The Gujarat State Civil Supplies Corporation Ltd (GSCSCL), a Gujarat government joint venture, has adopted advanced technology to improve the speed and transparency of grain distribution from 250 warehouses to around 17,000 Pandit Deendayal Grahak Bhandar, or Fair Price Shops (FPS).

According to an official release from the Gujarat Chief Minister’s Office, the corporation has developed ICT Logistics Software to digitise its supply chain operations under the guidance of Food and Civil Supplies Minister Ramanbhai Solanki.

GPS And Route Optimisation Track Vehicles

The software enables real-time tracking of vehicles transporting commodities from Food Corporation of India (FCI) depots to state warehouses and Fair Price Shops.

Vehicles have been equipped with GPS systems and machine learning-based route optimisation technology. The system generates immediate alerts when a vehicle deviates from its assigned route or when its GPS connection is disconnected.

Geofencing and Electronic Proof of Delivery (EPOD) have also been introduced at warehouses and Fair Price Shops to verify consignments accurately when they are received.

The corporation said suspicious activities are continuously monitored through a Command-and-Control Centre at its head office.

The Public Distribution System portal provides live information on warehouse stocks along with daily, weekly and monthly dashboard reports. It has also been integrated with the ICT Logistics Project and the FCI’s Anna Darpan portal.

7,000 CCTV Cameras Strengthen Warehouse Security

The corporation has installed around 7,000 CCTV cameras across its warehouses to strengthen security and prevent theft and adulteration. The surveillance network includes Bullet, Dome, PTZ and ANPR cameras.

An advanced Video Wall system allows officials to monitor the cameras live from warehouses, offices of Deputy District Managers and District Supply Officers, as well as the Command-and-Control Centre at the head office.

The integrated surveillance and logistics systems are intended to provide officials with greater visibility over the movement and storage of commodities across the distribution network.

Digital System Used For Farmer Procurement

Technology is also being used in the procurement of grains from farmers through the Farmer Procurement Portal (FPP). The system facilitates procurement at the Minimum Support Price (MSP).

Farmer registration and procurement are carried out after Aadhaar details, bank account information and land ownership documents are verified through demographic and biometric authentication.

Farmers are also kept informed about different stages of the procurement process through SMS notifications.

The digital systems across logistics, warehouse monitoring and farmer procurement are aimed at improving traceability and transparency across Gujarat’s food supply chain, from procurement and storage to the distribution of commodities through Fair Price Shops.

Rushabh Shah

New Sheth P. T. Multispeciality Hospital

New Sheth P. T. Multispeciality Hospital

The recent sighting of a rat consuming a puff at a tea stall in Surat Railway Station led authorities to close the establishment and take disciplinary measures against its operator. A video captured by a bystander during the early hours of August 29 shows the rodent inside the glass display counter, feasting on a puff that was displayed among other food items intended for passengers. This incident quickly gained traction on social media, prompting immediate responses from railway authorities.

Immediate Closure and Clean-Up

In light of the viral video, the Indian Railways took swift action. According to Vineet Abhishek, the Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, the stall was promptly shut down upon the railway’s receipt of the video. Additionally, the area where the incident occurred was thoroughly cleaned to address any potential hygiene concerns. The Railway Commercial Department has also initiated appropriate measures against the stall owner.

Ongoing Contract Review

As part of the response to the incident, Indian Railways is considering steps that could lead to the permanent termination of the stall’s contract. This move highlights the organisation’s commitment to maintaining standards of cleanliness and hygiene within its food service areas. Authorities are taking the incident very seriously and are ensuring that all necessary precautions are implemented moving forward.

Prior Hygiene Initiatives

This occurrence follows a recent announcement by Western Railway regarding a dedicated deep cleaning and sanitisation campaign aimed specifically at food stalls located at Surat and Udhna railway stations. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort to enhance cleanliness and hygiene practices across various food service points within the railway network. Vineet Abhishek confirmed that rodent control measures were conducted at Surat Railway Station on August 16, demonstrating the railway’s proactive approach towards ensuring safe food environments for passengers.

Focus on Accountability

Authorities have indicated that strict actions will be enforced against those responsible for maintaining hygiene in these establishments. Ensuring cleanliness in food stalls is paramount, not only for passenger safety but also to uphold the reputation of Indian Railways as a reliable travel option. The series of measures and campaigns being undertaken are aimed at restoring public confidence in the food options available at railway stations.

Conclusion and Future Actions

The rat incident at Surat Railway Station has prompted a significant response from railway authorities, indicating a zero-tolerance approach towards unsanitary conditions in food service areas. The closure of the tea stall and the evaluation of the operator’s contract underline the railway’s commitment to passenger health and safety. Ongoing initiatives, alongside immediate responses to such incidents, reflect a structured plan to ensure all food stalls adhere to the highest standards. Future actions will likely focus on reinforcing these standards and preventing similar occurrences from happening in the future.

A man from Gujarat’s Sabarkantha district has been arrested in relation to the murder of an eight-year-old boy. During police questioning, the accused, Savanji Thakor, reportedly confessed to having also killed the boy’s 12-year-old brother approximately one year earlier. This alarming revelation emerged as Thakor was interrogated about the recent case of the younger sibling’s kidnapping and murder.

The police disclosed that the young boy was abducted and subsequently murdered, with his body disposed of in a well. As authorities dug deeper during their investigation, they uncovered significant details regarding the circumstances surrounding the older brother’s prior disappearance, tracing the matter back to Thakor’s alleged actions.

According to police records, Thakor admitted to the murder of the 12-year-old as well, allegedly stating that he had kidnapped the boy before ultimately disposing of him in a check dam. This shocking confession has sparked further inquiries and legal measures against Thakor.

Underlying Issues of Land Dispute and Superstitions

Authorities have revealed that a persistent land dispute between Thakor and the family of the two young boys is believed to be a contributing factor behind the tragic events. Allegations of black magic have also surfaced, with Thakor allegedly suspecting that the family was responsible for various misfortunes that afflict his own household. This deep-rooted animosity reportedly escalated to the point of violence, culminating in the tragic killings.

For over a year, the family of the 12-year-old had been searching for their son, nurturing hope for his safe return. However, that hope was shattered when Thakor’s confession provided grim clarity regarding their child’s fate. The police are now focused on establishing a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to both murders, examining any potential connections to the ongoing land dispute.

Thakor’s alleged beliefs and actions exemplify how superstition can intertwine with real-world conflicts, exacerbating tensions and leading to devastating consequences. The investigation into the dynamics between the families involved is currently a priority for local law enforcement as they work to uncover the full story behind these horrific acts.

Continuing Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Following Thakor’s confession to both murders, police have filed an additional case against him. Authorities remain committed to thoroughly investigating the circumstances surrounding these crimes, ensuring that all relevant evidence and testimonies are meticulously gathered. The pressures stemming from familial disputes can often escalate situations, as evidenced in this tragic case.

Thakor is presently in police custody while authorities continue to collect information pertinent to both cases. The findings from the ongoing inquiry will be crucial in shaping the legal proceedings that will follow. The community is awaiting further updates as investigators seek to bring closure to the grieving family.

This case has drawn significant media attention, highlighting the potential dangers that can arise from unresolved disputes and the impact of superstitions on community relations.

On August 26, 2026, the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) achieved a significant milestone by registering its highest number of single-day advance ticket bookings through its mobile application. A total of 88,626 passengers utilised the app to secure their journeys, marking an unprecedented figure in the corporation’s history.

Record-Breaking Achievements

The announcement was made via a press release from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), which highlighted the contributions of Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi in fostering a conducive environment for this achievement. The increased usage of the mobile app demonstrates the Gujarat government’s commitment to ensuring clean, safe, and secure public travel, thereby encouraging a growing number of passengers to book their tickets digitally.

Prior to this record, the highest number of single-day mobile bookings for GSRTC was 85,247, which occurred on November 4, 2024. Another notable date was October 25, 2025, when 85,205 tickets were recorded as booked via the application.

Enhanced Passenger Experience with Technology

Recognising the importance of modern technology in enhancing travel convenience, GSRTC has developed advanced mobile applications aimed at simplifying the ticket booking process. The ‘GSRTC Ticket Booking’ app allows passengers to purchase tickets without the need to wait in lengthy queues at bus stations. In addition, the ‘GSRTC Track Live’ app provides real-time updates on bus timings and locations, further enhancing the travel experience.

Emergency Response Enhancements

In a related development, on August 25, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi inaugurated an additional fleet of 500 state-of-the-art “112-Janrakshak” vehicles at the Nava Sachivalay in Gandhinagar. These vehicles have been added to the Gujarat Police fleet, aimed at providing swift and effective emergency response services to the state’s residents. With the latest additions, a total of 1,000 “Janrakshak” vehicles will remain operational across Gujarat, ensuring round-the-clock availability for emergency situations.

The Chief Minister’s Office noted that the introduction of a sophisticated 150-seat call centre, along with a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and caller location technology, has decreased the average police response time to 10 minutes and 49 seconds. The state aims to reduce this response time to under 8 minutes with the ongoing deployment of new vehicles and advanced technological solutions. Additionally, the 112 panic button feature has been incorporated into popular ride-hailing apps like Ola, Uber, Rapido, and Bharat Taxi for added convenience.

Commitment to Public Safety

Minister of State Kamlesh Patel remarked on Gujarat’s ongoing commitment to peace, prosperity, and security. He expressed confidence that the Gujarat Police remain dedicated to public safety through initiatives like the 112 emergency service, which is designed to ensure that police assistance reaches citizens promptly.

Since the Janrakshak Project was launched, it has facilitated integrated services for over 11.04 lakh emergency calls, and provided immediate assistance in more than 6.74 lakh police emergencies within a short span of just eleven months.

These initiatives by the Gujarat government reflect an ongoing effort to enhance both public transport services and emergency response capabilities, significantly benefiting the citizens of Gujarat.

Former Vice-Chancellor of Gujarat University, Neerja Gupta, has refuted claims regarding financial misconduct involving Rs 40 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK). Gupta described the allegations as a “misleading and malicious narrative” intended to damage her reputation. Her public statement followed protests on August 27, 2026, organized by the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and Congress leaders, who accused her of mismanaging funds allocated to the university.

According to the allegations, the university purportedly received Rs 40 crore, with claims that the transactions were unaccounted for. Responding to this, Gupta clarified that though Rs 40 crore was the sanctioned project amount, the university did not receive the entire sum. She stated that only Rs 16.50 crore had been released as the first instalment, with no further funding allocated.

Gupta emphasised that the funds were intended for the PIPMGVK Jain Manuscript initiative, and had been credited to the university’s account, not her personal finances. She detailed that out of the Rs 16.50 crore received, Rs 1,90,80,228 was spent, and the remaining Rs 14,59,19,772, along with interest accrued, was returned to the university via a bank draft submitted concurrently with her resignation.

Concerns About Enquiry Panel’s Impartiality

In her response, Gupta also expressed concerns regarding the enquiry committee established by the acting Vice-Chancellor to investigate the allegations against her. She highlighted that two committee members had previously shown dissatisfaction with her, both in person and in writing, over the past eleven months.

Gupta indicated that she had extended multiple invitations for dialogue with these members, with none of them accepting. “Can we call such a committee impartial?” she questioned, urging the in-charge Vice-Chancellor to consult the Higher Education Department before proceeding with any further actions related to the investigation.

Gupta reiterated her willingness to address any inquiries and undergo scrutiny, while imploring the university and student organisations to refrain from acting on information she labelled as factually incorrect. Gupta’s comments suggest a significant level of concern regarding procedural integrity in the ongoing investigation, as she called for transparency and fairness in the process.

Clarifications on Consultancy and Research Work

Additionally, Gupta responded to questions regarding the ethics of a Vice-Chancellor engaging in consultancy or paid research during their tenure. She argued that academic leaders have a duty to apply their expertise for the advancement of the nation, asserting that qualifications have a bearing on consultancy roles and research initiatives and don’t depend on their position or salary as Vice-Chancellor.

Gupta referenced her previous work with the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) to illustrate her point, explaining that she had initiated an ICHR project while at Sanchi University. Following her appointment at Gujarat University, the project was transferred to the new institution, receiving the corresponding funding.

She encouraged those levelling accusations to pursue documentary proof instead of relying solely on the allegedly mismanaged figure of Rs 40 crore. Furthermore, Gupta stated that the institution has documented all expenditures related to the PMJVK through proper invoicing, and that the financial accounts concerning the project were currently with the chartered accountant’s office. She confirmed that a utilisation certificate was in preparation for submission to the relevant PMJVK authorities.

The India Pharma Archives was officially inaugurated by Anupriya Patel, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilisers, during the IIMA Healthcare Summit held in Ahmedabad on August 19, 2026. This endeavour aims to preserve 125 years of history related to the Indian pharmaceutical industry. Among the dignitaries present were Punya Salila Srivastava, Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and Manoj Joshi, Secretary of the Department of Pharmaceuticals, alongside numerous industry leaders and scholars.

Growth of the Initiative

The initiative has been supported by the earlier publication of a significant coffee-table book titled “The Alchemy of Cure,” which established the groundwork for the archives. The India Pharma Archives is intended to expand upon this foundation by creating a comprehensive collection of historical materials from the pharmaceutical sector. This includes company histories, archival collections, films, interview transcripts, and timelines that enhance the educational resources available to students, researchers, and policymakers.

The design of the India Pharma Archives goes beyond that of a conventional exhibition. It is conceptualised as a dynamic and continuously evolving archive that aims to represent the living history of the Indian pharmaceutical landscape. This unique approach is intended to make the institutional memory of the industry more accessible, thus enriching the knowledge base for future generations.

Industry representatives have highlighted the significance of the archives. Dr Sharvil Patel, Managing Director of Zydus Lifesciences and President of the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA), remarked on the historical importance of the Indian pharmaceutical industry. He stated that the archives celebrate a remarkable narrative of scientific achievement, entrepreneurship, and global influence. They are expected to serve as a platform for fostering new ideas, collaborations, and innovative solutions to future healthcare challenges.

Educational and Historical Significance

Sudarshan Jain, Secretary General of the IPA, underscored the dual purpose of the India Pharma Archives. He noted that it is not only focused on preserving the rich history of the industry but also on safeguarding the legacy of innovation for future generations. By creating an educational resource, the archives aim to provide valuable insights for students and researchers, fostering a deeper understanding of the resilience and breakthroughs that have characterised India’s pharmaceutical sector.

Moreover, the archives are expected to reinforce India’s emerging status as a global leader in the pharmaceutical industry. By showcasing innovations and achievements, it aims to inspire future developments in healthcare solutions and strengthen the sector’s contribution to global health scenarios.

The India Pharma Archives, thus, stands as a crucial undertaking that reflects the collective history of the Indian pharmaceutical landscape while simultaneously laying the groundwork for future advancements. This initiative embodies the spirit of collaboration and progress that characterises the nation’s evolving healthcare sector.
