Shri Ratan Tata passed away on October 9, 2024, at the age of 86. He signed the will on February 23, 2022, keeping philanthropy as a central focus while still providing for family, friends, staff, and even his beloved pets.

A Fortune Dedicated to Social Good

True to his lifelong commitment to giving back to society, Tata directed the lion’s share of his wealth—including his valuable Tata Sons shares—to the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation and the Ratan Tata Endowment Trust. These charitable organisations will continue his legacy of supporting education, healthcare, rural development, and innovation across India.

His final will included four codicils—legal amendments—with the last one ensuring that any unallocated shares, investments, or assets would likewise flow to these philanthropic trusts.

This final act of generosity aligns perfectly with Tata’s established pattern of philanthropy. Under his leadership, the Tata Trusts contributed significantly to social causes, including a remarkable Rs 1,500 crore pledge during the COVID-19 pandemic. The trusts he led were recognised in a 2021 report as the world’s top philanthropic foundation, having donated more than $102.4 billion.

As one of India’s most respected industrialists, Tata once articulated his philosophy that businesses should create wealth for the nation and foster societal progress. In a 1996 interview, he emphasised that philanthropy must “strengthen self-help” rather than merely distributing charity—a principle evident in the strategic focus of his giving.

Personal Connections Not Forgotten

While charity dominates his will, Tata also ensured that those close to him were cared for. His half-sisters Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy will receive one-third of his personal assets valued at approximately Rs 800 crore, including bank fixed deposits, financial instruments, watches, and paintings. Another third goes to Mohini M Dutta, a former Tata Group employee who was particularly close to him.

His 82-year-old brother Jimmy Naval Tata inherits a share of Tata’s Juhu bungalow along with silver articles and jewellery, while close friend Mehli Mistry receives his Alibaug property and three guns, including a .25 bore pistol. Tata noted in his will that Mistry was “instrumental in making this property possible” and hoped it would evoke memories of their shared experiences.

In a touching gesture that highlights his well-known love for animals, Tata established a Rs 12 lakh fund to ensure his pets receive Rs 30,000 quarterly for their ongoing care. He also demonstrated personal generosity by waiving loans previously given to his executive assistant Shantanu Naidu and neighbour Jake Malite.

The executors of the will—lawyer Darius Kambatta, Mehli Mistry, and the Jejeebhoy sisters—have filed for probate in the Bombay High Court, a process that may take up to six months before any wealth distribution begins. The document includes a no-contest provision, stipulating that anyone challenging the will forfeits all benefits.

In FY 2022-23, Thane received CSR funds worth Rs 196.95 Cr. from 664 companies. The top three sectors of focus for CSR initiatives in the district were Education, Health, and Environment with a spending of Rs. 77.62 Cr., Rs. 53.67 Cr., and Rs. 28.67 Cr. in the respective sectors. The top companies contributing for CSR in the district in the financial year include Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (Rs. 7.54 Cr.), Panasonic Life Solutions India Private Limited (Rs. 6.93 Cr.), and Macrotech Developers Limited (Rs. 6 Cr.).

CSR Collaboration to make Thane Greener

In collaboration with Thane Municipal Corporation and Thane Tree Authority, Oberoi Realty, recently announced the launch of its Thane City Beautification Drive. This transformative CSR initiative is aimed at enhancing Thane’s green cover for sustainable urban development. The initiative aligns with the city’s Smart City vision, strategically redefining its landscape to foster environmental and infrastructural improvements while reinforcing Oberoi Realty’s CSR efforts to eco-conscious urbanization.

25 Water Kiosks installed across Thane with CSR support

In an initiative to provide relief to the citizens amid scorching heat, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has installed 25 water kiosks across the city in collaboration with MCHI (Maharashtra Chamber of Housing Industry) and Samarth Bharat Vyaspeeth. This move is part of the action plan devised by the TMC to mitigate the challenges posed by rising temperatures due to urbanization.

The water kiosks have been installed at Thane Station, Kopri Bridge, Ice Factory, Jawaharbagh, Asher IT Park, Kisannagar School, Ambika Nagar No. 3, Padwal Nagar, Hajuri Gaon, Passport Office, Teen Hath Naka, Kolshet Road Naka, Balkum Naka, Majiwada Naka, Kalwa Station, 90 Feet Road-Kharegaon, Kalwa Naka-Datt Mandir, Kausa Talav, Wafa Park, Amrit Nagar, Lokmanya Depot, Rabodi, Court Naka, Vartaknagar Naka, and Shastri Nagar Naka.

These kiosks have been funded through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. At these 25 locations, large water containers and glasses have been placed, and the respective organizations are ensuring a regular supply of potable water daily, as per reports.

Sewage Treatment Plant at Thane Railway Station by Meyer Organics

A new sewage treatment plant was inaugurated at Thane Railway station premises in January 2023. The plant treats 45 kilolitres of sewage generated every day by Thane Railway Station premises, railway colony, offices, hospital and institute facilities at Thane. The plant is expected to reduce municipal water consumption by up to 60 percent and produce approximately 100 kgs of compost every month, which can be used in gardens and residential colonies.

Built by Meyer Organics under its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, the sewage treatment plant uses highly effective MBBR technology to treat sewage. The technology uses layers of bio-films containing bacteria to break down sewage into clean usable water and rich compost. Meyer Organics is part of UK’s leading nutraceuticals company Vitabiotics.

Robot for cleaning manhole by Tata Trust

The Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation received the third manhole cleaning robot in December, 2022. The robot has been donated by the Tata Trust through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. The civic body has decided to use robots to clean the clogged sewers in the city instead of using the UMC labours. Earlier, the Municipal Corporation had purchased two robots with CSR funds.

SBI donates ambulance to Thane Zilla Parishad

State Bank of India (SBI) donated a fully-equipped ambulance to the Zilla Parishad of Thane earlier this month. This initiative aims to boost emergency medical services in the region. The ambulance, outfitted with state-of-the-art medical facilities, was formally handed over to Ashok Shingare (IAS), District Collector, and Manuj Jindal (IAS), Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Parishad Thane in the presence of Joohi Smita Sinha, General Manager Network II, Mumbai Metro Circle, SBI along with officials from Zilla Parishad, Thane and SBI.

Panasonic Life Solutions India’s Mobile Medical Unit

Panasonic Life Solutions India launched a Mobile Medical Unit with the support of Gurukrupa foundation to improve the health conditions of people in Thane in August, 2023. This ongoing effort under the Arogyadoot project will aim to provide Primary Health Care through a Mobile Medical Unit.

The van will cater to residents of low-income groups in Chirag Nagar, Majiwada, Nalpada, Kokanipada, and Dharmveer Nagar treating OPD ailments while performing blood and sugar tests, as well as offering generic drug support for fever, cough, cold, viral infection, and other skin problems which will be free of cost. This endeavor aims to increase the impact of providing health care systems to people of low-income groups.

AWS Think Big Space programme

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the expansion of the AWS Think Big Space programme in the Mumbai Metro Region by introducing it to two government-run schools in Thane in June this year. The programme aims to enable students to cultivate an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) disciplines. The program has been introduced to students of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) School number 60 and number 112, to benefit more than 220 students in the age group of six to 15 years.

AWS Think Big Spaces are labs designed to provide students from underserved communities a place beyond the classroom to explore and cultivate an interest in STEAM disciplines. These labs encourage a hands-on approach, enabling students to tinker and explore so that they can think big to solve real-world problems.

Project PEUSC

Project PEUSC (Promoting Education for Underprivileged School Children) is a CSR initiative by RDC Concrete, independent ready-mix concrete manufacturing Indian company. This project aims to support education initiatives for children from deprived sections of society all over India, covering over 70 similar schools.

Earlier this year, the company undertook the renovation of Ganesh Vidyalaya, a semi-government school for underprivileged students located in Kharegaon, Kalwa near Thane. The renovation efforts at Ganesh Vidyalaya were comprehensive and focused on addressing critical infrastructure needs. A 1500-liter water tank was installed to ensure a steady supply of clean drinking water for the students. Moreover, the installation of water purifiers further enhanced the water quality, safeguarding the health of the students. The company also repaired the existing desks, which were in a dilapidated condition, and also procured new ones to ensure comfortable seating for the students.

Project Tejas

Tejas, a teacher training project delivered by the British Council in association with Tata Trusts and the Maharashtra State Government, has upskilled 51,000 teachers across 36 districts in Maharashtra, who in turn, teach 1.4 million young students in the state schools.

The project set out to benefit primary school teachers and students across government schools in Maharashtra through improved English language proficiency. Tejas was run through an engaging, replicable model wherein teachers could not only manage their own development but also sustain it for larger peer to peer groups, in and beyond the State.

Tejas is a significant project for the State of Maharashtra as it represents a transition from a traditional model of teacher training to a more sustainable, internally supported approach that promotes holistic professional development through communities of practice. The project has helped build the State’s institutional capacity to support and implement large-scale, long-term in-service teacher training programmes which do not rely solely on cascade training as the medium of delivery.

The five-year project (2016-21) showed resilience to the pandemic and met its timeline by embracing the virtual platform and holding over 3,500 online meetings in the past year since the first lockdown.

The project started as a pilot in nine districts of Maharashtra in 2016 and later was scaled up in 27 other districts including Thane among others.

Oxygen on Wheels Project

In order to aid the fight against the pandemic, the Mahindra Group rolled out a free service initiative, ‘Oxygen on Wheels’ (O2W), to strengthen the availability of oxygen by connecting oxygen producers with the hospitals and medical centres in dire need of it.

O2W was launched in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Chakan, Nasik and Nagpur with over 100 Mahindra vehicles ferrying oxygen. The initiative was helmed by Mahindra Logistics in partnership with the administration and local government bodies. With a large fleet of vehicles at its disposal and an integrated command and control centre, Mahindra Logistics has been working on creating a seamless and endless chain of supply of lifesaving oxygen and transport it to the hospitals and medical centres in a way that is safe and reliable.

LANXESS  B-ABLE Skill Centre

LANXESS India Private Limited has established a skill development centre in Thane as part of its CSR programme to provide training to aspiring candidates looking for suitable employability. The LANXESS  B-ABLE SKILL CENTRE was set up in association with BASIX Academy for Building Lifelong Employability Limited (B-Able) who is the implementation partner for the project for a period of three years starting from 2019, covering Thane, Jhagadia and Nagda.

In its first year, LANXESS India trained 129 candidates in its centre in Thane wherein the candidates were given training under the categories of Sewing Machine operators and Call Centre executives. The courses started in January 2019 and after completion, candidates were assisted with placements.

A total of 96 candidates which is 78% of the total enrolments, have been placed in companies or have started their own business after the project concluded. LANXESS has supported B-Able on this project with the cost of mobilization, training, human resource, rent for the facility etc.

The project is focused on providing skill development training for the youth who are unskilled, semi-skilled, school dropouts and come from the underprivileged sections living in and around LANXESS India’s operations.

Water Project by Mahindra Logistics

Shahapur is the largest taluka in the Thane district and faces severe water shortage during the summer season. Towards easing the situation and improving the lives of residents, Mahindra Logistics has adopted Tembha and is conducting various developmental initiatives including infrastructure development, education, health and vocational guidance amongst others.

The company has set up a water project at Jambhulpada, a hamlet in Tembha village near Shahapur, as part of its CSR initiative in 2018. The initiative has benefitted around 75 families and permanently resolved their water woes.

The Tata, Ambani, Adani, and the Birla groups of companies have contributed between Rs 200-1,500 crore for CSR, according to the latest India Philanthropy Report 2025 released by Bain & Company in collaboration with Dasra.

“Family-owned/run firms have been critical to India’s growth story, championing corporate responsibility long before the 2014 mandate requiring CSR contributions. Family-owned/run businesses contribute 65%–70% of private-sector CSR spending annually, totaling approximately INR 18,000 crore, with the top 2% of family-owned/run firms contributing 50%–55% of the total family-owned/run businesses’ CSR contribution, highlighting the outsized role of a few key players,” mentions the report.

India’s Social Sector Funding Has Grown Steadily

The report further highlights that India’s social sector spending is projected to increase to approximately Rs 45 lakh crore (9.6% of GDP) by FY 2029, with public funding continuing to account for about 95% of this. The spending is rapidly growing in the healthcare segment, while education spending is expected to grow at a moderate pace.

India’s social sector funding has grown at a steady rate of 13% over the past five years and is estimated to have reached Rs 25 lakh crore (8.3% of GDP) in FY 2024. Primarily driven by public spending, accounting for 95% of total funding, it is projected to increase to Rs 45 lakh crore (9.6% of GDP) by FY 2029. Despite robust funding growth, the sector is Rs 14 lakh crore short of estimates by NITI Aayog. The gap is projected to increase to Rs 16 lakh crore by FY 2029.

Growth in Public and Private Spending

Public spending has also grown 13% annually over the past five years, reaching Rs 23 lakh crore (7.9% of GDP) in FY 2024. By FY 2029, it is projected to increase to Rs 43 lakh crore (9.1% of GDP), driven by higher growth in healthcare and moderate growth in education spending.

The report further highlights that private spending grew more moderately, with a 7% increase from FY 2023 to FY 2024, reaching Rs 131,000 crore. However, private spending is expected to accelerate to 10%–12% growth over the next five years, largely driven by family philanthropy from ultra-high-net-worth individuals, high-net-worth individuals, and affluent individuals.

Family Philanthropy Contributing to India’s Socio-Economic Development

Family giving accounts for approximately 40% of private philanthropy, with families contributing to India’s economic and social development through personal giving and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives from family-owned/run businesses, says the report. It highlights that families are reshaping the philanthropic landscape by:

Investing in underfunded and niche causes, with 40% of families supporting gender, equity, diversity, and inclusion (GEDI), 29% supporting climate action, and 39% of families aspiring to support ecosystem strengthening in the future

Strengthening philanthropy infrastructure by investing in collaboratives and building narratives, sectoral capacity, and institutions

Inclusive, diverse, and forward-looking giving approaches, with 55% of families having women-led philanthropy and 33% of families having Inter-generational and Now-generational givers anchoring philanthropy efforts

Professionalising their giving, with approximately 65% of families having dedicated staff to manage their philanthropy portfolios; additionally, 41% of families prefer grant-making as their primary approach, while 23% integrate both grant-making and direct program implementation

Role of Family Philanthropists in Making India a Global Leader

“India is emerging as a global leader in developing scalable, cost-effective solutions to address social challenges. Family philanthropists—with their patient capital and long-term vision—are uniquely positioned to drive global impact by supporting frugal innovation by India’s dynamic nonprofits. This can position India as a global force for social innovation advancing the country’s vision for a Viksit Bharat by 2047,” the report mentions.

जीन म्यूटैशन और DNA रिपेयर दोष है वजह

शोधकर्ताओं के अनुसार, तीन जीन में म्यूटैशन और DNA रिपेयर प्रक्रिया में दोष ही ब्रेस्ट कैंसर Relapse की मुख्य वजह है। ‘Nature Group of Gernal Communication Biology’ में प्रकाशित ये शोध 2016 से 2025 के बीच हुई। रिसर्च टीम का मार्गदर्शन डॉ. अर्णब घोष और डॉ. रोहन चौबल ने किया। टीम में प्रोफेसर अरिंदम मैत्रा, TMC निदेशक डॉ. सुदीप गुप्ता,NIBMG के निदेशक प्रोफेसर पारथा मजूमदार सहित अन्य लोग शामिल थे। अध्ययनकर्ता डॉ. रोहन चौबल ने बताया कि कुल 40 मरीजों के सैम्पल लिए गए थे,जिनमे से 20 सैम्पल उनके थे जिनमे कैंसर Relapse हुआ था और 20 लोगों में दोबारा नहीं हुआ था।

TMC ने ट्यूमर की होल जीनोम Sequencing कर दो वजहों का लगाया पता

सैम्पल की जीनोम सीक्वन्सिंग करने के बाद Relapse वाले अधिकतर सैम्पलस में तीन  जीन Resistance Signature में म्यूटैशन देखने को मिला, जबकि सेंसेटिव सैम्पल में म्यूटैशन नहीं था। Drug Resistance ट्यूमर में DNA मरम्मत प्रकिया में ही दोष होता है, जिससे जीनोम अस्थिरता और अनियंत्रित ट्यूमर में वृद्धि होती है। डॉ. सुदीप गुप्ता के अनुसार यह शोध ईलाज के बारे में नहीं है बल्कि ट्यूमर दोबारा क्यूँ होता है,इसके बारे में है। अभी इस शोध के हिसाब से नए ईलाज कारगर साबित होंगे या नहीं, ये देखना बाकी है। इसके लिए क्लीनिकल ट्रायल्स करने होंगे ताकि तीनों जीन म्यूटैशन और DNA Repair प्रक्रिया के दोषों को दूर किया जा सके। बहरहाल TMC की इस शोध ने ब्रेस्ट कैंसर से पीड़ित महिलाओं में उम्मीद की एक किरन तो जगा ही दी है।

Determined to bring about change, Vishnu decided to implement the Wadi project, a tree-based farming programme in partnership with BAIF. This initiative, designed to support farmers with sustainable practices, provided Vishnu with new resources and training for planting and nurturing trees. He actively attended training sessions, visited demonstration plots, and learned innovative farming techniques that transformed his approach to agriculture.

Enthused with the response, Vishnu got involved in Tata Motors’ Integrated Village Development Programme. An access to a lined farm pond and a drip irrigation kit enabled Vishnu to cultivate vegetables and ensure a consistent water supply.Additionally, Vishnu ventured into fish farming, rearing about 1000 fishes of species like Rohu and Katla.

By 2023-24, Vishnu’s income through additional farming activities reached ₹61,400, including the cultivation of chili, cucumber, and cashews.His once-barren land now flourishes with cashew and mango orchards, offering a steady, year-round income. In addition to financial stability, this shift has opened up new avenues for his family, ensuring a better future.

Expressing his gratitude, Vishnu said, “Initially, I was skeptical about the new methods because I had always relied on traditional rainfed farming.From struggling to feed my family, I now have surplus produce that I can sell in the market. The income has helped me provide quality education for my children and better healthcare for my family. I am no longer forced to migrate for labour work.”

Vishnu’s success has indeed sparked a change in his community, with local farmers shifting from traditional methods to sustainable practices. This shift has not only reduced migration but also enhanced educational opportunities for their children.

Vinod Kulkarni, CSR Head, Tata Motors, highlighted the broader impact of such initiatives, stating, “The success and transformation of farmers like Vishnu Gond is a gratifying testament to our approach of layering of programmes to benefit the rural communities. Our initiatives such as the Wadi project and Integrated Rural Development programme are equipping farmers like Vishnu with sustainable farming method. The year-long campaign, running until December 28, 2025, invites individuals and corporates to write a tribute and/or dedicate trees to the ‘Ratan Tata Memorial Forest’ via Grow-trees. Each dedication will include the supporter’s/ planter’s name and a one-line tribute to Mr Tata, which will be featured on the Ratan Tata Memorial Forest section of the website. Upon completion of the campaign, the final eTreeCertificate® listing the total number of trees planted, along with the tributes and names of the supporter’s/ planter’s, will be presented to Tata Sons.

‘Ratan Tata Memorial Forest’ will also create 23 water bodies to store and recharge groundwater. It will also additionally focus on educating girls from rural communities and training farmers in climate-resilient agriculture. The forest will feature various species such as Banj, Bakian, Bhatula, Bhimal, Majuna, Glaucus oak, Purple Orchid, Kachnar, Padam, Mediterranean Hackberry, Tej, Jamun, White Willow, Himalayan Mulberry and Indian Horse Chestnut.

Grow-Trees.com envisions the tree cover as a heartfelt gesture for the industrialist who passed away in October 2024.
