaining a smooth 120Hz refresh rate during scrolling activities.

Camera Innovations and Technical Advancements

One of the standout features of the new camera setup is set to be a physically adjustable aperture, which is reportedly undergoing testing. This advancement allows for real optical depth-of-field control rather than relying solely on software-based portrait modes.

The camera configuration is likely to include an enhanced telephoto sensor with a larger aperture and a stacked image sensor designed to reduce digital noise in low-light conditions. There are also discussions regarding a teleconverter accessory aimed at photography enthusiasts.

Between the two models, differences in zoom capabilities are expected: the Pro Max may offer an optical zoom range of up to six times, while the Pro model is anticipated to feature five times. Both variants will probably include 48-megapixel triple sensors along with an 18-megapixel front camera designed for Centre Stage functionality.

Performance and Pricing Expectations

The launch of the iPhone 18 Pro series is expected to coincide with the introduction of Apple’s A20 Pro chip. This new processor is set to be manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 2nm technology, which may lead to an 18 per cent increase in computational speed and a 30 per cent boost in energy efficiency compared to its predecessor.

In addition to the A20 Pro chip, the devices will likely feature Apple’s proprietary C2 modem, enhancing satellite connectivity to ensure users remain connected even in areas with limited cellular service.

As for pricing, industry insiders suggest that an increase is likely for the new models. Recently reported trends indicate a significant rise in memory costs due to heightened demand from artificial intelligence sectors. The anticipated retail price for the iPhone 18 Pro in India may hover between Rs 1,39,900 and Rs 1,44,900, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max could be priced between Rs 1,54,900 and Rs 1,59,900. Despite potential negotiations to mitigate some costs, consumers should prepare for higher price points at launch.

Last night, multiple artificial intelligence platforms experienced simultaneous outages, leaving users without access to essential tools for their work. Notable AI services, including ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok, faced disruptions, which elicited a mix of humour and concern among users accustomed to relying on these technologies.

As many users vented frustrations through social media, Elon Musk joined the discourse with a humorous analogy, suggesting that humans operating without AI resemble monkeys attempting to complete tasks ineffectively. Referencing a popular meme on X, Musk shared a clip of an orangutan awkwardly attempting to use a stone to drive a nail, likening this struggle to how humans might appear when coding without AI assistance.

The meme resonated with users, who engaged in playful comparisons between the orangutan and their own coding capabilities without the aid of artificial intelligence. Some commenters even described Claude as an observer akin to nature-documentary narrator David Attenborough, metaphorically watching humans code like the orangutan in the viral clip.

Causes Behind the Outages Remain Unclear

Despite the coincidental timing of these outages, the exact reason for the simultaneous malfunction of these AI platforms remains elusive. However, the individual companies have refuted the notion of a common underlying issue. OpenAI acknowledged elevated error rates affecting both ChatGPT and Codex on September 3, stating that the problems had been identified and resolved before service restoration.

Anthropic also reported a rise in errors impacting various Claude models. The company announced that it had pinpointed the source of these errors and was in the process of implementing a fix. A follow-up statement confirmed that the issues were addressed, and services had been restored.

Additionally, Grok faced a separate outage, with xAI’s status page initially indicating that issues were being addressed. After approximately three hours and 37 minutes, xAI communicated that the situation had been rectified and services were operating normally again.

Reliance on AI Highlighted by Service Disruption

Although the services eventually resumed, the outages served as a stark reminder of the increasing reliance on AI technologies in various professional fields. Developers often utilise AI for coding and debugging tasks, while writers depend on these platforms for drafting and editing content. Researchers frequently turn to chatbots for assistance with basic queries.

As a result, when the AI tools suddenly became inaccessible, many users found themselves grappling with tasks they would typically delegate to chatbots. This struggle aligns with the humorous commentary Musk provided, as he suggested that the advancements in AI have made traditional coding methods seem clumsy and inefficient.

In light of these developments, the reliance on AI appears to have become ingrained in everyday work processes for many individuals. The funny yet pointed analogy offered by Musk highlights the significant transformation in the way tasks are approached in the age of artificial intelligence.

Google has announced the launch of WeatherNext 3, its latest artificial intelligence model designed for weather forecasting. The system leverages data from geostationary satellites to generate high-resolution weather forecasts every hour. According to Google DeepMind and Google Research, this model has been characterised as “the most advanced and accurate global weather model to date” following independent evaluations by Brightband.

One of the significant enhancements of WeatherNext 3 is its ability to provide detailed forecasts at a 5-kilometre resolution for essential surface variables like temperature and moisture. Other atmospheric variables, including wind speed, are forecast at a 25-kilometre resolution. The company states this model offers a global weather overview approximately five times sharper than its predecessor, WeatherNext 2, which only provided forecasts on a 25-kilometre grid every six hours.

WeatherNext 3’s hourly refresh rate enables it to track rapidly changing weather conditions, such as storms and precipitation systems, more accurately than previous models. This improvement is largely attributed to the model’s data sourcing, which now incorporates real-time global satellite observations instead of relying on traditional numerical weather prediction methods that can experience a data lag of up to six hours.

Utilisation of Real-Time Data

The model’s reliance on a continuous stream of live geostationary satellite data allows it to maintain an updated view of atmospheric conditions. Additionally, WeatherNext 3 integrates data from weather stations, allowing it to factor in local geographical influences, such as mountains and coastlines. This is especially beneficial for regions in Latin America, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific, which have limited access to high-resolution weather forecasts due to the prohibitive costs associated with traditional supercomputing models.

Furthermore, the model has been trained using precipitation data sourced from NASA’s Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) alongside Google’s own global precipitation reanalysis. These enhancements reportedly resulted in a Continuous Ranked Probability Score improvement of up to 60 per cent compared to IMERG and 10 per cent against traditional rain gauge measurements for short-term forecasts.

Applications for Renewable Energy and Integration with Google Products

WeatherNext 3 has also been adapted for the renewable energy sector. The model can provide 100-metre wind speed forecasts, roughly corresponding to the height of wind turbines, along with precise estimations of cloud cover and solar radiation. This capability is designed to aid wind and solar energy operators in predicting their electricity generation potential more accurately.

The integration of WeatherNext 3 into various Google products is already underway. Users planning activities a day or more in advance are expected to benefit from precipitation forecasts that are up to 50 per cent more accurate. The most pronounced improvements in accuracy will likely be observed in regions where forecasts have historically lacked reliability.

In summary, Google’s WeatherNext 3 presents a significant step forward in the field of weather forecasting technology, offering enhanced accuracy and reliability through its innovative use of real-time data. The company’s commitment to improving forecasting capabilities represents a major advancement that could have far-reaching implications across multiple sectors.

Nvidia has officially announced its acquisition of Hugging Face, an open-source AI platform, for $12.93 billion. This transaction is poised to be one of the most significant in Nvidia’s history, pending the necessary regulatory approvals. CEO Jensen Huang made the announcement through a blog post, where he expressed enthusiasm about the deal. Huang stated that Nvidia plans to enhance Hugging Face’s platform, fortify its infrastructure, and broaden access to artificial intelligence for developers and institutions globally.

Understanding Hugging Face’s Influence

Hugging Face, established in 2016 by Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf, serves as a prominent resource for open-source AI. The platform has developed into a vital component of the open-model ecosystem, hosting over three million models, one million applications, and half a million datasets, which are utilised by more than 18 million developers and over 200,000 companies. This extensive digital presence marks a significant acquisition for Nvidia.

CEO Jensen Huang clarified concerns regarding the platform’s future, asserting that Hugging Face will continue to operate as an open platform accessible to the entire AI community. Developers will still have the freedom to select their preferred models, frameworks, cloud services, and computing platforms. He emphasised that using Nvidia’s own computing resources would not be a requirement for leveraging Hugging Face’s offerings.

Clément Delangue, CEO of Hugging Face, communicated the rationale behind the acquisition via social media. He described the need for scaling operations and noted that increased compute capabilities, support, collaboration, and visibility were crucial for further growth. Delangue revealed that discussions with Huang led to this strategic partnership, aiming to achieve those goals.

Nvidia’s Strategy for Open Models

The issue of water consumption linked to artificial intelligence has garnered significant public attention. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has responded to these concerns by asserting that the amount of water used by AI data centres is minimal compared to what is required for traditional agricultural practices.

During an appearance on the Sources podcast, Altman stated that public anxieties regarding AI’s water footprint may be exaggerated. He pointed out that while individuals may lament the water used in AI processes, they often overlook the water demands of farming practices, particularly for crops such as almonds.

Altman mentioned, “For every 38,000 queries made to ChatGPT, the water consumption equates to that of a single almond’s production in California.” Although Altman admitted that he was presenting figures from memory, he maintained that his estimates were reasonably close to the actual statistics. This argument was about reframing the narrative surrounding water use in the context of AI technology.

Water Requirements for AI Queries

Recent discussions have put a spotlight on water efficiency in AI systems while comparing it with agricultural water use. Altman previously indicated that a single ChatGPT request consumes approximately 0.32 millilitres of water. In contrast, research conducted by experts from the US Geological Survey revealed that the cultivation of one almond necessitates around 3.56 litres of water.

Based on these calculations, it can be inferred that one almond consumes as much water as 11,000 ChatGPT queries. Altman highlighted the contradiction where people consume large quantities of almonds without acknowledging the water associated with their production.

He described the current perceptions surrounding AI’s water usage as a “robust meme,” suggesting critics often mischaracterise and misunderstand it. He clarified that while thermal management technologies, such as evaporative cooling, were once employed by data centres, the majority have since transitioned to more efficient methods that parallel typical water usage in commercial buildings.

Public Sentiment and Industry Practices

Resistance to new data centre constructions is becoming increasingly pronounced, especially in the United States. A survey conducted by Gallup revealed that 71 per cent of Americans oppose having a data centre close to their residences. Among their reasons, 70 per cent cited environmental concerns, with half specifically mentioning resource utilisation, and 18 per cent referring to water use as a key factor.

A report published in 2024 by a Virginia state commission indicated a disparity in water usage among data centres, with most facilities consuming water levels comparable to those of large office spaces. As the western United States grapples with water shortages, there have been growing calls for improvements in data centre water management.

Despite the challenges, tech companies have vowed to enhance their water efficiency. Notably, Amazon disclosed that it reduced its data centre water consumption by 2 per cent in 2025 compared to the previous year, using approximately 2.5 billion gallons of water, or over 9 billion litres. Concurrently, Microsoft reported a significant improvement in its data centre water efficiency, claiming a 90 per cent increase compared to its earlier facilities.

The new iPhone Handoff feature in iOS 27 allows users to utilise a single phone number across two different iPhones seamlessly. This innovation addresses a common inconvenience experienced by smartphone users, eliminating the need for manual SIM card swaps, call forwarding, or acquiring a second cellular line.

This feature was previewed during the WWDC 2026 keynote in June, although detailed information was not immediately provided. Recent updates from MacRumors have clarified how this feature will actually function, providing users with a clearer understanding of its implementation.

Handoff Feature’s Functionality and Setup

Users can conveniently configure the iPhone Handoff feature via the Settings app, specifically within the Cellular menu. During the initial setup process, individuals will select one iPhone to serve as the primary device, while designating the other as a companion device. This setup is crucial for allowing users to switch between devices effortlessly while maintaining the same phone number.

According to Apple, the primary eSIM profile remains linked to the main iPhone, whereas a companion eSIM will be created for the secondary device. This arrangement ensures that users can alternate between their two iPhones without any disruption in service or connectivity.

Account management is centralised, meaning all cellular plans and settings are controlled through the main iPhone. Additionally, the location sharing feature automatically updates based on the device that is currently connected to the service, allowing contacts to accurately view the location of the active phone in the Find My application.

Carrier Support Requirements

For the iPhone Handoff feature to operate effectively, having iOS 27 installed on both devices will not be the sole requirement. The functionality appears to be significantly dependent on telecom carrier support, similar to how cellular provisioning functions with the Apple Watch. Early indications suggest that major carriers like T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany may be among the first to endorse this feature.

This advancement could benefit users who rely on secondary devices for activities such as exercise, travel, or outdoor tasks, as it offers a safer alternative to using high-end flagship phones in potentially hazardous environments. The feature is positioned as a major improvement for those who balance multiple devices in their daily lives.

iOS 27 is anticipated to be released to the public later this month following a rigorous three-month beta testing phase. Users can expect an official announcement from Apple concerning carrier compatibility and specific markets eligible to access this new feature shortly.
