On Tuesday evening, a tragic incident unfolded in Giridih district, Jharkhand, when five friends ventured to swim in the Medho River. The outing quickly turned into a disaster as three of the boys, identified as siblings aged thirteen and their twelve-year-old companion, drowned. The remaining two friends, who were not in the water, managed to escape and sought help, invoking a community response.

Details of the Drowning

According to reports, the group was enjoying their swim when they unexpectedly entered deeper waters. This area of the river is known for its strong current, and the three boys soon found themselves struggling to stay afloat. Despite the efforts of their two friends, who remained on the shoreline and attempted a rescue, they were unable to reach them in time. Realising the gravity of the situation, the two friends hurried back to their village to alert nearby residents.

Commencing a rescue operation, local villagers promptly responded to the alarm raised by the two boys. They rushed to the riverbank and quickly contacted authorities to report the incident. Their swift actions were crucial, as they helped mobilise emergency services to the scene.

A police team arrived shortly after the alarm was raised, and divers were subsequently summoned to initiate a search operation in the river. Additionally, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was informed to assist with the rescue efforts. The operation was extensive, given the urgent need to locate the missing children.

Recovery of the Bodies

Following an intensive search, the bodies of all three children were recovered later that night. The process of locating them was challenging due to the conditions of the river, yet the combined efforts of the police, divers, and NDRF personnel ultimately yielded results. The community was left in shock as the news of the tragic drowning spread, prompting deep sorrow among residents who knew the victims.

The incident has raised awareness about the dangers of swimming in unfamiliar waters, especially when strong currents are present. It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety precautions and vigilance while engaging in water-related activities. Parents and community leaders have since urged caution and increased supervision for children participating in such activities.

Officials are now reviewing safety measures regarding swimming in natural bodies of water to prevent future tragedies. Local authorities may also consider implementing awareness campaigns focusing on safe swimming practices to educate the community, especially the younger population, on the risks associated with swimming in rivers and lakes.

Aryan Nehra created history at the National Aquatics Championships on Saturday by becoming the first Indian swimmer to clock under eight minutes in the men’s 800m freestyle, securing gold and booking his place at next year’s Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

The Gujarat swimmer touched the wall in 7:59.36, bettering his own Best Indian Time of 8:00.76 set in 2019. The landmark performance also ensured qualification for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Asian Games in Japan after he comfortably surpassed the prescribed standards.

Nehra Continues Record-Breaking Run

Nehra’s latest achievement came after he had already produced another record performance earlier in the championships.

The swimmer had improved the Best Indian Time in the men’s 1500m freestyle and also attained the Commonwealth Games qualification mark in the event.

With his exploits in both distance events, Nehra has emerged as one of the standout performers of the championships.

He joins a growing list of Indian swimmers who have secured berths for major international competitions.

Olympian Sajan Prakash qualified for the Commonwealth Games in the men’s 200m butterfly, while Srihari Nataraj earned qualification for both the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games in the men’s 50m backstroke.

More Records Fall on Penultimate Day

The penultimate day of the National Aquatics Championships witnessed several notable performances as swimmers continued to rewrite records.

Rujula S improved her own Best Indian Time in the women’s 50m freestyle, clocking 26.23 seconds to lower the mark she had set last year.

B. Benedicton Rohit also enjoyed a memorable outing in the men’s 50m butterfly.

He first surpassed his previous national record of 24.11 seconds during the heats and then went even faster in the final.

Rohit clocked 23.63 seconds to win the gold medal and set a new national record in the event.

Difference Between National Records and Best Indian Times

According to Swimming Federation regulations, national records are recognised only when they are achieved at the National Aquatics Championships.

Timings registered by Indian swimmers at other domestic or international competitions are classified as Best Indian Times.

The championships have witnessed a series of such performances, underlining the improving standards of Indian swimming ahead of the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games next year.

A seven-year-old boy from Ranchi has made headlines by setting a record as the youngest individual to swim across the Palk Strait. Ishank Singh accomplished this feat on Friday, logging a time of 9 hours and 50 minutes. The strait spans 29 kilometres and is known for its challenging conditions, including strong currents and unpredictable weather patterns.

Singh began his swimming journey at 4 am, departing from Talaimannar in Sri Lanka, and reached Arichalmunai near Dhanushkodi in India at 1:50 pm. His determination and focus enabled him to navigate the hazards associated with the waterway. With supportive waves from the crowd and officials awaiting his arrival, Singh was greeted wholeheartedly on the shore of Rameswaram.

Significance of the Achievement

This remarkable achievement not only highlights the skills of young athletes but also serves as an inspiration to many. Ishank Singh has reportedly brought pride to his family, Jharkhand, and India as a whole. The swim across the Palk Strait not only requires physical prowess but also mental fortitude, underscoring Singh’s dedication to his training.

Previously, the record for the youngest swimmer to complete this distance was held by Jay Jashwanth from Tamil Nadu, who swam across the same stretch at the age of 10 years in 2019, finishing in 10 hours and 30 minutes. Singh’s accomplishment thus represents a significant milestone in the realm of swimming and athletic records.

The rigorous training regimen reportedly positioned Ishank well for this challenge, preparing him for the demanding nature of long-distance swimming. His ability to stay focused under pressure has been commended by supporters and fitness experts alike, highlighting the importance of mental preparation in sports.

Recognition from Officials and Supporters

The excitement surrounding Singh’s achievement was palpable as he arrived to a warm reception. Officials and supporters gathered to celebrate his success, acknowledging the dedication and discipline that accompanied the accomplishment. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren extended his congratulations, praising Singh as an “extraordinary talent.” Soren’s message on social media emphasised Ishank’s success as an exemplary display of determination and commitment.

Such recognition from governmental figures highlights the significance of sports in fostering unity and pride within communities. Singh’s story has captured public interest, leading to further discussions about the potential of young athletes in India. It has also brought attention to the importance of supporting youth in sports, providing a platform for future talent.

The phenomenon of young sports talents has been gaining traction in India, with more children participating in competitive sports and securing results on international stages. Singh’s record swim sets the bar higher for aspiring swimmers across the country, encouraging them to pursue their athletic ambitions.

Kamya Bhardwaj, a student of B.Sc. Zoology Honours at Dyal Singh College, Delhi University, has remarkably established a new record for the continuous round-trip swim across the Palk Strait. This achievement, announced on April 14, 2023, highlights her exceptional stamina and determination in overcoming physical challenges and mental hurdles throughout the arduous journey.

Bhardwaj completed the swim from Dhanushkodi to Talaimannar and back within a time of 18 hours and 15 minutes. This significant achievement surpassed the previous record of 19 hours and 20 minutes, which was held by Miss Sujitha DevVarman. The expedition was organised by the Open Water Swimming Academy (OWSA) based in Theni, Tamil Nadu.

Challenges Faced During the Swim

The Palk Strait is infamous for its unpredictable mariner conditions, which posed significant challenges for the swimmer. The open water marathon commenced at 1:30 PM on April 12, 2023, from Arichalmunai. During her swim, Bhardwaj encountered numerous difficulties, including high tides, strong opposing currents, and frequent stings from jellyfish, which testing her resilience and endurance.

Despite these adversities, Bhardwaj reached Oormala, Talaimannar in Sri Lanka at 10:35 PM. Showcasing remarkable determination, she immediately commenced the return journey, swimming through the night to navigate the treacherous waters back to the Indian coast. This portion of the journey required not just physical strength but also mental fortitude, as night swimming added an extra layer of difficulty.

She finally arrived back at the shores of Arichalmunai at 7:45 AM on April 13, 2023, where she was met with enthusiastic applause from a supportive crowd, including friends, family, and officials. This warm reception stood as a testament to her perseverance and tenacity throughout the challenge.

Record Verification and Future Aspirations

The record-breaking swim was closely monitored by official observers from the Swimming Federation of India (SFI), namely Dr. Vijayakumar and M. Jayakumar, who confirmed the timing and the conditions of the swim. Their oversight ensured that the achievement met formal standards for record-breaking swims, accentuating the credibility of Bhardwaj’s accomplishment.

This notable success adds to the growing prominence of open water swimming in India, with athletes increasingly pushing the boundaries of endurance sports. Bhardwaj’s triumph not only sets a new benchmark for future swimmers but also inspires both aspiring athletes and those wishing to pursue challenges that demand similar levels of commitment and dedication.

As Bhardwaj continues her academic journey, her accomplishments in open water swimming may encourage more young people to engage in sports that promote physical fitness and mental resilience. Her record stands as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through hard work and determination.

A chance selection during a sports class in 2022 has led Anjali Munda, now 15, to achieve remarkable success in swimming. Anjali Munda, who is from Gahiragadiya village in Odisha’s Jajpur district, about 100 kilometers from Bhubaneswar, chose swimming during a class where students were encouraged to pick different sports. At that time, she only had casual experience with swimming, having regarded it as an enjoyable activity rather than a competitive sport.

The youngest of four siblings, Anjali’s father works as a van driver at a local factory. She moved to the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) at the age of 10, where tribal children from all over the state receive free education and boarding. Initially inspired by her elder sister, who is an archer, Anjali ultimately decided to pursue swimming due to her comfort in water. Although building the confidence to compete took time, her journey gained momentum when she won a silver medal at a local club tournament a year later.

First Gold Medal at Khelo India Tribal Games

Anjali opened the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games by clinching the gold medal in the 200m freestyle event with a time of 2:39:02, marking a significant accomplishment as the first female gold medallist of the event. This victory prevented Karnataka, known as a swimming powerhouse, from winning all six gold medals available on the opening day. Anjali expressed gratitude towards her coaches, acknowledging their dedication during her training sessions for helping her gain the confidence to excel in her sport.

“The silver medal was my first, and it holds a special place in my heart. It encouraged me to believe in my abilities,” she stated. Anjali also credited various initiatives by the Union Sports Ministry, including the ASMITA League, which aims to inspire women in sports through action.

Recent Achievements Boost Confidence

“In 2024, I won two silver medals at the Khelo India ASMITA League in Sambalpur, and I was close to a podium finish in two other events. Those achievements further boosted my confidence and prepared me for larger competitions,” she noted. Anjali continued to show her prowess in the recent Khelo India ASMITA Swimming League (U-15 & U-18), held in Guwahati on March 21 and 22, where she added more silver medals to her collection.

Her impressive form led her to the Khelo India Tribal Games in Raipur, where she celebrated her first gold medal at the national level. Despite her triumphant performance, Anjali expressed a desire to improve her personal best time of 2:25 seconds, aiming for better results in upcoming events, including the women’s 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, and the 200m individual medley.

Heart, the most vital organ of our body which is crucial for our survival. To stay healthy and fit, it is very important to keep our heart healthy. The heart pumps blood across our body, which provides the body with the nutrients and oxygen necessary for functioning. The heart also receives deoxygenated blood carrying metabolic waste products from the body and pumps the same to the lungs for oxygenation and works to maintain the body’s blood pressure.

The World Health Organization (WHO) suggests avoiding 5 things to keep our heart healthy. These are unhealthy diet, drinking too much alcohol, tobacco, air pollution, sedentary lifestyle.

On World Heart Day 2023, The CSR Journal takes a look into the kinds of workout which should be done daily to keep our heart healthy. The theme for World Heart Day this year is ‘Use Heart, Know Heart’.

Walking

What is better than a walk in the open air under the sky early in the morning? Walking is the best exercise which is suitable for people of all age groups be it 8 or 80. Walking will not only help you burn calories but is also the ideal workout for a healthy heart.

Talking about health benefits, walking leads to increased cardiovascular (heart) and pulmonary (lung) fitness, walking reduces risk of heart disease and stroke, walking helps to manage high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness, as well as diabetes. Apart from the above, walking also strengthens our bones and improves body balance. Doctors recommend brisk walking at least for 20-40 minutes everyday. A recent study claims that walking between 6,000 and 9,000 steps daily can substantially reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases for older adults.

Swimming

Swimming is one of the best forms of aerobic exercises which help to keep our heart healthy. Swimming can be great for the heart, lungs, blood vessels, and muscles. Swimming enhances the heart’s efficiency to pump blood, supply it to the body and use oxygen more efficiently. Swimming also helps to keep our blood pressure in control. Swimming also helps us to breathe faster and longer, improves heart rate and enhances efficiency of the lungs.

At least 30 minutes of swimming is recommended daily, which will not only keep your heart healthy but also increase your body’s muscle strength& flexibility, boost blood circulation & metabolism, as well as burn calories, thus helping you to stay in shape. Swimming also has amazing benefits for mental health, as it helps one to relax and calm the mind, thus helping to flight stress and anxiety.

Cycling

If there is a relatively empty lane near your home, or a park, just get a bicycle and start pedalling! Yes, it is advisable to avoid cycling in congested roads and polluted areas. Cycling has immense benefits not only for our heart but for our overall health.

Cycling not only strengthens our heart muscles, but also lowers resting pulse and reduces blood fat levels. Research has also associated cycling with improved lung function. Regular cycling stimulates and improves our heart, lungs and blood circulation, thus reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, high blood pressure and heart attack. Cycling also helps to lose weight and stay fit. Apart from cardiovascular fitness, cycling also improves joint health, and muscle strength.

India is infamously called the ‘diabetes capital of the world’. A study by the Indian Council of Medical Research has revealed that India has 101 million diabetics, while there are at least 136 million pre-diabetic individuals who need prevention. The rate of type 2 diabetes is increasing and is a serious public health concern not only in India but also across the globe. Lack of physical activity is a major reason leading to this condition. A research conducted in Finland revealed that people who cycled for more than 30 minutes every day had a 40 per cent lower risk of developing diabetes.

Dancing/Zumba

Dancing is not only great for physical fitness and mental health but also boosts cardiovascular health. Any form of dancing enhances coordination between different parts of our body, boosts creativity, flexibility and is a great way to stay active and fit. Research has also associated dancing with reduced risk of dementia.

Zumba is increasingly becoming popular across the world as an everyday workout to enhance fitness and burn calories. Zumba enhances mind-body coordination, tones our body by working on the muscles and can be great for weight loss. Talking about heart health, Zumba helps to increase heart rate, which in turn aids our body to move oxygen and blood to the muscles more efficiently, thus helping our body to burn more calories and reduce cholesterol. Zumba is amazing for mental health also as it helps to fight stress.

Weight training/Resistance training

Resistance training (also called strength training or weight training) refers to the use of resistance to muscular contraction to build strength, anaerobic endurance and size of skeletal muscles. Building different muscles in our body supports our heart. Training with weights helps us to build muscle mass and burn fat. Apart from working out with free weights like Medicine balls or sand bags, hand weights, dumbbells or barbells at the gym, the best form of weight training happens with workouts like push-ups, squats, chin-ups and pull-ups which are done using our own body weight. These help in building muscle and contribute to our bone and heart health.

Research has shown that a combination of aerobic exercise and resistance work may help raise HDL (good) cholesterol and lower LDL (bad) cholesterol in our body. At least two alternate days per week of resistance training is recommended for overall fitness of the body.

Resistance training has amazing health benefits. It improves bone density, muscle strength and tone, increases flexibility and balance, boosts stamina, and aids prevention or control of chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, back pain, depression and obesity. It also helps to improve our sleep and fight insomnia.

Healthy lifestyle for a healthy heart

However, workout alone will not be able to boost heart health if a healthy lifestyle overall is not maintained. These include eating healthy, staying physically active at least 30-60 minutes daily, avoiding obesity, getting adequate sleep, avoiding smoking or other forms of tobacco, avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, maintaining healthy levels of blood pressure and cholesterol and fighting stress.

A diet comprising seasonal fruits, green vegetables, beans & legumes, whole grains, low-fat dairy foods and cooked in less oil or other fat is very healthy for the heart. Excess salt, sugar or sweetened beverage, refined carbohydrates, alcohol, processed meats, saturated fat, which is found in red meat, full-fat dairy products, palm oil and coconut oil and trans-fat, should be minimal in our daily diet.

It is recommended to avoid eating a heavy meal at dinner time in order to boost heart health. Also, it is advisable to walk or stroll after dinner and go to bed at least 2-3 hours after dinner as sleeping soon after dinner has been associated with increased risk of stroke.
