The Congress party and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) have exchanged pointed personal criticisms after Chief Minister Revanth Reddy marked the completion of 1,000 days in office in Telangana on September 1, 2026. At an event in Hyderabad, Reddy invoked the Telugu expression “Nandi versus pandi” to disparage his predecessor, K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR). His comments have now become a focal point for political tension between the two parties.

Reddy articulated a stark contrast when he stated, “What comparison is there between you and me? There is as much difference between us as there is between Nandi and pandi.” This phrase plays upon the cultural significance of “Nandi,” the sacred bull associated with Lord Shiva, as opposed to “pandi,” which means pig. Reddy escalated his attack by saying that no amount of disguise could transform a donkey into a racehorse, thereby intensifying his personal criticism.

BRS Responds Strongly to Attacks

In response to Reddy’s inflammatory remarks, BRS leader and former Finance Minister T Harish Rao condemned the personal attacks as a strategy aimed at diverting attention from the government’s performance. Rao asserted that resorting to personal insults not only diminishes Reddy’s stature but also reflects poorly on the office of the Chief Minister and the broader political culture in Telangana.

Rao urged Reddy to detail the achievements of his government throughout its 1,000 days in power rather than fixating on KCR. He expressed concern about the Congress party’s promises, particularly the fulfilment of their six guarantees, and accused the administration of not delivering on key election pledges.

“Mere abuses will not fill people’s stomachs, and criticism alone will not resolve systemic issues,” he stated, highlighting the need for tangible action instead of continuous verbal attacks. Rao went on to demand that Reddy retract his comments and extend an unconditional apology to KCR. This demand underscores the seriousness with which the BRS views the ongoing exchange of insults.

Implications for Political Landscape in Telangana

The exchange of remarks between the Congress and BRS indicates a heating political climate in Telangana as the state approaches future elections. Reddy’s escalating criticisms reflect frustration with KCR’s perceived absence from public life since the BRS lost power in the 2023 Assembly election.

Allegations of neglecting his duties as Leader of the Opposition have fuelled Reddy’s rhetoric. With both parties now entrenched in a cycle of personal attacks, the political discourse in the state is set to intensify. Critics of both leaders are closely monitoring how the confrontation evolves and what it means for state governance and electoral accountability.

The ongoing conflict could have repercussions for voters’ perceptions of both parties, influencing their choices in the next elections. As the political exchanges continue, the focus will likely shift toward the effectiveness and governance capabilities of Reddy’s administration and the actions of KCR moving forward.

The Chief Minister of Telangana, A. Revanth Reddy, has urged an immediate parliamentary debate regarding the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill, which aims to allocate 33 per cent of seats for women in legislative bodies. This call was made during an event commemorating the 35th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. CM Reddy articulated the importance of prioritising this discussion to advance women’s representation in politics.

Historical Context and Significance

During his address, the Chief Minister highlighted the significance of Rajiv Gandhi’s contribution to women’s political empowerment, referencing his initiative to establish a quota for women in local governing bodies. He expressed a vision in which the legislation for women’s reservation is inspired by the values espoused by Gandhi, reinforcing the message that women’s political participation is crucial for societal development.

In an effort to organise support for the bill, CM Reddy stated that the INDIA Alliance stands ready to lend its backing in Parliament. He emphasised the urgency of enacting this legislation, noting the critical role it plays in fostering equality and representation within the political landscape of India.

Further expressing his sentiments, CM Reddy cautioned against any attempts to politicise the matter, urging all political parties to unite for the cause of women’s reservation. He underscored that political empowerment for women should transcend partisan interests and that collective action is essential for achieving meaningful change.

Tributes to Rajiv Gandhi

In addition to CM Reddy’s remarks, several senior Congress leaders paid tribute to Rajiv Gandhi during the event. Among those present were prominent figures like Ashok Gehlot, P. Chidambaram, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, and Mukul Wasnik. Each leader reflected on Gandhi’s impactful legacy and transformative reforms during his tenure as Prime Minister.

In a separate post on X, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge referred to Rajiv Gandhi as a “remarkable son of India,” attributing numerous significant reforms to his leadership. These reforms include lowering the voting age to eighteen years and bolstering the frameworks of Panchayati Raj institutions, as well as fostering advancements in telecommunications and information technology.

Bhupinder Singh Hooda further characterised Gandhi as a “symbol of hope” for the youthful population of India. He articulated that the sacrifices made by the Gandhi family have significantly contributed to the nation’s development and progress, reiterating the enduring bond between the family and the Indian populace.

Personal Reflections on Rajiv Gandhi

On this day, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and son of Rajiv Gandhi, shared an emotional tribute to his father. He pledged to honour his father’s vision of a “skilled, prosperous, and strong India.” In his post on X, Rahul Gandhi expressed, “Papa, I will fully fulfil the responsibility of realising the dream that you envisioned,” highlighting the lasting influence of Gandhi’s teachings on his personal and political outlook.

Rajiv Gandhi, who became the youngest Prime Minister of India at the age of forty, took office in October 1984 following the assassination of Indira Gandhi. His life was tragically cut short when he was assassinated by an LTTE suicide bomber during an election rally in Sriperumbudur on May 21, 1991, leaving a lasting legacy in the annals of Indian politics.

Born on August 20, 1944, Rajiv Gandhi’s leadership is often associated with significant advancements in various sectors, including technology. His emphasis on liberal policies has had a profound effect on India’s development trajectory, reinforcing his position as a pivotal figure in the nation’s journey towards modernisation.

The Telangana State government has announced that its ministers will voluntarily reduce their salaries by 50 per cent. This decision aims to facilitate the clearance of longstanding pending dues owed to government employees. The announcement was made during a Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Thursday, April 24, 2026.

Government officials have indicated that this initiative forms part of a wider fiscal strategy that seeks to address the increasing financial liabilities of the state. Ensuring timely payment of pensions and other employee benefits is a key objective driving this decision.

Details of Pending Dues

The Cabinet has authorised a comprehensive 100-day action plan designed to facilitate the settlement of outstanding dues, which are estimated to total over Rs 14,000 crore. This figure includes retirement benefits and various arrears that have yet to be paid.

It is reported that Rs 6,200 crore is owed to currently employed personnel, while retired employees await the payment of arrears amounting to approximately Rs 8,000 crore. The government has acknowledged the difficulties faced by pensioners who have been adversely affected by delays in receiving their retirement benefits.

In light of financial constraints, the state administration is actively pursuing further resource mobilisation measures. One such initiative includes ministerial contributions to accelerate payments to retired employees. This strategy is expected to alleviate the financial burdens experienced by those awaiting their dues.

Commitment to Stakeholder Engagement

The Cabinet has also expressed concern regarding a significant amount of pending dues inherited from the previous administration. Notably, there were no such outstanding arrears at the time of Telangana’s formation in 2014. This situation underscores the extent of the fiscal liabilities that the current government is endeavouring to resolve.

This decision is being regarded as both a symbolic and practical measure reflecting the government’s accountability towards its employees. By initiating these pay cuts among ministers, the administration communicates its commitment to easing the financial strain on state resources while prioritising the welfare of its workforce.

Congress Social Media cell

Defence Lawyer
