The road, approximately 16 kilometres long and connecting Syaphrubesi to the Rasuwagadhi border crossing, was already undergoing upgrades under a Chinese-funded project worth NRs 6.5 billion when the floods obliterated large sections of the road. This destruction has had dire implications for trade, as it has severely damaged the border crossing, cutting off a significant link between Nepal and China.

Estimated Costs for Road Restoration

Preliminary findings from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority indicate that the cost of restoring the road between Rasuwagadhi and Galchhi is projected to be around NRs 55 billion, which is roughly equivalent to USD 364 million. The scale of destruction necessitates urgent attention and significant financial resources for rehabilitation efforts.

Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal confirmed to a local newspaper that China has provided a verbal commitment to assist with the rebuilding process; however, no formal written agreement has been established yet. He noted the importance of the road not only as a trade corridor between Nepal and China but also as a lifeline for numerous settlements located along its route.

In the interim, the Nepalese government is making preparations to implement a temporary track to ensure that access to Rasuwagadhi remains available. Lamsal emphasised the need for a more permanent, safer road solution in the long run but acknowledged that immediate measures must be taken to maintain connectivity for trade and local communities.

Future Prospects and Ongoing Discussions with China

Minister Lamsal also revealed that Nepal has submitted a proposal to China for additional support aimed at restoring the Rasuwagadhi border point. Dialogue regarding various alternative solutions is currently ongoing, indicating proactive efforts to secure long-term support from the Chinese authorities.

The Rasuwagadhi border point, situated around 152 kilometres north of Kathmandu, resumed operations earlier this year on January 1 after having faced significant disruptions due to a flood that occurred in July 2025. This prior disaster had destroyed the Miteri bridge and affected customs operations in the region.

Given these recent challenges, Rasuwagadhi has emerged as Nepal’s primary northern trade gateway with China, particularly after other routes such as the Araniko Highway and the Tatopani border crossing encountered repeated interruptions, especially following the 2015 earthquake. The August flood event completely devastated the border area, and customs officials have asserted that it will be unfeasible to reconstruct the customs office and other facilities in their previous locations. Therefore, temporary solutions are now a necessity while efforts continue to secure support from China for the lasting reconstruction of both road and border infrastructure.
