Expanded Categories and Assessment

EWISR 2026-27 ranks schools across three broad categories and 29 sub-categories, covering day schools, boarding schools and international schools. It also recognises government institutions, special-needs schools, budget private schools and philanthropic schools.

The evaluation parameters include academic reputation, faculty competence, individual attention, leadership, curriculum and pedagogy, co-curricular and sports education, community service, parental involvement, teacher development, value for money, student well-being, infrastructure and special-needs education.

Ivy League Category

The Ivy League category, introduced in 2025, recognises schools that have consistently performed strongly across key parameters over multiple years. All schools in this category receive a common No. 1 ranking, with one to five stars used to distinguish their performance.

The five-star Ivy League schools for 2026-27 include Inventure Academy and Vasant Valley School among day schools; Daly College and Greenwood High in the day-cum-boarding category; Mayo College among boarding schools; and Dhirubhai Ambani International School and Oberoi International School among international day schools.

The unrest was magnified by claims from students stating that a female student had died by suicide on campus previously, suggesting her ‘ghost’ was haunting the hostel. University authorities and police officials refuted these allegations, asserting that no suicides had occurred.

According to the university administration, reports indicated that certain individuals had been knocking on students’ doors at night, contributing to the spread of these baseless rumours. Claims regarding the disappearance of two female students also emerged, with related posts being circulated on social media platforms.

Police Response and Assurance of Safety

Deputy Superintendent of Police Sukhdev Singh arrived at the university to address the situation. He stated that no specific names had been brought forward regarding the alleged missing students and that no direct information had been received about which students were reportedly unaccounted for. Singh confirmed that the police would take the complaints seriously and conduct a thorough investigation.

Singh assured parents that the situation on campus had returned to a state of peace and affirmed that students were safe within the university. With police remaining present at the site, security measures continued to be monitored closely to prevent further unrest.

Additionally, both the police and university administration committed to reviewing CCTV footage from the area to clarify events related to the knocking incidents and the ensuing rumour propagation. After receiving assurances from authorities, students began to disperse gradually, returning to their respective hostels and ending the protest peacefully.

Maysa Jalbout, the Director of ‘Education Cannot Wait’, referenced a visit to Sudan as indicative of the urgent situation faced by children seeking education. She encountered an 18-year-old girl in a cramped classroom, who despite being displaced by violence and facing personal tragedies, remains resolute about her desire to continue her education.

During her visit, Jalbout noted uncomfortable conditions, including a classroom temperature of 44 degrees Celsius, exacerbated by the absence of basic amenities such as water and electricity. She shared how the girl passionately urged for the inclusion of her siblings and similarly positioned peers in educational opportunities. The constraints of the classroom resulted in many children awaiting entry outside, emphasizing the need for more educational facilities, a message that Jalbout carried to the UN meeting.

Statistics and Commitments from Leaders

On Thursday, Gordon Brown, the former British Prime Minister and the UN’s Special Envoy for Global Education, reported alarming statistics regarding global education. He stated that 273 million children are currently out of school, while an additional 270 million are enrolled but are not meeting essential learning benchmarks in literacy and numeracy by the age of eleven.

Brown pointed to the hindrances faced by children living in regions afflicted by conflict or climate change, underscoring a clear call for action from governments worldwide to fulfil their previously pledged commitments. Brown further noted that many governments promised to allocate twenty per cent of their budgets to education.

He called on donor nations to stay committed to the UN’s development goals established in 2015, which aim for inclusive quality education by 2030. Highlighting the slow pace of progress, he remarked that denying a child access to an education has lasting repercussions that extend beyond the individual, affecting entire families and communities. Despite the challenges, the UN gathering yielded some positive outcomes.

The Global Partnership for Education announced that $3.5 billion has been secured to aid over 90 lower-income nations in enhancing their educational systems. This funding comprises expected and confirmed pledges totalling $2.1 billion from governments and private donors, along with $1.4 billion in co-financing, including substantial contributions from development finance institutions and philanthropic initiatives.

Addressing Educational Needs in Conflict Zones

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, who was part of the funding campaign, expressed optimism that the financial resources will assist countries like Nigeria in overcoming barriers to education, particularly for girls. Jalbout reaffirmed the focus of Education Cannot Wait on the 258 million school-age children impacted by various crises, a figure that underscores the vast array of unmet educational needs.

She announced an emergency investment of $3 million designated for children in Gaza and the West Bank, to support some of the most vulnerable members of that community. Jalbout stressed that the situation in Gaza is particularly dire, noting a high incidence of child amputees, a sobering statistic that reflects the broader humanitarian crisis.

She pointed out that survival for these children is merely the beginning; the loss of a limb or family should not equate to the loss of their future. Amid this backdrop, 660,000 children in Gaza remain without schooling for the third consecutive year, whilst around 70,000 younger children are denied access to preschool education.

In addition to Gaza, the organisation revealed that $1 million supports educational recovery for children affected by recent floods in Nepal. During her visit to Sudan, Jalbout announced $22 million in funding aimed at aiding hundreds of thousands of children, although she noted that eight million young people in the region are still out of school. The initiatives discussed during the UN meeting are crucial in addressing the extensive challenges posed by global crises impacting children’s education.
