Tripura Governor N. Indrasena Reddy announced the launch of the Northeast’s first Digital Forest Rights Act (FRA) Atlas during the inaugural ceremony of the “Janjatiya Garima Utsav 2026 – Birsa Lives in New Bharat Week”. He emphasised the government’s dedication to preserving tribal dignity through scientific planning, inclusive development, and advanced technological applications.

While addressing attendees, Governor Reddy highlighted that this initiative goes beyond a mere commemorative occasion. He underscored the continued relevance of Birsa Munda’s ideals regarding tribal rights, forests, and identity in the modern era.

Tripura has demonstrated significant progress in implementing the Forest Rights Act, with the recognition of numerous individual forest rights, which reflects the state’s proactive approach to tribal welfare.

Launch of Multiple Atlases and Digital Initiatives

In addition to the Digital FRA Atlas, the Governor inaugurated the Tribal Development Atlas and a booklet on the FRA published by the Tribal Welfare Department. These resources are designed to aid in monitoring and implementing forest rights effectively within tribal regions.

Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma reported that the department has been steadfast in its efforts to promote the welfare and social development of tribal communities, placing a strong emphasis on education and skill development, especially in remote areas. This aligns with the overall mission of enhancing the quality of life for tribal populations.

The initiative is part of a broader national push led by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs to digitise the FRA. The ministry has engaged in innovation-driven initiatives to develop an integrated digital platform that facilitates the implementation and monitoring of the Forest Rights Act, 2006. This includes the incorporation of geospatial technology to support decision-making processes.

National Integration and Community Engagement

As part of the digitisation efforts, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs introduced a problem statement at the Smart India Hackathon 2025, focusing on the development of an AI-powered FRA Atlas and a WebGIS-based Decision Support System. This initiative aims to enhance oversight of Individual Forest Rights, Community Rights, and Community Forest Resource rights.

Following field engagements in Nashik, Maharashtra, in January 2026, student teams from Pune, Kurnool, and Indore were dispatched to villages where FRA has been implemented. These teams collected crucial ground-level data that will be used to refine the national FRA Digital Platform.

The design and finalisation of this digital platform are being conducted at the National Tribal Research Institute in New Delhi, under the guidance of the Secretary of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. This collaborative approach aims to ensure that the platform meets the needs of the tribal communities it serves.

Prime Minister’s Engagement with Tribal Representatives

On a related note, Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a meeting with representatives of the Janjati Suraksha Manch in New Delhi on May 25. During the discussions, the Prime Minister addressed various issues surrounding the development and empowerment of tribal communities.

In a social media post following the meeting, PM Modi expressed his admiration for the dedication shown by the Forum’s representatives towards tribal communities. He affirmed the importance of engaging in meaningful dialogue regarding their challenges and aspirations.

This meeting underscores the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting tribal populations through collaborative dialogue and targeted initiatives, ensuring that their voices are heard in the development process.

In a notable anti-narcotics initiative in Gen A. Mungiakami, Tripura, the Assam Rifles collaborated with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) to confiscate a substantial quantity of Yaba tablets.

An official statement confirmed that approximately 4,50,000 Yaba tablets, valued at Rs 45 crore, were seized from a TATA truck registered as AS-01T-C7674. Law enforcement agencies apprehended one individual in connection with the seizure, who has since been transferred to the DRI for further investigation.

Previous Drug Trafficking Incident

Additionally, the Assam Rifles and DRI had previously engaged in another operation following credible information regarding drug trafficking in Khowai district. During this operation, on January 24, 2026, they apprehended an individual from Karimganj, Assam, who was in the process of transporting 1,60,000 Yaba tablets, worth Rs 16 crores, along National Highway 8. Authorities also seized the Tata truck used for the transport of these illicit drugs. Investigations concerning this case are ongoing.

Ongoing Efforts Against Drug Trafficking

The Assam Rifles continue to play a vital role in anti-narcotics operations throughout the region, frequently conducting missions aimed at disrupting drug trafficking networks. The recent seizure represents a critical accomplishment in their ongoing efforts to counter drug-related activities, especially in light of the forthcoming Republic Day celebrations, as noted in the official statement.

Related Operation in Mizoram

In a separate but related operation, the Assam Rifles acted on actionable intelligence to conduct a drug seizure near Ngur in the Champhai district of Mizoram. During this operation, an individual riding a Kenbo motorcycle was stopped for inspection.

The search resulted in the discovery of 2.2 kg of Methamphetamine tablets, a highly potent psychotropic substance with an estimated international market value of Rs 6.6 crore. The individual identified as Lalhmangaihzuala was taken into custody. The seized drugs and the arrested person have been handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department in Champhai for comprehensive investigation and appropriate legal proceedings.

Security has been heightened along sensitive stretches of the India–Bangladesh border in Tripura following intelligence inputs suggesting possible movement of cadres belonging to two Bangladesh-based armed groups — the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) and the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF), officials said on Saturday.

Acting on inputs received from the Border Security Force (BSF), Gomati district magistrate Rinku Lather imposed a night curfew in select border areas under the Karbook sub-division. The curfew has been enforced under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, and will remain in force from 6 pm to 6 am until February 28.

Officials said the move was aimed at preventing infiltration and maintaining public order in the border areas.

Apprehension of infiltration and criminal activity

According to the district administration, the decision was taken amid concerns that militants, along with Bangladesh nationals, Rohingyas and members of extremist outfits, could attempt stealthy infiltration across the international border. Such movements, officials warned, could be linked to criminal activities, smuggling and actions capable of disturbing peace in the region.

Under the curfew order, carrying firearms, lathis or any other weapons has been prohibited. However, personnel of the police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Border Security Force deployed on duty have been exempted from the restrictions. Government officials and security personnel have also been excluded from the curfew provisions.

In addition, residents living within 300 metres of the international border have been exempted from the restrictions, the notification clarified.

Strategic vulnerability of the border

Tripura shares an 856-km-long international border with Bangladesh and is surrounded by the neighbouring country on three sides, making it particularly vulnerable to cross-border crimes and illegal movement. Gomati and Dhalai districts share borders with the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) region of southeast Bangladesh, an area that has witnessed prolonged unrest.

The latest alert comes in the backdrop of an incident in June last year, when Tripura Police detained 13 members of the PCJSS, including two women, after they allegedly crossed into Indian territory from Bangladesh. Sources said the group had sustained injuries during armed clashes with a rival faction in Panchari in the CHT and entered India through Raishyabari in Dhalai district to seek medical treatment.

History of the PCJSS and CHT unrest

The PCJSS was earlier associated with the ‘Shanti Bahini’, an armed outfit that waged a prolonged insurgency demanding a sovereign Chittagong Hill Tracts for indigenous communities such as the Chakmas and Mogs. The conflict formally ended with the signing of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord between the PCJSS and the Bangladesh government on December 2, 1997.

However, tribal groups have repeatedly alleged that several key provisions of the accord remain unimplemented.

Reports of renewed tension in the CHT have surfaced following political developments in Bangladesh last year, with tribal organisations alleging attacks on indigenous communities by security forces and illegal settlers. Indian Chakma leaders have also renewed demands for the full implementation of the 1997 peace accord to ensure the protection of tribal populations in the region.
