Every Saturday afternoon in Tamil Nadu’s Tirupparankundram, hundreds of monkeys gather across temple premises and nearby hills in anticipation of the arrival of a 76-year-old woman who has spent years making sure they do not go hungry.

Malathi, a retired police officer from Madurai, has been using a portion of her pension to feed monkeys in the area for nearly a decade. What began as an act of compassion has evolved into a weekly ritual that she says gives her immense happiness and purpose.

Service Continued After Retirement

Retirement in 2010 marked a new chapter for Malathi rather than the end of public service.

Before stepping away from work, she served in several roles, including as Director of Physical Education at Gandhigram University, worked at an international school in Kodaikanal and spent 33 years with the Tamil Nadu Police Department.

Since 2015, however, much of her attention has been devoted to the monkeys living around the Tirupparankundram Murugan Temple and the surrounding hills.

Speaking to ANI, Malathi said she was moved to act after noticing the growing number of monkeys struggling to find food.

“These monkeys live in forested and hilly regions and struggle daily to find food. Around 2015, I noticed the large monkey population in and around Tirupparankundram Murugan Temple and decided to help them. Since then, I have been feeding them regularly,” she said.

Weekly Visits Continue Despite Health Challenges

For many years, Malathi visited the area every day. However, advancing age and health concerns have made daily trips difficult.

“For many years, I visited the area every day. However, I am now 76, and due to health issues, walking long distances has become difficult. Even so, I continue my service every Saturday,” she told ANI.

Every week, she visits six locations around Tirupparankundram, including the temple premises, Saravana Poigai, Palchunaikanda Subramaniam Temple, Mayil Thoppu, also known as Peacock Grove, and the Fort area.

Her arrival is often met by scores of monkeys that appear to recognise her calls.

Hundreds Gather at the Sound of Her Voice

According to Malathi, around 350 to 400 monkeys across the region gather when she arrives each Saturday afternoon.

“There are approximately 350 to 400 monkeys across these locations. Every Saturday at around 3:30 pm, when I call them, they gather for food. At some places, nearly 50 monkeys come at once. Around the Cave Temple, there are about 150 monkeys, while Peacock Grove is home to nearly 200 monkeys,” she said.

She said monkeys of all ages, from infants to adults, turn up for the food she brings.

For Malathi, the weekly exercise has become much more than a routine.

“Serving these animals gives me immense happiness and deep mental satisfaction. Their trust and affection bring great meaning to my life. As long as I am physically able, I will continue this mission. It is my sincere wish to carry on this service until the very end of my life,” she said.

Nearly a decade after she first began feeding the animals, Malathi’s Saturdays continue to revolve around a mission she considers deeply fulfilling.

The narrative surrounding various ambassadors highlights their active participation in community engagement and philanthropy that extends beyond mere representation. Rather than solely acting as figureheads, these individuals have committed to making substantial contributions toward societal betterment, particularly through charity initiatives and grassroots programmes. Their involvement illustrates a distinctive blend of diplomacy and personal dedication.

Key Contributions and Notable Activities

A number of ambassadors have undertaken significant projects aimed at addressing local challenges. They have reportedly initiated diverse educational programmes that seek to empower underprivileged communities. These efforts include establishing scholarships for talented yet economically disadvantaged students, thus facilitating access to quality education and fostering future leaders.

In addition to educational initiatives, several ambassadors have championed health-related campaigns. For instance, there have been programmes focused on improving maternal and child health by promoting awareness and providing essential medical resources in remote areas. Such health outreach has been pivotal in enhancing the well-being of vulnerable populations.

Environmental sustainability is also a prominent focus for many ambassadors. They have aligned with local organisations to spearhead tree-planting drives and promote eco-friendly practices among communities. By urging citizens to participate in conservation efforts, these ambassadors aim to create a long-lasting impact on the environment while nurturing a collective responsibility towards nature conservation.

Community Engagement and Public Support

The ambassadors’ dedication to these initiatives has garnered local support, demonstrated by community participation in various events. Their ability to connect with citizens, listen to concerns, and take actionable steps towards addressing those issues has been vital. This approach has not only strengthened the bond between the ambassadors and the communities but has also fostered a sense of shared responsibility for societal improvement.

Public response to these efforts has been largely positive, with many citizens expressing appreciation for the tangible changes they have witnessed. By focusing on real-world issues and implementing practical solutions, ambassadors have positioned themselves as facilitators of change, rather than just representatives of their respective nations.

Moreover, collaborations with local NGOs have proven effective in amplifying their efforts. Partnering with established organisations allows ambassadors to leverage existing resources and networks, effectively increasing the reach and impact of their initiatives. This collaborative model exemplifies how partnerships can significantly enhance community-based efforts by delivering targeted support where it is most needed.

Conclusion and Reflection on Ongoing Commitments

The real impact of the ambassadors’ work can be seen in the lasting changes within communities and the strong relationships fostered between different cultures. Their commitment to running effective programmes demonstrates a dedication that transcends their official roles, showcasing a willingness to engage deeply with local issues. This engagement highlights the pivotal role that ambassadors can play in bridging gaps and fostering mutual understanding.

As these ambassadors continue their efforts, the hope is that their influence will encourage further collaboration between citizens and governing bodies. Sustained initiatives have the potential not only to address immediate community needs but also to inspire future generations to take charge of their environments. The legacy of these ambassadors may well serve as a benchmark for others in similar positions, encouraging a more profound engagement with the societies they represent.

In conclusion, the activities led by these ambassadors are indicative of their commitment to making a meaningful contribution. Their efforts in education, health, and environmental sustainability showcase a comprehensive approach to diplomacy that resonates with both local populations and broader international audiences. This ongoing engagement is proving to be an essential aspect of their roles, reinforcing the notion that true leadership involves direct action and a genuine commitment to those served.

“The government must make strict guidelines for CSR funding,” says Shalini Passi, a philanthropist and artist, popularly remembered for the Netflix reality series Fabulous Lives vs. Bollywood Wives. She released her debut book titled The Art of Being Fabulous at the Jaipur Literature Festival on Thursday morning. In an exclusive conversation with The CSR Journal, Shalini spoke about her philanthropy work, her book, and her purpose in life.

For Shalini, the idea of giving back to society is more than charity—it gives her joy and a deeper purpose in life. Her philanthropic journey did not begin with success, privilege, or social position; rather, it started at a very early age. “My journey started when I was in standard six. I made a big painting and donated it. The joy it gave me was unforgettable,” she recalls.

What began as a school project soon turned into a lifelong purpose. Shalini has long been associated with philanthropic work. She recalls several occasions when she and her husband extended support—during the devastating floods in Jammu & Kashmir and later during the COVID-19 pandemic. “It gave me a higher reason for living,” she says. “That feeling stays with you.”

Purpose Beyond Privilege

Shalini belongs to what is often described as “high society,” where privilege comes with responsibility. Speaking about CSR activities today, she says, “People talk about CSR, and yes, many big companies do contribute diligently. But often, CSR becomes about pet projects or optics. It should be more meaningful.”

She believes the government has a larger role to play. “There should be stricter guidelines. CSR funds should be monitored better and allocated towards real needs such as village development, hospitals, and education.”

Operating outside the corporate framework, she shares that she and her husband have been donating for years, often without disclosure. “For a long time, we never spoke about it,” she says. “But recently, people suggested that I should speak so others feel inspired. That’s when I started talking about our charity work publicly.”

Giving Runs in the Family

For Shalini, philanthropy is the purpose of her life—and it runs in her family. They believe in doing good without propagating it. “My husband believes in gupt daan—giving without announcement or acknowledgment,” she notes. “He inspires through silence,” she smiles. “I, on the other hand, have started speaking out—not for attention, but to inspire others.”

The art of healing

Art is an integral part of Shalini’s being. The word Fabulous was made popular through the series she was part of and became the inspiration behind the title of her book, The Art of Being Fabulous. When she first decided to write her book, it wasn’t a calculated move. “I’m not a writer,” she admits candidly. “So, I was sceptical when I started.” She began writing a year ago without making any announcement. Encouraged by positive feedback from publishers and authors—who described it as an easy and relatable read—she finally decided to send it for print.

Talking about the book, Shalini shares that it is a celebration of living beautifully and with dignity. It blends soulful philosophy with art, fashion, and spiritual wisdom, structured around ten rules for living life on one’s own terms. “When you read this book, you will connect. There are many emotions, and there will be moments when you feel the story is yours,” she says. “It’s an easy read, but full of incidents that make you emotional, happy, and reflective.”

At JLF, Shalini Passi launched The Art of Being Fabulous, urged stricter CSR norms, and spoke on purpose-driven philanthropy and dignified living.

Dr K Laxmi Bai, one of Odisha’s most respected gynaecologists, has marked her centenary year by donating Rs 3.4 crore from her lifetime savings to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for women’s cancer care. The retired doctor, who will complete 100 years on 5 December, has requested that the amount be used to build a strong gynaecological oncology programme that can offer better diagnosis, treatment and training in cancers affecting women.

The donation of Rs 3.4 crore has been handed over to AIIMS Bhubaneswar as a dedicated corpus to support cancer services for women, particularly from poor and vulnerable sections. The institute plans to utilise the funds to develop a gynaecological oncology programme that can provide comprehensive care for cancers of the cervix, uterus, ovary and other reproductive organs, along with training specialists in this field.

In addition to the main donation, Dr Laxmi Bai has contributed Rs 3 lakh to the Berhampur Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society for vaccination drives aimed at preventing cancer among adolescent girls, especially through HPV and other recommended vaccines. Senior doctors at AIIMS Bhubaneswar and members of the society have described the gesture as historic for a government institute and said the money will be used with clear focus on poor patients and preventive programmes.

A Career Spanning Five Decades

Born on 5 December 1926, Dr K Laxmi Bai belongs to the first MBBS batch of SCB Medical College, Cuttack, where she enrolled in 1945 and completed her degree in 1950. She went on to pursue DGO and MD in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from Madras Medical College in 1958, and later received a coveted one‑year stipend for public health training at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, USA, reflecting her academic excellence.

Her government service began in 1950 at the district hospital in Sundargarh, from where she went on to serve in several hospitals and medical colleges across Odisha. She eventually retired in 1986 as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology from MKCG Medical College, Berhampur, after more than three decades in government service and over five decades in active practice.

Service Beyond Retirement

Even after retirement from MKCG, Dr Laxmi Bai continued to see patients for many years, becoming a familiar and trusted name for women from different economic backgrounds. Former colleagues recall that she conducted thousands of deliveries and treated countless women who often travelled long distances to consult her, particularly those who could not afford high‑end private care.

She has been living a simple life at Bhaba Nagar in Berhampur, and despite her age, has remained active and independent, which many in the medical fraternity see as a reflection of her disciplined lifestyle and commitment to patients. Even as she steps into her 100th year, the choice to donate her entire savings to public health has been viewed as an extension of the same sense of duty that marked her working years.

Awards and Recognition

Over the years, Dr Laxmi Bai has received multiple honours, including the Lady Eminence of South Odisha title, the Bharat Jyoti Award, recognition from the International Friendship Society and the Best Citizen of India Award. These awards have come from different organisations in India and abroad, acknowledging both her clinical work and her role in promoting dignified and accessible healthcare for women.

However, many of her students and peers say that her greatest legacy lies in the generations of doctors she has mentored and the number of lives she has touched, often going beyond formal duty to help patients during difficult times. Her latest decision to give away her savings has further strengthened this image of a doctor who has kept service at the centre of her personal and professional life.

A Message of Compassion and Responsibility

While announcing the donation, Dr Laxmi Bai expressed the wish that the money be used specifically for the benefit of poor and helpless women suffering from cancer, many of whom she saw struggling for treatment during her long practice. She has also spoken of her hope that a strong gynaecological oncology programme at AIIMS Bhubaneswar will not only save lives but also train young specialists who can carry forward the work in future.

For AIIMS Bhubaneswar, the contribution comes as both financial support and moral responsibility, with senior faculty members stating that such trust from a veteran doctor places a duty on the institution to expand its services for women’s cancers.

India’s Most Generous

India’s Most Generous Philanthropist

Young Philanthropists in India

Education Philanthropy in India भारत के दानवीरों ने एक बार फिर दिखाया कि Education remains the top cause।

Mumbai becomes Philanthropy Capital of India:

Hurun India Philanthropy, EdelGive Foundation

Popular educator and YouTuber Faizal Khan, widely known as Khan Sir, has announced a large-scale healthcare initiative aimed at serving Bihar’s needy. On the auspicious occasion of Sawan’s last Monday, Khan Sir declared his plan to establish dialysis centres and blood banks in every district of Bihar. This is a major expansion of his public service work beyond the field of education.

Khan Sir, who has gained fame among youth for his simple teaching style and accessibility, now intends to ease the burden of medical expenses for kidney patients across Bihar. According to his announcement, advanced dialysis machines from Germany have already been ordered and the groundwork for setting up these centres is underway. Khan Sir explained that dialysis treatments are, at present, largely unaffordable for the underprivileged, with costs reaching as high as Rs 50,000 per month per patient. His goal is to offer this critical service at very low or even no cost. Therefore, patients will no longer be forced to sell land or valuables for treatment, nor travel long distances to cities like Patna for care.

In addition to dialysis centres, Khan Sir’s project includes the installation of modern blood banks in every district. For this, high-tech equipment is being sourced from Japan. The first such blood bank will be launched on the first day of Navratri. Khan Sir emphasised that rural patients and those from outside major cities often struggle the most to obtain blood during emergencies. He has witnessed many families breaking down due to the shortage of blood for critical patients, sometimes losing their loved ones purely due to lack of resources. This inspired him to take up the responsibility to ensure blood is available across the state.

His ambition does not stop here. In future stages, Khan Sir aims to transform these centres into full-fledged hospitals, providing world-class facilities and medicines at government-approved rates. A special hospital is expected to be inaugurated by Diwali, and plans are also underway for a modern diagnostic centre equipped with the latest German machines by Chhath festival. The teacher stressed that this is his way of giving back to the society that has supported him over the years. He added that saving one person not only saves an individual, but also upholds the wellbeing of entire families.

Khan Sir said that this initiative is in line with Indian philosophy, especially the belief that the entire world is one family. He promised that all communities, regardless of background, would be able to access these services. By rolling out new medical services on each festival, he aims to combine the spirit of celebration with concrete steps to improve Bihar’s healthcare.

Through these bold steps, Khan Sir is set to become a true messiah for Bihar’s poor, bringing hope to thousands of families in need of affordable life-saving treatment.

TIME magazine has unveiled its first-ever list of the 100 Most Influential People in Philanthropy for 2025, recognising individuals who are transforming communities worldwide through their vision, generosity, and commitment to social change. The list features a diverse group of leaders, from business magnates and sports icons to artists and activists, who are redefining the meaning of impactful giving in a changing world.

The inaugural list includes philanthropists from 28 countries, reflecting a global movement where private individuals and foundations are stepping in to address urgent social issues, especially as governments and institutions face increasing challenges. This year’s honourees are celebrated for their bold initiatives in education, health, climate action, social equity, and more.

Indian Philanthropists on the TIME100 List

India’s presence on the TIME100 Philanthropy 2025 list is marked by four distinguished names: Mukesh Ambani, Nita Ambani, Azim Premji, and Nikhil Kamath. Mukesh and Nita Ambani, through the Reliance Foundation, have made significant contributions in education, healthcare, disaster response, and sports, donating ₹407 crore (about $48 million) in 2024 alone. Their efforts have empowered millions across the country, with Nita Ambani playing a key role in promoting women’s sports and rural development.

Azim Premji, founder of Wipro, is recognised for his transformative work in public education. As the first Indian to sign the Giving Pledge, he has committed over $29 billion to his foundation, which supports over 8 million children and operates hundreds of teacher learning centres and childcare centres across India. His foundation also plays a vital role in shaping education policy and supporting girls’ education through scholarships.

Nikhil Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha, represents the new generation of Indian philanthropists. He is the youngest Indian to sign the Giving Pledge and is known for his work through the Rainmatter Foundation and the Young India Philanthropic Pledge (YIPP), focusing on climate action, digital education, and youth empowerment.

Global Leaders Who Made the Cut

The TIME100 Philanthropy list features a host of internationally renowned figures who are making a difference across continents. David Beckham, the former footballer, is honoured for his continued advocacy and work as a champion of change, particularly in supporting children and health initiatives. Michael Bloomberg, named the biggest donor of 2024, is recognised for his large-scale contributions to public health, education, and climate action. Oprah Winfrey is celebrated for her decades-long commitment to female education and empowerment, while Melinda French Gates continues to focus on improving the lives of women, girls, and families worldwide.

Warren Buffett, one of the world’s most respected investors, is credited with reshaping the landscape of modern philanthropy through his leadership and the Giving Pledge, encouraging billionaires to commit a majority of their wealth to charitable causes. Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, are acknowledged for their work in mental health, early childhood development, and community well-being.

Other notable names include Dolly Parton, known for her support of literacy and disaster relief; Ken Griffin, for high-impact giving in education and science; MacKenzie Scott, for her transformative, unrestricted donations to hundreds of organisations; Aliko Dangote, for his efforts to improve health and economic opportunities in Africa; and Alice L. Walton, for funding art and holistic health initiatives.

The list also features innovators and leaders like Michael Dell and Susan Dell, Reed Hastings and Patty Quillin, Steve Ballmer and Connie Ballmer, and Jack Ma, who are leveraging their business success for social good. In the field of science and technology, Patrick Collison, Jeff Atwood, and Tim Gill are recognised for their philanthropic work in accelerating scientific progress and supporting LGBTQ+ rights.

Artists and entertainers such as Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ayesha Curry and Stephen Curry, Eric Church, Billie Jean King, Richard Curtis, and Lenny Henry are also celebrated for using their platforms and resources to champion education, disaster relief, and social justice.

The Spirit of Modern Philanthropy

TIME’s editorial team emphasises that the new leaders in philanthropy are not only giving generously but are also eager to see immediate and measurable impact. Many, like Austrian heiress Marlene Engelhorn and Dustin Moskovitz of Good Ventures, are experimenting with new models of giving, including participatory grantmaking and data-driven philanthropy.

The TIME100 Philanthropy list is a testament to the power of individual and collective action in shaping a better world. Whether through large-scale donations, grassroots initiatives, or innovative approaches, the honourees are setting new benchmarks for purposeful giving and inspiring others to follow their lead.

As the world faces complex challenges, the influence of these philanthropists—Indian and global alike—demonstrates that true leadership is measured not just by wealth, but by the vision and compassion with which it is used to uplift humanity.
