Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally in Kolkata on June 20, marking his first public appearance in West Bengal following the BJP’s recent electoral victory. He emphasised the new sense of hope enveloping Bengal, suggesting that the state has emerged from a prolonged period of stagnation under the previous government. The PM spoke during the ‘Paschimbanga Divas’ celebrations in Tarakeswar, which is renowned for the ancient Taraknath Temple, drawing a large crowd of devotees.

The day commemorates West Bengal’s official foundation, recalling the historical meeting of the Bengal Legislative Assembly on June 20, 1947, which voted for the partition of Bengal. This event eventually led to the formation of West Bengal and the subsequent independence of Bangladesh in 1971.

During his speech, PM Modi highlighted the cultural legacy and historical significance of the occasion, linking it to the aspiration for a prosperous future for West Bengal. He expressed his gratitude for being present on this important day and remarked on the excitement evident among the people.

Impact of BJP’s Victory Acknowledged

The Prime Minister celebrated the BJP’s significant electoral achievement, securing 207 out of 294 Assembly seats while defeating the Trinamool Congress, which won 80. He noted that this victory represented a critical turning point for the BJP, previously a minor contender in West Bengal, dominated by other political entities for many years.

Modi stated that the recent elections had ushered in a wave of change, urging the citizens to recognise the power of their votes in shaping the future. He indicated that the transformation witnessed in Bengal serves as a clear example of how political changes can lead to substantial improvements in governance and development.

He extended his congratulatory messages to the people of Bengal on this day, emphasising its unique significance this year due to the realisation of long-held dreams for a flourishing future following independence. Modi expressed hope that the spirit of this historic occasion would inspire ongoing development and rewrite Bengal’s narrative.

Reflection on Bengal’s Historical Struggles

PM Modi recalled Bengal’s historical context, acknowledging the sacrifices and tumult the region has experienced, particularly during the pre-independence period. He referenced the violence of 1946 in Kolkata, a catastrophic event linked to the demand for a separate Pakistan, which cost many innocent lives.

Reflecting on this tragic chapter, he underscored that despite the brutalities faced, Bengal’s identity and pride remained intact. Modi stated that the resilience shown by the people prevented the erasure of their self-respect and cultural legacy.

On this West Bengal Day, he called for remembrance not only of the date but also of the broader historical narrative that shaped the state. In conjunction with his address, Modi announced the 23rd installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) programme and launched the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) in West Bengal. Additionally, he laid the groundwork for various development projects aimed at uplifting the state’s infrastructure.

The IndiGo flight bound for Agartala was reportedly struck by lightning while on the ground at Kolkata airport on June 19, 2026. This incident occurred amidst thunderstorms that were affecting the region, as indicated by alerts from the Airport Operations Control Centre. An official from the Airports Authority of India confirmed that the lightning strike took place at approximately 9.30 am.

At the time of the incident, the aircraft, identified as IndiGo flight 6E6068 (registration VT-IPW), was stationed at aerobridge 56L. The impact reportedly caused a sudden power shutdown in the aircraft’s systems, but fortunately, no injuries were reported among the 141 passengers and six crew members on board.

The adverse weather conditions, characterised by heavy rain and thunderstorms, had led to the grounding of numerous flights at the airport and caused operational challenges throughout the area. The ongoing weather events prompted authorities to issue advisories to ensure passenger safety.

Passenger and Crew Safety Measures

In response to the incident, IndiGo Airlines took immediate action to ensure the safety of its passengers. Following the lightning strike, the airline initiated a deboarding procedure for the flight’s occupants as a precautionary measure. Subsequently, passengers were transported to another aircraft, a larger A321 model (VT-ICD), to continue their journey.

The original departure time for flight 6E6068 was set for 9.20 am; however, due to the incident, the flight finally departed at 12.50 pm. This delay was essential to ensure that all safety checks were completed before the passengers resumed their travel.

According to the airline, two ground staff members present at the scene were reportedly affected by the incident and were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. Fortunately, they were released shortly after receiving a medical check-up, suggesting no serious injuries were sustained.

Weather Impact on Kolkata Region

The thunderstorms that resulted in the incident also had a broader impact on Kolkata and its surrounding districts. Residents have been facing issues such as waterlogging in several areas, leading to traffic disruptions and delays across the city. The adverse weather has created significant challenges for the local population and has affected daily operations in various sectors.

Authorities continue to monitor the weather conditions closely, as forecasts suggest the possibility of further thunderstorms in the days ahead. Local government agencies are working diligently to manage the situation and provide assistance where necessary, especially for those affected by flooding and traffic disruptions.

The incident involving the IndiGo aircraft serves as a reminder of the potential hazards posed by severe weather during air travel, and it highlights the importance of robust safety protocols within aviation operations. Ongoing assessments and safety measures will continue to ensure the well-being of passengers and crew members in similar situations in the future.

Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), expressed grave concerns regarding security measures in West Bengal following an incident at Kolkata Airport. The event transpired on the night of June 19, shortly after Banerjee arrived from Delhi. He reported that individuals allegedly armed were apprehended on the airport premises, prompting him to question the effectiveness of security in the area.

In a statement posted on X, Banerjee described the situation as shocking, raising critical issues about the lengths individuals may go to in creating fear and uncertainty. He pointed out that the implications for security in the state should not be overlooked. Banerjee’s comments have generated attention, especially concerning the response and coverage of the incident in the media.

Political Context and Allegations

On the day of the incident, Banerjee had travelled to Delhi for discussions with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla regarding the merger of dissenting TMC Members of Parliament with the National Citizens’ Party of India (NCPI). His return to Kolkata was marked by heightened tensions influenced by recent political developments.

Alongside Banerjee, TMC MP Derek O’Brien also raised concerns about the situation at the airport, suggesting that a supporter of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was present with a firearm. He noted this occurred just as they were exiting the airport. O’Brien shared a video documenting the individual being taken away, asserting that this could potentially be viewed as an attempted murder of Banerjee.

O’Brien’s comments, made in a post on X, highlighted the serious nature of the situation, labelling it “chilling.” He emphasised the need for accountability from the Bengal police regarding their apparent failure to prevent such incidents. He publicly questioned how a firearm could make its way to the airport exit just moments before their departure.

Response from TMC and Authorities

In the aftermath of the incident, TMC leaders asserted that this occurrence exemplifies a “state-sponsored attempt to eliminate a political opponent.” Their claims indicate a growing concern over the law and order situation under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s leadership. The party is vocal about its belief that political dialogue is being undermined by acts of intimidation.

The situation was further complicated by the presence of TMC women supporters, who reportedly played a role in detaining the alleged armed individual. This has drawn mixed reactions, questioning the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and security in public places.

Both Banerjee and O’Brien’s remarks have resonated in the political landscape of West Bengal, illustrating the ongoing tensions between the TMC and BJP. As the situation continues to develop, questions remain about the broader implications for political discourse and public safety in the state.

Kolkata Metro Railway will commence operations from 4 am on Sunday, June 21, nearly five hours earlier than its usual schedule, to facilitate travel for people attending the International Day of Yoga celebrations at Red Road.

In view of the anticipated rush for the Yoga Day event and the movement of NEET-UG aspirants and their guardians, Metro Railway has also scheduled additional services on three corridors. Officials said the timing of the last trains from terminal stations will remain unchanged.

Additional Services on Blue Line

Metro Railway will operate 214 services on the Blue Line connecting Dakshineswar and Shahid Khudiram, significantly higher than the usual 152 services on Sundays.

Of the total services, 107 trains will run in each direction.

Between 4 am and 8 am, trains on the corridor will operate at intervals of 14 to 15 minutes.

Green and Yellow Lines to See Increased Frequency

On the Green Line between Howrah Maidan and Salt Lake Sector V, Metro Railway will run 173 services, comprising 87 UP and 86 DN trains.

The corridor generally operates 108 services on Sundays. During the early morning period between 4 am and 9 am, trains will run every 10 to 15 minutes.

On the Yellow Line connecting Noapara and Jai Hind Bimanbandar, 112 services have been scheduled, with 56 trains operating in each direction.

This is higher than the usual 78 services available on Sundays.

Trains on the Yellow Line will run at intervals of 18 to 20 minutes between 4.18 am and 9 am.

Normal Sunday Schedule to Resume Later in the Day

After the morning peak hours, Metro Railway will revert to its regular Sunday timetable on all three corridors.

Officials also clarified that no services will be available on the Purple Line and the Orange Line on Sunday.

The special arrangements have been made to accommodate the expected surge in passenger traffic due to International Day of Yoga events and the transportation needs of NEET-UG candidates and their accompanying family members.

Heavy rainfall impacted Kolkata and several nearby districts in south Bengal on the morning of June 19, 2026, leading to significant waterlogging and traffic congestion. The incessant downpour inundated various roads in central and northern Kolkata, Salt Lake, and Sector V, causing delays during peak office hours and leaving many commuters stranded. Officials from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) reported multiple instances of waterlogging, though they indicated that the situation was not deemed severe.

To address the water accumulation, civic authorities activated pumping stations and drainage systems while deploying personnel to monitor the most affected areas. An official from KMC stated, “Water is expected to recede once the rain stops. Pumping stations are functioning and civic teams are on alert.” This coordinated effort aimed to minimise the disruption caused by the heavy rains.

Residential areas were also impacted, with reports of water entering homes and schools in low-lying regions. In the neighbouring Howrah district, classes at a school in Bally were suspended due to rainwater flooding several classrooms. A teacher noted that preparations for the upcoming International Day of Yoga were hindered since students could not access waterlogged facilities.

Preparedness Ahead of Yoga Day Celebrations

As the International Day of Yoga approaches, scheduled for Sunday, officials increased their readiness in anticipation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kolkata’s Red Road. Civic authorities have established a dedicated control room and placed emergency response teams on standby, prepared for any further developments resulting from the adverse weather.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported significant rainfall figures, including 43.6 mm recorded at Alipore between 8:30 am and 11:30 am, while Dum Dum experienced 58 mm, and Salt Lake recorded 80 mm over the same duration. These measurements highlight the intensifying effects of the rain in the region.

Northern Bengal Under Monitoring for Flood Risks

In Northern Bengal, growing concerns emerged as persistent rainfall in the hills led to rising water levels in the Teesta River. The Irrigation Department issued a yellow alert for unprotected riverbank areas, particularly from Domohoni to the Bangladesh border. This raised alarm bells for residents living along the riverbanks as they were advised to remain cautious amid fears of potential flooding and erosion.

Heavy rainfall recorded in Sikkim, Bhutan, and the Darjeeling hills has contributed to the rising water levels in the Teesta and other rivers across the area. The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall across district areas, including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar, in the coming days. Isolated locations in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar may experience extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm, alongside possible thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.

Authorities are actively monitoring river conditions and have urged residents in low-lying and vulnerable areas to adhere to official advisories as the weather pattern is expected to persist throughout the weekend. The situation remains fluid, with emergency measures in place to safeguard the community and mitigate any potential disasters.

The West Bengal government on Thursday informed the Calcutta High Court that attendance for government employees on International Yoga Day is not mandatory, providing relief to employees who had challenged a prior directive requiring workplace presence on June 21.

Clarifying its position, the Additional Advocate General told the court that participation in Yoga Day programmes will be entirely voluntary. The statement was made during a hearing before Justice Amrita Sinha in response to a petition filed by the State Coordination Committee.

The case stems from a June 14 notification issued by the State Chief Secretary, directing employees of government, semi-government, and state-run institutions to report to duty on June 21, which coincides with International Yoga Day. The directive had drawn criticism, prompting the Coordination Committee to move the High Court against what it termed mandatory attendance on a holiday.

Arguments presented in court

During the proceedings, senior advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, appearing for the petitioners, argued that numerous commemorative days are observed throughout the year. He cited occasions such as World No Tobacco Day, Teachers’ Day, and World Health Day to support his contention.

In a lighter moment, Justice Amrita Sinha humorously interjected during the hearing, asking, “You mentioned so many days, but did you forget to mention Valentine’s Day?” The remark drew laughter in the courtroom.

The matter has been listed for further hearing on Friday. The Additional Advocate General is expected to seek detailed instructions from the state government regarding the June 14 notification issued by Nabanna, the state secretariat.

The court is likely to examine whether any modification or clarification of the original directive is required in light of the state’s submission.

In a fresh wave of legal trouble for former West Bengal Minister Arup Biswas, Lionel Messi’s management team has officially registered a complaint with the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate. The letter, sent by the football icon’s representatives, accuses the former Sports Minister of violating strict security protocols and inappropriately touching the player during a past event in Kolkata.

Key Accusations Detailed in the Letter

According to sources, the complaint highlights significant lapses in crowd control and VIP decorum during Messi’s high-profile visit to the city.

Breach of Personal Space : The letter emphasizes that world-class athletes like Lionel Messi follow rigid security protocols which dictate that while he can be observed by fans and officials, physical contact is strictly restricted. The management alleged that the then-Sports Minister, Arup Biswas, disregarded these rules by crowding the footballer, placing his hands on Messi’s shoulders and waist to pose for photographs.

Security Failure: The management team further noted that a large number of unauthorized individuals managed to breach the security perimeter and enter the pitch.

Forced Exit: Due to the chaotic environment and the resulting threat to his safety, the Argentinian superstar was forced to cut his appearance short and hastily leave the stadium.

This development comes at a time when the Calcutta High Court has already been questioning Biswas’s whereabouts and his failure to appear before law enforcement in ongoing investigations. The public outrage has also been reignited by viral images from the event, which show the former minister aggressively crowding the footballer, much to the dismay of fans who complained that local politicians blocked their view of the global icon.

Backgrounder: The Messi-Arup Biswas Controversy Explained

To fully understand why a letter from Lionel Messi’s team has suddenly landed at the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate, it is essential to look at the political and cultural context of football in West Bengal, alongside the specific incident in question.

1. Kolkata’s Football Fanaticism and the Event

Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is widely regarded as the football capital of India, with a deeply passionate fanbase that idolizes South American football, particularly Argentina and Lionel Messi. Whenever global football stars visit the city, it becomes a massive public spectacle. However, these events are frequently criticized for being heavily hijacked by local politicians and bureaucrats seeking photo opportunities, often at the expense of ordinary sports fans and strict international security standards.

2. Who is Arup Biswas?

Arup Biswas is a prominent politician in West Bengal and a former minister in the Mamata Banerjee-led government. During the event in question, he served as the state’s Sports Minister. Biswas is currently under intense legal scrutiny regarding other unrelated matters, with the Calcutta High Court recently questioning why he has been evading police summons. The new complaint from Messi’s team adds severe international and legal embarrassment to his existing political troubles.

3. The Core of the Grievance: “Look but Don’t Touch”

International superstars of Messi’s stature travel with highly specific security blueprints managed by their PR and security agencies. These protocols are designed to protect athletes from overzealous fans and overreaching officials alike.

The Incident: During the Kolkata event, images went viral showing Arup Biswas and his associates completely surrounding Messi. Biswas was seen holding Messi by the waist and shoulder for photos.

The Fallout: The football star visibly appeared uncomfortable with the lack of personal space. Furthermore, local fans expressed immense anger because the VVIP contingent blocked the stadium’s view, preventing paying spectators from catching a glimpse of the player.

4. Why is the Letter Significant Now?

The timing of the letter—coinciding with major developments in Bengal’s political landscape—elevates a localized sports mismanagement issue into a formal police complaint regarding security breaches. By officially documenting that Messi was “virtually harassed” on the field and forced to flee the venue due to a compromised security perimeter, Messi’s management has turned a public relations disaster for West Bengal sports administration into a formal police inquiry.

Former North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha was arrested from his residence in the Phulbagan area of Kolkata on Wednesday by the Cooch Behar district police in connection with an old case. Following his arrest, he was taken to the Phulbagan Police Station, where initial legal formalities were completed.

Police sources indicated that Guha may be taken to North Bengal after the completion of procedural requirements. The arrest is linked to an ongoing investigation into multiple allegations, including incidents of post-poll violence in Cooch Behar district following the 2021 Assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Investigators are examining whether Guha had any direct or indirect involvement in these incidents.

Fourth minister arrested

With this development, the number of ministers from the previous TMC-led government arrested so far has risen to four. Earlier, Sujit Bose was arrested by a central agency, while Dilip Mondal and Ujjal Biswas were taken into custody by the state police.

A prominent political figure from the Dinhata constituency in Cooch Behar, Guha had served as the Minister for North Bengal Development. After losing to a BJP candidate in the Assembly elections, he relocated to Kolkata, where he has reportedly been residing since.

Sources further revealed that, apart from the post-poll violence cases, investigations into several corruption-related allegations against Guha are also underway. However, officials have not confirmed whether these probes are directly linked to his current arrest.

Guha questions legality

Following his detention, Guha questioned the legality of the police action, claiming that he had already secured anticipatory bail in the case. He alleged that the arrest was unlawful and said he would challenge the matter legally.

The Cooch Behar district police have refrained from making detailed comments, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. Officials, however, stated that the arrest was carried out based on available evidence and case records.

On the morning of June 13, a significant police operation unfolded at the residence of Abhishek Banerjee, a prominent leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The raid reportedly lasted for ninety minutes and did not result in any seizures or arrests, drawing immediate attention from political observers and members of the public.

According to reports, the police action was carried out in the pre-dawn hours, which has raised questions regarding its timing and motivations. Sources close to the TMC allege that this raid was politically motivated rather than a genuine law enforcement action.

The police have yet to provide detailed explanations regarding the purpose of the operation. This lack of clarity has led to speculation about the underlying reasons for the raid and the overall intention behind such a high-profile action.

TMC’s Response to the Raid

The TMC leadership has vocally condemned the raid, labelling it as a blatant act of political vendetta by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Party officials emphasised that the operation lacked any substantive justification, stating, “There was a complete absence of any seizures, and it was evident that this was an orchestrated attempt to intimidate.” The TMC has further described the raid as an alarming example of political manipulation in law enforcement.

Another TMC spokesperson added that the move signifies a desperate attempt by the BJP to undermine the TMC’s standing in the state of West Bengal. The accusation of vendetta has been a recurring theme in TMC’s rhetoric against BJP, especially as the latter seeks to expand its influence in the region.

This incident also fits within a broader narrative of political tensions between the TMC and BJP, with both parties frequently accusing each other of utilising state machinery to achieve political ends. The criticism from the TMC suggests that the party perceives an ongoing threat to its leadership and operatives from BJP’s activities.

Political Ramifications

The pre-dawn raid has sparked a mixed response among various political factions in West Bengal. Political analysts believe that such actions may intensify the rivalry between the TMC and BJP, as both parties gear up for future electoral contests. The BJP’s strategy in West Bengal has included increasing scrutiny of TMC leaders, which some see as an attempt to diminish the party’s authority.

Moreover, public sentiment regarding the raid could influence voter behaviour in upcoming elections. The implications of such politically charged events often lead to shifts in party loyalties, particularly in a region where party allegiance is susceptible to change. The TMC’s handling of this incident could be pivotal as it seeks to maintain its support base.

As the situation develops, further responses are expected from both parties. The BJP has not yet issued an official statement regarding the TMC’s allegations but may respond in due course to address the claims of partisanship and political targeting. This unfolding scenario highlights the ongoing complexities within West Bengal’s political landscape.

A team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) conducted a search at the residence of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee in Kalighat, Kolkata, on June 13. The operation reportedly commenced early in the morning, with police arriving at approximately 3 am. Subsequent to their arrival, a Disaster Management team was summoned at 5 am to assist in breaking open locks, and by 6:30 am, the search began in earnest, reportedly lasting around 90 minutes.

During this extensive operation, CID officials reportedly searched from the second floor to the terrace. Despite the thoroughness of the search, the official seizure report concluded that there were no findings, asserting that there was ‘NIL’ evidence encountered during the course of action.

The TMC has vigorously condemned the police’s actions, labelling the operation as an instance of political vendetta. Party members have described the search as intimidation aimed at undermining opposition leaders.

TMC’s Response to the Incident

The Trinamool Congress has openly denounced the police search, asserting that it reflects a deteriorating situation regarding political vendetta. Sagarika Ghose, a Rajya Sabha MP, emphasized the lack of evidence following the operation, denouncing it as an intimidation tactic against Banerjee. According to Ghose, the operation represents a distressing approach to dealing with political dissent.

TMC MP Kirti Azad also expressed criticism online, reiterating the loss of dignity in the actions taken against Banerjee. He stated that the outcomes of the searches reaffirmed their claims of no wrongdoing, which they attribute to a targeted effort against opposition leaders who refuse to yield to pressure from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Furthering the party’s narrative, TMC members have invoked phrases indicating ‘Operation Lotus,’ suggesting that the BJP is attempting to destabilise political opposition through malicious means.

Background to the Investigation

The CID’s presence at Abhishek Banerjee’s residence is part of an ongoing investigation into a signature forgery case. Prior to the search operation, Banerjee had been summoned and questioned for approximately five and a half hours at Bhabani Bhawan, the CID’s headquarters in the Alipore area of Kolkata.

Compounding the situation, the Kolkata Police has reportedly registered an FIR against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The FIR was lodged at the Hare Street police station on June 7, citing alleged violations of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) regarding provoking public unrest. The complaint, made by Tushar Kanti Das, claims that Mamata Banerjee delivered a misleading statement on March 9, which is believed to have jeopardised community harmony and threatened the state’s democratic structure.

The unfolding circumstances surrounding the TMC leaders have raised concerns within the party, indicating a potential escalation in political tensions as investigations continue. The party’s leadership continues to rally support and denounce what they perceive as targeted actions against them.
