A patient undergoing treatment at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow reportedly died by suicide after slitting his throat with a blade on hospital grounds. Authorities stated that the individual was battling liver cancer and had been receiving treatment at the facility for nearly one month.

According to police officials, the patient was under considerable mental strain due to his prolonged illness and the escalating financial demands of his treatment. The alarming incident unfolded inside the hospital, resulting in a critical injury to the patient.

Hospital staff were alerted when they found him in a severe condition, leading to an urgent response from medical personnel. Despite their efforts to administer emergency care, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after the incident.

Identification and Background of the Deceased

The deceased has been identified as Mushtaq Ali, a 61-year-old resident of Basti district. His ongoing struggle with liver cancer and the associated treatment costs created a distressing situation for him, reportedly contributing to his mental anguish prior to the tragic event.

The incident has caused significant panic among hospital patients, their attendants, and the medical staff. Security personnel responded swiftly by cordoning off the area to prevent further chaos as authorities arrived to manage the situation.

Immediately after being informed of the situation, local police officers reached the hospital. Following standard protocols, the body of the deceased was taken into custody and sent for a post-mortem examination to clarify the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the death.

Investigation Underway

Investigators are currently looking into all dimensions of the case, notably focusing on how the patient was able to acquire a blade within the hospital, despite established security measures. Statements from hospital staff, family members, and other individuals present at the time are being collected to facilitate a comprehensive examination of the events leading up to the incident.

Authorities indicated that the patient had been experiencing heightened distress for some time, exacerbated by the progression of his illness and the increasing financial pressures. The police have stated that additional information will surface as the investigation carries on.

All necessary legal formalities are being adhered to, and an extensive inquiry into the matter is currently in progress. This unfortunate occurrence highlights the challenges faced by patients battling severe medical conditions, particularly concerning mental health and financial stability.

Firoz Merchant is a prominent Indian entrepreneur and humanitarian based in Dubai. He established the Pure Gold Group in 1989, transforming it into a leading jewellery retail chain boasting over 170 outlets across 13 countries. Merchant’s philanthropic endeavors, however, extend beyond business, focusing significantly on humanitarian causes and debt settlement initiatives for prisoners within the UAE.

Initiative for Releasing Insolvent Inmates

Launched in 2008, Merchant’s charitable initiative has successfully facilitated the release of more than 20,000 inmates who were imprisoned due to financial burdens. This program operates in collaboration with local authorities and is supported by the Khalifa Foundation, impacting various emirates such as Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, and Ras Al Khaimah. With the onset of Ramadan 2026, 497 inmates have already regained their freedom, while more cases are currently under consideration for release during the holy month. In the previous year, the initiative saw significant outcomes, with 2,972 inmates from over 50 nationalities being released, and approximately Dhs2.4 million earmarked for debt settlement. Additionally, in efforts to facilitate the reintegration of deserving individuals, return airfare has been provided to enable them to return to their home countries.

Healthcare Support Extension

In an expansion of his philanthropic efforts, Merchant has introduced a healthcare component to this year’s Ramadan campaign. On February 18, coinciding with the start of the holy month, he engaged with officials from the Cancer Patient Care Society in Abu Dhabi to discuss pathways for offering financial aid to cancer patients encumbered by rising treatment costs. His prior contributions include a Dhs1 million donation in 2025 aimed at covering dialysis expenses for 11 patients in critical need of financial assistance. This year’s initiative uniquely integrates two essential areas of support: addressing the release of individuals imprisoned due to unpaid debts while simultaneously enhancing healthcare support for patients battling severe medical conditions.

Impact of Merchant’s Philanthropy

The Ramadan campaign of 2026 demonstrates a dual approach in philanthropy, emphasizing both inmate release and healthcare support. Through these efforts, Firoz Merchant exemplifies how private sector philanthropy can contribute significantly to social welfare initiatives in the UAE. The combination of addressing financial constraints faced by individuals in detention and aiding those with healthcare needs indicates a comprehensive approach aimed at alleviating hardship within the community.

Cancer is a disease which is still giving a major challenge to medical science globally in terms of timely detection and complete cure. Also, treatment for cancer costs a bomb. To help fund the treatment of cancer including their counseling and adequate nutrition, to offer a better life to cancer patients, to spread awareness around unhealthy lifestyle practices and the need for regular check up and early detection, a lot of Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR initiatives are regularly undertaken in India.

World Cancer Day is observed globally on the 4th of February every year. The theme for this year’s World Cancer Day was “United by Unique”. This theme emphasized a people-centered approach to cancer care, placing individuals and their stories at the heart of the conversation.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives play a vital role in supporting cancer treatment in India. Several organizations and companies are contributing to this cause through various programs and partnerships. Learn about some of the major CSR initiatives taking care of cancer patients and supporting treatment in India.

Free Cancer Screening Program Launched for Underprivileged Women in Shirdi

With a view to promote preventive healthcare for underprivileged women in rural Maharashtra, the Hinduja Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the 110-year-old Hinduja Group, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dr. Mane Medical Foundation & Research Centre, a reputed Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) based in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. The partnership marks the launch of a comprehensive cancer screening and awareness program, offered entirely free of cost, in Shirdi and other districts of Maharashtra.

This grassroots initiative aims to screen 10,000 ultra-poor women for cervical and breast cancer by December 2025. The first screening camp was held on June 8 at Rahuri, 60 kms from Shirdi, where nearly 350 women were screened.

Focused on early detection and timely intervention, the program addresses a critical gap in access to preventive healthcare for marginalised groups who often go undiagnosed due to financial and geographical barriers.

Dr. Mane Medical Foundation will lead on-ground implementation, supported by community outreach efforts. All women will undergo Pap Smear and Clinical Breast Examination (CBE), and where needed, additional health checks including Haemoglobin, Blood Sugar, and Cholesterol tests.

CSR of NSE: Multispecialty Hospital Block and Bone Marrow Transplant Centre at ACTREC, Tata Memorial Hospital, Navi Mumbai

It will also act as an Out-Patient Department (OPD) unit for the entire ACTREC campus where 3 more buildings, besides the NSE block, are planned for cancer treatment.

The NSE facility will provide general and super-specialty services to support cancer patients with co-morbidities and will house a dedicated 60-bed Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) centre which will be the largest in the country and one of the largest in South Asia. It will offer this life-saving treatment free or at highly subsidized costs.

Bandhan Bank extends CSR support to Assam Cancer Care Foundation

Bandhan Bank, a pan-India universal Bank, recently announced the extension of its CSR grant to Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF), a partnership between the Government of Assam and Tata Trusts.

Bengaluru, India: In a significant move to drive awareness about precision oncology as an essential, accessible and affordable treatment plan for lung cancer treatment, LuNGS Alliance, an initiative led by the Cancer Research and Statistic Foundation (CRSF), has announced free Lung NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) biomarker testing for lung cancer patients across India. This initiative is backed by leading pharmaceutical companies AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and Roche, with 4baseCare serving as the official lab partner.

The TARGT First Solid test by 4baseCare offers a comprehensive analysis of 72 commonly mutated genes, identifying actionable biomarkers that enable personalized treatment plans based on a patient’s unique genomic profile. This cutting-edge test identifies mutations corresponding to approved therapies by FDA and NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network), empowering oncologists to provide tailored, more effective treatments that can significantly improve patient outcomes. The primary goal of this initiative is to bridge the gap between innovative cancer care and its accessibility. By offering zero-cost biomarker testing, LuNGS Alliance ensures that financial constraints do not prevent patients from receiving the most advanced cancer treatment available.

According to a study published in The Lancet Regional Health, lung cancer accounts for an estimated 72,510 new cases and 66,279 deaths annually in India. The high mortality rate highlights the urgent need for personalized treatment approaches over the conventional one-size-fits-all methods. Biomarker testing addresses this challenge by offering targeted therapies based on a patient’s unique genetic mutations.

Dr. Kumar Prabhash from Cancer Research and Statistic Foundation said, “We are committed to ensuring lung cancer patients in India have access to effective, targeted treatments. With precision oncology, we aim to make life-saving innovations accessible and transform cancer care nationwide.”

Hitesh Goswami, CEO and Co-Founder, 4baseCare, said, “Advanced NGS-based biomarker testing should be standard for every lung cancer patient. This initiative brings us closer to democratizing precision medicine and making a real difference in patients’ lives !

How to Avail the Free Test

Lung cancer patients are eligible to receive one free NGS biomarker test through the initiative.

Cervical cancer is a silent killer targeting women in India. Even though most commonly diagnosed in women between the ages of 35 and 44, it can affect women of all age groups. At least 75,000 Indian women die of cervical cancer annually with the disease contributing to approximately 6–29% of all cancers in women.

India accounts for nearly one-third of the world’s cervical cancer deaths due to a lack of awareness and inadequate screening practices. According to data from The Indian Express, between 2017 and 2022, a total of 3,941 women in Maharashtra died from cervical cancer, with over 657 deaths per year on average.

What is Cervical Cancer?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines cervical cancer as a disease caused by abnormal cells growing in the lining of the cervix. Cervical cancer develops in a woman’s cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina.

Almost all cervical cancer cases (99%) are linked to infection with high-risk Human Papillomaviruses (HPV), an extremely common virus transmitted through sexual contact. Although most infections with Human Papillomavirus or HPV resolve spontaneously and cause no symptoms, persistent infection can cause cervical cancer in women.

The WHO says, “With a comprehensive approach to prevent, screen and treat, cervical cancer can be eliminated as a public health problem within a generation.”

India accounts for 27 percent of the global deaths due to cervical cancer

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women across the world according to the WHO. In 2022, an estimated 660,000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer worldwide and about 350,000 women died from the disease.

“Cervical cancer, which is caused by HPV or Human Papillomavirus, is a serious health concern in India in the present day. One woman succumbs to this cancer every 8 minutes. What is surprising is that more than 1 lakh 23,000 cases are detected every year. Talking about global deaths, India accounts for 27 percent of the global deaths,” Dr. Deepika Chandhok, Founder President Swasthya Vriksha Foundation told The CSR Journal.

“Awareness about cervical cancer is an absolute need of the hour today. There are a lot of questions in people’s minds such as what cervical cancer is, how it happens, how it can be prevented, how it can be cured and what role a vaccine plays in its prevention. It is necessary to address these questions and to bust the myths related to cervical cancer. The HPV vaccine is like a sanjeevani booti for cervical cancer prevention which has been approved by the World Health Organization. Crores of women aged 20 or above are being safely administered this vaccine across the world,” she informed.

Cervical cancer is curable

Cervical cancer is one of the most successfully treatable forms of cancer, as long as it is detected early and managed effectively. Cancers diagnosed in late stages can also be controlled with appropriate treatment and palliative care.

This form of cancer is preventable through routine screenings and the HPV vaccine. Effective primary (HPV vaccination) and secondary prevention approaches (screening for, and treating precancerous lesions) can prevent most cervical cancer cases.

Government of India’s initiative to prevent cervical cancer

The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved the HPV vaccine and recommends it as part of routine vaccinations in all countries. The WHO’s primary target population is girls aged 9–14 years. Despite being preventable, this form of cancer unfortunately has a high mortality rate in our country.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, during the interim budget presentation in February 2024, announced the Centre’s plan to include the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer in the national immunization programme.

The vaccination programme will be for girls in the age group of 9 to 14 years for the prevention of cervical cancer. However, almost a year later this is yet to be implemented.

Currently, HPV vaccines that are available in India include Gardasil (quadrivalent) and Cervarix (bivalent), which cost Rs 2,800 and Rs 3,299 per dose, respectively. Cervavac is India’s first locally produced vaccine, created by the Serum Institute of India.

Risk factors for cervical cancer

There are certain risk factors that make a person who has a high-risk HPV infection of the cervix to develop cervical cancer. These include:

Family history

This makes a person more vulnerable to cervical cancer.

Weakened immune system

This can lower the body’s ability to fight an HPV infection. HPV infections are more likely to be persistent and progress to cancer in people who have a weakened immune system. Normally, HIV infection and certain diseases weaken our immune system. Certain medicines also suppress our immune response.

Smoking

Both active and passive smoking increases cervical cancer risk.

Reproductive factors

The use of oral contraceptives (birth control pills) and giving birth to many children can increase the risk of cervical cancer.

Obesity

Cervical cancer screening may be more difficult in those with obesity, leading to lower detection of precancers and a higher risk of cancer.

DES

Diethylstilbestrol (DES) is a synthetic form of estrogen, a female hormone that was prescribed to pregnant women in the United States between 1940 and 1971. DES was used to prevent miscarriage and premature labor but was later found to be ineffective. DES exposure increases the risk of developing a rare form of cervical cancer called clear cell adenocarcinoma by 40 times.

Being exposed to DES in the womb is an independent risk factor for a type of cervical cancer called clear cell adenocarcinoma. Women whose mothers took DES while pregnant have an increased risk of cervical cell abnormalities and clear cell adenocarcinoma of the vagina and cervix.

How to prevent cervical cancer?

As discussed above, cervical cancer is preventable and curable if diagnosed early. Following are some ways in which cervical cancer can be prevented:

HPV vaccine

The HPV vaccine is highly effective at preventing HPV infection, cervical cancer, and other HPV-related cancers. The American Cancer Society recommends that children start receiving the HPV vaccine as early as 9 years. The vaccine is given in three doses over about nine months, but children under 15 only need two doses.

Regular screenings

Screening tests from time to time can help detect changes that could become precancer or cervical cancer. It is recommended that people aged 25–65 who have a cervix and are at average risk get a primary HPV should get screened every five years. If a primary HPV test isn’t available, co-testing (HPV testing plus a Pap test) every five years, or a Pap test alone can be done every three years. Irregular screening, often due to limited access in rural areas, is a problem in India.

Quitting smoking

Smoking increases the risk of precancerous conditions and cervical cancer. So, if you are a smoker, it is time to call it quits!

Safe sex and pregnancy

Using condoms during sex can help prevent cervical cancer. Condoms, which prevent some sexually transmitted diseases, can decrease the risk of HPV transmission. However, they do not completely prevent it. Therefore, exposure to HPV is still possible in areas that are not covered by the condom. Also, not having more than one sexual partner can reduce one’s risk of contracting the HPV virus. Multiple pregnancies may also increase the risk of cervical cancer.

Proper diet and workout

It is recommended that foods high in antioxidants and other cancer-fighting nutrients should be made a part of day-to-day diet. Diets high in saturated and trans fats, sugar, and sodium should be avoided. Studies show that working out for at least 30 minutes a week can help prevent cervical cancer.

Cervical Cancer Treatment

Cervical cancer treatment depends upon the stage of cancer and the patient’s health condition. In the early stage, cancerous tissues can be removed through surgery. Hysterectomy is used for more advanced cases, involving the removal of the uterus and cervix, while Radical hysterectomy may be required depending on the spread of the cancer. Other types of treatment include Radiation Therapy, Chemotherapy, Targeted Therapy and Immunotherapy.

Kolkata, India: In line with its sustained commitment to community welfare and corporate social responsibility, mPokket – India’s fastest-growing digital lender – has once again set a benchmark via its latest CSR initiative. Demonstrating compassion and solidarity, mPokket partnered with Roti On Wheels to distribute hot and hygienic meals to cancer patients and their families in Kolkata.

Through this collaboration, mPokket and Roti On Wheels is serving nutritious food such as freshly made Roti and Sabji, with fresh fruit, to help those in need, near Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute, Kolkata every Thursday and Friday. The teams have been providing approximately 300-400 meals per day, totaling 3000+ meals throughout the month.

This initiative aims to address the nutritional needs of more than 3000+ individuals and their families, who often face immense financial and emotional challenges during their arduous medical battles. By providing solace and sustenance, the teams hope to alleviate some of the burdens faced by the patients and their families while battling with cancer.

Ms Rajani Jalan, Director – CSR & People Relations, mPokket commented, “At mPokket, we believe in giving back to the communities we serve. Our partnership with Roti On Wheels highlights our commitment to social responsibility and to making a difference in people’s lives. It’s most pleasing to see the positive impact the initiative has had on the local community. Our aim is not just to be a responsible financial entity but also to act as a torchbearer of hope and support for needy communities. These efforts resonate with our core values and commitment to give back to society. Seeing the warm smiles and gratitude of the people we have helped is a profound reminder of the difference we can make.”

As part of its ongoing commitment to community welfare, mPokket plans to sustain its partnership with Roti On Wheels, ensuring that this meaningful programme remains a consistent source of support and sustenance for cancer patients and their families in Kolkata. A commendable initiative begun by Santosh Lalita Jain Foundation, Roti On Wheels operates mobile vehicles that traverse the slum areas of Greater Kolkata, providing hot and hygienic meals free of charge to approximately 2,000 people daily.

Cancer patients and their families often face immense financial and emotional burdens, making it difficult for them to access proper nutrition during their treatment. Through this ongoing partnership with Roti On Wheels, mPokket aims to address food insecurity. This initiative aligns well with organization’s ethos of empowering underprivileged communities and fostering a culture of social responsibility. As it continues to grow and expand, mPokket remains dedicated to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing challenges across India.
