(Criteria)

(Tradition of Vedic Chanting)– 2008 ,

(Buddhist Chanting of Ladakh)-2012,

(Traditional Brass And Copper Craft Of Utensil Making)- पंजाब के जंडियाला गुरु के थढेरा समुदाय का शिल्प 2014,

Every year, once the lights fade and sweets are shared, India wakes up to a haze. The festival of Diwali leaves behind warmth, memories, and choking air. Air quality levels often drop to dangerous lows, especially across northern cities. While awareness campaigns about pollution are common, what happens after the festival often gets ignored. This is where brands can make a real difference.

Marketing has always had the power to shape behavior, but beyond awareness, it can now inspire cleanup. Many companies already invest in sustainability messaging during festive seasons. Yet the opportunity lies in turning that messaging into measurable post-festival action.

1. Turn CSR into Community Cleanup Campaigns

Instead of limiting Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to donation drives, brands can take ownership of air and waste cleanup initiatives right after Diwali. For instance, they can organize neighborhood-level cleanups, tree-planting drives, and composting programs in collaboration with resident associations and local NGOs.

Rather than one-off awareness efforts, brands could pool resources across industries, imagine a collective “Clean Air Week” immediately after Diwali, where multiple sectors come together to fund green recovery programs, recycling drives, and urban beautification efforts. The impact would be social, environmental, and reputational all at once.

2. Create Incentives for Green Behavior

Consumers respond strongly to incentives, especially when rewards tie into everyday choices. Brands can offer discounts or loyalty points to customers who opt for cleaner, greener actions post-Diwali.

E-commerce platforms, service providers, and consumer brands could reward users who choose sustainable packaging, recycle decorations, or use eco-friendly commuting options. Similarly, energy and appliance brands could promote eco-efficient exchanges to replace older, energy-draining products.

By turning post-festival cleanup into a rewarding, gamified experience rather than a moral duty, brands can make sustainability aspirational and enjoyable.

3. Use Brand Influence to Push Policy and Collaboration

Brands hold immense influence, not just with consumers but also with policymakers. By combining their voices, they can advocate for stronger air-quality initiatives, support stricter emission norms, or fund community monitoring systems.

When private enterprises align with civic bodies and environmental organizations, they can drive large-scale impact, such as setting up local air-quality monitoring hubs, sponsoring green zones, or supporting clean-tech startups. These actions go beyond festive commitments and create lasting change throughout the year.

4. Make Cleanup a Cultural Continuation, Not a Chore

Diwali symbolizes renewal and cleansing; homes are cleaned, lights are lit, and new beginnings are celebrated. Brands can build on that same emotion after the festival, reframing cleanup as a continuation of Diwali’s spirit rather than an afterthought.

Lifestyle and home-care brands, for instance, could encourage families to embrace “Post-Diwali Detox” initiatives, combining sustainable home care, indoor air purification, and eco-friendly décor reuse. The idea is to celebrate purity and freshness, not just before Diwali, but after it too.

A similar cultural approach is seen in other countries where collective cleanups follow major festivals, turning hygiene and sustainability into social rituals. In India, this emotional connection to renewal and gratitude could be the perfect entry point for such initiatives.

5. Invest in Long-Term Air Quality Solutions

Beyond seasonal marketing, brands can commit to long-term sustainability by supporting innovation and infrastructure that improves air quality. This could include sponsoring air-filtering installations in public spaces, partnering with clean-energy ventures, or investing in research for eco-friendly festive materials.

Waste generated during Diwali, from used diyas to flower remains, can be repurposed through recycling programs or composting projects. Brands that integrate such efforts into their sustainability roadmap will be remembered not for festive advertising, but for tangible environmental impact.

A New Kind of Celebration

The air crisis after Diwali can no longer be dismissed as routine. Awareness and technology are already here; what’s missing is action. Brands have the reach and influence to drive that change.

Imagine a week after Diwali dedicated to collective recovery, a “Clean Sky Drive” where every purchase, participation, or pledge contributes to greener neighborhoods and cleaner air. Social media could shift from discount codes to stories of renewal and responsibility.

This isn’t about guilt; it’s about gratitude. Honoring the light of Diwali means protecting the air that lets it shine. If brands lead the way, post-Diwali mornings could hold less smoke and a lot more hope.

A Diwali celebration in Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati area turned fatal when a 16-year-old girl was hit on the head by an iron pipe used to light firecrackers. The incident occurred late on October 21 near Patel Dairy Parlour in the Chainpur locality, claiming the life of Heena Purohit, a Class 11 student.

Celebration Turns into Chaos

Heena had stepped out with her family and friends to enjoy Diwali festivities when the accident took place. Around midnight, a sudden explosion startled the crowd. Moments later, Heena collapsed with a severe head injury. She was rushed to a private hospital and later shifted to Sola Civil Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries the next evening.

How the Accident Happened

According to police, three boys, a 19-year-old identified as Neel Hirenbhai Rami and two minors were experimenting with fireworks by inserting them into a metal pipe wedged between stones. When the pipe toppled and the firecracker ignited, it shot upward with immense force, striking Heena, who was standing nearby with a friend.

Inspector Yuvrajsinh Vaghela from Sabarmati Police said the act was entirely careless.

“The youths were playing with firecrackers inside an iron pipe. When it fell, the explosion propelled it toward the girl, causing her fatal injuries,” he confirmed.

CCTV Evidence and Arrests

After learning details from Heena’s friend Manya, her father, Mineshbhai Purohit, checked nearby CCTV footage to trace what had happened. Footage from a local building showed the trio filling the pipe, placing it between stones, and lighting the fuse moments before it flew off. Based on the video evidence, police registered an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for negligent acts leading to death and detained all three accused.

Purohit, in his complaint, said, “They were bursting firecrackers carelessly and negligently, using iron pipes that had already been scorched from repeated use.”

Shock and Outrage in the Community

The tragedy has left residents of Chainpur shaken. Many have voiced anger over the unsafe use of makeshift devices during festive celebrations. “These modified fireworks are unpredictable and can turn deadly within seconds,” said a police official involved in the probe.

The case has reignited calls for stronger public awareness and stricter regulation on the use of dangerous materials during festivals. Locals held a small candle vigil in memory of Heena, mourning the young life lost to recklessness.

Festival of lights is here and preparing for Diwali involves not only decorating your home but also preparing your skin for the festive season. A consistent skincare routine is essential to counter the effects of pollution, late nights, and rich foods, all of which can contribute to dullness and breakouts. Here is a guide to help you achieve a radiant glow, from recommended products to DIY remedies and practical tips.

How to prepare your skin for the Diwali glow?

Establishing a dedicated skincare routine in the weeks ahead of Diwali is necessary to prepare your skin for makeup and festivities. It is necessary to cleanse your day with a gentle, hydrating cleanser to remove dirt, oil, and makeup without stripping your skin’s natural oils. This is also important for post-Diwali skincare after being exposed to fireworks and pollution.

Use a gentle exfoliator 1–2 times a week to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover, revealing a brighter complexion. For sensitive skin, opt for enzyme-based exfoliants. A brightening serum, particularly one with Vitamin C, can help reduce dullness, even out skin tone, and protect against environmental damage. Apply a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer to lock in moisture. For dry skin, you can switch to a richer cream or facial oil at night.

DIY face masks for Diwali skincare

For a more traditional or budget-friendly approach, the following homemade face packs can work wonders!

Gram Flour (Besan) and Turmeric Pack

Mix 2 tablespoons of gram flour, half a teaspoon of turmeric, and 2–3 tablespoons of plain yogurt to form a paste. Gram flour exfoliates while turmeric brightens the skin.

This age-old Indian homemade face pack for instant glow is a powerful brightener and mild exfoliator. How to Use: Combine two tablespoons of gram flour, 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric, and two to three tablespoons of plain yoghurt to create a smooth paste. Apply and leave for 15 minutes.

Honey and Milk Pack

Mix 1 tablespoon of raw honey with 1 tablespoon of full-fat milk for a deeply hydrating mask. For a glowing complexion this Diwali, make a simple milk and honey face mask by mixing 2 tablespoons of milk with 1 tablespoon of honey.

Apply this paste to a clean face for 15-20 minutes, then rinse with cool water to hydrate and brighten your skin. You can also create an anti-acne mask by adding a pinch of turmeric or a brighter glow by adding a teaspoon of lemon juice for those without sensitive skin.

Rose Petals and Milk Pack

Crush 10–15 fresh rose petals and mix with 2 tablespoons of raw milk and 1 teaspoon of gram flour. This helps soothe redness and hydrate the skin. A rose petal and milk face mask can be made for a glowing complexion for Diwali by crushing fresh or dried rose petals into a paste and mixing it with raw milk. This mask can be customized with ingredients like sandalwood or gram flour for added benefits, then applied for 15-20 minutes before being rinsed off to moisturize, brighten, and gently exfoliate the skin.

Oatmeal and Rose Water Pack

Combine ground oatmeal with rose water to create a soothing, anti-inflammatory pack that reduces dry patches. An oatmeal and rose water face mask is a natural and effective DIY treatment for radiant skin, especially before a festival like Diwali. To make it, grind oatmeal into a powder, mix it with rose water to form a paste, and apply it to your face for 15 minutes. For extra benefits, you can also add honey or turmeric for moisturizing and brightening, respectively, before rinsing off with cool water.

A Festival That Lights Up More Than Just Homes

As the first diya flickers to life and the night fills with the scent of incense and sweets, something magical happens — it feels like the entire world begins to glow. Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is one of those rare moments when everything seems touched by warmth and wonder. Streets shimmer, homes sparkle, and hearts feel a little lighter. But beyond the beauty of lamps and fireworks, Diwali carries a meaning far deeper — one that reminds us to bring light not just into our homes, but into our lives.

Light Over Darkness, Good Over Evil

At its core, Diwali is a celebration of light over darkness and good over evil. The story of Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana is the most well-known tale behind it, but its message is timeless: that truth, courage, and compassion will always find a way to shine through. Every diya we light isn’t just decoration — it’s a tiny promise to ourselves that hope will never fade, even in our darkest times.

Homes Transformed into Havens of Renewal

In the days leading up to the festival, homes transform into colorful sanctuaries. Corners are swept clean, walls are adorned with fresh paint or flowers, and doorsteps bloom with rangolis — intricate designs that seem to dance in color. Diyas and candles glow in every room, their soft light chasing away shadows. There’s something comforting about this ritual — it’s more than just decoration; it’s renewal. It’s as if we’re clearing out not just dust, but also worries and regrets, making space for joy, peace, and new beginnings.

The Joy of Togetherness

Then comes what most people love most — the togetherness. Families gather, sometimes traveling miles to be with one another. The kitchen becomes the heart of every home, filled with laughter and the sweet aroma of ghee and cardamom. Plates overflow with laddoos, barfis, and other treats that are lovingly shared with neighbors and friends. It’s these little moments — stealing sweets before dinner, teasing cousins, or watching grandparents smile under the glow of diyas — that make Diwali truly special.

A Sky Full of Wonder, a Heart Full of Reflection

As night falls, the sky comes alive. Fireworks burst in dazzling colors, lighting up faces below with childlike wonder. Each sparkle feels like a celebration of everything good — the triumphs, the lessons, the love that keeps us going. But over time, many have begun embracing quieter, greener celebrations. Eco-friendly diyas, minimal fireworks, and thoughtful gifting are becoming part of a new kind of Diwali — one that celebrates joy while caring for the planet. After all, spreading light shouldn’t mean dimming the stars above us.

Lakshmi Puja: Seeking Wealth Beyond Gold

Amid all the noise and color, there’s a serene moment that grounds the festival — the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, the bringer of wealth and prosperity. During Lakshmi Puja, families sit together, offering prayers and lighting lamps, asking not only for financial abundance but for wisdom, peace, and kindness. The gentle chime of bells, the fragrance of incense, and the quiet hum of mantras create an atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly. It’s a reminder that true wealth isn’t measured in gold, but in gratitude, relationships, and contentment.

New Clothes, New Energy

No Diwali feels complete without new clothes and gifts. The excitement of slipping into fresh attire, the joy of exchanging presents — big or small — fills the day with cheer. A new outfit represents more than style; it’s a symbol of renewal, of stepping into the coming year with fresh energy. Every shared gift, every smile, weaves a sense of connection — a gentle reminder that giving is the purest way of celebrating abundance.

The Inner Light That Truly Matters

But perhaps the most beautiful truth about Diwali is this: its real magic lies beyond the diyas. The lights we see outside are reflections of something we carry within — our ability to be kind, to forgive, to hope, and to love. In a world often clouded by negativity and noise, Diwali invites us to slow down and rediscover our inner glow. It reminds us that even the smallest act — a smile to a stranger, a helping hand, a word of encouragement — can brighten someone’s darkness.

This Diwali, Light Up the World Within

This year, as you light your diyas and watch the glow dance across your walls, take a moment to look inward. Think about the light you carry — the one that helps you rise after every fall, that comforts others when they stumble, that brings warmth to every room you enter. Because that’s what Diwali is truly about — not just lighting up our homes, but illuminating our hearts.

So, let the diyas burn bright, let laughter echo through your home, and let your kindness light up the lives around you. Beyond the sweets, the fireworks, and the rituals, Diwali is — and will always be — a celebration of the light that lives within us all.

Jaipur, fondly known as the Pink City, is an example of how heritage and modernity walk hand-in-hand. And there is one family in Jaipur that has held on to a tradition for the past 256 years — not for fame, but for faith. In the Walled City’s Tripolia Bazaar, the Bomb family makes black ink (Kali Syahi), the same ink their ancestors once made for royals. This is a story that will never fade — just like the ink itself. Amid the Walled City’s pink-hued facades, this legacy has been a witness to heritage and modernity for centuries. This incredible black ink, known as Kali Syahi, was used by the rulers of the Kachhwaha dynasty for both royal decrees and official documents.

A Royal Legacy

In the 18th century, the Kachhwaha rulers invited the family from Sanganer to Jaipur to start their work in the Walled City’s Tripolia Bazaar (now one of Jaipur’s busiest marketplaces) and set up Kali Syahi ki Dukan (The Shop of Black Ink). What started as an artisan’s pursuit has now become part of the city’s cultural life. Years ago, this ink was used for royal decrees, ledgers, and academic degrees.

How is Kali Syahi Prepared?

The fourth-generation Bomb family—jewellers by profession—come together from Germany every year during the no-moon night (Amavasya) and begin the ritual of making the black ink. Calling it an act of devotion, the current head of the family, Lokesh Bomb, shares that for him, this is more than a ritual—it is a legacy that needs to be preserved.

Talking about the process, Lokesh Bomb says, “The process is simple but must be done with great care and purity. We mix ingredients like kajal, gondh, gallnuts, and herbal extracts—following our ancestral recipe. While mixing and preparing the ink, mantras are chanted.”

He explains that the result isn’t just ink—it never fades, and it is believed to act as a protector and bring prosperity. “This isn’t just tradition; the ingredients are rich in iron salts and tannins, making it Ayurvedic. Earlier, hakims even used it to treat skin disorders,” he adds.

Although demand for this black ink has nearly vanished, Lokesh continues to keep the tradition alive — patiently collecting ingredients and preparing the black paste every year.

Inspiring the Future Generation

While the world talks about AI and digitisation, families like the Bombs remain unsung custodians of heritage. They have kept alive a chain that connects the past with the future.

“At Diwali, we do three Devi Poojas — Maa Kali, symbolic of Kali Syahi; Maa Saraswati, symbolic of the kalam and bahikhata (account ledger we use through the year); and Maa Lakshmi. My children are involved in the entire process — my son Anoop and daughter Bhagwati helps in the preparation. They are the next generation who will be custodians of this legacy,” Lokesh shares.

Diwali Bonus
