High tension gripped the Jadavpur University campus after violent clashes broke out between opposing student factions during the late hours of Wednesday night. In response to the escalating situation, heavy police forces were stationed around the campus gates on Thursday morning to prevent further unrest. Multiple students sustained injuries during the altercations, prompting opposing political wings to announce protest demonstrations outside the university premises.

Dispute Over Union Meeting Escalates into Clashes

The unrest reportedly began during a General Body meeting organized by the engineering department. Arguments broke out between members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF), which controls the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students’ Union (FETSU). The confrontation rapidly spiraled out of control as members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) became involved. Allegations emerged that ABVP leader Nikhil Das was among those assaulted during the chaos.

Political Leaders Intervene Amid Safety Concerns

Local BJP MLA Sharvari Mukherjee visited KPC Medical College to check on the injured students. Following reports that external groups had breached the university grounds, left-leaning student activists locked themselves inside Arvind Bhavan, the main administrative building, to secure the premises. Mukherjee demanded that the accused SFI members surrender to the police. In response, SFI General Secretary Srijan Bhattacharya rejected claims of initial involvement, accused political opponents of orchestrating vandalism, and challenged authorities to hold official student union elections.

Protest Rallies Announced Outside University Campus

To express their opposition, both SFI and ABVP called for protest rallies outside the Jadavpur University campus. The ABVP scheduled its demonstration march from Golpark, while the SFI planned its protest starting from the nearby 8B Bus Stand.

A devastating fire tore through the Shika Inn hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in central Kolkata early Wednesday, August 19, 2026, claiming the lives of nine people. The incident, occurring in the bustling New Market area, has ignited widespread outrage over fire safety compliance in the city’s hospitality sector, coming just 48 hours after a similar tragedy in Tarapith.

Police and Emergency Response

According to official reports from the New Market Police Station, the emergency sequence began at approximately 02:00 hours, when authorities were alerted to a serious blaze at the hotel located at 15, Mirza Ghalib Street.

Initial Action: A police team from New Market PS arrived at the site immediately, coordinating with the Fire Brigade and CESC (electricity supply) authorities to cut power and begin containment.

Rescue Operation: Four fire tenders from the Fire Brigade Headquarters and the Free School Street Fire Station were deployed. Over two and a half hours of “prolonged and strenuous” operations, personnel successfully evacuated approximately 60 trapped guests.

Casualties: During the search, responders discovered nine individuals—including two women and one child—unconscious. They were rushed to the Medical College & Hospital, where attending physicians declared them *brought dead* upon arrival.

Containment: The fire was brought under full control by 04:30 hours. The area remains heavily cordoned off as forensic experts secure the site for investigation.

Ministerial Scrutiny and Calls for Accountability

West Bengal Minister Agnimitra Paul arrived at the scene on Wednesday morning to assess the disaster. Visibly distressed by the recurring nature of these incidents, she leveled sharp criticism at municipal oversight.

“How are these hotels operating in such congested areas without basic safety audits? No fire audits have been conducted for these establishments in the last 15 years,” Minister Paul stated. She announced that the state would immediately initiate a “zero-tolerance” drive, forming a specialized task force to conduct city-wide inspections of all hotels to verify valid trade and fire safety licenses.

Joining her, Industries Minister Tapas Roy and Fire Minister Kaushik Chowdhury emphasized that the government is treating the case with the utmost urgency, with a Special Investigation Team (SIT) now tasked with determining the exact origin of the blaze—preliminarily suspected to be a short circuit in an air-conditioning unit.

Investigation Status

While the hotel owner is currently reported as absconding, police have detained several staff members for interrogation. The scene remains under police guard to preserve evidence as the SIT begins its inquiry into potential criminal negligence.

This tragedy marks the second major hotel fire in West Bengal this week, following an incident in Tarapith that also resulted in nine fatalities, intensifying pressure on the administration to overhaul fire safety regulations for commercial buildings statewide.

A devastating fire broke out at a hotel near the Tarapith police station early Monday morning, killing at least six people and leaving several others critically injured. The disaster struck during the final Monday of the auspicious Hindu month of Shravan, when the property was packed with pilgrims and tourists visiting the holy town. The casualties include both tourists and hotel staff. Officials confirmed that victims succumbed to severe burn injuries and smoke inhalation.

At least 10 to 15 individuals rescued from the blazing structure have been rushed to Rampurhat Medical College and Hospital, where several remain in critical condition. Authorities fear the death toll may rise further.

Chain of Events

Origin of the Blaze: The fire reportedly originated around dawn at an electrical circuit breaker (MCB) located on the hotel’s ground floor.

Rapid Spread: Hotel employees noticed the flames and raised an alarm, but the fire quickly engulfed the building. The presence of flammable synthetic and fiber materials accelerated the flames across multiple floors.

Immediate Response: Owing to the hotel’s close proximity to the local police station, emergency services—including firefighters and police personnel—arrived promptly to commence rescue operations and extinguish the flames.

Harrowing Eyewitness Accounts

A surviving tourist staying on the ground floor recounted the panic that ensued around 4:00 AM: “We heard loud noises outside our room and opened the door, only to see flames rushing in. We quickly shut it back. Our room had no windows, so my family and I retreated to the bathroom, trying to escape through a small high vent. We were trapped for nearly 45 minutes until the police broke down the door to rescue us, said the survivor.

Investigation and Legal Action

Police have detained the hotel owner as part of the ongoing probe. Fire department officials suspect a short circuit caused the incident, but a comprehensive inquiry is underway to assess structural compliance and potential safety lapses. Fire Services Minister of State Kausik Choudhury expressed deep condolences, confirming that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found guilty of negligence or violating mandatory fire safety protocols.

A 30-year-old nurse was discovered deceased in a washroom at the state-run NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata shortly after starting her night shift, according to police reports. She began her duty at the hospital’s high-dependency unit at approximately 8 pm on Wednesday. At around 10.30 pm, she entered the staff washroom located in the antenatal ward of the Gynaecology Department building.

Concerns arose when her colleagues noticed she had not returned after a significant interval. Upon checking on her, they found the washroom door locked and, after repeated attempts to elicit a response, broke the door open. Inside, they discovered her unconscious on the floor. Despite a doctor’s intervention, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation Underway

Authorities from the Entally police station, alongside members of the Detective Department’s Homicide team, arrived at the hospital following the report of the incident. A preliminary investigation revealed no apparent injuries on the body, and no suicide note was located at the scene. Several medicine vials were found near the deceased, prompting investigators to ascertain if she had taken them into the washroom while on duty.

Detectives suspect a potential overdose of an anaesthetic drug administered through injection might be a contributing factor in her death. However, police are exploring all possible scenarios to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding her passing. Furthermore, her colleagues and family members have been interviewed to understand her recent behaviour and emotional state.

The police are reviewing the sequence of events from the time she reported for work on Wednesday night until her entry into the washroom. Investigators are also examining the relationship between her movements and the medicine vials found in proximity to her body. The nurse had reportedly been married for around one year.

Health Minister’s Response

The Minister stated that the exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem report is released. Following her husband’s request to conduct the postmortem at a different facility, authorities agreed to transfer the body to Kolkata Medical College, where the examination will be conducted under the oversight of the forensic medicine department head.

In response to the incident, the health department has established an internal committee composed of eight members to conduct an inquiry into the circumstances of the nurse’s death. This committee, led by the chief of the forensic medicine department, includes several senior hospital officials and began its investigation on Friday. The committee has been tasked with submitting its findings to the state health education department within a week.

Continuing Investigations by Authorities

Minister Mukherjee emphasised the importance of awaiting scientific findings rather than speculation regarding the case. He expressed condolences, noting that the health department resembles a family, and the tragic event is deeply saddening for all involved. Investigations both by the police and the health department’s internal committee continue to unfold.

A tragic incident occurred in Kolkata on Wednesday morning, resulting in the death of a woman named Sumitra Das. While driving, she lost control of the vehicle, which subsequently rolled into a nearby pond located within the Prafulla Kanan Utsav Garden. The depth of the pond was estimated to be between 10 to 12 feet, causing the car to become completely submerged upon entry.

Eyewitness accounts describe chaotic moments as numerous local residents rushed to the scene to assist. Upon witnessing the car enter the water, several onlookers immediately entered the pond in a bid to rescue Das. Despite their rapid response, their attempts were unsuccessful, prompting them to alert the police and fire department shortly thereafter.

Emergency responders arrived promptly at the site to conduct a search and rescue operation. Their efforts included utilising a crane to extract the vehicle from the pond. Unfortunately, after nearly an hour of searching, rescuers discovered that Das had already drowned while still trapped inside the car.

Victim’s Background

Sumitra Das was a resident of Keshtapur and had previously taken her daughter to school earlier that same day using a scooter. After dropping her off, Das parked the scooter and reportedly began practising her driving skills in the car, similar to routine sessions conducted on other days. Witnesses noted that she often had a driver accompany her during these practice drives but was alone at the time of the incident.

The events leading up to the tragedy have raised questions among local residents. Some noted that the presence of a more experienced driver in previous practice sessions may have contributed to her confidence while driving alone. There are concerns regarding the safety measures for novice drivers in such practice scenarios.

The unfortunate accident has left a profound impact on the local community, with many grappling with the loss of life. Friends and neighbours expressed sorrow over the incident and reflected on the dangers associated with new drivers. As investigations continue, the police have assured the community that they will review the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Emergency Response

Following the tragic event, authorities confirmed that emergency services arrived at the location shortly after the report was filed. The police and fire department personnel worked cohesively to retrieve the vehicle while prioritising the safety of the divers who entered the murky water. The effort to rescue Das was conducted under challenging conditions as the visibility in the pond was reportedly quite poor.

After successfully recovering the car from the pond, emergency responders found Das unconscious and immediately transported her to a nearby hospital. Medical staff attempted to revive her; however, she was declared deceased upon arrival. The cause of death was confirmed as drowning.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with driving practice, especially for individuals who may still be in the learning phase. The community continues to mourn the loss of Sumitra Das, with many calling for increased awareness and educational initiatives around driving safety to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

In a significant counter-espionage operation, the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) has apprehended an individual suspected of working for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).The accused, identified as Rana Rauf, is a resident of Faisalabad, Pakistan. Intelligence reports suggest that Rauf infiltrated India by crossing the porous Nepal border. Following his entry, he settled in the Topsia neighborhood of Kolkata, where he assumed the alias “Wahaf” to evade detection.

Investigators revealed that Rauf systematically built a false life in India by procuring forged identification documents, including a fraudulent , to validate his presence and secure a permanent local address. During the arrest, the STF recovered these fabricated records, which are now being analyzed as part of the ongoing probe into his potential espionage activities and local support network.

Recent Strategic Successes: West Bengal STF (May–August 2026)

Over the last three months, the West Bengal STF has intensified its crackdown on transnational criminal syndicates and terror-linked modules:

Dismantling a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) Cell (July 2026):

July 31: Security forces arrested Mohammad Hamim Mondal in Purba Bardhaman. Interrogations confirmed he was in direct communication with Pakistan-based handlers, receiving instructions to monitor sensitive security installations and high-profile targets.

July 31: A coordinated raid in Sahibganj, Jharkhand, led to the arrest of Arpita Sarkar, a key collaborator accused of gathering intelligence on political movement and regional security vulnerabilities.

August 3: The network’s reach was further curtailed with the arrest of Aditya Singh in Howrah. He was reportedly recruited through online gaming forums to facilitate local reconnaissance for the module.

Border Security & Fugitive Apprehension:

hroughout the recent quarter, the STF has collaborated with border agencies to intercept individuals attempting to bypass legal checkpoints. In March and subsequent operations near the Bongaon border, officials successfully captured multiple foreign nationals attempting to flee the country after engaging in illicit activities abroad.

A startling case of administrative negligence came to light at Kolkata’s Swasthya Bhawan on Thursday after West Bengal Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee conducted a surprise inspection and discovered thousands of unopened letters and official documents lying unattended for years.

During his visit to the receiving and dispatch section on the ground floor, the minister found piles of letters and applications stacked in corners and beside tables, many coated in dust. The correspondence ranged from public grievances to official communications from various government departments, with some dating back nearly a decade.

Sources indicated that the situation had persisted for years without any meaningful intervention. Mukherjee personally examined several bundles and came across important documents that had never been opened or reviewed, including a letter sent in 2018 by the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) of Berhampore.

Minister expresses strong displeasure

Expressing sharp dissatisfaction, Mukherjee said, “There are letters here dating back to 2016 and 2018. Important government correspondence has remained unopened. This is unacceptable.” He added that staff members had informed him about the presence of even older documents gathering dust in the section.

Demanding accountability, the minister summoned the officer in charge and questioned the gross mismanagement. He directed that all pending letters be opened immediately and processed without delay.

Reiterating directives issued by the Chief Minister, Mukherjee stressed that every incoming letter must be acknowledged and responded to promptly. “Those who sent these letters may have lost hope by now, but the administration will act seriously from this point onward,” he said.

Steps to clear backlog and improve efficiency

The minister also instructed officials to recruit additional personnel if staff shortages were contributing to the backlog. Following his directives, the department began sorting the accumulated letters with immediate effect, treating the task with urgency.

The incident has raised serious questions about administrative efficiency and accountability within the health department, highlighting systemic lapses in handling public grievances and official communication.

Amid a busy schedule of meetings at the PWD tent in Esplanade on Wednesday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari made an unexpected visit to two police stations in his Bhabanipur constituency, conducting surprise inspections at Watgunge and Iqbalpur police stations.

The unannounced visits, which took place on Wednesday afternoon, surprised police personnel as the stations had received no prior information about the Chief Minister’s arrival.

At around 1:15 pm, Adhikari reached Watgunge police station and immediately went to the Women’s Assistance Desk, where he interacted with the woman police officer on duty.

He enquired about the process of recording complaints and asked whether any grievances had been registered at the desk. He also interacted with other police personnel, listened to their concerns and discussed the challenges they face while carrying out their duties.

The Chief Minister later inspected the infrastructure of the police station, including fire safety arrangements. He checked the condition and expiry dates of fire extinguishers installed on the premises and also visited the lock-up area.
During his brief visit, Adhikari reviewed the overall functioning of the police station and held discussions with officers before leaving for the next stop.
From Watgunge, Adhikari’s convoy moved to Iqbalpur police station, where he conducted a similar inspection.

He first visited the women’s help desk and spoke with the officer posted there. He then reviewed other sections of the police station, including the lock-up area, and sought details about complaints registered during the previous 24 hours.
The Chief Minister also asked officers about the action taken on those complaints and reviewed the station’s overall functioning.

Focus on police infrastructure and women’s safety

Since taking charge of the Home portfolio, Adhikari has repeatedly stressed the need to strengthen police infrastructure and improve facilities for personnel. He has also emphasised a strict approach towards crimes against women, assuring that his government would follow a zero-tolerance policy on women’s safety.

The Chief Minister has previously visited police establishments, including Bhabani Bhaban and the Police Training School in Barrackpore, and has spoken about boosting police morale and providing necessary support for modernisation.

Political significance of the inspection

Political observers have described the surprise police station visits as a significant move. They have drawn comparisons with former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s practice of making unannounced visits to hospitals and police stations to assess ground-level conditions.

Sources said the choice of Watgunge and Iqbalpur police stations was significant as both are located in minority-dominated areas and have witnessed law-and-order challenges, including incidents of vandalism, in the past.
The inspections are being seen as a message on strengthening police preparedness and ensuring effective maintenance of law and order.
