A fresh wave of political speculation rippled through the legislative corridors of the West Bengal Assembly when a prominent ruling party legislator, Kunal Ghosh, was spotted wearing a saffron-colored scarf. The unexpected attire instantly caught the attention of media personnel and political observers alike, igniting intense discussions across the state regarding whether a potential shift in party allegiance might be on the horizon.

Context of the Assembly Grounds Event

The Unusual Attire: The Beleghata representative was seen navigating the assembly complex, engaging in casual conversations, and managing phone calls while wearing the distinct saffron garment.

Immediate Clarification

Offered: The rumors were swiftly addressed by opposing figures in the legislature. BJP legislator Sajal Ghosh clarified that members of a visiting cow protection organization had placed the scarf on him within the complex, completely dismissing any theories regarding a political switch.

Broader Political History and Public Appearances

This legislative episode follows a series of high-profile public engagements that have kept the MLA frequently featured in regional news headlines. Earlier during state-wide Independence Day commemorations at the Metropolitan Building, his participation in a parallel flag-hoisting event drew significant spotlight. During that public gathering, he delivered a strong speech addressing local civic concerns, honoring freedom fighters, and voicing sharp criticisms regarding historical figures and regional political figures.

Despite occasional instances of internal friction and outspoken public commentary concerning organizational matters, the legislator has long maintained a visible presence within the state’s political landscape. Political analysts note that while such incidents frequently trigger social media commentary and opposition speculation, routine visits from socio-cultural delegations to the assembly premises often result in unexpected photo-ops.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on the second day of his North Bengal tour, launched a direct attack on former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while praising Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari for what he described as the state government’s renewed focus on border security.

Addressing a special programme at the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Frontier Headquarters in Siliguri, Shah recalled that the state’s former chief minister had traditionally been invited to such events but, according to him, had never attended.

Shah specifically thanked Suvendu Adhikari for participating in the programme, using his presence to underline what he portrayed as a change in the state government’s approach towards border security.

Shah said the difference between the previous and present administrations was particularly visible in the process of acquiring land for border infrastructure.

He claimed that during the previous government, the Centre had to make repeated requests for land, whereas the present administration was approving such requirements even before receiving formal communications.

According to Shah, around 560 acres of land were required to strengthen security around the strategically important Siliguri Corridor. He alleged that the previous government had failed to provide the land for years, while Adhikari approved the proposal soon after assuming office.

“Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has prioritised border security from day one,” Shah said.

Shah highlights significance of ‘Vande Mataram’

The Home Minister also used the occasion to speak about India’s national heritage and the significance of Vande Mataram.

Shah said the national song had not been accorded its full due for a long period after Independence and Partition. He recalled that Vande Mataram had been sung in Parliament with members standing, but the complete song was not performed.

According to Shah, the omission had caused disappointment among many people, including himself.

He said the 80th Independence Day celebrations marked a significant change, claiming that the entire song was sung on that occasion. Shah said the move would help younger generations gain a clearer understanding of the nationalist vision and contribution of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, the author of Vande Mataram.

BNS exhibition to open in Siliguri

Following the programme at the SSB headquarters, Shah is scheduled to visit the Kawakhali grounds in Siliguri, where he will inaugurate an exhibition on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The exhibition will remain open until August 26 and will focus on creating public awareness about provisions of the BNS that replaced corresponding sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Shah to hold meetings with BJP leaders, hills representatives

After completing Friday’s engagements, Shah is scheduled to return to his hotel in the afternoon, where he will meet BJP leaders and workers.

On Saturday, he is expected to hold two successive meetings focused on issues concerning the Hills region. The meetings are expected to form part of his wider engagements during the North Bengal visit.

The Union Home Minister will return to Delhi after concluding his meetings in North Bengal.

A blast at an alleged illegal firecracker manufacturing unit in Champahati, located in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, resulted in the serious injuries of two individuals on August 20. Local sources report that the injured persons are identified as 52-year-old Padmarani Naskar and a man named Abbas Gazi. Both individuals were reportedly admitted to a nearby hospital in critical condition following the explosion.

Details of the Incident

Local residents have indicated that the unit was run by Bapi Naskar, who has faced allegations regarding the operation. Reports suggest that the firecracker manufacturing site was concealed under the pretense of a fish business and was located within a forested area, distanced from populated residential zones. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the explosion occurred inside the building, further raising concerns among locals.

In response to the incident, a significant police presence arrived at the scene. A team from the Baruipur Police District, led by Additional Superintendent of Police Atish Biswas, commenced an investigation shortly after receiving word of the blast. Authorities are currently examining the conditions that led to the explosion and looking into the allegations surrounding the unlawful firecracker operation.

The investigation aims to ascertain whether others were complicit in the alleged illegal manufacturing activities. As the situation unfolds, local authorities are under pressure to address the safety concerns raised by the nearby residents.

Local Reactions and Safety Concerns

The incident has evoked a strong reaction from the Champahati community, with many expressing alarm over the potential dangers posed by such illegal operations. Community members have voiced their worries about safety, particularly in light of the recent explosion and its devastating effects on the injured individuals.

Local residents, now living in heightened apprehension, have sought assurances from authorities regarding the enforcement of safety regulations and the eradication of similar illegal practices in the local area. Many have called for stricter monitoring of manufacturing units that may operate outside the law, particularly those related to explosives.

As the investigation continues, police efforts to gather information from the community may play a crucial role in understanding the wider implications of this incident. The authorities are expected to increase their engagement with residents to build trust and ensure a more secure environment.

Further Actions by Authorities

Following the event, law enforcement has indicated that they will take the necessary steps to not only investigate but also implement measures aimed at preventing future occurrences of similar incidents. This approach likely includes heightened scrutiny of businesses operating in the vicinity and coordinated efforts with local government to review licensing and operational protocols.

Authorities have been mindful of the larger implications an event like this could have on community safety and are committed to addressing both the immediate crisis and the underlying issues that allow for such illegal operations to exist undetected.

As they work to uncover the specifics of this case, the police’s actions will be observed closely by local residents eager for resolution and change. The ongoing investigation is likely to serve as a critical case study in addressing illegal manufacturing in the region.

High tension gripped the Jadavpur University campus after violent clashes broke out between opposing student factions during the late hours of Wednesday night. In response to the escalating situation, heavy police forces were stationed around the campus gates on Thursday morning to prevent further unrest. Multiple students sustained injuries during the altercations, prompting opposing political wings to announce protest demonstrations outside the university premises.

Dispute Over Union Meeting Escalates into Clashes

The unrest reportedly began during a General Body meeting organized by the engineering department. Arguments broke out between members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF), which controls the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students’ Union (FETSU). The confrontation rapidly spiraled out of control as members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) became involved. Allegations emerged that ABVP leader Nikhil Das was among those assaulted during the chaos.

Political Leaders Intervene Amid Safety Concerns

Local BJP MLA Sharvari Mukherjee visited KPC Medical College to check on the injured students. Following reports that external groups had breached the university grounds, left-leaning student activists locked themselves inside Arvind Bhavan, the main administrative building, to secure the premises. Mukherjee demanded that the accused SFI members surrender to the police. In response, SFI General Secretary Srijan Bhattacharya rejected claims of initial involvement, accused political opponents of orchestrating vandalism, and challenged authorities to hold official student union elections.

Protest Rallies Announced Outside University Campus

To express their opposition, both SFI and ABVP called for protest rallies outside the Jadavpur University campus. The ABVP scheduled its demonstration march from Golpark, while the SFI planned its protest starting from the nearby 8B Bus Stand.

A physical altercation occurred between opposing student factions at Jadavpur University, resulting in injuries to two members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The incident transpired during a General Body Meeting conducted by the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students’ Union (FETSU) on Wednesday evening, at approximately 9 pm in Arbindo Bhawan.

The meeting was related to the constitution of the FETSU Union and involved students from varied political backgrounds. Reports suggest that Left-aligned students sought to unilaterally establish the union, prompting opposition from ABVP members including President Nikhil Das and colleague Diptiman Kar.

In response to their objections, a scuffle reportedly broke out between the two groups within the university’s premises. Both injured ABVP representatives, Nikhil Das and Diptiman Kar, were taken to KPC Hospital in Jadavpur for medical care following the confrontation.

Police Intervention and Complaints Filed

In the aftermath of the incidents, MLA Sarbari Mukherjee arrived at Jadavpur Police Station around midnight, accompanied by supporters, to file a complaint regarding the altercation. Aritra Sarkar, a third-year Computer Science and Engineering student from Murshidabad, reported the incident formally, confirming that it had occurred on campus.

Police were alerted to disturbances within the university and the Officer-in-Charge of the Jadavpur Police Station attempted to reach university officials but was unsuccessful. Eventually, a complaint was registered through Dial 100, prompting the Pro-Vice-Chancellor to contact local police for assistance.

A police team subsequently entered the campus, where they discovered that outsiders had to be removed from the area. The officers also found that some posters and festoons outside Arbindo Bhawan had been vandalised, with reports of them being torn and burned.

Current Situation and Potential Agitations

The police noted approximately 50 to 60 individuals still present at Arbindo Bhawan, where the General Body Meeting was ongoing. Officers instructed them to vacate the area, but they allegedly did not comply. Following police intervention, the gathering was dispersed.

Security forces and police personnel remain deployed outside Jadavpur University to prevent additional disturbances and maintain order. A complaint filed by Aritra Sarkar cites 11 individuals and invokes several sections of the Indian Penal Code, as well as provisions from the SC/ST Act.

Currently, the situation both in and around Jadavpur University has reportedly stabilised. However, police have received intelligence regarding possible political demonstrations planned by student organisations linked to various political entities at the 8B Bus Stand and nearby areas. Continued police presence is intended to prevent further escalation and ensure public safety on campus.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Saugata Roy has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, lodging a formal complaint over a protest he faced at Kolkata Airport and seeking action against two BJP MLAs whom he has named in the incident. Roy has termed the episode a breach of privilege.

According to Roy, the protest took place on Tuesday afternoon when he arrived at the airport to attend an official meeting in his capacity as Chairman of the Kolkata Airport Advisory Committee. As his vehicle entered the airport premises, a group of individuals allegedly surrounded it, raising slogans such as “Go back” and “Thief, thief,” while waving black flags.

The situation reportedly escalated beyond sloganeering, with claims that protesters shoved his car and even struck it with a shoe. Security personnel later intervened and brought the situation under control.

Allegations against BJP MLAs

In his complaint to the Speaker, Roy named BJP MLAs Arijit Bakshi and Sourav Sikdar, alleging that the protest took place in their presence and with their support. He further claimed that the demonstrators were BJP supporters and accused the party of orchestrating the protest.

Expressing shock over the incident, Roy said he had not expected such hostility while attending an official meeting. He reiterated that the matter amounts to a breach of parliamentary privilege and demanded strict action against the two legislators mentioned in his complaint.

Background of political tensions

The protest comes amid a series of demonstrations targeting Trinamool Congress leaders and workers in different parts of West Bengal. Recent incidents have included slogan-shouting, black flag protests, and alleged instances of objects being hurled at political figures during public appearances.

A devastating fire tore through the Shika Inn hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in central Kolkata early Wednesday, August 19, 2026, claiming the lives of nine people. The incident, occurring in the bustling New Market area, has ignited widespread outrage over fire safety compliance in the city’s hospitality sector, coming just 48 hours after a similar tragedy in Tarapith.

Police and Emergency Response

According to official reports from the New Market Police Station, the emergency sequence began at approximately 02:00 hours, when authorities were alerted to a serious blaze at the hotel located at 15, Mirza Ghalib Street.

Initial Action: A police team from New Market PS arrived at the site immediately, coordinating with the Fire Brigade and CESC (electricity supply) authorities to cut power and begin containment.

Rescue Operation: Four fire tenders from the Fire Brigade Headquarters and the Free School Street Fire Station were deployed. Over two and a half hours of “prolonged and strenuous” operations, personnel successfully evacuated approximately 60 trapped guests.

Casualties: During the search, responders discovered nine individuals—including two women and one child—unconscious. They were rushed to the Medical College & Hospital, where attending physicians declared them *brought dead* upon arrival.

Containment: The fire was brought under full control by 04:30 hours. The area remains heavily cordoned off as forensic experts secure the site for investigation.

Ministerial Scrutiny and Calls for Accountability

West Bengal Minister Agnimitra Paul arrived at the scene on Wednesday morning to assess the disaster. Visibly distressed by the recurring nature of these incidents, she leveled sharp criticism at municipal oversight.

“How are these hotels operating in such congested areas without basic safety audits? No fire audits have been conducted for these establishments in the last 15 years,” Minister Paul stated. She announced that the state would immediately initiate a “zero-tolerance” drive, forming a specialized task force to conduct city-wide inspections of all hotels to verify valid trade and fire safety licenses.

Joining her, Industries Minister Tapas Roy and Fire Minister Kaushik Chowdhury emphasized that the government is treating the case with the utmost urgency, with a Special Investigation Team (SIT) now tasked with determining the exact origin of the blaze—preliminarily suspected to be a short circuit in an air-conditioning unit.

Investigation Status

While the hotel owner is currently reported as absconding, police have detained several staff members for interrogation. The scene remains under police guard to preserve evidence as the SIT begins its inquiry into potential criminal negligence.

This tragedy marks the second major hotel fire in West Bengal this week, following an incident in Tarapith that also resulted in nine fatalities, intensifying pressure on the administration to overhaul fire safety regulations for commercial buildings statewide.

In a major boost for the state’s forest personnel ahead of Durga Puja, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a substantial pay rise for departmental workers. Effective from October, nearly 500 Range Officers, Bit Officers, and Forest Guards will receive an additional ₹5,000 in their monthly salaries, while Forest Helpers (Bon Sahayaks) will see a ₹2,000 increase.

The announcement came during an event supporting the nationwide “Plant a Tree in Mother’s Name” (Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam) conservation initiative, where the Chief Minister called for a state-wide push toward environmental sustainability.

Key Highlights of the Event

Massive Reforestation Drive: The state government aims to plant 10 crore (100 million) saplings across West Bengal this year, with full maintenance guaranteed for two years. A dedicated plantation target of 100,000 trees has been set for Bhabanipur, supported significantly by the Panchayat and Rural Development Department.

Wildlife & Infrastructure Projects: Bengal plans to release tigers into the Buxa Tiger Reserve on October 2. Additionally, a modern aquarium project at Alipore was officially announced.

National Alignment: Referencing similar large-scale greening efforts across the country, the administration confirmed its commitment to ambitious ecological preservation goals in coordination with national frameworks.
