Among the roads proposed for renaming are Lenin Sarani, Karl Marx Sarani, and Ho Chi Minh Sarani. Tathagata Roy suggested that Karl Marx Sarani, located in Kidderpore, could be renamed after notable Bengali poets such as Michael Madhusudan Dutt or Rangalal Bandyopadhyay, citing their historical connection to the area.

Additionally, he indicated an interest in renaming Lenin Sarani, formerly known as Dharmatala Street, in honour of Debaprasad Ghosh, a mathematician and former president of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. In addressing the renaming of Ho Chi Minh Sarani, Roy proposed the alternative name of Martin Luther King Jr., a prominent American civil rights leader.

He has also expressed a desire to reconsider names associated with figures from the Muslim community, recommending that public places named after them could instead pay tribute to individuals he characterized as “nationalist Muslims”. One specific suggestion was to rename the Titumir bus stand in Barasat after well-respected personalities.

These include people such as writer Qazi Abdul Wadud and educationist Begum Rokeya. Furthermore, Roy has brought forward the idea of renaming certain railway stations along the Tollygunge-Garia stretch of the Blue Line to reflect the actual geographical areas rather than historical figures.

He emphasised that this change would be beneficial for both commuters and local residents. In addition, he advocated for naming a significant city road after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who played a crucial role in India’s independence and governance.

Future Steps and Committee Composition

The recommendations from the committee will eventually be forwarded to the state Assembly for consideration. In addition to Roy, the committee’s members include notable figures such as Chief Minister’s adviser Subrata Gupta and Kolkata Municipal Corporation Commissioner Smita Pandey.

The episode comes in the wake of remarks made by Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, head of Bageshwar Dham, who urged Bengali Hindus to refrain from consuming non-vegetarian food during the Durga Puja festivities. Shastri controversially referred to those who did not comply as “pakhandi,” or hypocritical.

During his visit to Kalighat, Adhikari was questioned regarding Shastri’s comments. He acknowledged that the preacher was entitled to his opinion but emphasised individual freedom in dietary decisions. Adhikari stated, “A saint has expressed his opinion. State alleges non-cooperation

The state administration has maintained that Roy failed to cooperate with the investigation. Acting on earlier directions from the apex court, authorities submitted video footage and written records of police interrogation. According to the Solicitor General, these documents reveal that Roy gave evasive and inconsistent responses instead of clear answers.

Senior advocates Gopal Shankar Narayan and Ayan Bhattacharya, representing Roy, sought to counter the claims of non-cooperation. They submitted a counter-affidavit, arguing that their client has been compliant with investigative procedures.

The case also involves allegations that Roy was engaged in the illegal sale of government land and fabrication of documents in Salboni. A Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court in Midnapore had issued an arrest warrant against him after he failed to respond to police summons.

Despite this, the Supreme Court has granted Roy interim protection, directing him to cooperate with the investigation and appear before authorities between 10 AM and 6 PM.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the Supreme Court bench has scheduled the next hearing for Thursday, where further developments in this high-profile case are expected.

During the inspections, officials discovered significant quantities of spoiled food. In total, 1,224 kg of contaminated items were destroyed as part of the enforcement action taken during this drive to enhance food safety across the city.

In addition to operating food establishments, raids were conducted in various malls throughout Kolkata to inspect food courts and their operational standards. Officials examined kitchens, focusing on the handling and storage of food items, as well as the overall cleanliness of the premises. Particular attention was paid to methods of storing frozen foods, ensuring they complied with health and safety standards.

Notably, officials reported finding unsatisfactory hygiene practices in some eateries, including the presence of pests. In one major sweet shop, cockroaches were discovered inside a refrigerator, raising serious concerns regarding their adherence to cleanliness standards.

Locations such as Bentinck Street and Salt Lake were also subjects of scrutiny. Here, inspectors assessed the quality of raw materials and spices used in food preparation, further reinforcing the need for rigorous compliance with health regulations in all food establishments.

Following the suspension of their licences, the affected restaurants and sweet shops will have the opportunity to rectify their shortcomings. If these establishments manage to comply with food safety regulations, their licences may be reconsidered in the future, according to the authorities. Pandey emphasised that heightened vigilance will be expected from food vendors as the Puja festival approaches. The aim is to encourage establishments to enhance their service quality and maintain higher cleanliness standards. “Previously, we didn’t resort to suspensions, but now we have a free hand to act,” she asserted.

Nomination Process and Timeline

Stranded passengers faced acute hardships as trains remained locked down at intermediate stations like Tildanga and Malda Town. Many frustrated commuters were seen navigating waterlogged tracks on foot to reach nearby highways.

In its initial phase, 100 personnel have been deployed in Kolkata, while 50 members each will be stationed in Darjeeling (hills) and the Sundarbans. The government also plans to extend the force’s presence to key tourist destinations, including Digha, Mandarmani, Mukutmanipur, Tarapith, and the Terai-Dooars region.

The force comprises young recruits up to 40 years of age along with retired soldiers from the State Sainik Board. Members are designated as ‘Veer’, while team leaders are titled ‘Veer Nayak’.

Pay, benefits, and insurance cover

‘Veers’ will receive a monthly honorarium of Rs 25,000, while ‘Veer Nayaks’ will be paid Rs 40,000, both with an annual increment of 3 percent. In terms of safety, personnel are covered by insurance of Rs 10 lakh in case of death or severe injury during operations, and Rs 5 lakh for permanent disability.

Priority in recruitment will be given to the first batch of Agniveer scheme inductees (joining from January 2027) and retired personnel from police, fire, forest, and disaster management departments. The government is also working towards reserving around 20 percent of positions for such candidates in disciplined forces.

Lessons from past disasters

Referring to past crises such as tree clearance challenges during the Cyclone Amphan and infrastructure failures like the Majherhat flyover collapse, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for a dedicated and well-equipped response team. She attributed several past accidents to systemic lapses, including poor planning and lack of structural checks.

Members of the Arjun Bahini recently rescued around 20 individuals alive following a building collapse in Taratala, showcasing the force’s operational readiness even in its early phase.

Focus on modern equipment and funding

The Chief Minister stated that sufficient financial support has been received from the Centre and would be used to procure modern equipment and vehicles. She also assured that the safety and welfare of rescue personnel and their families would be prioritised.

On concerns raised about recent natural disasters in Nepal and their possible impact on Darjeeling, the government confirmed that a proposal submitted by MP Raju Bista has been forwarded to the Chief Secretary. A joint survey by the Centre and the state will assess the geological stability of the hills, with findings to be made public soon.
