The Indian government has revised its immigration rules, specifically addressing the registration process for foreign nationals in the country. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced these modifications on June 2, 2026, through an official Gazette notification, effective immediately. One of the key adjustments allows individuals to register at any point before the end of 180 days from their arrival in India. This update replaces the previous requirement to register within 14 days following the 180-day mark.

While this extension offers greater convenience, the government has tightened protocols for late registrations. Under the new rules, registering beyond the specified time will only be allowed under ’emergent circumstances’, emphasising the government’s firm stance against non-compliance while still accommodating genuine situations.

Clarifications on Children and Citizenship

The revised regulations also provide clarity on the registration requirements for children with at least one Indian parent. In such cases, the registration obligation is waived if the parent aims to retain the child’s Indian citizenship as per the Citizenship Act, 1955. This adjustment is anticipated to alleviate confusion for families that include both Indian and foreign nationals.

Additionally, in instances where a child obtains foreign citizenship while living in India, the new rules obligate the parents to notify the Registration Officer within 30 days of this acquisition. This measure is intended to facilitate better tracking and documentation concerning the citizenship status of minors in India.

Moreover, the government has standardised reporting timelines under various provisions, which now necessitate compliance within a strict 24-hour timeframe. Although this requirement may seem technical, it is expected to enhance real-time compliance and improve tracking mechanisms.

Introduction of a Digital Appeals Mechanism

A significant feature of the recent amendments is the establishment of a digitised appeals process for those dissatisfied with decisions made by civil authorities. Individuals now have the option to submit appeals to the Commissioner of the Bureau of Immigration through a designated online portal within 30 days of receiving a decision. This initiative represents a move toward a more transparent and accessible method for addressing grievances.

The new rules also stipulate a clear timeline for handling these appeals. The Commissioner is required to issue a reasoned order and aims to complete the process within 60 days from the date the appeal is lodged. This framework aims to expedite proceedings while ensuring that all parties involved have the opportunity to present their case convincingly.

Officials suggest that these amendments form part of a broader strategy to modernise India’s immigration processes, balancing the need for facilitation alongside stringent enforcement. By streamlining procedural requirements, imposing stricter criteria for delays, and adopting a digital-first approach for appeals, the government aims to foster a more efficient and predictable immigration system.

These updates are expected to benefit foreign nationals, institutions, and administrative bodies by diminishing uncertainties, enhancing compliance, and fortifying oversight within immigration-related operations. The changes reflect a commitment to fostering a more coherent immigration framework while ensuring accountability and clarity.

The Chief Administrator of the Shree Jagannath Temple, Arabinda K Padhee, confirmed that extensive preparations are in progress for the upcoming Snana Purnima and Ratha Yatra, significant events in the temple’s calendar. On June 1, he reported that a crucial meeting had been convened to solidify the rituals and schedule for these celebrations, which attract thousands of devotees every year.

Padhee elaborated on the discussions surrounding operational procedures and administrative arrangements that are essential for the smooth observance of both festivals. He noted that with the current focus on preparations, the inventory process of the Ratna Bhandar has been temporarily halted, with plans to resume work after the festivals.

Details of the Ratha Yatra Festival

The Jagannath Rath Yatra is a prominent annual Hindu festival celebrated in Puri, Odisha. During this event, the deities—Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra—are transported from their temple in ornate chariots to the Gundicha Temple, known as their aunt’s residence. This event is of considerable significance within the Hindu community, honouring the mythical journey of Lord Jagannath to his birthplace.

For the duration of the Rath Yatra, a large number of devotees gather to pull the chariots of the three deities, which are moved a short distance to the Gundicha Temple. The deities remain there for a week, engaging in rituals and festivities before making the return journey known as Bahuda Yatra. This concluding segment of the festival is a time of profound spirituality and cultural importance, as devotees celebrate the return of the chariots back to the Jagannath Temple.

During the celebrations, the ‘Adhara Panna’ ritual holds a special place, representing one of the most significant events of the Rath Yatra. This involves the offering of a sacred drink, which includes milk, sugar, and other components, presented to the deities in intricately designed earthen pots crafted to resemble the mouth of the Lord. The ritual occurs on the chariots, with the pots being shattered post-offering as an act of devotion.

The Historical Significance of Shri Jagannath Temple

The Shri Jagannath Temple is celebrated as one of the most esteemed Hindu temples in India, dedicated to Lord Jagannath, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu. It serves as a major pilgrimage destination, attracting devotees from across the nation. The temple, constructed in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva, showcases the exquisite architectural style of Kalinga, reflecting the historical and cultural essence of the region.

As the temple gears up for the festivities, the preparations signify not only the devotion of the local community but also highlight the rich traditions that form an integral part of the temple’s history. The events promise to be a vibrant celebration, honouring centuries-old customs and practices that have shaped the spiritual landscape of Puri.

In anticipation of the celebrations, the temple administration is committed to ensuring that the experience for all attendees remains both secure and enjoyable. With meticulous planning and arrangements, the Jagannath Temple aims to uphold the sanctity and grandeur of the Ratha Yatra and Snana Purnima for everyone involved.

The iconic Rajmandir Cinema is celebrating its golden jubilee today and to mark this milestone, five popular Bollywood movies are being screened for free. Among the movies being screened are ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!’, ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’, ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’, ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ and ‘Chupke Chupke’.

The iconic Rajmandir cinema began operating in 1976 at MI Road in Jaipur, Rajasthan. For decades Rajmandir has been one of Jaipur’s prominent landmarks. Known for its unique architecture, larger-than-life interiors and distinctive lighting, Rajmandir has always been a favourite destination for both domestic and foreign tourists.

Retained charm despite OTT

Even though OTT has taken over, Rajmandir continues to retain its charm, said Kishore Kala, finance manager at Rajmandir. “Rajmandir has witnessed every phase of the entertainment industry and continues to remain a key attraction of the city.” He shared that some movies, like ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!’, ran the longest with 500 days.

An officer-in-charge at Rajmandir, Ankur Khandelwal noted that watching a movie at Rajmandir is more than just a business venture. “This cinema has never been seen merely as a business. It is an emotional landmark for Jaipur and we are committed to preserving it as a tourist attraction.”

Distributors call Rajmandir Rajasthan’s pride

Well-known distributor Raj Bansal called Rajmandir the pride of Rajasthan and the top single-screen theatre in the country. Another distributor Sanjay Chettar noted that screening a movie at Rajmandir is every distributor’s dream and requirement because of its legacy. “Every distributor wants their film to be screened at Rajmandir because of its legacy and grandeur.”

Sharing their emotions with the CSR Journal, a tourist from Australia said, “We have come to Rajmandir not because of cinema, but because of the experience and royalty associated with the name.”

A tourist from Uttar Pradesh has reportedly gone missing while trekking on the Pindari Glacier route in the Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand. The missing individual has been identified as 35-year-old Abhishek Chauhan, a resident of Saharanpur. His disappearance has triggered extensive search efforts that involve multiple agencies, including the police, Forest Department, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

According to reports, Chauhan began his trek on May 28, departing from Khati alongside a local guide, Anand Ram. The duo was navigating the scenic yet challenging terrain before separating during their return journey on May 29. When they reached the Maliyadhaud area, Chauhan allegedly requested Ram to proceed ahead while he took a moment to rest.

Concern arose when Chauhan did not reappear after a significant duration. His guide went back to locate him but was unsuccessful in finding Chauhan. After several attempts to locate the missing trekker, Anand Ram returned to Khati village that evening and informed Forest Department ranger Dauli Dobhal about the situation.

Rescue Teams Navigate Difficult Conditions

In response to the alert from the ranger, numerous teams comprising police personnel, SDRF, and members of the Forest Department were deployed to initiate a coordinated search operation. Authorities have focused their efforts on combing the trekking route, nearby forested areas, and other possible locations where Chauhan might have gone.

The search operations are taking place in challenging terrain, with the situation complicated by adverse weather conditions typical of high-altitude regions. Rescue teams are persistently working despite facing these obstacles, demonstrating a commitment to locating the missing tourist.

Officials indicated that all potential angles in the case are being considered. Continuous efforts are being made to trace Chauhan as quickly as possible. Local authorities are also actively cooperating with villagers and trekking guides who are familiar with the Pindari Glacier region to gather useful information that could aid the search.

Authorities Appeal for Assistance from the Public

Pratap Singh Nagarkoti, the Station House Officer, confirmed that the search operation is ongoing, with teams dedicatedly working around the clock to find Chauhan. Officials have reached out to the public, encouraging anyone who may have information regarding the missing trekker to contact the authorities immediately.

As the search continues, the community remains hopeful for the safe return of Abhishek Chauhan. The incident highlights the challenges that can arise during trekking expeditions, particularly in remote and rugged terrains. All agencies involved are determined to utilise their resources effectively to resolve this distressing situation.

As of June 1, 2026, no further updates have been provided regarding the status of the search operation. The case remains a pressing concern for local authorities, residents, and the family of the missing tourist.

This influx includes more than 32,000 foreign tourists, highlighting the park’s growing appeal as a premier destination for nature enthusiasts.

Official statistics reveal that a total of 5,48,319 tourists visited the park between April 1, 2025, and May 28, 2026. This achievement has prompted Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, to commend the positive impact of conservation-led development on economic growth within the region.

In a recent statement, Chief Minister Sarma noted that the fiscal year 2025-26 has marked the highest number of visitors in Kaziranga’s history, with increases in both local and international tourism. Comparatively, the park attracted 4.06 lakh visitors the previous year and only 1.55 lakh a decade ago.

Economic Growth Through Tourism Initiatives

The Chief Minister attributed the surge in visitors to Assam’s ongoing efforts to develop competitive tourism infrastructure. He highlighted that the rise in foreign tourist numbers, which jumped from 17,693 to 30,474 within a year, validates these initiatives. Sarma expressed his commitment to ensuring that nature protection and livelihood creation go hand in hand.

Efforts in conservation have also been notable, with the park recording years without rhino poaching, alongside improvements in rhino and golden tiger populations. Measures like the introduction of boat safaris, cycling trails, and community-led tourism programs are contributing to sustainable economic opportunities in the area.

Moreover, the forthcoming Kaziranga Elevated Corridor aims to enhance wildlife movement and overall connectivity, reinforcing the necessity of balancing development with conservation efforts. The Chief Minister articulated the government’s focus on preserving nature while simultaneously enhancing local economies.

International Recognition and Future Prospects

The park’s profile on the international stage has been elevated due to notable visits from dignitaries including Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and others. Ghosh mentioned that such visits contribute to Kaziranga being recognised globally, with the New York Times listing it as a must-visit destination.

Historical data indicates that tourism at Kaziranga was at 1,55,107 visitors during the 2016-17 season, illustrating a continuing upward trend. This growth is attributed to various new tourism initiatives, including bird safaris, cycling tours, and the recently launched “Kaziranga beyond National Park” programme.

Local businesses have also benefited from this boost in tourism, with hotels, restaurants, and shops reporting enhanced activity. New attractions, such as trekking opportunities in the region, are further supporting the park’s aim to provide economically beneficial and ecologically sustainable tourism experiences.

The situation in Manali highlights the challenges posed by an influx of tourists, particularly during the summer months. Recent social media footage showcased a traffic jam reportedly stretching 10 kilometres, compelling many to question whether their vacation was indeed enjoyable or more of a burden. This is not an isolated incident, as visitors have faced significant delays in the past, often stranded for hours due to heavy traffic.

Earlier this year, a severe traffic build-up, exacerbated by snow tourism, left many travellers immobilised for extended periods. Some individuals resorted to abandoning their vehicles and navigating on foot with luggage due to the extreme conditions. The growing popularity of Manali among diverse groups, including honeymooners and adventure seekers, has contributed to the problem, making it increasingly difficult for local infrastructure to accommodate the surge.

Sustained Convergence in Shimla

Shimla has become a prime destination for tourists across India, with reports indicating that around 70,000 vehicles entered the town within a mere 72 hours. In total, over 6.3 lakh vehicles were recorded within the month, raising significant concerns about traffic congestion. The colonial design of the town’s roads, which were not intended for the present volume of cars, only adds to the challenging situation.

The narrow roads and limited parking spaces in Shimla, coupled with a surge in demand during long weekends, have led to severe slowdowns, particularly on the Dhalli-Kufri road. Tourists seeking a respite from the heat often find themselves trapped in bumper-to-bumper traffic, contradicting their intent to enjoy a relaxing getaway.

It is ironic that the quest for peace and tranquility has resulted in individuals spending excessive time in their vehicles amidst exhausting traffic jams, effectively counteracting the purpose of their escape.

Challenges Faced by Darjeeling

Darjeeling maintains its picturesque allure, drawing tourists from across the nation; however, the peak season reveals underlying difficulties in managing visitor inflow. In recent weeks, the town has experienced not only severe traffic congestion but also water shortages, raising alarms among local residents and authorities alike.

Travel times between New Jalpaiguri station and Darjeeling have reportedly extended significantly, making what used to be a manageable journey increasingly daunting. The town’s infrastructure is under considerable strain, with narrow roads and concentrated tourist activity around popular destinations resulting in delays and bottlenecks.

Public transport services have also started to feel the pressure, with the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway suggesting alternatives for students affected by the traffic situation. Despite these inconveniences, the influx of tourists shows no signs of abating.

Mussoorie’s Accessibility Issues

Mussoorie’s appeal largely stems from its proximity to the Delhi-NCR region, making it a popular choice for quick getaways. However, the convenience has led to a significant increase in the number of vehicles, particularly during weekends and holidays. Reports suggest that as many as 6,000 to 7,000 tourist vehicles can enter Mussoorie on peak days, overwhelming both the roads and parking facilities.

The extended travel times have become a common frustration for visitors, with journeys from Dehradun lengthening considerably. Users on social media have voiced their concerns, indicating that attempts to explore the area often result in lengthy waits in traffic.

While Mussoorie retains its charm, the experience of tranquility greatly depends on the timing of one’s visit, making it less predictable than in previous years.

Nainital’s Traffic Management Crisis

Nainital presents its own set of challenges, primarily due to its geographical layout. The roads converge around the lake, making it prone to congestion during the tourist season. With the influx of visitors, traffic management has become a pressing issue for local authorities, prompting discussions about sustainable solutions.

Reports indicate that thousands of vehicles attempt to enter the town during peak periods, despite the limited parking and road capacity. The situation has led to complaints from residents regarding pollution and traffic jams that dampen the overall visitor experience.

Given the struggles faced during the summer rush, many now consider re-evaluating their travel plans to ensure a more pleasant experience amidst the natural beauty of these hill stations.
