Home Minister Amit Shah praised the contributions of Nitish Kumar during his tenure as Chief Minister of Bihar, describing it as a “golden chapter” in the state’s history. This acknowledgment came as Kumar filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections.

Shah noted that Kumar’s leadership had significantly impacted Bihar’s progress and emphasized the achievements made under his governance. “Under his leadership, numerous initiatives launched by Prime Minister Modi reached the people of Bihar,” Shah remarked. Kumar’s long tenure as Chief Minister, starting from 2005, has been marked by a focus on development, which Shah described as integral to the history of the state.

“Bihar’s CM also filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha. With this, after a long gap, he will once again enter national politics as a Rajya Sabha MP. Nitish Kumar served as CM of Bihar from 2005 until now. His tenure was truly glorious. This tenure will be written as a golden chapter in Bihar’s history, shaping the entire gamut of Bihar’s development… Throughout his long career as an MLA, MP, Chief Minister, and Union Minister, his kurta was never stained. His entire life was free from corruption charges,” Amit Shah said.

“For 11 years under PM Modi’s leadership, he made a significant contribution to Bihar’s progress in every way, and it was under his leadership that all of PM Modi’s initiatives reached the people of Bihar… He is once again returning to Delhi as a Rajya Sabha MP. I and all our NDA colleagues heartily welcome him, and his tenure as Chief Minister will always be remembered and respected by the people of Bihar,” the Home Minister added.

The statement comes as Bihar witnessed a huge political transition with incumbent Chief Minister Nitish Kumar filing nomination for the Rajya Sabha in PatnaApart from Nitish Kumar, other NDA candidates, including BJP Chief Nitin Nabin, RLM chief Upendra Kushwaha, BJP’s Shivesh Kumar and JD(U)’s Ram Nath Thakur, also filed their nominations for the Upper House.

Nitish Kumar’s Resurgence in National Politics

Nitish Kumar, having served multiple terms as Bihar’s Chief Minister, is poised to return to national politics as a Member of Parliament in the Upper House. His nomination signifies a renewed engagement in the national arena after a prolonged period in state leadership.

Kumar had earlier expressed his intention to enter the Rajya Sabha, stating, “I seek to become a member of the Rajya Sabha in the elections being held this time.” His commitment to collaborate for a developed Bihar remains steadfast, as he assured constituents of his continued partnership in governance.

NDA Candidates Join Nitish Kumar in Filing Nominations

Alongside Nitish Kumar, other candidates from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have also submitted their nominations for the Rajya Sabha elections. Notable candidates include BJP’s Nitin Nabin, RLM leader Upendra Kushwaha, and BJP’s Shivesh Kumar, as well as JD(U)’s Ram Nath Thakur. The collective nominations from various parties suggest a strategic approach towards maintaining influence in both state and national politics as the NDA prepares for the upcoming elections.

Opposition Responds to Kumar’s Political Maneuvering

The announcement of Nitish Kumar’s return to national politics has been met with skepticism from opposition leaders. Tejashwi Yadav voiced concerns about the potential motivations behind Kumar’s nomination, reiterating allegations that the BJP had plans to destabilize his leadership. Yadav remarked that the opposition had foreseen Kumar’s diminished power, suggesting that the NDA’s past election strategies were indicative of a planted agenda to undermine Kumar’s position. His comments reflect a broader sentiment among opposition factions regarding the dynamics of Bihar’s political landscape.

Nitish Kumar Reflects on His Tenure

Nitish Kumar has emphasized the integrity of his political journey, highlighting that throughout his extensive career as an MLA, MP, Chief Minister, and Union Minister, he has maintained a reputation of being free from corruption allegations. Addressing his recent nomination, he expressed a desire to continue working collaboratively for the betterment of Bihar and affirmed his support for the newly formed government. Kumar’s statement on social media reaffirmed his commitment to the state’s development and his partnership with the populace moving forward.

On March 5, significant political developments unfolded in Bihar as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar officially filed his nomination for a Rajya Sabha seat in Patna, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in attendance. Kumar, who is one of the longest-serving Chief Ministers in Bihar’s history, has previously indicated his intention to transition to the Rajya Sabha during this election cycle.

Alongside Kumar, other candidates from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) such as Upendra Kushwaha and BJP state president Nitin Nabin also presented their nominations for the Upper House.

Commitment to Collaborate on Bihar’s Development

Nitish Kumar, aged 75, expressed his commitment to supporting the new Cabinet and reaffirmed his dedication to working for a prosperous Bihar. Through a post on X, he stated, “I aim to become a member of the Rajya Sabha in this election. I assure you that my relationship with you will continue in the future, and my determination to cooperate for a developed Bihar will remain unwavering. The new government will receive my comprehensive cooperation and guidance.” This announcement has drawn attention from various political quarters, particularly from the opposition.

Opposition Responds to Kumar’s Announcement

In response to Kumar’s nomination, Tejashwi Yadav, opposition leader in Bihar, criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), asserting that this development validates his previous claims regarding Kumar’s precarious position. Yadav accused the BJP of employing manipulative tactics, suggesting that their election slogan, “2025 se 30 phir se Nitish,” was a guise for undermining Kumar’s leadership. “It is clear that the NDA used various tricks during the elections,” Yadav remarked, indicating that the alliance’s methodologies were questionable.

Yadav’s Assertions Regarding Political Maneuverings

Tejashwi Yadav elaborated on his concerns, arguing that Kumar’s shift to the Rajya Sabha is contrary to the will of the people in Bihar. He characterized the BJP as historically detrimental to its allies and accused the party of being opposed to the interests of backward classes, Dalits, and tribal communities. Yadav stated, “The BJP seeks a leader in Bihar who will merely act as a figurehead. This shift in power contradicts the sentiments of the populace. People are aware of the BJP’s strategies and true nature.” He also noted previous collaborations with Kumar, expressing sympathy for his political situation.

Concerns for Bihar’s Leadership

During his interactions with media personnel, Yadav reiterated his long-held view that the BJP has significantly influenced Kumar’s tenure. He stated metaphorically, “They have placed Nitish Kumar on a horse for a wedding but are conducting the rituals with someone else.” He maintained that Kumar’s desire to move to the Rajya Sabha reinforces their long-standing assertion that the BJP would not allow him to retain the Chief Minister’s position following the elections. Yadav expressed that this situation has now come to fruition.

On February 26, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated two Border Outposts (BOPs), Leti and Indarwa, located in the Kishanganj district of Bihar. This initiative aims to address and curb illegal infiltration in the Seemanchal region, marking an important advancement in enhancing security along the India-Nepal border. Officials responsible for the country’s internal security have indicated that these posts will bolster surveillance and address vulnerabilities associated with the porous border shared by India and Nepal.

Security Challenges at the India-Nepal Frontier

Kishanganj is situated within the sensitive Seemanchal area, which features a long and largely unfenced boundary with Nepal. The unique nature of this border permits free movement of people based on bilateral agreements, presenting both opportunities and security challenges. An anonymous official revealed that intelligence agencies have voiced concerns about issues such as cross-border smuggling, human trafficking, the circulation of counterfeit currency, and the entry of anti-social elements taking advantage of the open landscape.

Purpose of the New BOPs

The establishment of BOPs in Leti and Indarwa seeks to improve ground-level vigilance, particularly in regions identified as vulnerable due to riverine gaps, agricultural zones, and densely populated areas near the border. During the inauguration, the Home Minister emphasized the importance of this initiative in creating a “Seemanchal” free from infiltrators. Shah expressed that such infiltrators not only influence electoral processes but also detract from the intended benefits of welfare programs and represent a threat to national security.

Government Commitment to Addressing Infiltration

In his address, Shah reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicating infiltration, stating that the administration aims to remove infiltrators from voter lists and identify individuals to facilitate their expulsion from the country. He underscored the necessity of a nationwide campaign targeting illegal encroachments within 10 kilometers of borders as part of this initiative. Shah asserted that demographic changes stemming from this issue pose risks to a country’s cultural, historical, and geographical integrity.

Border Management and Infrastructure Enhancement

The two new BOPs will serve as the first line of defense in border management, operated by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), which is responsible for guarding the frontiers with Nepal and Bhutan. These posts will act as operational centers for continuous patrolling, information gathering, and collaboration with local police and central agencies. The newly constructed BOPs are equipped with modern facilities, including surveillance technology, communication systems, and mobility enhancements to improve response capabilities.

Broader Efforts to Modernize Border Security

Officials have noted that the Seemanchal region has been a focal point due to concerns regarding infiltration networks and illegal trade routes leveraged by organized crime syndicates. The strengthening of border infrastructure is deemed essential, not only for national security but also for maintaining law and order in nearby districts. The inauguration of Leti and Indarwa BOPs reflects the central government’s commitment to upgrading border management in sensitive areas.

Additional Projects and Infrastructure Developments

Alongside the inauguration of the BOPs, the Home Minister engaged with SSB personnel and announced various developmental projects valued at approximately Rs 170 crore aimed at enhancing facilities for border guarding forces. Furthermore, he revealed that 554 kilometers of roads under the India-Nepal border road project have been approved, with substantial progress made on 14 out of 18 segments. With a budget allocation of Rs 2,468 crore, nearly Rs 2,336 crore has already been utilized. Shah concluded that the completion of these roads would significantly improve the surveillance capabilities of SSB personnel.
