Five Indian seafarers were safely rescued after a Kuwait-flagged crude oil tanker, the MT Kazimah III, was reportedly struck by a projectile while navigating through the Strait of Hormuz. The Indian Embassy in Oman announced the successful evacuation on Friday, confirming that all five individuals were brought safely ashore following the incident. The embassy expressed appreciation for the assistance provided by Omani authorities during the rescue operation.

The embassy’s communication, shared on the social media platform X, indicated that the immediate response coordinated by the mission facilitated the safe removal of the crew from the distressed vessel. The situation is being closely monitored, although the embassy has not disclosed the specifics regarding the entity responsible for the projectile strike or the nature of the attack itself.

The MT Kazimah III, under the Kuwaiti flag, was en route to Lome in Togo and was carrying a cargo of crude oil at the time of the incident. The details surrounding the attack remain unclear, but it has raised concerns regarding maritime safety in the area.

India’s Vigilance Over Seafarer Safety

This incident has prompted heightened scrutiny from Indian authorities regarding the safety of Indian nationals employed in maritime operations, particularly in the Persian Gulf region. Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, noted earlier this week that over 4,500 Indian seafarers are currently engaged on various commercial vessels operating in these waters. This figure underscores the significant presence of Indian personnel in maritime activities in the region.

Among these seafarers, approximately 163 individuals serve on twelve cargo vessels, which include both Indian-flagged and foreign-flagged ships. The ongoing monitoring efforts are aimed at ensuring the welfare of these seafarers and their safe passage across these volatile waters. The Ministry of Shipping is working in collaboration with Indian diplomatic missions and local authorities to keep track of vessel movements and the conditions of Indian maritime workers.

Jaiswal further assured that the Indian government remains committed to the safety and well-being of its seafaring community abroad. Embassies and other involved stakeholders are prepared to step in and provide assistance whenever necessary. His statements reflect a broader commitment to the welfare of Indian nationals working in challenging environments globally.

Concerns Over Maritime Security in the Region

The projectile strike incident raises significant concerns about the security of commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route for global oil transport. Incidents like this are becoming increasingly frequent amid rising geopolitical tensions in the region, impacting both commercial operations and the safety of personnel aboard these vessels. This underscores the need for enhanced security measures and diplomatic efforts to address such threats.

As tensions persist, maritime authorities and governments continue to assess risks and implement strategies to enhance safety protocols for seafarers. The current environment necessitates ongoing vigilance and swift response mechanisms to protect those who work at sea, ensuring their safety while navigating through high-risk areas.

The Indian government’s pledge to safeguard its citizens working abroad is evident through the proactive measures undertaken by various ministries, indicating serious attention to their safety amid prevailing uncertainties. Cooperation with local governments and international maritime organisations remains essential for ensuring the continued safe operation of commercial vessels in these waters.

India is actively overseeing the welfare of more than 4,500 Indian seafarers currently serving on commercial ships in the Persian Gulf. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported that among this group, there are 163 seafarers aboard 12 operational cargo vessels. This information was disclosed by MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal in a recent media briefing.

Jaiswal outlined the presence of Indian maritime personnel in the region, indicating that six vessels flagged under India and six foreign-flagged cargo ships destined for India are traversing the waters of the Persian Gulf. The monitoring efforts are part of a broader initiative to ensure the safety of Indian nationals working abroad.

In total, Jaiswal confirmed the presence of 12 ships, with the aforementioned number of Indian seafarers onboard. The MEA remains vigilant in its efforts to protect these individuals through its diplomatic missions and local partners, enhancing the monitoring of vessel movements.

Collaboration for Seafarers’ Welfare

The Ministry of Shipping, in collaboration with Indian embassies and relevant local stakeholders, is conducting constant surveillance on the movement of these commercial vessels. Jaiswal reiterated the ministry’s commitment to the well-being of their maritime workforce, indicating that assistance is provided whenever necessary to ensure their welfare.

“Our Ministry of Shipping continues to monitor the movement of these ships and is looking at the well-being of all these seafarers,” he stated. “As and when required, through our embassies and other stakeholders, they do the needful for their well-being and welfare.”

This proactive approach highlights New Delhi’s ongoing dedication to safeguarding the interests of its seafaring community in light of ongoing global maritime threats.

Heightened Maritime Security Risks

The announcement from the MEA arrives at a time of increasing security threats in global maritime corridors, notably in regions such as the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, and Black Sea, where international merchant vessels have encountered persistent assaults. These developments have raised alarms within the maritime industry.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the concerning situation during his address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 23. He condemned acts of violence against commercial vessels, acknowledging the tragic loss of Indian lives at sea amidst ongoing regional conflicts.

Jaishankar emphasised the emerging challenges in maritime security, stating, “New challenges in the maritime domain have added to longstanding ones on land.” He noted that various attacks on commercial shipping continue to pose dangers to seafarers from multiple nations.

In response to these threats, Jaishankar announced India’s coalition with Liberia and 23 partner nations to raise global awareness and reinforce the security of commercial shipping routes. He advocated for stringent adherence to international law to safeguard the maritime domain.

“We must ensure that the safety and security of shipping and seafarers is never compromised,” Jaishankar urged, highlighting the need for immediate restraint and de-escalation in the Gulf region to protect civilian crews and maintain the flow of energy supplies and international trade.

India has expressed its strong opposition to attacks on commercial shipping and seafarers amidst ongoing conflicts in the Gulf. This statement was made during the high-level 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Saturday by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. He highlighted that such acts are “simply unacceptable” and called for restraint from all parties involved in the current hostilities.

During his address to the UNGA, Jaishankar acknowledged India’s deep concern regarding the ongoing violence in the region. He urged all parties to lower tensions and protect civilians, while also ensuring the uninterrupted flow of energy and commerce. The minister underscored the pressing need to address both the new maritime challenges and existing issues on land.

Jaishankar cited the alarming trend of targeting commercial vessels and seafarers in international waters, which he described as a significant risk. He noted the tragic loss of lives among Indian seafarers and their international counterparts due to these conflicts, stating that the situation is entirely unacceptable.

International Maritime Initiative Announced

In response to the mounting threats faced by maritime operations, India has teamed up with Liberia and 23 other nations to initiate a campaign aimed at mobilising global sentiment against these unabated attacks. Jaishankar stressed the importance of security for commercial shipping and the need for strict adherence to international law as essential components of this initiative.

On Friday, Jaishankar and his Liberian counterpart announced the formation of the Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers. This maritime initiative is a direct response to the persistent attacks on merchant vessels that have been reported in the region.

Referencing specific incidents, Jaishankar drew attention to the recent attack on the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged bulk carrier MV Cape Dao in the Gulf of Oman, which resulted in the death of an Indian sailor. He also mentioned the earlier strike on the Panama-flagged oil tanker El Gaia while it was passing through the Strait of Hormuz, which left an Indian crew member missing.

Broader Context of Maritime Security Risks

The threats to shipping and seafarers are not isolated; ongoing conflicts worldwide have increased risks in critical maritime zones, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. Areas such as the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Bab-el-Mandeb, Black Sea, and Somali waters are now particularly perilous for merchant shipping operations.

Many Indian seafarers are employed on both Indian-flagged and foreign-flagged vessels that traverse these waters, thus they are exposed to rising security challenges. India’s focus at the UNGA highlights the urgent need for a concerted international effort to safeguard maritime traffic and ensure the safety of all involved in this vital sector.

India’s stance at the United Nations reinforces a commitment to protecting maritime routes and the individuals who work within them. The government has reiterated that attacks on shipping must cease and that the safety of seafarers should be a priority for the global community.

India has launched a new maritime safety initiative with Liberia, addressing the alarming number of attacks on seafarers and civilian vessels. This announcement was made on Friday during a high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly, where External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Liberia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Sara Beysolow Nyanti co-chaired the inaugural meeting of the ‘Group of Friends on Safety & Security of Shipping & Seafarers’.

The primary aim of this group is to enhance maritime trade safety and security. Jaishankar highlighted the growing concern over escalating assaults on civilian shipping across various regions, including the Black Sea and the Gulf. He condemned these attacks as “indefensible” and “unacceptable,” emphasising the need for the international community to unite in deterring such actions. This initiative aims to foster collaboration among significant global stakeholders in maritime safety.

According to Jaishankar, the group will involve major ship-owning nations, countries with extensive ship registries, and key contributors to the seafaring workforce. He pointed out recent incidents, including the attack on the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged MV Cape Dao in the Gulf of Oman, which led to the loss of an Indian sailor’s life. He also referred to the attack on the Panama-flagged El Gaia while navigating the Strait of Hormuz, which resulted in another Indian crew member going missing.

Addressing Challenges Faced by Seafarers

During the meeting, Jaishankar spoke of the broader threats currently faced by seafarers, exacerbated by factors such as prolonged confinement aboard vessels and difficulties with crew changes. This includes the emotional distress resulting from separation from families, which has become increasingly common amid global maritime challenges. He accentuated the necessity for a unified international response to address these complex issues despite existing frameworks aimed at protecting seafarers’ rights.

Furthermore, Jaishankar referred to a proposal made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the recently held BRICS Leaders’ Summit, advocating for the establishment of a seafarers emergency support network. This network aims to connect maritime authorities and embassies to facilitate necessary assistance, including distress alerts and medical support for seafarers in crisis.

In responses to media inquiries following the announcement, Jaishankar condemned the recent spate of attacks as not just legally indefensible but also morally unacceptable. Highlighting the urgency of the situation, he called for an immediate cessation of violence against commercial shipping, stressing that such acts must not continue.

Global Trade Impact and Collaborative Efforts

Jaishankar elaborated on the significance of maritime shipping in global trade, asserting that it constitutes approximately four-fifths of the worldwide commerce valued at $35 trillion last year. He asserted that the India-Liberia collaboration seeks to draw increased global attention to issues surrounding seafarers and the shipping industry as a whole. This partnership is posed to strengthen cooperative efforts in maritime security.

The initiative aims to serve as a voluntary, inclusive platform for member states to enhance bilateral and multilateral cooperation. It will encourage sharing of experiences and facilitate concrete collaborations. Jaishankar noted that the group’s discussions will address vital topics concerning the shipping sector and the welfare of seafarers.

Lastly, he confirmed that participants from the group would work together to promote maritime safety issues through various international forums, including the United Nations, the International Maritime Organisation, and the International Labour Organisation. The newly formed group represents a concerted effort to elevate the discourse on seafarer safety amid escalating threats in maritime environments.

India on Tuesday strongly condemned the attack on Indian-flagged commercial vessel MSV Faize Noore Oliya, which sank in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen, and confirmed that all 13 Indian nationals on board had been rescued.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the Indian Embassy in Riyadh is coordinating with Yemeni authorities to ensure the safety and security of the rescued crew. The government also called for an end to attacks on commercial shipping and urged the restoration of safe navigation through international waterways.

MEA Confirms Rescue of Indian Crew

In a statement, the MEA condemned the attack on the vessel, which sank on August 4 after coming under attack in the Red Sea.

“We condemn the attack on the Indian flagged commercial vessel, MSV Faize Noore Oliya, that sank in the Red Sea, off the coast of Yemen on August 4, 2026,” the ministry said.

Confirming the rescue of the Indian crew members, it added, “All 13 Indian nationals have been rescued.”

The ministry said the Indian Embassy in Riyadh is closely monitoring developments and coordinating with Yemeni authorities regarding the welfare of the crew.

“We thank the Yemeni authorities for their support,” the MEA said.

India Calls for Safe Navigation

Expressing concern over the security situation in the region, the ministry said repeated attacks on commercial vessels were a matter of serious concern.

“The continuing incidents of attacks on commercial shipping in the region are deeply worrisome,” the statement said.

The MEA urged an immediate end to such attacks and called for the restoration of unrestricted maritime trade in accordance with international law.

“The targeting of commercial shipping in the region must end, and free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through the international waterways in the region, in keeping with international law, must be restored at the earliest,” it added.

Sonowal Condemns ‘Unprovoked’ Attack

Earlier in the day, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said India strongly condemned what he described as an “unprovoked attack” on the Indian mechanised sailing vessel.

In a post on X, Sonowal said the vessel had been struck by a projectile near Yemeni waters, causing it to capsize and sink.

“India strongly condemns this unprovoked attack on the defenseless mechanised sailing vessel. The safety of our people is our supreme priority & I am relieved to inform that ALL 14 seafarers (including 13 Indians) have been safely rescued by the Yemeni Coast Guard and brought to the Port of Mokha,” he said.

The minister also said he had directed the Director General Maritime Administration (DGMA) to coordinate with relevant agencies to ensure the safety of Indian seafarers operating in the region and provide all necessary assistance to the rescued crew.

Yemeni Forces Conduct Rescue Operation

According to Anadolu News Agency, citing Yemen’s government-aligned National Resistance Forces (NRF), the vessel was attacked about 13 nautical miles south of Al Hudaydah before sinking.

The Yemeni Navy and Coast Guard subsequently carried out a joint rescue operation, bringing all 14 crew members, comprising 13 Indian nationals and one Yemeni national, safely ashore.

The rescued crew received medical assistance, and no casualties were reported.

The NRF, led by Tareq Saleh, operates along Yemen’s western coastline near the strategically important Bab al-Mandab Strait.

Renewed Security Concerns in Red Sea

The attack comes amid renewed concerns over maritime security in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait following a resurgence of attacks targeting commercial shipping.

On July 20, Yemen’s Houthi group announced what it described as a “naval blockade” on Saudi Arabia, prompting Riyadh to warn that it would respond firmly to threats against its vessels.

The Bab al-Mandab Strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea and is one of the world’s most important international shipping routes.

The family of a Merchant Navy employee from Uttar Pradesh, who went missing from a ship near Istanbul, Turkey, has appealed to the Central and Uttar Pradesh governments for urgent intervention, saying they have not received any information about his whereabouts since July 25.

Ram Chandra Dubey, who was working as a sailor aboard a vessel near Istanbul, reportedly disappeared along with another crew member. His family alleged that the shipping company informed them about the incident a day later and has since failed to provide any meaningful updates on the search.

Family Says Contact Was Lost After July 24

Ram Chandra’s father, Ramesh Chandra Dubey, said the family last spoke to him on July 24, when he did not mention any problems and everything appeared normal.

According to him, Ram Chandra had travelled to Turkey through Deloship, a Delhi-Noida-based company, and was employed as a sailor. His initial six-month contract was extended to nine months and later prolonged by another one or two months.

“Ram Chandra had gone to Istanbul, Turkey, through the Delosis company, which is based in Delhi-Noida. He was working there on a ship as a sailor. His contract was initially for six months, but they later extended it to nine months. His nine-month contract was supposed to end on June 25th. After that, they extended his time by another month or two,” he said.

Ramesh Chandra said the family has had no contact with his son since July 25 and alleged that the company informed them about his disappearance only on July 26.

“We last spoke with him on July 24th, and everything seemed fine. Since July 25th, we haven’t heard from him. The concern, son, is that the company has only said they are missing. They didn’t even tell us on the 25th; they informed at 1:00 PM on the 26th,” he said.

Family Alleges Lack of Information From Company

The family alleged that the company has not provided clear information about the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and has instead asked them to contact other authorities.

“There’s no contact happening with the company. When we ask, they tell us to ask elsewhere. They aren’t providing any proper information. They just told us that Ram Chandra and another person named Deepak Kumar Gupta are missing from the ship; they said they are missing from the vessel,” Ramesh Chandra said.

He appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to intervene and help locate his son.

“I want immediate news of him. If we get news quickly, it will bring peace to our home. You can see his mother’s condition; everyone’s condition is bad. Through you, I am requesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, S Jaishankar, Rajnath Singh, the Home Minister, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to help find my son as soon as possible and provide us with information,” he said.

Sister Says Family Still Awaiting Updates

Ram Chandra’s elder sister, Seemakashi Pandey, said he joined Deloship on September 25, 2025, and was expected to sign off on September 12 this year after his contract was extended by two months.

She said Ram Chandra spoke to their parents on the night of July 24 and gave no indication that he was facing any difficulties.

“Everything was fine until the 24th [of July]. He spoke with our mother and father on the night of July 24th; everything was okay, and there was no mention of any trouble from his side. But when the attack happened on July 25th, it was the company’s negligence that they did not inform us that same day. They informed us the next day that such an incident had occurred and your brother, Ram Chandra Dubey, and Deepak Kumar Gupta, two persons, are missing,” she said.

Pandey said the family has remained in regular contact with the company but has only been told to remain patient while search operations continue.

“Since then, we have had no news. There is no news of my brother. We are constantly in contact with the company, but they just tell us to have patience, saying he is missing and they are searching. We don’t see any significant results from the government’s side either. They just say ‘Search and rescue operation is underway, search and rescue operation is underway.’ It has been 10 days now, sir, and there is no trace or news,” she said.

The family has urged authorities to intensify the search operation and provide regular updates on Ram Chandra Dubey’s whereabouts as efforts to trace the missing sailors continue.

The Indian Embassy in Ukraine has asserted that the well-being and safety of Indian seafarers aboard the MV AMIR1 are of utmost importance. This statement was made on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, amidst rising concerns surrounding the vessel’s current circumstances. The embassy emphasised its dedication to staying informed about developments related to the safety of Indian nationals on board.

In a post shared on X, the embassy confirmed that it is in continuous communication with relevant authorities to guarantee the security of those who are Indian nationals. Although the specifics of the situation regarding MV AMIR1 have not been revealed, the embassy has made it clear that monitoring efforts are ongoing.

This focus on safety comes as the geopolitical climate intensifies in the region, necessitating close attention to the Indian seafarers involved. The embassy’s statements illustrate its commitment to ensuring that all measures are taken to protect those in their care.

Context of Seafarers in the Black Sea Region

The issue of Indian seafarers in the Black Sea has recently garnered attention, especially following reports of attacks on commercial vessels that have been linked to the ongoing conflict in the region. On Tuesday, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, addressed queries regarding the number of Indian seafarers active in or transiting the Black Sea. He noted that India boasts one of the largest global seafaring populations, many of whom are employed on both Indian and foreign vessels.

Jaiswal acknowledged that while the specific number of Indian seafarers in the Black Sea area was not immediately available, the impact of the conflict on commercial shipping remains a serious concern. The spokesperson reiterated the importance of safeguarding seafarers, civilians, and civilian infrastructure from the ongoing violence in the region.

India’s acute awareness of its sizeable seafaring community underscores its vigilance in responding to threats faced by its nationals abroad. Authorities continue to track developments to ensure a swift response wherever necessary.

Responses to Recent Attacks and Diplomatic Engagement

Recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea have heightened tensions and led to diplomatic conversations between India and Ukraine. Following a notable incident involving the MV OMORFI, which resulted in the fatality of an Indian seafarer, the Ministry of External Affairs summoned Ukraine’s Ambassador to India, Oleksandr Polishchuk. During this meeting, New Delhi expressed its serious concerns regarding the attack.

The MEA spokesperson condemned the recent violence and reiterated that commercial shipping and its personnel should never be targeted. India’s position remains steadfast in asserting that safety and security for seafarers and civilian entities must be prioritised and respected during conflicts.

Additionally, the embassy mentioned another incident involving a merchant vessel, MV Ragnar, which was reportedly hit while docked in Odesa. Of the four Indian nationals aboard, the embassy confirmed that two crew members were safe, while information regarding the remaining two is still being awaited. These developments are being closely monitored by the embassy and the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Indian Embassy in Ukraine is currently focused on the developments concerning MV AMIR1, a merchant ship with thirteen Indian seafarers aboard. Reports indicate that the vessel is encountering ongoing threats from drones and missiles near Ukraine’s Black Sea coast. The embassy has stated that it is maintaining constant communication with pertinent authorities to ensure the well-being of the crew members on board.

Recent Incidents Heighten Concerns

This situation arises shortly after another vessel, the MV AGN Ragnar, was struck at Ukraine’s Odesa port on July 25, while four Indian nationals were onboard. The incident left two Indian seafarers unaccounted for, prompting India to coordinate actively with Ukrainian officials in search and rescue operations.

In a statement posted on X, the Indian Embassy in Kyiv updated that it is treating the situation surrounding MV AMIR1 with utmost priority. The embassy expressed commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all Indian nationals onboard the ship. This follows concerns raised by the Forward Seamen’s Union of India regarding the crew’s safety and calls for immediate evacuation measures.

The Forward Seamen’s Union has reported that MV AMIR1 is currently docked at the Chornomorsk port in Ukraine, housing a total of fifteen crew members, which includes thirteen Indians. The union claims that the vessel has been subjected to consistent drone and missile threats, placing the crew in a precarious situation and creating a climate of fear regarding potential strikes.

Call for Urgent Action from Authorities

The Forward Seamen’s Union has made an urgent plea to the Indian government and other stakeholders to ensure the crew’s safety and facilitate their prompt repatriation. The union emphasised that Indian seafarers should not be left vulnerable in conflict zones and advocated for immediate protective measures to be put in place.

On July 28, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the continued search for the two missing crew members from MV AGN Ragnar. He affirmed that India is in touch with their families and has reiterated the country’s stance on protecting commercial shipping and civilians amid the ongoing conflict. Jaiswal stated that any targets aimed at commercial shipping, seafarers, and civilian infrastructure are not acceptable and called for de-escalation through diplomatic dialogues.

As the situation around MV AMIR1 is under constant review, the Indian Embassy emphasised that it is prioritizing the safety measures and actions necessary to safeguard Indian nationals involved in both cases. The embassy maintains a proactive approach while liaising with international and national officials to navigate the complexities arising from the ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Thirteen Indian seafarers remain stranded aboard the cargo vessel MV AMIR1 at Chornomorsk port in Ukraine, as reported by the Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI). The union stated that the crew is in a perilous and life-threatening predicament due to ongoing military operations in the region, where both drone and missile attacks have been increasingly frequent.

The FSUI has called upon various authorities, including the Indian government, the vessel’s owners, and the flag state, to take immediate steps to evacuate the crew. The cargo vessel reportedly has a total of 15 crew members, of which 13 are Indian nationals, all of whom are facing heightened risks due to their current location in the conflict zone.

The dire circumstances of the sailors have been underscored by the union, which highlighted the dangers posed by both aerial and ground strikes close to the vessel. As tensions escalate in the Black Sea, the humanitarian situation of those onboard has grown increasingly concerning.

Living Under Constant Threat

The FSUI reported that crew members aboard MV AMIR1 are enduring ongoing fears for their safety, as drone and missile attacks are occurring in close proximity. The union shared distressing footage allegedly taken from the ship, showing smoke rising near the port, further illustrating the gravity of their situation.

According to the union, the continuous threat of a direct hit has created an atmosphere of constant anxiety for the crew. In their appeal for assistance, the FSUI implored all relevant authorities to act swiftly to ensure the sailors’ safety and repatriation, as each passing day increases the risk to their lives.

At the time of reporting, there had been no responses from the Ministry of External Affairs or the shipping company regarding the sailors’ plight. The lack of communication has added to the growing concern among families and communities regarding the safety of Indian seafarers in conflict zones.

Escalating Attacks on Merchant Vessels

This situation unfolds in light of a series of recent attacks targeted at merchant ships operating along Ukraine’s southern coastline. Just a day prior to the FSUI’s statements, an attack reportedly occurred on the merchant vessel MV OMORFI near Odesa, which involved Indian crew members. Tragically, one Indian sailor lost their life during that strike.

The Ministry of External Affairs condemned the attack, emphasising that assaults on commercial shipping pose significant threats to maritime safety, navigation freedom, and global trade. The Ministry further urged Ukraine to ensure that civilian vessels are not caught in military crossfire, aiming to protect all merchant operations in the area.

This incident follows similar attacks on other vessels, such as MV AGN RAGNAR, where two Indian crew members remain unaccounted for, as well as the tragic assault on MV Golden Leo earlier this month, which resulted in the deaths of ten crew members, including four Indians. These events have heightened concerns regarding the security of Indian nationals operating in the Black Sea region.

Black Sea Dangers Highlighted

The recent incidents have drawn attention to the increasing dangers that commercial sailors face in the Black Sea amidst the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Ports like Odesa and Chornomorsk, while essential for cargo transit, have become regular targets for missile and drone strikes, forcing crews to endure extended periods under potential threat.

In light of these alarming developments, the Ministry of External Affairs has advised Indian nationals to thoroughly evaluate security conditions before accepting employment on ships operating in or passing through the Black Sea. The warning comes as many civilian vessels within the region remain susceptible to violence, impacting the safety of those on board.

The situation for Indian seafarers, therefore, remains critical as authorities call for urgent interventions to safeguard lives and ensure the safe return of stranded sailors in conflict zones.

Ukraine has conveyed its condolences to India over the deaths of Indian seafarers amid the worsening security situation in the Black Sea, with Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha writing to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to express sympathy and propose discussions on regional security.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Embassy of Ukraine in India said Sybiha had sent a letter of condolence to Jaishankar following the recent incidents involving Indian nationals aboard commercial vessels operating in the conflict-hit region.

Ukraine Seeks Talks on Black Sea Security

The Ukrainian Embassy expressed its deepest sympathies to the families of the Indian seafarers who lost their lives due to the deteriorating security situation in the Black Sea.

It also said Ukraine hopes the foreign ministers of both countries will hold talks in the near future to discuss the evolving situation in the region.

“We hope that, following the relevant proposal made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, a conversation between the foreign ministers of our two countries will take place in the nearest future to discuss in detail the current security situation in the Black Sea region,” the statement said.

Indian Seafarers Affected by Recent Attacks

The statement comes as tensions continue to escalate in the Black Sea amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

On Sunday, a merchant vessel carrying four Indian nationals was struck at the port of Odesa. According to the Embassy of India in Ukraine, two of the Indians are safe, while information regarding the remaining two is awaited.

Earlier, on July 19, four Indian nationals were killed and another was critically injured when the merchant vessel MV Golden Leo came under attack while departing from the port of Odesa.

India Issues Advisory for Seafarers

In view of the volatile security situation in and around the Black Sea and adjoining maritime areas, the Ministry of External Affairs has advised Indian nationals considering employment on commercial vessels operating in the region to carefully evaluate the security risks before accepting such assignments.

The ministry has also urged seafarers to ensure that their employment contracts comply with applicable international maritime standards.

Indian nationals requiring assistance have been advised to contact the Embassy of India in Ukraine or the Indian Consulates in the region for consular support.
