Phitku, a personal care brand renowned for its innovative approach to body odour, has announced its entry into the oral care market with the launch of Phitku Mouth Paste. This new product exemplifies the brand’s commitment to its philosophy of “Eliminate. Don’t Mask.”, aiming to provide a comprehensive solution for breath odour.

A Holistic Approach to Oral Hygiene

Phitku Mouth Paste is designed as a whole-mouth oral-care formulation. Unlike traditional products that focus predominantly on teeth, this innovative offering addresses the entire oral environment, including teeth, gums, and tongue. The formulation is particularly tailored to improve odour and freshness, challenging the conventional emphasis on surface cleaning alone.

At the core of Phitku Mouth Paste is Phitkari, or Potassium Alum, an ingredient already linked to the brand’s existing deodorant line. This component aids in controlling bacteria associated with unpleasant oral odour, effectively connecting the brand’s experience in body odour management to its new focus on oral freshness.

The Mouth Paste comprises four distinctive ingredients: Phitkari, Red Banana, Neem, and Clove. This combination is designed to target the overall oral hygiene experience, further supporting the brand’s holistic approach.

Targeting Key Areas of Oral Health

Phitku’s whole-mouth approach encompasses three critical areas: teeth, gums, and tongue. Hydrated silica is integrated to aid in cleaning and removing surface stains. Meanwhile, the inclusion of Phitkari, Neem, and Clove supports gum care and overall oral health. The formulation also specifically addresses the tongue, an area often overlooked, due to its role in harbouring odour-causing bacteria.

Additionally, Red Banana Powder acts as a prebiotic, promoting a balanced oral environment. This holistic approach allows Phitku to extend its philosophy beyond merely maintaining dental aesthetics, addressing breath odour as a core concern in oral hygiene.

Founders’ Insights on Product Development

Rahul Dokania, Co-founder and Chief Product Officer, stated, “Developing Mouth Paste was about translating Phitku’s odour-first philosophy into a completely new category while staying true to what the brand embodies. We have concentrated on a formulation that considers the teeth, gums, and tongue, aiming to create an everyday oral-care product that effectively rethinks breath odour management.”

Neha Marda, Co-founder, expressed the brand’s commitment to addressing concerns at their source: “With Mouth Paste, we aimed to broaden the conversation around oral care, which has traditionally focused on teeth alone. Our belief is that care for the mouth should encompass more than just the teeth, and this formulation encourages consumers to adopt a more comprehensive approach to oral hygiene.”

Sumit Marda, Co-founder and CEO, noted the brand’s vision for entering the oral care sector: “Our entry into this market was not about becoming another toothpaste brand. Instead, we aimed to leverage Phitku’s existing strength in odour management to develop Mouth Paste, thereby prompting consumers to rethink their views on oral care.”

Product Details and Availability

Phitku Mouth Paste is formulated to be SLS-free and fluoride-free, positioning itself as an odour-focused alternative to conventional toothpaste. It aims to tackle odour at its source rather than merely masking it with scents.

The product is available in packs of two on the brand’s official website, having been released on August 16, 2026. This marks a significant expansion for Phitku, which was founded on January 16, 2025, by Neha Marda, Sumit Marda, and Rahul Dokania, who aimed to rethink daily hygiene through the use of functional ingredients and modern formats.

The Indian government has initiated significant changes in the dental sector by replacing the Dental Council of India (DCI) with the National Dental Commission (NDC). This shift, which became effective on March 19, involves the repeal of existing dental legislation. The primary objective of this transition is to enhance the quality of dental education and ensure improved and more affordable dental care for the general public.

The NDC introduces a new governance model comprising three distinct boards, each focusing on specific aspects of dental regulation. One board will oversee dental education, another will be responsible for the inspection and rating of dental colleges, while the third will handle the ethical standards and registration processes for dentists. This multi-faceted approach is expected to enhance accountability and streamline regulatory processes.

Leadership Appointments

Dr. Sanjay Tewari has been appointed as the chairperson of the National Dental Commission. The government has also designated various experts to lead the three boards within the commission. These appointments aim to ensure that the commission operates effectively and adheres to the newly established standards.

Impact on Dental Services and Education

The establishment of the NDC is anticipated to have far-reaching implications for both patients and dental students. The commission is tasked with setting clear standards for dental education, focusing on improving the overall quality and accessibility of dental care services. By implementing stricter regulations, the NDC aims to address gaps in basic dental services, which have been a concern in various regions across the country.

Students pursuing dental education can expect increased oversight of dental colleges under the new regulatory framework. Institutions will undergo assessment and rating processes, which will be coupled with the formation of guidelines to regulate tuition fees in private colleges. This initiative aims to foster transparency and minimize discrepancies in educational costs, ensuring that students receive fair treatment in terms of fees.

Addressing Shortages and Promoting Research

The National Dental Commission will also focus on assessing the distribution of dentists throughout India. The commission is committed to promoting research initiatives aimed at addressing shortages in dental services and enhancing the overall quality of care provided to patients. This holistic approach seeks to ensure that dental professionals are adequately prepared to meet the needs of the population.

The introduction of the NDC addresses long-standing criticisms regarding the transparency and delay in reforms associated with the previous regulatory body. By instituting a more accountable framework, the government aims to establish an efficient regulatory environment that enhances both dental education and patient care. The changes are part of a broader initiative to modernize the dental sector and improve service delivery across the board.

The debate surrounding mouthwash often raises the question of whether it is critical for maintaining oral health or merely serves a cosmetic purpose. Dental professionals suggest that the truth is nuanced.

While mouthwash can provide temporary freshness to breath and aid in plaque removal, it is not considered one of the fundamental components of oral hygiene. Many dentists view mouthwash as an additional tool in a comprehensive dental care routine, meant to enhance rather than replace brushing and flossing.

The Complexity of Oral Microbiology

The mouth is home to over 700 species of microbes, forming a complex ecosystem that is essential for immunity and protection against harmful bacteria. Disruption of this balance can lead to negative health implications. This complexity raises concerns regarding the overuse of mouthwash. Certain antibacterial rinses that contain potent antiseptics, such as chlorhexidine, are effective for specific conditions but are not intended for regular, long-term use.

A review conducted in 2025 highlighted that excessive mouthwash use could decrease microbial diversity within the oral cavity, a change associated with dry mouth, altered taste perception, and an increased risk of oral diseases over time. Dr. Diksha Taneja, a Consultant in Dentistry at Paras Health in Panchkula, emphasizes the importance of selecting the appropriate mouthwash formulation for effective oral care.

She notes, “Mouthwashes significantly depend on their ingredients. Therapeutic varieties containing antibacterial agents, like chlorhexidine or essential oils, can help reduce plaque formation, manage gingivitis, and decrease bacterial levels in the mouth. Fluoride-based rinses are beneficial in reinforcing tooth enamel and reducing cavity risks, particularly for individuals predisposed to tooth decay.”

Cosmetic vs. Therapeutic Mouthwashes

Dr. Taneja also warns that many over-the-counter mouthwashes primarily serve a cosmetic function. “They are formulated to temporarily cover bad breath, rather than to address deeper oral health issues,” she explains. Meanwhile, Dr. Debojyoti Dhar, Cofounder and Director of BugSpeaks (Leucine Rich Bio), highlights the need for balance in oral hygiene practices.

He states, “Mouthwash should be used alongside brushing and flossing. Ideally, it is best utilized once daily after brushing to maintain oral microbiota balance. Regular or prolonged use is generally discouraged, and opting for alcohol-free options is advisable.” Experts concur that the aim of effective oral care should not be complete sterilization but the maintenance of healthy microbial diversity.

The Bottom Line on Mouthwash Use

Experts posit that while mouthwash can be a helpful addition to oral hygiene, it should not stand alone as a substitute for essential practices like brushing and flossing. Unless fresh breath is a priority, it may not be necessary to incorporate mouthwash into daily routines.

Tooth-related issues in India are evolving beyond typical cavities and dental pain. Dentists across the nation are observing an alarming rise in cases of weakened tooth enamel, which serves as the hard protective layer of teeth. This enamel is essential for safeguarding against decay, sensitivity, and other damages. Unlike bones, enamel does not regenerate once it is worn down. Many individuals remain unaware that certain everyday practices, including improper brushing techniques and excessive consumption of specific beverages, can lead to gradual erosion of this vital layer. Symptoms such as increased sensitivity and a yellowish tint may appear only after significant damage has occurred.

Common Mistakes That Cause Enamel Erosion

Preventing enamel erosion is largely achievable through awareness of common detrimental habits. Identifying these mistakes can empower individuals to take proactive steps in preserving their dental health.

The first common mistake involves brushing too hard or using a toothbrush with hard bristles. Many mistakenly think that applying more pressure results in cleaner teeth; however, aggressive brushing can gradually damage enamel. Using a hard-bristled brush or exerting excessive force can cause micro-abrasions on the enamel surface, leading to thinning enamel and heightened sensitivity over time. To minimize damage, it is advisable to opt for a soft-bristled toothbrush and adopt gentle circular brushing motions for two minutes, twice daily, while avoiding excessive pressure.

Another significant factor contributing to enamel wear is the frequent consumption of acidic foods and drinks. Items such as soft drinks, packaged fruit juices, energy drinks, citrus fruits, and vinegar-based products contain acids that are harmful to enamel. Continuous exposure to these acids can soften enamel, resulting in gradual erosion. The habit of sipping acidic beverages throughout the day increases the duration of acid exposure on teeth, further escalating the risk of damage. To mitigate this, individuals should limit their intake of sugary and acidic items and rinse their mouths with water afterward. It is also essential to wait for at least 30 minutes before brushing after consuming acidic foods, as brushing immediately after can exacerbate the damage.

Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, is another common issue that can lead to enamel erosion. This condition often occurs during sleep or times of stress, and many may be unaware that they grind their teeth at night. The constant pressure and friction from grinding can slowly wear down enamel, resulting in flat or chipped teeth and increased sensitivity. If individuals notice symptoms like jaw pain, headaches, or visible wear on teeth, consulting a dentist is recommended. A night guard can provide protection against enamel erosion during sleep.

Neglecting oral hygiene and skipping routine dental check-ups can significantly affect enamel health. Inadequate brushing or flossing leads to plaque accumulation, which produces acids that harm enamel and may contribute to decay. Furthermore, missing regular dental visits can result in unnoticed early erosion. Regular check-ups enable dentists to detect early signs of enamel damage before it escalates. Maintaining proper oral hygiene practices, which include brushing twice daily, flossing regularly, and visiting a dentist every six months, is essential.

Overusing teeth whitening treatments is another mistake that can weaken enamel. Many popular whitening products contain potent bleaching agents that, when misused, may cause temporary sensitivity or even enamel damage. To avoid risks associated with frequent use of over-the-counter products, consulting a dentist before starting any whitening treatment is advisable. Careful adherence to instructions and avoiding overuse are critical to safeguard enamel.

Indicators of Weakened Enamel

Many individuals may not immediately recognize enamel erosion, but some common warning signs include heightened sensitivity to hot or cold foods, a yellowish appearance where inner dentine becomes visible, rough or chipped edges on teeth, and an increase in cavities. Prompt consultation with a dental professional is crucial upon experiencing these symptoms.

World Smile Day is celebrated every year on the first Friday of October. The day was established in 1999 by Harvey Ball, an American commercial artist who created the iconic yellow smiley face in 1963. Concerned that the original meaning of his cheerful symbol had been lost through commercialisation, Ball dedicated this day to encouraging people worldwide to share smiles and to perform acts of kindness. The motto of World Smile Day is simple yet profound: “Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile.” While the day is about spreading goodwill and joy, it also provides an apt occasion to reflect on the significance of a healthy smile, which is deeply connected to dental health.

The Remarkable Durability of Teeth Through History

Teeth have fascinated scientists and historians for centuries, largely because they are the most enduring parts of the body. Whenever fossils of early primates or humans, such as Homo habilis, are found, it is often their jaws and teeth that remain intact long after soft tissues have decayed. Teeth are rich in minerals and survive thousands, even millions, of years, giving clues to the diets, lifestyles, and health of ancient creatures. In ancient Egyptian mummies, even when the body has decayed over time, teeth often remain preserved. This remarkable durability highlights the natural strength of teeth and underlines their importance in human survival and evolution.

The Challenge of Declining Dental Health Today

In stark contrast to the resilience of teeth in ancient times, dental health in modern society is facing many challenges. Today, a large number of people suffer from dental problems such as cavities, gum diseases, and enamel erosion. The reasons for this decline are multifaceted. One major cause is the shift in dietary habits, with an increase in the consumption of sugary and processed foods that provide a rich environment for harmful bacteria. These bacteria produce acids that erode tooth enamel and lead to cavities. Poor dental hygiene practices, irregular dental check-ups, and lack of awareness about oral care add to the problem.

Lifestyle factors such as tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption further exacerbate dental issues. Moreover, socioeconomic disparities mean that many lack access to affordable dental care and education, resulting in untreated dental diseases. Despite advances in dental science, poor oral health has become a widespread issue globally, affecting billions and often referred to as a silent epidemic because of its high prevalence yet low awareness.

Why Dental Health Matters Beyond Just Teeth

Dental health is a critical component of overall health and well-being. The state of our teeth and gums often reflects broader health conditions. Poor oral health has been linked to serious medical issues such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory infections, and complications during pregnancy. The mouth serves as a portal to the body; infections in the oral cavity can spread bacteria to other organs through the bloodstream. Beyond physical health, poor dental health can also affect mental well-being by reducing self-confidence, hindering communication, and lowering quality of life.

Maintaining healthy teeth and gums requires consistent care including regular brushing, flossing, and professional dental check-ups. Diet plays a significant role as well; reducing sugar intake and consuming foods rich in calcium and vitamins can strengthen teeth and gums. Fluoride in toothpaste helps protect enamel from acid attacks. World Smile Day, while focused on kindness and smiles, can inspire individuals to also take pride in their dental health to keep their smiles bright for life.
