Addressing a special programme at the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Frontier Headquarters in Siliguri, Shah recalled that the state’s former chief minister had traditionally been invited to such events but, according to him, had never attended.

Shah specifically thanked Suvendu Adhikari for participating in the programme, using his presence to underline what he portrayed as a change in the state government’s approach towards border security.

Shah said the difference between the previous and present administrations was particularly visible in the process of acquiring land for border infrastructure.

He claimed that during the previous government, the Centre had to make repeated requests for land, whereas the present administration was approving such requirements even before receiving formal communications.

According to Shah, around 560 acres of land were required to strengthen security around the strategically important Siliguri Corridor. He alleged that the previous government had failed to provide the land for years, while Adhikari approved the proposal soon after assuming office.

“Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has prioritised border security from day one,” Shah said.

पश्चिम बंगाल बार काउंसिल में कुल 25 सीटें होती हैं, जिनमें से 23 सीटों पर मतदान के जरिए प्रतिनिधि चुने जाते हैं। शेष 2 सीटों पर सुप्रीम कोर्ट के दिशा-निर्देशों के अनुसार बार काउंसिल ऑफ इंडिया (BCI) द्वारा महिला उम्मीदवारों को मनोनीत किया जाएगा। इस चुनाव में कुल 75 उम्मीदवारों ने अपनी किस्मत आजमाई थी। राजनीतिक दलों से जुड़ी वकीलों की विंग ने इस चुनाव को प्रतिष्ठा का प्रश्न बना लिया था। TMC लॉयर्स सेल ने सभी 23 सीटों पर अपने अधिकृत उम्मीदवार उतारे थे। भाजपा (BJP) ने 22 सीटों पर अपने प्रत्याशी खड़े किए थे। वाम मोर्चे (Left Front) ने 12 सीटों पर दांव लगाया था। इसके साथ ही 18 निर्दलीय वकीलों ने भी मैदान में उतरकर मुकाबले को बहुकोणीय बना दिया था। जब नतीजों की घोषणा हुई, तो टीएमसी समर्थित पैनल ने एकतरफा क्लीन स्वीप करते हुए 15 सीटों पर परचम लहरा दिया। वहीं विधानसभा चुनाव जीतकर सरकार बनाने वाली भाजपा महज 3 सीटों पर सिमट कर रह गई, जो कि उसके पिछले प्रदर्शन के बराबर ही है (यानी सत्ता में आने के बाद भी वकीलों के बीच भाजपा का ग्राफ नहीं बढ़ा)। वाम मोर्चा भी पिछले चुनाव की 4 सीटों से घटकर 3 सीटों पर आ गया, जबकि कांग्रेस अपनी पुरानी 2 सीटों को बचाने में कामयाब रही।

महिला आरक्षित सीटों पर भी ‘दीदी’ का जादू कायम

सुप्रीम कोर्ट के नए नियमों के तहत इस बार बार काउंसिल चुनाव में एक बड़ा बदलाव किया गया था। कुल 23 निर्वाचित सीटों में से 5 सीटें महिला अधिवक्ताओं के लिए आरक्षित की गई थीं। इन 5 सीटों पर ममता बनर्जी ने खुद व्यक्तिगत रुचि लेकर अपनी पसंद के मजबूत महिला उम्मीदवारों को टिकट दिया था। नतीजे आने पर ममता बनर्जी की रणनीति पूरी तरह सफल साबित हुई। इन 5 आरक्षित सीटों में से 4 सीटों पर TMC समर्थित महिला उम्मीदवारों ने शानदार जीत दर्ज की, जबकि बची हुई 1 सीट कांग्रेस के खाते में गई। भाजपा और वाम मोर्चा महिला आरक्षित वर्ग में अपना खाता खोलने में भी नाकाम रहे।

TMC लॉयर्स सेल से मिली जानकारी के मुताबिक, इस चुनाव में सबसे बड़ी और रिकॉर्ड तोड़ जीत शुभाशीष चक्रवर्ती ने दर्ज की है, जो सबसे अधिक मतों के अंतर से विजयी होकर उभरे हैं। उनके अलावा ममता बनर्जी की सिफारिश पर मैदान में उतरे कई अन्य दिग्गज वकीलों ने भी भारी मतों से जीत हासिल की है, जिनमें प्रमुख नाम शामिल हैं- बैसोनर चटर्जी, अंसार मंडल, अशोक देब, इंद्रनील बसु, सिद्धार्थ मुखर्जी। TMC लॉयर्स सेल के वरिष्ठ सदस्य संजय बर्धन ने नतीजों पर खुशी जताते हुए मीडिया को बताया, “यह चुनाव सीधे तौर पर राज्य की सभी जिला अदालतों और कलकत्ता हाईकोर्ट में प्रैक्टिस करने वाले असली वकीलों के मतदान द्वारा तय किया गया है। हमारे वकीलों ने लगातार कानूनी समुदाय के हितों की रक्षा की है और बुद्धिजीवियों ने भाजपा की विभाजनकारी राजनीति को पूरी तरह खारिज कर दिया है।”

“How are these hotels operating in such congested areas without basic safety audits? No fire audits have been conducted for these establishments in the last 15 years,” Minister Paul stated. She announced that the state would immediately initiate a “zero-tolerance” drive, forming a specialized task force to conduct city-wide inspections of all hotels to verify valid trade and fire safety licenses.

Joining her, Industries Minister Tapas Roy and Fire Minister Kaushik Chowdhury emphasized that the government is treating the case with the utmost urgency, with a Special Investigation Team (SIT) now tasked with determining the exact origin of the blaze—preliminarily suspected to be a short circuit in an air-conditioning unit.

Investigation Status

While the hotel owner is currently reported as absconding, police have detained several staff members for interrogation. The scene remains under police guard to preserve evidence as the SIT begins its inquiry into potential criminal negligence.

This tragedy marks the second major hotel fire in West Bengal this week, following an incident in Tarapith that also resulted in nine fatalities, intensifying pressure on the administration to overhaul fire safety regulations for commercial buildings statewide.
