How the Incident Took Place

The girl, from Thimmathur near Tamil Nadu’s Hosur, had been married off to a 29-year-old man, Madesh, on March 3 in Bengaluru. She had been studying until Class 7 but was pulled out of school and kept at home, a common practice in rural areas. Her protests against the forced marriage were ignored by her parents, and she was taken to her in-laws’ village in Kalikuttai after the wedding.

After returning to her village, the girl voiced her reluctance to move to her marital home and refused to comply. Despite her objections, her husband Madesh, and his older brother Mallesh forcibly abducted her and took her back to their village. The distressing incident was captured by bystanders and quickly spread on social media, triggering an investigation.

Multiple Arrests were Initiated by the Police

The grandmother of the girl approached the police, leading to the arrest of Madesh, Mallesh along with her mother Nagamma. The girl’s father along with Mallesh’s spouse also received police detainment. The police charged all defendants according to both the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Child Marriage Act. Each of these charges could lead to a maximum two-year imprisonment together with fines reaching Rs. 1 lakh.

The girl resides with her grandparents at the present time. The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act exists in India making child marriages illegal by declaring all such unions officially void. Child marriage exists as a notable problem although the law declares them invalid. The state of Karnataka recorded 180 cases of child marriage during 2023-2024 resulting in 105 stopped marriages and legal consequences for 75 individuals involved.

This collaboration aims to support the education of girls in India, enabling them to overcome regressive social norms and fulfill their educational aspirations for a brighter future. As part of this comprehensive program, each girl from Grades 6 to 10 will receive training in 21st-century skills and sports leadership.

Project Nanhi Kali, an initiative started in 1996 by Anand Mahindra, has been dedicatedly working towards providing holistic support to economically and socially disadvantaged girls enrolled in government schools across India. Over the past two decades, the project has positively impacted the lives of nearly 700,000 girls, across 15 states of India.

The initiative integrates key elements of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, focusing on multidisciplinary learning and the development of 21st-century skills. The program includes an updated curriculum that emphasizes practical knowledge, teacher empowerment through training workshops and comprehensive academic and after-school support. Each participating girl will also receive a kit, ensuring they have the necessary resources for a successful academic year.

Showing support for this initiative, Kaushal Mehta, Managing Director of Walplast, stated, “At Walplast, we believe in the transformative power of education. For the students, the program offers a multi-faceted approach. During school hours, all students in Grades 6 to 10 will receive life skills training, covering essential financial skills, digital literacy for online safety and job readiness, and soft skills such as critical thinking and communication. Gender relations will be addressed through life skills and sex education.

The second component of the initiative is the Physical Education program. This after-school curriculum for girls includes a comprehensive health and hygiene curriculum, a dedicated physical education module, and team sports activities. This aspect of the program aims to promote not only physical fitness but also emotional well-being and social skills.

Modules on socio-emotional learning focus on developing emotional intelligence, empathy, interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, and problem-solving abilities among students. Comprehensive gender sensitization modules aim to combat stereotypes, promote gender equality, and raise awareness about reproductive health and gender-based violence. Life skills training equips students with decision-making, critical thinking, communication, and assertiveness skills essential for personal and professional growth.

“All private schools in the state are required to comply with new guidelines from the department, mandating the installation of CCTV cameras at appropriate locations within school premises. Failure to comply may result in actions such as withholding financial grants or revocation of the school’s operating permit,” states the order.

What Maharashtra schools will have to do

As per the order, the CCTV footage should be examined at least three times a week, and if anything unobjectionable is found, it will be the responsibility of the principal and school management to take further action.

Not only this, the school managements will have to conduct thorough background checks of all employees with the assistance of the local police station. Also, schools must submit details and photographs of all their employees to the local police, which will be verified by the police, as per the order.

Cabinet Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha who is also the Guardian Minister for Mumbai suburban district, has written a letter to the District Collector, requesting deployment of female staff at girls’ washrooms in schools. “The entire school premises, except for washrooms, should be brought under the surveillance of CCTV cameras….their safety and proper functioning should be regularly checked by beat marshals or patrolling police teams,” the minister said.

The state government is also planning to impart self-defence training to schools and college students within the Mumbai Suburban region and young women at all Industrial Training Institutes across Maharashtra.

Badlapur protests

On Tuesday, violent protests and rail blockade was held at Badlapur Railway Station for over eight hours against alleged sexual assault on two four-year-old girls at a city school earlier this month. The Thane police and the Government Railway Police (GRP) have registered FIRs against around 500 protesters. Till now at least 72 people have been arrested after around 25 police personnel got injured in incidents of stone-pelting at Badlapur Railway Station. FIRs have been registered by the police on charges including the violation of prohibitory orders, armed unlawful assembly, assault, and damage to public property.

Bombay High Court takes suo motu cognisance

The Bombay High Court took suo motu cognisance of the matter on Wednesday and began hearing the matter on Thursday. A division bench of Justices Revati Mohite-Dere and Prithviraj Chavan is hearing the matter. Meanwhile, the accused in the child sexual abuse case, Akshay Shinde will be kept in Police Custory till 26th August 26 as per orders of a special POCSO court in Kalyan.

It has received multiple accolades for its innovative use of AI and machine learning to deliver tangible results such as the mobilisation of 1.4 million girls across India for school enrollment.

Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA)

Founded in 1972 in Gujarat, this organisation empowers women to pursue careers in a variety of informal industries. The SEWA Trade Facilitation Centre is owned and operated by 50000 women artisans and is the largest Indian women’s organisation to have its own supply chain of craftsmen. Today, SEWA has a presence in countries like Afghanistan and Sri Lanka as well.

MAKAAM

This is a national platform that protects the identities and rights of women farmers in India. Headquartered in Secunderabad, it focuses on offering assistance to women from families affected by farm suicide so that they can continue building their careers and taking on their family responsibilities.

Snehalaya

This organisation was founded in 1989 by Dr Girish Kulkarni to help women and girls affected by commercial sex and the associated evils. It offers a safe refuge for rescued sex workers and trafficking victims, as well as free counselling, legal assistance, and training to take up alternative employment. It also provides education to the children of sex workers and offers palliative care to those with HIV/AIDS.

Mitti Ke Rang

This NGO’s main mission is to rehabilitate and empower disadvantaged women and children. Established in 2014, it helps women, particularly single women and widows, to develop new skill sets through training and education programmes and thus become self-reliant. Currently, it has a presence in 11 countries around the world, using a variety of skill-based courses to help women build better lives.

Safety

This is an NGO that provides women and girls a safe space to discuss and be aware of gender-based violence. It conducts seminars and campaigns to equip women with the knowledge and mental attitude they need to speak up for their safety. It also conducts self-defense classes so that women can guard themselves against sexual predators.

AZAD Foundation

This organisation has helped over 2 billion women around India to become more employable and find good jobs that enable them to build wealth and live with dignity. Among their biggest contributions is the “Women on Wheel” project that empowers urban women to become professional drivers, thus also creating a safer transportation system for Indian women passengers.

To achieve a truly equitable society, women must first be aware of their rights and their inherent worth. NGOs like these are working tirelessly to undo the many decades of gender-based oppression and teach women and girls to stand up for themselves. Their efforts, when coupled with private funding and government policies, can go a long way in creating a world where every woman is confident and ready to build the life she deserves.
