A father and his three children tragically lost their lives in a road accident that occurred in Hapur district, Uttar Pradesh. The incident happened on July 13 when a truck allegedly collided with the family’s motorcycle on the Delhi-Lucknow National Highway (NH-9). Authorities confirmed that the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the collision.

The family was travelling from Hasanpur village in Shahjahanpur district to Noida when the accident took place at approximately 3.30 pm near the Bachhlauta flyover. The impact was severe, throwing all five occupants from the motorcycle onto the road.

Details of the Accident Released

According to police reports, after the truck struck the motorcycle, the driver allegedly ran over two of the fallen children while attempting to escape the scene. Eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage have played a crucial role in the investigation, assisting authorities in identifying and locating the suspect.

Hapur City Circle Officer Anita Chauhan confirmed the identities of the victims, stating that Ashok, the father, was travelling with his wife Rinky and their three children, Anuj, Meenakshi, and Radhika. While Ashok and the children died instantly, Rinky suffered serious injuries and has been admitted to a medical college hospital in Meerut for treatment.

The police preliminary investigation indicates that two of the children might have survived if the truck driver had stopped following the collision, rather than fleeing the scene. Investigators believe the quick response to the incident could have positively impacted the children’s chances of survival.

Driver Located and Arrested

A team of police officials conducted extensive searches across multiple districts to locate the driver. They utilised the CCTV footage and the truck’s route to establish a lead, ultimately tracing and arresting the accused. The truck involved in the accident has also been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

Legal proceedings against the driver are now underway, following his apprehension. Investigators are continuing their work to gather all necessary evidence related to the incident. The community has been left in shock following this tragic event, which has drawn attention to road safety issues in the region.

As of the latest reports, Rinky remains under close medical care while the family mourns their tragic loss. The police investigation seeks to hold the responsible party accountable and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Mumbai, Maharashtra: One of the largest asset financing companies in India Shriram Transport Finance Company Limited (STFC) a part of the Shriram Group, has provided medical care to 93,000 members of the trucker community between April-September 2022 under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program Mobile Medical Unit (MMU).

MMU has been started for the truck community and has served around 9.85 lakh beneficiaries with 85% from the truckers communitytodate since its inception in 2017. The program is driven by the National Health Mission’s (NHM) vision of ensuring that all people in the country have access to quality and affordable health care and the need for Shriram to take care of those underserved in their ecosystem.

From April to September 2022, within the span of the first 6 months of the year over 2000 camps have been conducted and 93,000 truckers have benefited from this initiative. Treating over 500 truckers on an average daily through 14 MMU’s and 1 clinic. The medical camps have been conducted in the outskirts of 14cities namely,Bengaluru, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai, Guwahati, Hooghly, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Ranchi, Silchar, Vapi and Visakhapatnam.

The truckers’ community is largely cut off from the mainstream healthcare ecosystems due to its movable nature. Shriram Transport Finance’s MMUs & Clinic provides free health checks, laboratory tests, and medicines to them.

Most of the work in healthcare has been in the area of HIV, however,STFC provides basic, crucial and essential medical facilities for the transportation community which is inaccessible due to the mobile nature of the transport industry. The MMUs offer free primary healthcare services, including free screening, diagnosis, treatment, and referral for non-communicable, communicable diseases, and minor ailments. Awareness, education, and counselling programs are also carried out during these camps.

Speaking of the medical care programme, Umesh Revankar, VC & MD, Shriram Transport Finance said, “At STFC we believe in empowering the trucker community and the medical camps will help truckers to be more mindful of their health requirements and avail medical needs while on the go. The trucker community is the lifeline of the entire infrastructure and logistics ecosystem but in the rush to move/transport goods from one place to the other, their health suffers and with that, the future of their family also gets affected. We often talk about progress in economic activity without addressing the many challenges that the trucking community faces which is why we wanted to address some of their needs through the medical camps. We are committed to the upliftment of the trucker community”.

Onmove is a high-speed, long-distance trucking aggregator, capacitated through technology to provide quality service to time-sensitive cargo for sectors such as e-commerce, courier, pharma, and retail. The company has divulged details on the initiation of their novel project, Samarth. Officially initiated on Thursday, May 9th, Samarth will stand true to its phrasal meaning, which means “able”; these programs are devised to empower and embolden them and their families to be able to do well in life. It is a bouquet of benefits offered to the truck drivers that will not only be beneficial to them in the short term but will also cover them under its long-term umbrella scheme for overall progress and prosperity in life. The various programs under Samarth will provide the drivers and their families with a lifetime of welfare and will focus on skill up-gradation with child education, driver training, skill development of family members for higher earning, etc.

The project has already embarked on its journey unofficially earlier this month. The child education program forms have been distributed among the truck drivers, and they are still available for prospective claimants. This program aims to reward scholarships to students who have scored at least 60% in their last academic year and are currently in their senior secondary phase, i.e., in class 11 or 12. Even students who will be applying for graduation and post-graduation are eligible for the benefits of the scholarship.

Onmove’s empathy-driven project, Samarth, highlights the importance of life-altering opportunities for the heroes of our roadways. As a long-envisioned project, it puts into motion a strong compassionate relationship between Onmove and the truck driver community; it establishes an emboldening stance that has programs for overall progress and prosperity.

Quoted on the occasion of the initiation of project Samarth, Mr. Praveen Jain, Co-Founder of Onmove said, “Truck drivers are some of the hardest-working people in our society. They are often the sole breadwinners in their families. They spend days, months, and even years on the road, doing their best to elevate our country’s businesses and provide customer satisfaction in a limited time. Onmove believes that love, care, and respect are reciprocal. As the name suggests, Samarth will capacitate the truck driver communities and their families to gain momentum towards their goals and help them to gain proficiency, prosperity, and progression in life.”

“Samarth has been a long-term vision to elevate and ameliorate the lives of those who play a significant role in the upliftment of businesses around our country. Logistics has always been a very underrated component of the current commercial ecosystem. Truck drivers and their services are often taken for granted. At Onmove, we are the drivers of the wellness bandwagon that will give a bouquet of benefits to these selfless individuals and their families that will make them adept at life skills and propel them towards success, stability, and contentment.” said Pervinder Singh Chawla, Co-Founder of Onmove.

Transportation sector is the backbone of the growth and development in Indian Economy. Road transportation contributes to almost 90 per cent of country’s passenger traffic and 65 per cent of freight. Despite this, the sector runs completely unorganized. The truck drivers are majorly responsible for the freight transport in the country. However, their lifestyle and economic conditions are discouraging the youth today to take that up as their vocation.

Truck driving is considered to be a skilled employment in the western countries. The truck drivers there make decent amount annually to make a comfortable lifestyle and fend for their family. Average annual income of a truck driver in Canada is about CAD 50000 which converts to roughly INR 2.5 million. Average annual income for them in the USA is USD 40000 which again converts to roughly INR 2.6 million. In Europe, their average annual income is somewhere around 15000 Euros that translates to about INR 1.2 million. However, in India, average annual income of a truck driver is less than INR 1 lakh.

Truck drivers in India lead a lonely and unhealthy life despite staying at the bottom of the payment hierarchy. They have targets to be met which force them to work over time, and drive without adequate sleep and rest. Their lonely life on the road leads them to opt for unhealthy means of entertainment. This has caused truck drivers to be the most susceptible to HIV AIDS.

According to a survey conducted in 2006, about 40 per cent of truck drivers in India were susceptible to have AIDS. Ignorance and being away from home for longer duration were coined as its reasons. However, the problem is on such a massive scale that UN agencies have estimated that India would be the world center for AIDS. It is also estimated that about a million Indians will be suffering from illnesses related to AIDS and about 10 million Indians will be suffering from HIV.

This information is spine-chilling especially when our country’s economy is based on it. And this base needs to be made stronger. Truck drivers work hard and give up a lot to make their living. They deserve to have a better pay scale, hygienic food and resting options on the road, and better working hours. They also deserve to get holidays in order to be able to spend time at home.

Shift system and raise in pay along with a facility to access better rest stops on the road are few ways in which we can improve the lives of truck drivers. These need to be taken seriously in order to encourage more people to take up the vocation. It is not long otherwise, before the economy starts suffering because of lack of transport availability.

It is not just the necessity of the hour; it is also humane to treat the heroes of our economy with the respect and lifestyle that they deserve.

Thank you for reading the story until the very end. We appreciate the time you have given us. In addition, your thoughts and inputs will genuinely make a difference to us. Please do drop in a line and help us do better.

10 companies come together to celebrate ‘drivers’ day’ in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh

Its an issue which does not exist in the collective Indian consciousness. Nevertheless, it seems to be reaching to a point wherein it will start pinching all stakeholders in the economy very soon. Even as the production and consumption volume of goods in general mount up in the Indian market, the acute shortage of drivers to steer trucks on Indian highways – the most preferred freight transportation mode- is a problem which is simply growing in dimension. Facts speak for themselves. The country today has a cumulative trucking fleet capacity of over 3.3 million vehicles but according to transport industry insiders, over 20 percent of vehicles are lying idle because there aren’t enough drivers to ensure their commercial utilization.

The genesis of the problem obviously lies in the complete non-chalant attitude of all social as well as economic stakeholders (even those in the freight transportation business) towards the drivers’ fraternity. Being treated as trash is the common norm and on an overall basis, there is hardly any structural visible change to infuse a certain degree of respectability to the profession. Result is: the generational passage of baton (from father driver to his son – a strong trend in several pockets in the country in past) is increasingly becoming an elusive element.

The good news, however, is: there are preliminary signals to suggest that some leading firms especially those with direct linkage with freight transportation business seem to have understood that upliftment of drivers’ community is an issue which can’t be left unattended any more. This was well evident at Baddi, Himachal Pradesh on 17th September where nearly ten companies came together to celebrate Drivers’ Day. The event was organized by Delhi-based KRK Foundation – a registered trust which solely works for the welfare of drivers’ community and it was supported by such prestigious names as Indian Oil, Mahindra Trucks, Mahindra Logistics, Toll Global Logistics (an MNC with its headquarters in Australia), Siddhi Vinayak Logistics and VRL Logistics.

The day-long event at multiple locations in Baddi, an emerging industrial hub in North India, saw the participation of over 500 drivers representing different transportation companies. “ The entire idea on the part of supporting companies was to boost the morale of the drivers community. That they are integral part of their businesses was the central message conveyed to them,” says Ramesh Kumar, Chairman of KRK Foundation. The companies especially used the occasion to spread awareness on the critical issue of safety and security while underlining the point that a driver’s life is as much precious as anything else could be. “Helping them to improve their self-esteem was a core agenda for all supporting companies. Some of the speakers even stressed on the basic points like proper dressing and opting for some lucrative insurance offerings for their lives which are readily available in the market today,” Kumar adds.

The event had its light moment as well with Punjabi Drum beating, balloon bursting competition, etc. But the most unique feature of the proceeding probably was: the entire gathering observing a moment of silence paying tribute to the drivers who have died on Indian roads in last one year.
