The renowned Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, held its Holi celebrations during the early morning Bhasma Aarti on March 3. The sanctum was adorned with gulal, and Lord Mahakal was decorated with bhang and dry fruits, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. The temple opened its doors at 4 AM for the ritual, allowing devotees to participate in the auspicious ceremonies from the beginning of the day.

Rituals and Offerings for the Deity

During the Bhasma Aarti, the priests performed abhishekam, a ceremonial bathing of Lord Mahakal using water, followed by additional worship with Panchamrit, a mixture made from milk, curd, ghee, sugar, and fresh fruit juices. Special rituals included abhishekam with saffron-infused water and Vijaya bhang, enhancing the sacred atmosphere. The deity was decoratively adorned with bhang, sandalwood, and dry fruits, embodying a divine presence appreciated by the gathered devotees.

Devotees Engage in Festive Spirit

The atmosphere inside the sanctum was filled with exuberance as priests and pujaris celebrated Holi together, showering gulal in honor of the deity. Attendees of the Bhasma Aarti were seen immersed in colors, underscoring the spirit of the festival. Bhog, which consists of fruits and sweets, was offered to Baba Mahakal, attracting a significant number of devotees seeking blessings.

Sacred Ash Observances

On this occasion, sacred ash, known as bhasma, was presented to Lord Mahakal by representatives of the Mahanirvani Akhara. This traditional offering is believed to be particularly cherished by Baba Mahakal. Rituals included the belief that after offering the bhasma, the deity transforms from a formless to a manifest form, symbolizing divine presence. Raghav Pujari, a temple priest, noted the importance of Holika Dahan performed the night prior, which marked the beginning of the festival activities.

Expressions of Devotion from Visitors

A diverse group of devotees, including Neha Sharma from Canada, expressed immense joy at the unique Holi celebrations within the venerable temple. She remarked on the positive energy permeating the celebrations and shared her happiness after receiving darshan of Mahakal. The occasion brought together thousands of people, all united in their reverence and hope for health and peace both domestically and internationally.

The Significance of Mahakaleshwar Temple

The Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India, holding significant religious importance for people worldwide. The early morning Bhasma Aarti, a distinctive ritual in which Lord Shiva is worshipped with sacred ash, continues to be a central part of the temple’s practices and attracts a large gathering of devotees during festivals.

Holika Dahan 2026 is set to commence at one of the most revered locations for Hindus, the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, on the evening of March 3. As festivities unfold across the country later that night, the first Holika Dahan will take place at this temple during the evening aarti. This long-standing ritual not only serves as a devotional function but also sets the tone for Holi celebrations throughout India. Worshippers believe that when Holika is ignited first in the presence of Lord Shiva, the festival begins auspiciously, free from negativity.

Cultural Context and Beliefs

The deity Mahakal is regarded as the king of Ujjain and symbolizes both time and mortality. Traditional practices dictate that significant festivals commence in the royal court before reaching the general public. This tradition influences the Holika Dahan at Mahakaleshwar. According to priests, there are no specific timing restrictions for the ritual, as Lord Shiva transcends time. The lighting of the Holika fire is intended to dispel adverse energies from the city, establishing a positive atmosphere ahead of the broader Holi celebrations.

Spiritual Significance of the Ritual

Similar to rituals performed elsewhere, Holika Dahan signifies the defeat of evil and the safeguarding of Prahlad. However, at Mahakal, this event holds additional layers of meaning. The flames represent the worship of Shiva and Shakti, symbolizing the annihilation of ignorance and the invocation of clarity and awareness. The ashes produced from this particular Holika are deemed sacred and are utilized in the subsequent morning’s Bhasm Aarti, where they are applied as vibhuti to Lord Shiva in his Mahakal form.

Timing and Steps of the Ritual

The ritual is scheduled to commence on March 3, following the sandhya aarti, typically occurring between 7 and 8 PM IST. Priests will chant mantras and offer herbal gulal and shakkar mala before lighting a Holika composed of wood and cow dung within the temple grounds. Devotees gather to witness the flames, marking the official onset of Holi, which will be celebrated with colors on March 4.

Involvement of Devotees

Pilgrims arrive early for the aarti, applying vibhuti, singing devotional songs, and waiting for a glimpse of the deity. Many also offer gulal at the shrine, circulate around the temple, and collect ashes from the Holika to take home for personal worship. Some devotees choose to stay overnight to participate in the Bhasm Aarti the following day, which incorporates ashes from the fire. While the rituals at Mahakal do not dictate the official dates for Holi, they possess profound symbolic importance. Cities and towns across India observe their Holika Dahan following the fire at Mahakal, influenced by the belief that the festival should commence under the watchful eye of Lord Shiva. This tradition has established Ujjain as a significant destination for pilgrims during the Holi season.

A disturbing case of police brutality was reported from Madhya Pradesh after a Government Railway Police (GRP) head constable was filmed assaulting a man with disabilities at Nagda railway station in Ujjain district. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, coinciding ironically with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and widely circulated online, leading to strong public condemnation.

Viral Video Shows Repeated Assault

The video, recorded by a passenger travelling in an AC coach, shows the disabled man sleeping on Platform Number 1 with his bag beside him when Head Constable Mansingh, dressed in civilian clothes, approached him.

Moments later, the constable is seen slapping the man multiple times, then kicking him as he struggles to gather his belongings and leave the platform in tears. The footage spread rapidly across social media, drawing backlash from activists, passengers, and citizens nationwide.

Immediate Suspension After Backlash

Following the viral spread of the video, GRP Superintendent of Police Padmavilochan Shukla ordered the immediate suspension of Head Constable Mansingh within hours. According to the suspension order, the officer’s conduct brought disrepute to the Railway Police and violated service rules under the Madhya Pradesh Police Regulations. Mansingh was transferred to the Railway Police Line in Indore and barred from leaving headquarters without permission during his suspension.

Constable’s Defense Fails to Convince

Mansingh later claimed that the victim was intoxicated and using abusive language, an explanation that did little to justify the excessive force captured in the video. Authorities noted that regardless of the man’s condition, the assault represented a severe breach of discipline and misuse of authority.

Widespread Anger on a Sensitive Day

The timing of the incident deepened public outrage, as December 3 is observed globally to highlight the dignity and rights of persons with disabilities. Instead of support and protection, the visuals from Ujjain revealed a shocking case of mistreatment by a law enforcement officer.

The incident has renewed demands for stronger accountability mechanisms within the police force and better safeguards for vulnerable individuals.

In a bizarre twist from Badnagar, Ujjain district, a 45-year-old woman went missing for over a week, only to be found living with her lover, a 50-year-old man who turned out to be her would-be in-law. The woman’s son was engaged to the man’s daughter, but before the engagement could occur, the couple developed a close relationship and eloped.

Family Alarmed, Police Launch Investigation

The woman, a resident of Untwas village, was reported missing after her family failed to locate her for eight days. Following the missing person complaint, police traced her to Chikli village, where she was staying with the 50-year-old farmer. The man, recently widowed, lived with his two children and had no legal impediment to being with the woman.

“Our investigation revealed that she had gone away with a 50-year-old man. Further inquiry showed that the woman’s son and the man’s daughter were to be engaged, but before that could happen, the woman went away with him,” Patidar said.

Adults Choosing Love Over Tradition

Upon questioning, both the woman and the man admitted they had willingly left their families to be together. The police stated that since both parties were adults and it was a consensual matter, no legal action was taken. The woman reportedly refused to leave her lover, leaving both families shocked and embarrassed over the unexpected turn of events.

Town inspector Ashok Patidar confirmed the matter. “A missing report was filed eight days ago for a 45-year-old woman. Our investigation revealed that she had left her husband and two children, aged 18 and 20, and gone with a 50-year-old farmer whose daughter was to be engaged to her son. The engagement had not yet taken place. Both have expressed their desire to live together,” he said.

A fire-breathing performance turned into a horrifying tragedy late Wednesday night during the Dol Gyaras (Dol Yatra) procession in Ujjain, when two young performers sustained serious burn injuries after a stunt involving petrol went disastrously wrong.

The incident occurred when the religious procession, part of the Ganesh Visarjan celebrations, was moving through Tower Square, a key stop after starting from Teen Batti Square. As part of the festivities, multiple floats and tableaux were showcased, with live stunts and acts aiming to draw the attention of the crowd. Among them, two young men were seen performing a fire-breathing act while standing atop a moving vehicle.

According to eyewitnesses and video footage of the incident, one of the performers, identified as Yuvraj Marmat, filled his mouth with petrol in an attempt to spit fire and create a fireball. However, the flames suddenly flared back unexpectedly, engulfing both him and another youth standing close by.

Flames Spread Rapidly, Causing Panic

The fire spread rapidly, and within seconds, both young men were engulfed in flames. In a desperate attempt to save themselves, they leapt off the vehicle. Panic spread among the onlookers, who rushed to help, attempting to extinguish the fire by pouring water and using cloth. Despite their quick efforts, both victims sustained severe burns on various parts of their bodies, including the face, chest, and hands.

Medical Emergency and Critical Condition

The injured youths were promptly taken to Charak Hospital, where doctors reported that Yuvraj Marmat had sustained approximately 35-36% burns. Given the severity of his condition, he was later shifted to a private hospital for advanced medical treatment. The second youth, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, also suffered burns but is currently reported to be in stable condition.

Investigation and Public Outcry

Authorities have taken cognizance of the accident, and a police investigation is currently underway. Locals and officials alike have expressed concern over the use of hazardous materials like petrol in public stunts, especially during large gatherings.

Medical Officer Dr. Yash Goswami confirmed the injuries and emphasized the risks associated with such dangerous acts, particularly in crowded public settings. The incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols and the lack of regulation during cultural and religious events.

The tragic mishap has left the community in shock, with many calling for stricter oversight on live performances during processions to prevent similar accidents in the future.
