Railway-linked stocks staged a strong comeback in early trade on Friday, emerging among the top gainers on Dalal Street after months of underperformance. At around mid-morning, shares of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) and Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) surged sharply, reflecting renewed investor confidence in the sector. The rally marked a decisive shift in sentiment toward railway stocks, which had lagged the broader market through much of 2025.

Pre-Budget Positioning Fuels Buying

A key driver behind the up-move is pre-Budget positioning ahead of the Union Budget 2026–27. Historically, railway stocks attract buying interest in the weeks leading up to the Budget as investors anticipate higher government allocations for infrastructure, rolling stock, safety systems, electrification and network expansion. With railways expected to remain a core pillar of India’s infrastructure push, investors are rebuilding positions in anticipation of fresh policy support and capital expenditure announcements.

“The rally in railway stocks is being driven by building expectations ahead of the Union Budget. There is a strong anticipation that the government will further scale up railway capex and overall infrastructure outlays, and this positive outlook is being reflected in the sector’s performance,” said Kranthi Bathini, Director of Equity Strategy at WealthMills Securities.

Fare Rationalisation Lifts Sector Sentiment

Another major catalyst has been the implementation of a revised passenger fare structure effective December 26. This marks the second fare hike in 2025–26 and is aimed at improving the financial sustainability of Indian Railways. Under the new structure, ordinary non-AC fares have been increased in a graded manner, while Mail and Express trains, both AC and non-AC, have seen a uniform hike of 2 paise per kilometre. Though modest for passengers, the cumulative revenue impact is significant and has been welcomed by markets as a positive step toward better financial discipline.

Revenue Visibility Benefits Ecosystem Players

The fare rationalisation has improved revenue visibility across the railways ecosystem. Companies such as IRCTC, which benefit from ticketing volumes, catering, tourism and ancillary services, are viewed as indirect beneficiaries of stronger passenger economics. Even marginal fare increases signal a willingness to address long-standing revenue challenges, boosting confidence in the sector’s long-term earnings stability.

Shravan Shetty, Managing Director of Primus Partners, said the gains were linked to the fare hike announcement and its potential impact on railway finances.

“While railway stocks are not directly impacted by fare revisions, an improvement in the financial health of Indian Railways could accelerate capital expenditure and support revenue growth for wagon and infrastructure players,” Shetty said.

Sunny Agrawal, Head of Fundamental Research at SBI Securities, said the rally has largely been driven by Budget-related expectations. He said the initial trigger was the conversion of a preferential issue by the promoter of Jupiter Wagons, which led to a sharp rise in the stock and subsequently spilled over to other railway engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) companies.

Agrawal said SBI Securities prefers wagon-related businesses and sees the current rally as an opportunity to book profits in railway EPC stocks such as IRCON, RITES and RVNL. “Any further rise ahead of the Budget should be utilised for profit booking,” he said.

IRFC Gains on Funding and Capex Optimism

IRFC’s sharp rise reflects improving confidence around its funding outlook. As the dedicated financing arm of Indian Railways, IRFC typically benefits when borrowing costs stabilise and capex visibility improves. Expectations of sustained borrowing for large rail projects, coupled with government backing, have strengthened the investment case for the stock after a prolonged phase of consolidation.

RVNL Leads Rally on Execution Bets

RVNL emerged as the standout performer, driven by aggressive buying from both value investors and short-term traders. As an execution-focused infrastructure company, RVNL is closely linked to project awards, order inflows and government spending decisions. After correcting sharply earlier in the year, the stock has attracted interest on expectations of a pre-Budget re-rating and improved execution momentum.

Railway stocks were among the laggards for most of 2025, weighed down by execution concerns, muted earnings growth and profit-booking after a strong multi-year rally. That underperformance has now created room for a rebound, especially as investors hunt for policy-driven themes and relatively undervalued sectors toward year-end.

What Investors Will Watch Next?

While sentiment has clearly improved, analysts caution that the sustainability of the rally will depend on concrete follow-through from the Budget. Investors will closely track signals on railway capital expenditure, safety spending, project execution timelines and funding clarity. Without fresh triggers, the current upmove may remain tactical rather than structural, even as railway stocks return firmly to investor radar.

Railway Blanket Cover:

A tragic and disturbing incident has come to light from Mumbai’s LTT railway station. The body of a three-year-old boy was discovered inside the dustbin of a train toilet. The body was found on the Kushinagar Express (Train No. 22537) at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Mumbai during the early hours of Saturday.

According to reports, the shocking discovery was made by the cleaning staff around 1 AM. This came as they carried out routine sanitation of the B2 Third AC coach of the train. The train had arrived from Gorakhpur and was preparing to depart as Kashi Express.

Cleaning Supervisor Raises Alarm

While cleaning the train on Platform No. 4, a sanitation worker noticed the child’s body stuffed inside a dustbin in the toilet. The incident was immediately reported to the station manager at 1:50 AM, following which senior railway officials, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), and the Government Railway Police (GRP) reached the scene. The body was sent to Rajawadi Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Initial findings from the investigation suggest that the child was strangled to death before being concealed in the dustbin. Investigators are treating the case as a suspected murder. Railway police have registered a case, and CCTV footage is being examined to trace the events leading up to the crime. A joint probe by GRP and RPF is currently underway.

Link to Missing Complaint Filed in Surat

In response the police have revealed a possible link to a kidnapping case filed a day earlier. It was filed by the child’s mother in Surat, Gujarat. She had alleged that her 25-year-old cousin, Vikash Shah, abducted her son. Authorities are now probing whether Shah boarded the train with the child and played a role in his death.

Passengers in Shock, Security Under Scrutiny

Meanwhile, the gruesome incident has triggered shock and fear among passengers at the bustling Mumbai terminus. Railways are facing renewed scrutiny over onboard safety and surveillance, especially in long-distance trains. Officials assure that a detailed report and further action will follow pending investigation outcomes.

IRCTC UPI Charges RTI

IRCTC surcharge on UPI

Reality

Indian Railways has taken a major leap in freight mobility with the dedication of the Loco Manufacturing Shop at the Rolling Stock Workshop in Dahod, Gujarat by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. This moment marked a pivotal milestone in the ongoing transformation of freight transport.

The facility, designed to produce 1,200 cutting-edge electric freight locomotives with a powerful 9000 HP capacity, stands as a testament to India’s engineering prowess and industrial ambition.

New era in freight transportation

At the dedication ceremony, the first electric locomotive from this workshop was ceremoniously flagged off, marking the dawn of a new era in freight transportation, one characterised by higher speeds, greater hauling power and a deep commitment to sustainability. With the ability to haul 4,500 to 5,000 tonnes even on steep gradients, these locomotives are set to be game-changers in heavy-duty freight movement.

Proudly built under the Make in India initiative, these locomotives are equipped with advanced IGBT-based propulsion technology, ensuring superior energy efficiency and operational performance. Together, these features position Indian Railways at the forefront of modern, reliable and eco-friendly freight logistics.

Power That Transforms Freight Logistics

The 9000 HP locomotive is the most powerful single-unit electric engine ever developed for Indian Railways. Until now, freight locomotives have typically operated at 4500 or 6000 HP capacities. While 12,000 HP engines do exist, they are created by coupling two 6000 HP units.

In contrast, the Dahod-built locomotive offers a unified, high-powered solution that can haul significantly longer and heavier freight trains with ease. This leap in capacity means fewer trips are needed for the same volume of goods, resulting in faster turnaround times, reduced congestion and improved freight efficiency.

Reducing Congestion, Lowering Costs

The increased hauling power of the 9000 HP locomotive offers a solution to one of Indian Railways’ biggest challenges: congestion on high-density freight routes. With fewer locomotives required to pull heavier loads, rail traffic can be optimised, thereby easing pressure on busy corridors.

Moreover, by replacing multiple smaller engines with one high-performance locomotive, Indian Railways stands to reduce operating costs, manpower requirements and energy consumption. These gains will ultimately translate into lower logistics costs for industries, contributing to more competitive pricing and streamlined supply chains.

Reviving Dahod: A Regional and National Asset

The decision to manufacture these advanced locomotives in Dahod is not just a strategic industrial move, it is a revival of the region’s railway heritage. Once a major hub for railway works, Dahod had seen a decline after key railway work was shifted elsewhere.

In 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisioned Dahod’s resurgence as a railway manufacturing powerhouse. Today, that vision has materialised with the setting up of a world-class facility in partnership with Siemens India, selected through a transparent tendering process.

The factory is equipped to produce both Broad Gauge locomotives for Indian Railways and Standard Gauge locomotives for export. This dual capability strengthens India’s positioning in the global rail manufacturing market. With 89% of the components made in India, the project aligns perfectly with the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Make for World’ visions. High-quality, cost-effective production makes these locomotives highly exportable, opening new doors for India in international railway supply chains.

Green Manufacturing, Cleaner Future

What sets the 9000 HP locomotive apart is its deep integration of sustainability. The manufacturing process itself is powered by green energy, earning the facility a Green Manufacturing tag.

The locomotive design includes regenerative braking, which feeds electricity back into the grid when brakes are applied, further reducing the carbon footprint. These features make the locomotive a strong contributor to India’s climate commitments and environmental goals, moving the nation closer to a greener future in transportation.

Safety, Comfort and Smart Engineering

From factory-fitted Kavach (India’s indigenous train collision avoidance system) to modern driver cabins with air-conditioning, low noise and minimal vibration, the 9000 HP engine is engineered with safety and comfort in mind.

Toilets feature electronic locks that can only be accessed when the engine is stationary, ensuring operational discipline. Onboard cameras on all sides provide enhanced monitoring and security.

Training for Tomorrow

A highlight of the Dahod facility is its focus on skill development through immersive training technology. A virtual digital model of the locomotive has been developed to enhance training for mechanics and drivers. Using VR headsets, trainees can interact with a highly realistic simulation of the locomotive, allowing them to explore and familiarise themselves with every component in a safe, immersive environment.

Employment, Empowerment, and Skill Development

Around 85% of the jobs created though the infrastructure development are held by local youth. Skill development is embedded into the project, with training modules designed to upgrade the technical capabilities of the workforce. The factory’s presence is already catalysing infrastructure development and ancillary industries in the region, driving long-term economic growth.

The 9000 HP locomotive will turn out to be the linchpin of a bold new freight ecosystem. Its power, efficiency and design sophistication promise to make Indian Railways more competitive, more sustainable and better equipped for future demands. By combining the strengths of technology, regional development and global vision, the Dahod-built locomotive is set to redefine the trajectory of freight transport, not just in India, but on the world stage.
