Authorities in Nepal have suspended all public transport services connecting to and from Kathmandu following landslides triggered by continuous rainfall. This disruption began on Friday, 25 September 2026, after heavy rains affected the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding regions from Thursday. The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office reported that public vehicles are currently grounded due to blocked routes on key highways.

Highway Closures and Restrictions Imposed

The landslides have specifically impacted movement on the Prithvi Highway and the BP Highway. The Prithvi Highway connects Kathmandu with the provinces of Bagmati and Gandaki, while the BP Highway provides a link to Madhesh province and eastern Nepal. Superintendent of Police Naresh Raj Subedi confirmed that the disruption necessitated authorities to impose overnight restrictions on the Kavrepalanchok section of the BP Highway as a precautionary measure, based on forecasts of worsening weather conditions.

Individuals are advised against using this road between 5 pm and 5 am until the following Sunday. Chief District Officer Gopal Kumar Adhikari indicated that an evaluation would take place before determining if daytime closures should also be enforced in light of ongoing adverse weather.

In Chitwan, both the Prithvi Highway and the Narayanghat-Muglin road have been shut indefinitely due to landslides and the heightened risk of further incidents after ongoing rain. According to Chief District Officer Ganesh Aryal, initial traffic restrictions were enacted overnight from 8 pm on Thursday to 5 am on Friday, but these were subsequently extended as rainfall persisted. Multiple landslides have occurred along the Chitwan section of the Prithvi Highway.

Monitoring the Situation and Safety Measures

Reports from neighbouring Dhading highlight landslides at seven key locations, including Krishnabhir and Parewabhir. To manage the situation effectively, long-distance public vehicles have been redirected to the New Bus Park in Gongabu, Kathmandu, in an effort to mitigate congestion and ensure passenger safety during ongoing clearing operations.

Light vehicles continue to operate between Kathmandu and Hetauda in Bagmati province via the alternative Pharping route. However, as river water levels rise, traffic authorities have cautioned motorists against parking along river corridors to prevent accidents and enhance safety.

The Federation of Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs has urged drivers and transport operators to exercise caution and liaise closely with security agencies while conducting services amid the prevailing risk of landslides and heavy rainfall. Additionally, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has alerted the public to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel, especially during night hours, as heavy rainfall is forecasted across various regions of the country from 24 to 28 September 2026.

Implications and Ongoing Cautions

The suspension of public transport to and from Kathmandu, along with highway closures in Chitwan and restrictions on the BP Highway, underscore the extensive impact of recent weather conditions. Authorities remain engaged in monitoring developments and are providing ongoing advisories for public safety throughout Nepal.

As the situation evolves, continuous updates from local authorities and transport organisations are expected to guide residents and travellers. The context of this weather-related disruption demonstrates the challenges faced in managing transport infrastructure during severe weather events in the Himalayan region.

An Air India flight that was set to travel to Kathmandu had to turn back to Delhi due to a suspected technical issue. The flight had reportedly taken off but encountered difficulties shortly after departure, prompting the crew to make the decision to return safely to Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Immediate Actions Taken by the Authorities

Passengers were initially given the option to rebook their flights or wait for further updates. Air India has since been coordinating with affected passengers to provide alternative travel arrangements. The airline expressed its commitment to safety and reported that the well-being of its passengers is a top priority.

This incident has raised concerns regarding aircraft safety protocols, which are essential for airlines to uphold at all times. Users of social media platforms immediately began sharing their experiences and seeking more information about the situation. The airline has urged them to rely on official channels for updates.

Context of Flight Operations and Safety Measures

According to industry experts, technical issues in aviation can arise from various factors, including weather conditions and mechanical failures. Airlines typically implement strict safety measures to mitigate the risks associated with such incidents, ensuring thorough routine inspections and maintenance practices.

Air India, like other major carriers, regularly conducts checks on its fleet to comply with aviation safety standards mandated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This incident will likely lead to a review of safety protocols and further evaluations of aircraft performance as part of a standard procedure after a technical anomaly is detected.

As per aviation regulations, any technical issue that requires a flight to return to its point of origin must be reported, and the flight logs are scrutinised to prevent recurrence. Regulatory bodies frequently work with airlines to assess and enhance operational safety, which is aimed at fostering passenger confidence in air travel.

Future Implications and Passenger Experiences

The return of the Air India flight has stirred discussions about the reliability of air travel. Passengers are left weighing their options when making future travel plans, especially when flying with airlines that may encounter similar setbacks. This incident will undoubtedly contribute to ongoing debates within the aviation sector regarding customer service in the wake of technical emergencies.

Moreover, the experience highlights the importance of communication from airlines during unscheduled events. Passengers expect timely and accurate information regarding their flights and any disruptions. Air India has stated that it will make every effort to ensure that the travel plans of affected passengers are accommodated as seamlessly as possible.

Looking ahead, both airlines and aviation authorities will need to continue monitoring and improving their response strategies to technical issues. The balance between operational efficiency and passenger safety remains crucial as aviation continues to recover and adapt in the wake of recent years’ challenges.

Members of Nepal’s LGBTQ+ community came together in Kathmandu on Saturday to conduct a candlelight vigil in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the recent flash floods. The gathering served as a moment of reflection and solidarity with the families affected by the tragedy, which has significantly impacted central Nepal.

The vigil followed a devastating announcement as the death toll rose to 734 by Sunday, with almost 2,500 individuals reported missing. These figures highlight the severity of the disaster, with rescue operations ongoing for the fifth consecutive day as teams searched affected areas.

Impact of the Flash Floods on Local Communities

The floods, occurring on Wednesday, have had catastrophic effects across several districts in Nepal. The disaster was reportedly triggered by an ice-rock avalanche resulting from a glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border. This incident led to torrents of water, mud, and debris sweeping through towns and villages, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and hydropower facilities.

Community members at the vigil were led by the Blue Diamond Society, which has been a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in Nepal. They expressed their collective grief through a moment of silence, lighting candles in tribute to the lives lost. One participant shared with PTI Videos that the gathering aimed to provide a space for communal mourning and hope for the safe return of those still missing.

In an act of solidarity, the Blue Diamond Society cancelled the 24th Nepal Pride Parade and GaiJatra Celebration, which were originally scheduled for August 29. In light of the floods and the challenges faced by communities, the organisation opted to change their plans to focus on remembrance rather than celebration.

Rescue Operations and Ongoing Search Efforts

Rescue operations have been extensive, covering all eight of the districts impacted by the floods. Teams have been working tirelessly, aiming to recover as many bodies as possible while searching for the missing. The circumstances of this tragedy have garnered national attention, with many people mourning those who have passed away as they wait for updates on missing individuals.

The floods caused by the avalanche have devastated infrastructure, wiping out entire towns and damaging critical facilities such as hydropower plants. As recovery efforts proceed, the government and various organisations are coordinating their responses to effectively address the needs of affected communities.

As residents and officials grapple with the aftermath of this calamity, the vigils and moments of solidarity from groups such as the LGBTQ+ community highlight the collective resilience in the face of adversity. The ongoing search efforts reflect the urgent need to support families and individuals impacted by these floods.

On Wednesday, Nepal Police reported the arrest of two Indian nationals at Tribhuvan International Airport, where they were found in possession of 18 kilograms of marijuana produced in Thailand. The police apprehended Sanjiv Kumar, aged 36, and Ravi Kumar, aged 26, both hailing from Punjab, during a routine check.

The arrests took place on Tuesday evening in the arrival area of the airport. A team from the Anti-Narcotic Drugs Bureau commenced checks on incoming passengers, prompting the two men to allegedly attempt to evade detection. However, they were apprehended by security personnel before they could escape.

Authorities also confiscated two mobile phones, two passports, and four bags belonging to the suspects. This significant seizure highlights ongoing efforts by the Nepalese police to combat drug trafficking in the region.

Travel Details of the Suspects

Reports indicate that both individuals arrived in Kathmandu from Thailand, transiting through Hong Kong. They were on a Cathay Pacific flight, which landed at the airport shortly before their arrest. Their travel route raises questions about the origin of the marijuana, which is reportedly a notable issue in regional drug trafficking.

The apprehension came at a time when authorities in Nepal are increasing vigilance at major entry points, particularly in response to rising concerns about drug smuggling. The arrests are a part of a broader crackdown aimed at preventing the transit of illegal substances through the country.

Officials have stressed the need to enhance cooperation with international agencies to tackle narcotics effectively, given the complexities involved in drug trafficking patterns in the region. The recent incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating this global issue.

Legal Implications and Next Steps

Following their arrest, both Sanjiv Kumar and Ravi Kumar are now under police custody while investigations into the case proceed. They are expected to face charges related to drug possession and trafficking, which carry significant legal consequences as per Nepali law.

The legal framework in Nepal provides stringent penalties for drug-related offenses, aiming to deter such activities. Authorities are working to gather more information regarding the suspects’ connections and any potential networks involved in drug smuggling.

As investigations unfold, the police are also likely to coordinate with Indian law enforcement agencies to explore the broader implications of the case. This could involve checking for any links to larger drug trafficking syndicates operating between the two countries.

Broader Context of Drug Trafficking in the Region

The incident at Tribhuvan International Airport illustrates the ongoing challenges of drug trafficking in South Asia, where various routes are exploited by traffickers. Nepal’s geographical position makes it a critical transit point for drug shipments originating from other countries, including Thailand and Myanmar.

The illegal drug trade has far-reaching effects on public health and safety and poses a significant challenge to law enforcement agencies. The Nepalese government has expressed a commitment to enhancing drug control measures and increasing public awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.

As national and international efforts continue to combat drug trafficking, authorities remain vigilant in monitoring entry points and implementing stricter regulations. This case serves as an important reminder of the persistent struggle against narcotics in the region and the need for collaborative approaches to tackle such issues effectively.

Gen Z

Following the arrest of former Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, supporters organized protests in multiple locations throughout Kathmandu. The demonstrators gathered to voice their discontent and publicly expressed their anger by burning copies of the report submitted by the commission investigating the ‘Gen Z’ movement. The commission’s findings implicated Oli in the violence surrounding the September 2025 protests, which ultimately led to his ousting from office.

Details of the Arrest

Oli was taken into custody early on Saturday in connection with a culpable homicide case tied to the violent suppression of the Gen Z protests. Alongside him, former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak of the Nepali Congress party was also arrested. The commission, established by the interim election government, suggested that both Oli and others should face prosecution for their involvement in the violence, asserting that Oli failed to prevent the police firing that resulted in the deaths of at least 19 protesters on the first day of demonstrations.

Health Concerns and Political Reactions

Following his arrest, the 74-year-old Oli, who has undergone two kidney transplants, was admitted to a hospital in Kathmandu for medical evaluations. The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) labeled the arrest a politically motivated act and called for an emergency meeting to discuss their response. Supporters expressed their frustration by setting fire to the Carqui Commission report near the UML central office in Chyasal, additionally igniting tires to signify their dissent. Notably, police presence at these protest sites remained minimal.

Dynamic Political Landscape in Nepal

In a concurrent political shift, rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah, better known as Balen, recently took the oath of office as the youngest Prime Minister after being unanimously elected leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party. Balen, who defeated Oli in the Jhapa-5 constituency during the recent general elections, marks a significant change as the Rastriya Swatantra Party gained a majority in the House of Representatives. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended congratulations to Balen Shah, expressing hopes for stronger bilateral relations between India and Nepal.

Condemnation from Political Leaders

Oli’s arrest has drawn sharp criticism from leaders of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist). Secretary Mahesh Basnet described the incident as “political revenge” and accused the new government led by Balen Shah of bias. The party called for nationwide protests, including demonstrations at district headquarters and the formal submission of protest letters to officials. Other political figures also raised alarms regarding the arrest, with Arjun Narsingha KC advocating for a “neutral and transparent” investigation and labeling the previous findings as “insufficient.” Ganesh Shah asserted that due process must be adhered to, while Kamal Thapa cautioned against potential “conflict and confrontation.” The current government acted swiftly after determining to implement the investigation report, intensifying the existing tensions.

Ongoing Developments

As the newly formed government prepares its cabinet, the situation remains fluid with ongoing legal proceedings related to the Gen Z protests. The political landscape of Nepal is seeing shifts that are indicative of deeper issues as protests against Oli’s arrest continue and further developments unfold.

Amid escalating political unrest and the resignation of key national leaders, Nepal’s Gen Z movement has chosen former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the interim head of government. In a large-scale virtual meeting involving over 5,000 young participants, Karki emerged as the preferred candidate after Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah failed to respond to outreach efforts.

Gen Z Demands Accountability and Reform

The virtual assembly was organized following widespread protests over corruption, government repression, and the deaths of demonstrators. Youth representatives emphasized the need for a neutral and competent interim leader to oversee the nation during this transitional period. Karki reportedly requested a minimum of 1,000 written endorsements to accept the role, but quickly received more than 2,500, showing strong grassroots backing.

While Karki emerged as the consensus choice, several other public figures were considered during the discussion, including Kulman Ghising, head of the Nepal Electricity Authority; youth leader Sagar Dhakal; Dharan Mayor Harka Sampang; and YouTuber Random Nepali. The latter expressed conditional interest, saying he would step in only if no other capable candidate accepted the role.

Violent Unrest Forces Government Resignations

The Gen Z-led initiative follows days of violent protests across the country. Demonstrators stormed and torched key government buildings, including the Prime Minister’s Office, the Supreme Court, and Parliament. Over 20 people, including Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, wife of former PM Jhalanath Khanal, were killed. Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel was assaulted on the streets by angry protesters.

Sushila Karki, 72, holds a historic place in Nepal’s judiciary as the country’s first female Chief Justice. Appointed in 2016, she is known for her fearless rulings, including cases on transitional justice, electoral disputes, and women’s rights to citizenship. A civic figure with no political ties, Karki is widely respected for her integrity and commitment to justice.

What’s Next?

If Karki formally accepts the role, she is expected to first hold talks with Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel and then seek approval from President Ram Chandra Poudel. Gen Z participants are continuing to vote in a 24-hour online poll on Discord, with Karki maintaining a commanding lead in support.

Thousands of young Nepalis took to the streets of Kathmandu on Monday in a dramatic and deadly protest against the government’s sweeping ban on 26 popular social media platforms. The protest, largely spearheaded by Generation Z, escalated into violent clashes with police, resulting in at least nine deaths and over 42 injuries, according to Nepal Police.

In a statement, Nepal police said, “Nine people have lost their lives as the Protest turned violent in Kathmandu as people staged a massive protest against the ban on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and other social media sites, leading to clashes between police and protesters.”

From Peaceful March to Chaos

The protests began peacefully around 9 AM in Maitighar, where demonstrators gathered waving national flags and singing the national anthem. Carrying placards with slogans like “Shut down corruption, not social media” and “Unban social media,” the crowd expressed widespread anger not just over the recent digital blackout but also decades of entrenched corruption, nepotism, and political favoritism.

Although the rally had received prior approval from the Kathmandu District Administration Office and was supported by civic group Hami Nepal, tensions escalated when protesters attempted to storm the Parliament premises. Police responded with water cannons, tear gas, rubber bullets, and later, live ammunition.

Deadly Violence in New Baneshwar

One of the worst confrontations occurred in New Baneshwar, where police opened fire on demonstrators who breached restricted zones. One protester succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Civil Hospital, and more fatalities were confirmed later in the evening. Several of the deceased have not yet been identified, authorities said.

Over 40 people sustained injuries and are being treated at Civil Hospital, Everest Hospital, and other medical centers. Hami Nepal also set up a first-aid camp at Maitighar for minor injuries.

“We were triggered by the social media ban, but that is not the only reason we are gathered here,” student Yujan Rajbhandari, 24, told news agency AFP. “We are protesting against corruption that has been institutionalised in Nepal.”

Another student, Ikshama Tumrok, 20, said she was protesting against the “authoritarian attitude” of the government. “We want to see change. Others have endured this, but it has to end with our generation,” she told AFP.

Curfew Imposed as Protest Spreads

Following the violence, authorities imposed curfew orders in key areas of Kathmandu, including Baneshwar, Singha Durbar, Baluwatar (PM’s residence), Lainchaur (Vice-President’s residence), and Shital Niwas (President’s house). The curfew, effective from 12:30 PM to 10 PM, was imposed under Section 6 of the Local Administration Act to prevent further escalation.

Meanwhile, similar demonstrations erupted in other cities like Damak, where protesters burned an effigy of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and tried to storm the municipal office. Police used tear gas and rubber bullets there as well, critically injuring one protester.

Why the Ban?

The government enacted the ban last Friday after 26 platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, WhatsApp, and LinkedIn, failed to register with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. A recent cabinet meeting, chaired by Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung, mandated platforms to register locally, appoint grievance and compliance officers, and establish a Nepali contact point.

While some platforms like TikTok, Viber, Nimbuzz, and WeTalk have complied, most global giants have yet to begin the registration process. Officials claim the ban will be lifted once the companies meet the regulatory requirements.

“A while ago, the police fired bullets which did not hit me but hit a friend of mine standing behind me. He was shot in the hand. The firing is still going on and we can hear gunfire from inside the parliament as well. My friend, who was standing on the road, was shot in the head. The police are firing indiscriminately, aiming above the knees. Are they allowed to do this?..,” a protester told the media.

Youth Outrage Over Corruption and Censorship

Many protesters said the ban was only the tipping point for a broader wave of frustration. “The ban sparked this, but we’re here because we’re tired of corruption, nepotism, and censorship,” said Yujan Rajbhandari, a 24-year-old student.

Another protester, 20-year-old Ikshama Tumrok, called the government’s actions “authoritarian” and said, “We want this to end with our generation.” Videos contrasting politicians’ children flaunting luxury lifestyles with the daily struggles of ordinary Nepalis have gone viral on TikTok, fuelling further outrage.

“We have imposed a curfew that will remain in effect until 10 pm local time (1615 GMT) to bring the situation under control after protesters turned violent,” Reuters quoted Kathmandu district office spokesperson Muktiram Rijal as saying.

Political Fallout and Public Support

Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a popular independent leader who rose to prominence through online campaigning, voiced support for the protests on Facebook. “I cannot participate due to my position, but I extend my full support,” he said.

Prime Minister Oli, who recently mocked Gen Z at a public event, has yet to comment on the fatalities. Meanwhile, the government maintains that the ban is necessary to safeguard national sovereignty and enforce accountability.

“I heard of a planned ‘Gen Z rebellion.’ We are not against platforms or social networks, we are against lawlessness, arrogance, and belittling our country,” Oli said.

“They replied, ‘We don’t know your constitution.’ Then intellectuals complain: four jobs lost. But are four jobs bigger than national self-respect? For self-respect, maybe four jobs go for four days, but new ones will come. They cannot be operators, managers, and consumers all at once,” Oli stated.

A Turning Point for Nepal?

This week’s protests represent a pivotal moment in Nepal’s political landscape. What started as a movement against digital censorship has evolved into a larger youth-driven campaign challenging the nation’s systemic corruption and governance failures.

Whether the government will back down or clamp down further remains to be seen.
