The counting of votes for the civic body elections in Punjab commenced on Friday, 29 May 2026, amid extensive security arrangements across various counting centres in the state. Early trends suggest that the Congress Party is performing well in several municipal wards, including notable districts such as Kapurthala. The elections for 75 Municipal Councils and 20 Nagar Panchayats were conducted on 26 May 2026, using traditional ballot papers.

Polling is seen as a crucial political contest in anticipation of the forthcoming Punjab Assembly elections scheduled for 2027. Major political parties including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) are testing their influence at the grassroots level through these elections. A total of 7,555 candidates are contesting across various constituencies.

Among those competing, AAP has fielded 1,801 candidates, while Congress has put forth 1,550 candidates, BJP has nominated 1,316 candidates, and SAD has presented 1,251 candidates for the elections. The counting process commenced promptly at 8 am and is exclusively accessible to authorised personnel and election staff.

Counting Process Underway With Strict Observations

Election authorities have instituted restricted access to counting halls, allowing entry only to those with identification cards or designated staff members. Two micro observers have been assigned to each counting centre, working under the supervision of district-level general observers. Charumita, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Ajnala, reported that the counting process for Ramdas began without any hitches at around 8:30 am.

“Counting is currently ongoing across 11 booths in Ramdas with a total of 44 candidates from four parties,” Charumita stated. “We anticipate completing each round of counting within an hour to an hour and a half.” The counting is being conducted under careful monitoring, with an emphasis on maintaining security at the centres.

Inderjeet Singh, the Deputy Superintendent of Police in Ajnala, mentioned that comprehensive security measures have been established at all counting venues. A strong room has been designated at Government College, Ajnala, where the counting is taking place, supervised by SP Headquarters and four officers at the SHO level. Singh confirmed that the counting of votes for 11 wards is currently in progress under the watch of 33 security personnel, assuring that the process remains peaceful.

Congress Shows Strong Performance in Early Results

Initial results and emerging trends have indicated that Congress is gaining traction in several key wards, particularly in Kapurthala. For instance, in Ward No. 21, Congress secured 353 votes, outperforming SAD, which garnered 110 votes, AAP with 138 votes, and an Independent candidate who received 62 votes. In another competitive area, Ward No. 15 in Kapurthala, Congress again led, obtaining 358 votes.

The BJP followed with 176 votes, AAP with 201 votes, and SAD with only 20 votes, while the NOTA option received eight votes. In Mansa Nagar Council, Congress candidate Krishna Devi is reported to have won from Ward No. 9. The overall voter turnout for these municipal elections was recorded at 63.94 per cent.

As the counting proceeds, the outcomes are anticipated to reflect the political landscape of Punjab ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Opposition parties previously accused the AAP government of misusing official resources during the elections; however, the state government has denied these allegations, asserting that the electoral process has been conducted fairly.

The Congress party has voiced its concerns regarding the recent increase in fuel prices, marking the fourth hike in a mere ten-day span. This has prompted significant criticism of the Central Government, particularly directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The party has labelled him as ‘Inflation Man’ and ‘Mehengai Manav’ in light of these developments, alleging that these price adjustments reflect a broader issue of economic mismanagement.

Responses from Political Leaders

Senior leaders within the Congress party have publicly critiqued the government’s handling of the situation. They assert that the continuous rise in fuel costs is a direct indication of poor governance and failure to control inflation. According to party officials, this trend is exacerbating the financial burden on the common citizen, particularly affecting the lower and middle-income groups who rely heavily on affordable fuel prices.

In a press conference, a prominent Congress spokesperson stated that the hike is a clear signal that the government is out of touch with the reality faced by everyday people. He highlighted that the increase has a cascading effect on the prices of essential commodities, further inflating the cost of living for many households. The spokesperson urged the ruling party to reconsider these hikes and prioritise the welfare of the populace over revenue generation.

Furthermore, various members of opposition parties have echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the negative implications of rising fuel prices on the economy. They assert that higher fuel costs influence transportation and logistics expenses, leading to an increase in prices of goods and services across the board.

Public Reaction to Fuel Price Hikes

Public sentiment regarding the recent fuel price hikes has been predominantly negative, with many citizens expressing their discontent through social media platforms. Numerous complaints have surfaced, with individuals citing the challenges faced in managing their daily expenses due to the increasing cost of fuel. Many have shared personal stories illustrating how these hikes have forced them to alter their consumption habits and economise on essential resources.

Consumer advocacy groups are also raising alarms, indicating that the continuous price surge could lead to a wider economic downturn. They argue that if fuel prices remain high without any effective government intervention, it could eventually lead to a decrease in overall consumption, adversely affecting economic growth. These groups are calling for a thorough review of the pricing mechanisms to ensure that consumers are not disproportionately affected.

Protests and demonstrations have been reported in multiple cities across the country, where concerned citizens have taken to the streets to voice their frustration. They have demanded immediate government action to address the escalating fuel prices and to restore affordability for all citizens. The ongoing pattern of price hikes has indeed ignited a fervent public discourse on economic policies and their impact on daily life.

Government’s Stance on Fuel Pricing

The government’s response to the ongoing situation has been to reassure citizens about its commitment to managing inflation and economic stability. Officials have stated that the international market dynamics play a significant role in determining fuel prices, asserting that global trends impact local pricing structures. They have urged the public to understand these complexities in the context of a fluctuating global economy.

Furthermore, the government has indicated plans to engage with stakeholders in the energy sector to discuss ways to mitigate the impact on consumers. Officials have suggested that long-term strategies are needed to stabilise fuel prices, including exploring alternative energy sources and reducing reliance on imports to cushion against external price shocks.

As the debate surrounding fuel prices continues, the government remains under scrutiny, with citizens and opposition parties alike keenly observing the situation. The upcoming decisions and actions taken by the government may significantly influence public perception and economic conditions in the coming months, as the nation grapples with the realities of rising inflation and its implications for society at large.

The Congress leadership is convening a pivotal meeting regarding the political scenario in Karnataka, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar called to Delhi for discussions. Scheduled for Tuesday at the residence of party president Mallikarjun Kharge, the gathering will also include Rahul Gandhi. This meeting is intended to address the leadership dynamics in Karnataka and the party’s strategic approach ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.

Sources indicate that the Congress high command perceives a pressing need for a political and governance overhaul to enhance administration and service delivery in Karnataka. This reassessment comes at a significant time, as Shivakumar was previously assured that the leadership question would be revisited following the Kerala elections.

Potential Scenarios for Karnataka Governance

One option being considered is a cabinet reshuffle that would maintain the current leadership framework while attempting to improve governance. This approach aims to achieve social and political balance through better representation for Ahinda groups, which include minorities, backwards classes, and Dalits. It would also involve removing underperforming ministers and enhancing governance perceptions. Reports suggest that Shivakumar’s recommendations might be integrated into this restructuring, indicating a cooperative rather than a unilateral modification.

Another potential scenario involves a more drastic change in leadership, where Shivakumar may assume the chief ministerial role while Siddaramaiah might transition to the Rajya Sabha. This would likely necessitate a significant cabinet reshuffle to accommodate factions from both leaders’ camps. Such a move reflects a sensitivity within the party regarding leadership transitions, as internal stakeholders weigh the implications of this shift.

A third, albeit less probable, scenario suggests that Kharge himself may emerge as an alternative consensus candidate if faction negotiations fail to yield an agreement. Although he has long expressed an interest in leading Karnataka, this would necessitate a noteworthy adjustment in the national leadership structure of the Congress, requiring a recalibration of strategies by Rahul Gandhi and senior party officials.

Concurrent Electoral Developments

The ongoing discussions about leadership coincide with critical electoral appointments in Karnataka. Elections for three Rajya Sabha seats are scheduled, with nominations closing on June 8, along with elections to nine Legislative Council seats. The process of candidate selection is anticipated to instigate more internal negotiations and further discussions surrounding factional interests.

The political environment in Karnataka has been particularly charged, especially since Congress recently completed half of its term in the state. Supporters of Shivakumar have voiced their backing for him to assume the Chief Minister’s position, arguing that a power-sharing agreement was pledged when the party gained power. Shivakumar has largely refrained from making definitive statements on this topic, often saying that “time will answer” questions regarding leadership.

Following the Congress’s success in Kerala, discussions have accelerated in Karnataka regarding party leadership and future strategies. Given this backdrop, the upcoming meeting in Delhi is anticipated to be more than a routine assessment, as the Congress leadership strives to navigate the complexities of caste balances, factional struggles, and the preparations necessary for the upcoming Assembly elections.

The youth wing of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has sharply criticised the Indian National Congress, accusing it of engaging in “parasitic politics” after ending its long-standing alliance with the DMK following the 2026 Assembly elections.

The strongly worded resolution was passed on Saturday and reflected growing tensions between the two parties after Congress decided to part ways despite years of electoral cooperation and organisational support from the DMK.

DMK Alleges Betrayal After Years of Support

According to the resolution, Congress leaders were able to secure electoral victories and positions of power largely because of the DMK’s cadre strength and campaign machinery. The youth wing claimed that Congress had repeatedly relied on DMK workers during elections while struggling to mobilise its own grassroots support effectively.

“Previous elections saw Congress participate in the DMK-led alliance, resulting in numerous successful candidates,” the resolution stated. “While Congress struggled to energise its own cadre, it was the tireless efforts of DMK workers that ensured Congress victories.”

The statement further accused Congress of abandoning the alliance immediately after benefitting politically from it.

Tensions Rise After Election Outcome

The fallout reportedly intensified after the 2026 Assembly election results, when Congress ended its association with the DMK and two Congress MLAs were inducted into the new government led by Chief Minister Vijay.

The DMK youth wing described the move as politically unethical and accused Congress of showing “no gratitude” toward the alliance that had supported its growth in the state.

“After benefiting from this support, Congress shifted its allegiance overnight, without even a note of thanks,” the resolution alleged. “In their pursuit of power, they abandoned political decorum.”

Questions Over Opposition Unity

The political split has also raised concerns regarding the future of opposition unity and the weakening of the INDIA bloc in Tamil Nadu. Political observers believe the breakdown of the alliance could reshape coalition equations ahead of future elections.

The development marks a major shift in Tamil Nadu politics, with both parties now appearing headed toward a more confrontational political relationship.

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay, has recently declared the expansion of his cabinet, appointing seven ministers from the Dalit community. This move is seen as a significant step towards inclusivity and representation in the state’s governance. The new cabinet members are expected to address issues pertinent to their communities, bringing much-needed attention to socio-economic challenges faced by Dalits.

This cabinet reshuffle comes in the wake of a reconfiguration of political alliances, which has seen the Congress party regain a foothold in the Tamil Nadu government after a hiatus of fifty-nine years. The Congress party’s inclusion is anticipated to enhance collaborative governance and bring a diverse political perspective to the cabinet.

The appointment of Dalit ministers marks an important milestone in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, as it reflects the Chief Minister’s commitment to uplifting marginalised communities. Each appointee brings unique experiences and backgrounds, which could potentially influence policy-making and public welfare initiatives geared towards development.

Significance of Dalit Representation in Government

Dalit representation in government is a critical aspect of the democratic process. It provides a platform for voices that have historically been silenced or overlooked. The new ministers are expected to advocate for policies that will improve education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for the Dalit community. Their active participation in governance may lead to significant policy changes that prioritise social justice and equity.

Furthermore, the representation of Dalits in high governmental positions can inspire younger generations within these communities to aspire for leadership roles. This could contribute to a gradual shift in societal perceptions and norms, fostering an environment of greater acceptance and integration.

The commitment to incorporate members from various socio-economic backgrounds within the cabinet can enhance community trust in the government. It showcases an understanding of the diverse complexities affected by caste and contributes to a more holistic approach to governance.

Political Landscape Following the Cabinet Expansion

The political dynamics in Tamil Nadu are shifting as the Congress party’s return to power signals potential changes in party coalitions and alliances. The partnership with Chief Minister Vijay could reshape the policies and priorities of the state government, impacting various sectors, from agriculture to education.

Observers indicate that this collaboration may also influence future electoral strategies, as both parties will likely seek to solidify their base by addressing the needs of various demographic groups. This coalition’s success will depend on its ability to execute policies that resonate with the populace and address long-standing grievances.

In summary, the expansion of the cabinet serves as a reflection of evolving political narratives in Tamil Nadu. The inclusion of Dalit ministers, alongside the reestablishment of the Congress party in governance, suggests a concerted effort towards a more inclusive and representative government. The upcoming months will be critical in assessing how these changes translate into tangible impacts for the state’s citizens.

The Congress party has initiated the government formation process in Kerala, following a significant victory in the recent assembly elections. In a strategic move, the party has designated Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik as observers. Their primary role will be to gather insights from newly-elected MLAs regarding the selection of the state’s Chief Minister.

In the elections, Congress secured 63 out of 140 seats in the Kerala assembly, marking a decisive defeat for the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), which had maintained power for the preceding decade. The party’s coalition partners also performed well, with the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) winning 22 seats.

Maken and Wasnik are expected to engage with the Congress MLAs to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of their views, which will influence the decision-making process regarding the Chief Minister’s appointment. This initiative represents an early step in cementing the leadership structure within the newly elected assembly.

Rahul Gandhi Congratulates Party Leaders and Workers

On May 1, 2023, prominent Congress leader Rahul Gandhi extended his congratulations to the leaders and workers of the United Democratic Front (UDF) for their achievement in the Kerala assembly elections. He expressed eagerness to visit the state soon, highlighting his gratitude towards the electorate for their confidence in the Congress-led coalition.

In a statement shared on X, Gandhi acknowledged the decisiveness of the mandate received by the UDF. He articulated the party’s commitment to harnessing Kerala’s talent and potential, underscoring the UDF government’s vision for the state. “Thank you to my brothers and sisters in Kerala for a truly decisive mandate,” he stated, also encouraging efforts to maximise the advantages that the region has to offer.

Gandhi’s message was one of optimism for the future, as he noted the potential within Kerala and the UDF’s readiness to build upon it. He looks forward to reconnecting with local constituents and emphasised the importance of collaborative governance in achieving developmental objectives.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Thanks Voters and Party Workers

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also expressed her appreciation for the support shown by the people of Kerala towards the UDF during the assembly elections. She reaffirmed the party’s commitment to serving the electorate with sincerity and humility, promising that their efforts will focus on fulfilling the commitments made.

On X, she highlighted the UDF’s clean sweep in the Wayanad district, where all seven seats were won. This outcome was a testament to the renewed faith placed in the UDF by the constituents of Wayanad. She remarked, “Thank you for your faith and for your overwhelming support,” expressing hopes that the party’s gratitude will manifest in meaningful governance over the next five years.

Vadra acknowledged the dedication of party workers, attributing their hard work as a critical factor in securing the victory. She commended their relentless spirit in advocating for a united and progressive Kerala and conveyed her wishes for their continued resolve in serving the people of the state.

The Congress party has marked a notable triumph in Kerala amid ongoing trends in vote counting as of May 4. However, this success is overshadowed by the disappointing outcomes the INDIA bloc faced in Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Puducherry. While Congress leaders savoured their achievement, the performances of their allies in other states raised fears regarding their national appeal.

In Kerala, the United Democratic Front (UDF), led by Congress, has taken the opportunity to celebrate as projections indicate a potential landslide victory. Key figures from the party, including KC Venugopal, Ramesh Chennithala, and Shashi Tharoor, gathered at the party office in Thiruvananthapuram to recognise their gains. Joseph expressed gratitude towards the people of Kerala for their support, remarking that the outcome was a clear rejection of the Left Democratic Front’s policies.

Congress has obtained leads in over 80 seats, considerably surpassing the majority mark in the 140-seat Kerala Legislative Assembly. However, the celebrations were dampened by the overall picture of the alliance at the national level, indicating challenges ahead.

Mixed Results Across Other States Highlight Weaknesses in the Alliance

In Tamil Nadu, the newly established Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has made significant strides, emerging as a formidable contender against the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The party is currently leading in 108 seats, which reflects a potential shift in local political dynamics. Meanwhile, the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) is trailing in third place, projected to secure around 50 seats compared to 159 in 2021.

Congress, as part of the SPA, has managed to lead in five seats but is significantly lagging compared to past results. The situation is similarly concerning in Assam, where Congress leads in the 24 seats it won in the previous elections, but struggles to make further headway, with its coalition working towards securing 37 seats in total.

Congress’ Assam President Gaurav Gogoi, making his assembly election debut, is currently trailing in Jorhat by over 9,000 votes. The performance of the Congress party in both these states exemplifies the challenges it faces in retaining support from the electorate.

BJP’s Growing Influence and TMC’s Struggles in West Bengal

In West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which has contested the elections independently, is currently in second place with leads in 90 seats. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is dominating, reportedly leading in around 170 constituencies. This trend signifies a potential transformation in political engagement in a state where the BJP has traditionally struggled.

Despite not winning any seats, Congress holds a historical significance in West Bengal, having not been in power since the 1960s. Former state president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s attempt to bolster support in Baharampur is currently unsuccessful, as he trails BJP’s candidate, underlining the diminishing role of Congress in this region.

In the Union Territory of Puducherry, the BJP has managed to secure a lead in a single seat, with party leader P Karthikeyan maintaining a narrow margin. This illustrates the party’s ongoing efforts to extend its influence in areas previously dominated by regional parties.

The government has firmly dismissed the accusations made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding the proposed Great Nicobar infrastructure project. Gandhi has referred to the initiative as a “crime against nature,” asserting that it poses a significant threat to the environment. In response, the Union Ministry of Environment clarified that the project is of “strategic national importance” and is designed to enhance India’s maritime presence as well as its economic and security interests in the Indo-Pacific region.

Following Gandhi’s remarks on Wednesday, the ministry stated that the project at Campbell Bay in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands aims to integrate development with the protection of ecological systems and the indigenous populations. The ministry emphasised that it is committed to achieving a balance between economic growth and environmental conservation.

Rahul Gandhi’s comments labelled the infrastructure plan as one of the “biggest scams” that could lead to severe destruction of natural and tribal heritage. He claimed that approximately 160 square kilometres of pristine rainforest would be compromised, urging that the developments are misleadingly presented as progressive. In stark contrast, the governmental response outlined the ecological and social safeguards incorporated into the planning.

Details of the Great Nicobar Project

The ambitious project involves extensive infrastructure initiatives aimed at establishing Great Nicobar as a key economic and maritime hub. Key components include the construction of an International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) with a capacity to handle 14.2 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), a new international airport designed for peak-hour traffic of 4,000 passengers, and a 450 MVA gas and solar power plant. Additionally, a township covering 16,610 hectares is in the planning stages.

The government has stated that these developments are intended to support port-led economic growth and to position Great Nicobar as an essential logistics and connectivity centre in the region. Environmental considerations remain at the forefront of the project’s planning, with reassurances that no communities will be displaced, particularly those of the Shompen and Nicobarese tribal groups.

Concerns regarding deforestation have been addressed, noting that only 1.82 per cent of the total forest cover in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will be affected. The estimated number of trees that might need to be felled stands at approximately 7.11 lakh across 49.86 square kilometres, which will be executed in phases to minimise environmental impact. Furthermore, the project has acquired environmental clearance under the Environmental Impact Assessment Notification of 2006, with numerous conditions focusing on pollution control and biodiversity conservation.

Reactions from Rahul Gandhi and Indigenous Communities

During his visit to Campbell Bay on April 26, Rahul Gandhi expressed concerns over the environmental implications of the Great Nicobar Project. He described the region’s forests as ecologically invaluable and remarked that the project threatens to undermine natural heritage. Gandhi asserted that these ancient forests are irreplaceable and warned that the ongoing developments constitute significant ecological harm.

Following discussions with the Nicobarese tribal community and settler groups, he claimed that many residents had voiced apprehensions regarding environmental risks, a lack of transparency, and perceived neglect of tribal rights. Emphasising the potential consequences, Gandhi has labelled the project a “wholesale theft” of ecological resources, urging national awareness about the issue.

Furthermore, he reiterated that the ongoing initiatives are detrimental to both Adivasi communities and settlers, potentially leading to their displacement. He called for a collective recognition of the situation, emphasising that it represents one of the most significant threats to India’s natural and tribal heritage. Gandhi has advocated for a dialogue in Parliament to bring attention to these critical matters affecting both the environment and indigenous communities.
