The unrest at Negombo prison in Sri Lanka has led to a rising death toll, now confirmed at 26, according to officials. This violence erupted on July 5, 2026, when clashes broke out between two rival groups of inmates. The situation escalated further on Monday when inmates seized weapons from prison guards, intensifying the chaos.

Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara stated that the unrest had resulted in significant injuries, with over 100 individuals reportedly hurt during the confrontations. The prison was accommodating approximately 1,800 inmates at the time of the violence, which has raised concerns regarding overcrowding and management within the facility.

Minister Nanayakkara expressed his commitment to addressing the issue by taking responsibility for the situation, given its occurrence within an institution under his jurisdiction. He informed the media that action must be taken to prevent similar incidents from recurring.

Details of the Clashes

Preliminary reports suggest that the unrest emerged from tensions between a faction allegedly involved in drug trafficking and another faction opposing such activities within the prison. This rivalry reportedly sparked the initial skirmishes leading to the violent outbreak.

Among the deceased are seven prison officials alongside nineteen inmates. Following the turmoil, authorities have intensified security measures, deploying the Police Special Task Force and riot control units to restore order within the facility. These measures have been implemented to ensure the safety of both inmates and prison staff.

In an effort to manage the situation, three inmates were transferred to the Pallansena Prison Camp on July 6. This action forms part of broader attempts by the Sri Lankan government to stabilise the environment inside the overcrowded prison.

Investigations Underway

In light of the tragic events, a special investigation is being conducted by the Prisons Department. AC Gajanayake, the Media Spokesman for the Department, stated that a dedicated team has been established to investigate the causes and circumstances surrounding the unrest. Their inquiry aims to understand what led to this alarming situation and how it can be prevented in the future.

A separate police investigation is also ongoing, with a magisterial inquiry initiated on Sunday to further assess the incidents that took place. These investigations underscore the urgency and seriousness with which the government is addressing the unrest and its implications.

While the situation at the Negombo prison is reported to be under control now, officials have recognised the need for significant alterations in management practices and policies to better serve the incarcerated population. The unrest highlights critical issues related to prison management and the need for reforms to ensure the safety of all involved.

The violent unrest at Negombo Prison in Sri Lanka’s western coastal town has led to a significant increase in the death toll, now reported at 25, according to authorities on Monday. This incident began on Sunday, stemming from clashes between rival inmate factions within the overcrowded facility. Fresh disturbances were reported on Monday after inmates allegedly took control of firearms stored in the prison.

Initial reports indicated that the unrest resulted in the deaths of 19 individuals, with over 100 others injured during the clashes and subsequent rioting. In response to the escalating violence, security measures have been greatly intensified. The Police Special Task Force alongside riot control units was deployed to restore order in the prison environment.

Nature Of The Violence

Preliminary investigations suggest that the violent outbreak involved two rival groups of inmates. One faction is suspected of supporting drug trafficking operations within the prison, while the opposing group reportedly advocated against such illegal activities. The tensions between these factions may have acted as a catalyst for the unrest. To mitigate further violence, law enforcement has taken measures to transfer three inmates to the Pallansena Prison Camp as part of the containment strategy.

According to AC Gajanayake, the Media Spokesman for the Prisons Department, a special investigation has been initiated regarding the incident. Gajanayake confirmed that a dedicated investigative team has been assembled following directives from the Commissioner General of Prisons to probe into the underlying causes and events surrounding the unrest. Concurrently, a separate police investigation is also under way to ascertain the facts of the situation.

In light of these developments, Minister of Justice Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara has requested a comprehensive report detailing the circumstances involving the clashes at Negombo Prison. A magisterial inquiry was initiated on Sunday, and authorities are persistently working to manage the aftermath of the unrest while determining effective measures to prevent future occurrences.

Authorities’ Response

Authoritative figures are currently focused on restoring order within the prison facilities, which have faced increasing scrutiny amid concerns over overcrowding and management issues. The measures introduced reflect an urgent response to the critical situation that unfolded over the weekend. There is a clear emphasis on safety not only for the inmates but also for prison staff and the surrounding community.

As investigations progress, there will likely be calls for reforms within the prison system to better address the underlying issues that prompted such violence. The heightened attention on Negombo Prison may lead to broader discussions about prison reform in Sri Lanka, focusing on overcrowding, inmate rights, and effective rehabilitation programmes to prevent future incidents.

Overall, the developments at Negombo Prison have raised serious concerns about the management and operational controls in place within such institutions. The ongoing investigations aim to provide clarity on the mismanagement aspects that might have contributed to the recent violence, which has tragically highlighted the challenges faced by the Sri Lankan correctional system.

Zydus Lifesciences and Sunshine Healthcare Lanka have formed a joint venture aimed at creating a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Sri Lanka, with an investment of $20 million. This initiative marks an important milestone in enhancing the country’s capacity for local drug production.

The foundational work for this new plant commenced on June 26, with the ceremony taking place in the Board of Investment (BOI) Zone located in Horana. The facility is planned to cover an area of approximately four acres and will focus primarily on producing pharmaceutical products for the local retail market in Sri Lanka.

This project is part of Sri Lanka’s ongoing efforts to encourage domestic manufacturing in essential sectors, aiming to reduce dependence on imports and improve access to high-quality healthcare products.

Strategic Partnership Benefits

The collaboration between Zydus and Sunshine Healthcare combines Zydus Lifesciences’ proficiency in pharmaceutical manufacturing with Sunshine Healthcare Lankan’s well-established distribution network. This partnership aims to enhance local production capabilities and facilitate the transfer of technology, thereby bolstering the pharmaceutical industry within Sri Lanka.

In addition to increasing the production of domestic medicines, the new facility is expected to create job opportunities for the local workforce, contributing positively to the long-term growth of Sri Lanka’s healthcare sector. The establishment of this plant demonstrates a commitment from both companies to improve healthcare accessibility while also supporting industrial development through advanced pharmaceutical processes.

This joint venture is in alignment with Sri Lanka’s broader initiatives to boost healthcare security by expanding domestic production capabilities. By reducing reliance on imported medicines, the country aims to enhance its pharmaceutical landscape.

Future Implications for Healthcare in Sri Lanka

The facility’s establishment is not merely a financial investment but a strategic move to uplift the standards of healthcare in Sri Lanka. By fostering local production, the joint venture seeks to reinforce the self-sufficiency of the country’s healthcare system, allowing it to respond more effectively to the needs of its citizens.

The partners have also expressed their dedication to ensuring that the new plant adheres to international quality standards. This commitment is expected to place the facility among the leaders in pharmaceutical manufacturing within the region, catering not just to local but potentially export markets in the future.

Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage made a significant mark in the world of javelin on June 5, 2026, by achieving a throw of 92.62 metres during the Rome Diamond League. This outstanding performance has positioned the 23-year-old Sri Lankan as only the fourth Asian athlete to surpass the prestigious 90m threshold in men’s javelin. Joining him in this elite group are Cheng Chao-Tsun from Chinese Taipei, Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan, and India’s Neeraj Chopra.

Pathirage’s throw stands as the 21st best overall in the history of the event, a record that is predominantly led by Jan Zelezny, who set an impressive 98.48m distance in 1996. This latest achievement not only established a new national record for Sri Lanka but also marked a world-leading throw for 2026, alongside setting a meet record at the prestigious Diamond League event.

His performance at the event was especially noteworthy as he faced a highly competitive field, which notably did not include fellow high-profile competitors Arshad Nadeem and Neeraj Chopra. Pathirage made his mark by posting the meet record during his second attempt. Following that, however, he experienced four fouls, yet none of the other nine athletes could surpass a distance of 85m. Former world champion Anderson Peters placed second with a throw of 83.89m.

Background and Path to Success

Despite his evident talent in throwing, Rumesh Pathirage initially gravitated towards cricket, much like many Sri Lankan youths. He was already displaying remarkable potential as a fast bowler, clocking speeds of 134 kilometres per hour at the under-18 level. In a nationwide talent search event identified as a breeding ground for international talent, he finished in second for speed in his category, reflecting his competitive edge. He had an impressive performance for St Peter’s College in Colombo, where he took five wickets while also scoring a half-century in the same match.

He eventually decided to take a different path, expressing that cricket was marred by political involvement and intense competition, which made it challenging to gain national recognition. In contrast, Pathirage felt that talent alone in javelin would earn him the recognition he sought. Beginning his javelin journey in 2017 under the guidance of his father, a discus and shot-put athlete, he recorded an initial throw of 30m. Remarkably, within just two months, he improved to 63m.

His progress continued steadily; he recorded a throw of 85.45m at the Asian Throwing Championships in Mokpo in 2024. In early 2025, he secured third place at the Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru with a distance of 84.34m. A month later, he shattered the Sri Lankan national record with a throw of 86.50m in Bhubaneswar, qualifying him directly for the World Championships held in Tokyo, where he achieved a commendable sixth position with 84.38m, finishing ahead of an injured Neeraj Chopra.

Support from Rivals and Future Aspirations

Neeraj Chopra has proven to be more than just a competitor for Pathirage; he has also been a mentor. Chopra invited Pathirage to Bengaluru, encouraging him to push his limits in the sport. Notably, he provided guidance on public speaking, advising him to practice English to prepare for future podium appearances. This mentorship has impacted Pathirage positively as he navigates his burgeoning athletic career.

As he continues to gain recognition and accolades, Rumesh Pathirage’s recent accomplishment in Rome has written a significant chapter in Asian javelin history. His trajectory in javelin is marked by rapid progress and remarkable milestones, positioning him as a formidable contender in the international arena.

With ambitions to further improve and achieve new records, Rumesh Pathirage is now focused on his future endeavours, building on the solid foundation of talent and hard work he has established over the past several years.

The free ETA provision came into effect on May 25, 2026, allowing Indian nationals to obtain a tourist ETA valid for 30 days. The arrangement includes a double-entry facility from the date of the first entry, making it easier for those wishing to explore more of the country during their visit. The decision is part of a broader strategy to enhance tourism between Sri Lanka and its key partners.

To confirm eligibility under the new policy, all foreign nationals must still secure prior Electronic Travel Authorisation, as outlined by the official Sri Lankan ETA portal. The procedure has been designed to be straightforward, albeit requiring that travellers engage with the official website for applications.

Countries Eligible for Free Sri Lanka ETA

The free ETA provision is not exclusive to India, as it extends to a total of 40 countries. This list includes high-profile nations such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and France, among others. Other countries included in the scheme are China, Germany, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. This wide-ranging eligibility indicates Sri Lanka’s intent to appeal to a broader audience of international tourists.

In addition to the nations included in the new ETA programme, Sri Lanka continues to uphold reciprocal travel agreements with Maldives, Seychelles, and Singapore. The policy applies to various types of passports, including diplomatic, official, service, and ordinary passports, illustrating a comprehensive approach to facilitating travel.

This initiative is likely to foster increased tourism from these countries, as the removal of visa fees and complicated procedures makes travel more appealing and accessible. The simplification of entry norms is expected to attract many short-term visitors seeking a convenient getaway.

Implications for Indian Travellers

India remains the largest source market for inbound tourism in Sri Lanka, and the latest changes in visa regulations are anticipated to boost tourist numbers significantly. With shorter travel times and economic accommodation options available, travellers from India are increasingly considering Sri Lanka as a viable destination for quick international holidays.

The new visa exemption may assist in reducing both time and financial burdens, allowing Indian tourists to enjoy hassle-free access to a popular holiday spot. It is advisable for travellers to apply for the ETA exclusively through the official website, thereby ensuring a secure and efficient process.

This move is likely to further strengthen the cordial ties between India and Sri Lanka, fostering cultural exchange and enhanced travel experiences. With these advantages, Sri Lanka is poised to be a key destination for those seeking a memorable beach holiday, combining relaxation with adventure at minimal cost.

The mother of seven-year-old Ishank Singh, who made history by swimming across the Palk Strait, stated on Saturday that his achievement was the result of extensive training and dedication. Ishank completed the 29-kilometre swim on April 30, starting from Talaimannar in Sri Lanka and reaching Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu in a duration of 9 hours and 50 minutes.

Manisha Singh explained that her son began swimming at the age of three and developed a profound interest in long-distance swimming. “He originally trained in pools around Ranchi, but for the past six months, he specifically trained in open water at Dhurwa Dam to prepare for this challenging swim,” she informed the news agency PTI.

Manisha emphasised that Ishank devoted seven to eight hours daily to training, stating, “That dedication made this achievement possible.” She manages a private hospital in Ranchi and has been a significant supporter of her son’s passion for swimming.

Ishank Expresses Ambitions Beyond the Swim

Ishank returned to Ranchi on Friday evening and expressed his excitement about completing the swim, indicating that he has even greater aspirations. “I want to keep improving and achieve more. My dream is to complete a two-way swim across the Palk Strait,” he mentioned.

He studies in Class 3 at Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamli, a school known for being the alma mater of noted cricketer MS Dhoni. Ishank has already been recognised with the titles of ‘Youngest and Fastest Palk Strait Swimmer’ by the Universal Records Forum and ‘2026 OWSAT World Record’ by the Open Water Swimming Academy in Theni.

Coaches Aman Kumar Jaiswal and Bajrang Kumar noted Ishank’s exceptional stamina from a young age. “We first noticed his unusual endurance during a summer camp. With support from his parents, we began to train him for this goal, and his success speaks for itself,” Jaiswal remarked. He also mentioned that the previous record was held by Tamil Nadu’s Jay Jaswanth.

Community and Officials Praise the Achievement

The principal of Ishank’s school, BN Jha, commended the young swimmer’s courage and determination, stating, “Ishank’s remarkable accomplishment at such a young age is truly inspiring. He has brought pride not just to his school, but also to the entire state and nation.” Such endorsements from educational and community leaders further underscore the impact of his achievement.

The pride felt by both his family and the community remains evident, as Ishank has become a beacon of inspiration for many aspiring athletes. His focus on continued improvement and ambition towards future goals indicates a promising path ahead as he seeks to challenge existing records further.

The recent bilateral diving exercise, IN-SLN DIVEX 2026, marked an important reaffirmation of the maritime relationship between India and Sri Lanka. Conducted in Colombo from April 21 to 28, the fourth edition of this exercise involved significant operational collaboration between the two navies. The participation of the Indian Navy’s Diving Support and Submarine Rescue Vessel, INS Nireekshak, alongside diving teams from the Sri Lankan Navy, emphasised their commitment to enhancing joint capabilities and professional synergy.

According to statements from the Indian Navy, this specialised engagement focused on advanced underwater operations designed to promote interoperability between the two nations. The exercise comprised a series of complex deep-sea diving drills, including mixed gas diving evolutions that allowed divers to showcase their skills in both harbour and open-sea environments.

An essential aspect of the exercise included deep-sea dives off the coast of Colombo, specifically around World War-era wrecks, such as the SS Worcester and SS Perseus. With successful dives executed at depths exceeding 55 metres, both navies aimed to enhance their capabilities in underwater search, rescue, and salvage missions.

High-Profile Visits and Activities

In addition to operational training, the exercise included various joint activities aimed at fostering camaraderie. A notable initiative was a beach clean-up drive organised at Galle Face, complemented by friendly sports matches and yoga sessions, which further strengthened interpersonal relationships between the personnel of both navies.

The Commanding Officer of INS Nireekshak also commemorated the contributions of Indian soldiers who served in Sri Lanka by laying a wreath at the IPKF Memorial. This gesture served to honour the sacrifices made during the Indian Peace Keeping Force operations and highlighted the historical ties between the two nations.

Humanitarian Initiatives and Future Prospects

In a further demonstration of cooperative efforts, two BHISM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hita and Maitri) cubes were delivered as part of India’s Aarogya Maitri initiative. This exchange aims to bolster disaster response and enhance medical preparedness within Sri Lanka, reflecting India’s commitment to humanitarian assistance.

Upon the conclusion of IN-SLN DIVEX 2026, INS Nireekshak received a ceremonial send-off, symbolising the strong bonds and continuing maritime partnership between India and Sri Lanka. This exercise is considered a crucial step towards ongoing bilateral collaboration, aligned with the MAHASAGAR vision promoting security and growth across the regions.

The successful execution of this exercise not only demonstrates the operational readiness of both navies but also reinforces their shared commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Indian Ocean Region. As a result, both nations are likely to build on this engagement for future collaborative efforts, enhancing security frameworks in the maritime domain.

On April 7, thirty Indian fishermen successfully returned to their homeland after being detained in Sri Lanka. The group included 21 individuals from Ramanathapuram and 9 from Karaikal. These fishermen, who are residents of Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal, embarked on their fishing expedition on February 15 using two boats. They were reported to have crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line, leading to their apprehension by the Sri Lankan Navy, which seized their vessels and transported them to Sri Lanka.

Legal Proceedings and Diplomatic Efforts

The fishermen were subsequently presented in a court in Mallakam, where they were placed in custody at a prison in Jaffna. In the aftermath of their detention, both the Central and State governments initiated diplomatic endeavors to facilitate their release. In addition, Charles Martin, a leader from Puducherry’s LJK, engaged legal assistance to work towards securing their freedom. On March 31, the Sri Lankan authorities released all thirty fishermen as a result of these concerted efforts.

Returning Home

After their release, the fishermen were handed over to officials from the Indian High Commission in Colombo. Following medical check-ups and the acquisition of emergency travel documents, they boarded a flight from Colombo and arrived at Chennai International Airport. Upon arrival, they completed necessary customs and immigration procedures. Subsequently, officials from the Fisheries Department provided transport to escort them back to their respective hometowns.

Ongoing Challenges for Fishermen

In light of this incident, Sri Lankan MP Harsha de Silva commented on the recurring issue of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan waters. He noted that this problem is deeply rooted, as fishing is a primary livelihood for many on both sides of the maritime boundary. De Silva highlighted that the complexities of the situation cannot be simplified, given the reliance of numerous small fishermen on fishing for their survival. He stated that observations made through satellite imagery indicate that Indian trawlers frequently operate in large numbers, adding another layer of difficulty to the issue.

Legal and Economic Dimensions

De Silva characterized the problem as more legally oriented than purely political. He acknowledged that multiple diplomatic channels have been engaged in addressing the issue, particularly concerning practices such as bottom trawling and its implications for marine ecosystems. He emphasized that a resolution to the challenges faced by fishermen would likely require an economic approach rather than a strictly legal one. The recurring arrests of Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan authorities continue to pose a significant concern for the fishing communities in Tamil Nadu, affecting their livelihoods and prompting ongoing discussions between the two nations.

The Sri Lankan government has announced a fuel price hike of approximately 25 percent, marking the second increase within a week. This decision is influenced by ongoing tensions in the West Asia region, which have significantly impacted global oil markets. The unrest follows joint military actions involving the United States and Israel against Iran, alongside retaliatory measures taken by Iran affecting the entirety of the Gulf area. This situation has led to the closure of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, which is critical for the global energy supply chain.

Specific Increases in Fuel Costs

Effective from midnight, the new fuel prices reflect drastic increases across various products. The price for auto diesel has surged by 26.1 percent, rising from 303 Sri Lankan rupees (LKR) to 382 LKR. Super diesel has increased by 25.5 percent, moving from 353 LKR to 443 LKR, while petrol pricing has also seen substantial increases; 92 octane petrol is now priced at 398 LKR, a 25.6 percent rise from 317 LKR, and 95 octane petrol has jumped by 24.7 percent to 455 LKR, up from 365 LKR. Kerosene has observed the most substantial increase, going up by 30.8 percent from 195 LKR to 255 LKR. This marks the latest of three price hikes since March 1.

Impact on Public Transport

The substantial rise in fuel prices has prompted warnings from non-state bus operators about significant disruptions in transportation services. Many operators have indicated that up to 90 percent of their buses may be off the roads due to these cost hikes. Gamunu Wijeratne, head of the private bus owners’ association, highlighted the severity of the situation, stating that without an appropriate revision of fare prices—which would need to be at least 15 percent—many bus services would become economically unviable. In response to these concerns, the Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association has announced plans for a nationwide strike unless a formal fare revision is approved.

Potential Changes in Bus Fares

The National Transport Commission (NTC) has acknowledged that the latest increase in diesel prices would lead to a necessary adjustment of bus fares, suggesting a rise of more than 10 percent under their existing fare formula. NTC Director General Nilan Miranda mentioned that Cabinet approval for this fare adjustment is expected shortly. In Sri Lanka’s public transport sector, private operators hold a dominant market share of approximately 65-75 percent, while state-operated services account for only 25-35 percent of the fleet.

Challenges Faced by Taxi Operators

Operators of three-wheeled taxis, a popular mode of transport in Sri Lanka, have expressed concerns regarding the rising petrol costs, which have now reached nearly 400 LKR per litre. One operator questioned the viability of their business at these price levels, indicating a potential decline in demand for rides. The fuel retail market is comprised of various entities, including Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC), Lanka IOC, Sinopec, and United Petroleum, all of which have revised prices in response to changes made by CPC.

Government’s Financial Burden

According to the opposition, the government is accruing significant tax revenues from fuel sales, earning LKR 119 for each litre of petrol and LKR 93 for diesel. Calls for a reduction or elimination of these taxes have been made to ease the financial burden on consumers. Additionally, analysts have projected that the latest round of price increases could result in an inflation rise ranging between 5 to 8 percent. Government spokesperson Nalinda Jayatissa noted that despite these increases, the government still incurs monthly costs of approximately LKR 20 billion in fuel subsidies, emphasizing the urgent need for revised pricing structures to mitigate further financial strain.
