The Telangana Police have reported that initial drug and alcohol tests conducted on the accused involved in the fatal road accident on August 16 have returned negative results. The accident resulted in the death of 26-year-old Bharati Mukhi, a saleswoman, after she was struck by a car allegedly driven by 21-year-old Lingameneni Sanjush. According to Ritiraj, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for the Balanagar Zone, the blood and urine samples from the accused were analysed at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).

Details of the Incident

On the afternoon of August 16, Bharati Mukhi and a colleague were reportedly on their way back from ITC Kohenur to collect meals when the incident occurred. As they crossed the road in front of Inorbit Mall in Madhapur, a car, allegedly driven at high speed in a reckless manner, struck Mukhi. Authorities stated that she sustained severe head injuries and was immediately transported to Apollo Hospital in Jubilee Hills, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The DCP noted that the police were informed of the incident by the hospital, prompting them to register a case. Following the accident, the accused was apprehended, and both drug and alcohol screenings were subsequently executed. The preliminary findings indicated no infringement of the law concerning substance use.

In light of the negative test results, the police can only invoke Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which is associated with offences carrying a maximum penalty of five years. Since the offence is classified under this category, the investigating officer has been tasked with evaluating the necessity of an arrest based on Section 35 of the BNSS, along with pertinent directives established by the Supreme Court in the Arnesh Kumar case.

Ongoing Investigation and Future Actions

According to DCP Ritiraj, as the situation currently stands, the conditions for arrest outlined in the Arnesh Kumar ruling do not apply. Consequently, a notice was issued to the accused, and no arrest is anticipated. Furthermore, the vehicle involved in the accident has been seized. The Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) completed a thorough inspection of the car, with a report expected in the coming three to four days.

Ritiraj emphasised that the investigation is proceeding in accordance with legal protocols. Despite the initial negative results from drug and alcohol screenings, the authorities are committed to a comprehensive inquiry. Blood samples have also been dispatched to the FSL for further analysis.

The DCP assured that if the FSL report uncovers any evidence necessitating adjustments to the current charges or alterations in the investigation, appropriate measures will follow. The police remain vigilant in ensuring that justice is served and that all aspects of the case are examined thoroughly.

The tragic stabbing of Roopa Reddy, the principal of Nagarjuna School in Telangana’s Nalgonda district, unfolded when two former students allegedly assaulted her at her residence. The police reported that the motive behind this heinous act was an attempt to steal money. Following the incident, the local police deployed five teams to delve into the investigation, thoroughly examining approximately 70 CCTV recordings from the surrounding area.

A significant breakthrough arose when investigators discovered that during her last conversation with her aunt, Roopa Reddy had referred to one of the assailants as “Babu”. This term was known to be used by her when addressing students, leading the police to examine potential suspects among the student populace.

In the immediate aftermath of the murder, the school was closed for four days. Upon reopening, law enforcement identified and interrogated 13 students who had been absent, including five individuals from Class 10, who became subjects of heightened scrutiny. Among them, two displayed extravagant spending patterns, which raised suspicions regarding their activities.

Discovery of Forensic Evidence

Further investigation revealed that one of the minors had previously resided in the school’s hostel and had a penchant for alcohol and motorcycles. At one point, Roopa Reddy had found cash and a mobile phone in the accused’s possession, which led her to reprimand him and demote him from his hostel status to that of a day scholar. This decision reportedly fostered resentment towards her.

In addition to this, investigators found that just a month prior to the incident, one of the accused had travelled to Goa, indicating potential premeditated intentions to engage in illegal activities. Days before the murder, he was seen scouting Roopa Reddy’s residence after ascertaining that substantial fee collections from her school were kept at her home.

Details of the Attack and Aftermath

The attack occurred on August 11 when Roopa Reddy returned home from work. Allegedly, the two minors climbed over the compound wall and entered her house while wearing masks. During the altercation, one of the assailants reportedly lost his mask, allowing Roopa Reddy to recognise him. Subsequently, the two suspects attacked her multiple times with a knife, inflicting 27 stab wounds before fleeing with her mobile phone and cash.

Following the incident, law enforcement successfully recovered Rs 1.54 lakh in cash, an iPhone, and Roopa Reddy’s phone from the suspects. Given their status as minors, authorities noted that they would be presented before the Juvenile Justice Court to face the consequences of their actions.

SP Sharath Chandra Pawar confirmed that the investigation had established a clear link between the accused and Roopa Reddy, noting that both individuals had once been students under her tutelage. The ongoing investigation aims to uncover further details related to the incident and ensure justice is served.

The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has issued a public advisory regarding a rising trend of cyber fraud in Telangana. This scam involves imposters posing as officials from the Election Commission, specifically targeting voters through counterfeit messages related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. The bureau aims to alert citizens to the tactics used by these fraudsters, who are reportedly attempting to exploit vulnerabilities in the electoral system to steal personal banking information.

Fraudulent messages are being disseminated via WhatsApp and other digital platforms, misleading recipients by asserting that their voter registration details are incorrect or that their SIR applications have been declined. These messages often include links that falsely promise assistance with updating or rectifying voter information.

Once an individual engages with these links, the fraudsters, masquerading as Election Commission representatives, prompt them to click on malicious links or join chat groups for verification purposes, significantly increasing the risk of data theft.

Scammers Demand Minimal Fees for Verification

According to the TGCSB, one common tactic employed by these scammers involves requesting a nominal fee, often as low as Rs 5, under the pretext of verifying or updating voter details. This method is designed to build trust with the potential victim. After establishing this trust, scammers will then attempt to extract sensitive financial data, such as internet banking credentials, debit and credit card information, PINs, passwords, and other confidential banking details.

The TGCSB has clearly stated that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process is entirely free of charge, emphasising that the Election Commission does not impose any fees for updating voter information or processing applications. This clarification aims to prevent citizens from falling prey to these deceptive schemes.

Members of the public are encouraged to refrain from responding to unsolicited calls or messages asking for payment related to SIR services. The bureau’s advisory serves as a crucial reminder for citizens to be aware of potential scams during this electoral process.

Public Urged to Stay Vigilant and Report Suspicious Activity

In addition to urging caution, the TGCSB has advised individuals to avoid clicking on suspicious links shared via messaging platforms or social media. It is crucial for citizens to verify any election-related communication through official channels of the Election Commission to ensure their safety and avoid being misled by scammers.

The cyber security authority also stresses the importance of never sharing confidential banking information, such as internet banking usernames and passwords, debit or credit card details, PINs, or One-Time Passwords (OTPs) with anyone claiming to represent the election office. These precautions will significantly reduce the chances of falling victim to fraud.

This advisory is particularly timely, coinciding with the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Authorities are acutely aware that fraudsters may capitalise on this period to target unsuspecting voters. The TGCSB has reiterated its call for citizens to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious messages, unsolicited calls, or dubious online links to the relevant authorities or the cybercrime helpline immediately.

Previous Traffic Incident Reported

On the same day, an earlier accident occurred in the Hydershakote area of Rangareddy district, where a 47-year-old retired Army jawan was killed. This incident involved an unidentified SUV allegedly crashing into three two-wheelers in the early hours of Monday. The accident took place around 5:30 am, under the jurisdiction of the Narsingi Police Station.

As per reports from the Narsingi police, the SUV struck the three two-wheelers before fleeing the scene. The retired Army jawan, identified as Ravinder, was riding his motorcycle when he became a victim of the collision. Two other individuals were also injured in this incident.

A police official detailed the events, stating, “Today in the early morning hours around 5:30 am, an SUV rammed into three two-wheelers near Hydershakote.

The indefinite strike planned by gig and platform workers in Telangana has been postponed by ten days. This decision follows discussions with the Telangana government, during which Labour Minister Gaddam Vivek Venkataswamy provided assurances to the workers’ unions. The postponement aims to give the government a window to address long-standing demands from the gig workforce, without signalling a retreat from their struggle.

The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) and the Telangana App-Based Drivers Forum (TADF) are behind the planned strike. They have made it clear that this delay should not be seen as a cancellation of their demands but rather an opportunity for actionable outcomes within the next ten days.

Meetings with Government Officials

Two significant meetings took place on August 8, focusing on the workers’ grievances. The first, a joint conciliation meeting, was led by Shyamsunder Reddy, Joint Commissioner of Labour for the Rangareddy Zone, and included stakeholders from TGPWU, TADF, various platform companies, and government representatives.

During this initial meeting, officials from the Transport Department requested further time to assess the implementation of the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025. Workers’ representatives strongly urged the department to enforce these guidelines effectively, advocating for protections against arbitrary fare adjustments and operational decisions made by platform companies.

In the second meeting, Labour Minister Gaddam Vivek Venkataswamy assured the union representatives that immediate steps would be taken to liaise with both the Labour and Transport Departments. He indicated that the unresolved issues would be presented to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy for prompt action.

Key Demands from Workers’ Unions

The unions have articulated specific demands, including the notification of the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025, and the establishment of fair base fares and per-kilometre rates for app-based cab and auto services. They also highlighted the need for strict enforcement of existing laws to prevent the commercial use of private vehicles for transport services without proper registration.

Additionally, there is a call for immediate legislative action on the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Rules, along with the formation of a welfare board dedicated to the interests of gig workers. These demands aim to achieve fair compensation, legal safeguards, transparency, and improve the dignity of work within this sector.

Notable figures attending these meetings included Additional Labour Commissioner E. Gangadhar and Additional Transport Commissioner C. Ramesh, along with various officials and trade union representatives. The union delegation comprised notable leaders, including TGPWU Founder President Shaik Salauddin and several other representatives from affiliated organisations.

Future Outlook for Gig and Platform Workers

Given the reassuring statements from government officials, the TGPWU, TADF, and supporting trade unions have opted to defer their indefinite strike for a period of ten days. They expressed hope that concrete actions will address the pending concerns during this time frame.

Nevertheless, the unions clarified that this postponement is not an end to their campaign. Should there be insufficient progress or fulfilment of the government’s promises within the ten-day period, a consultation among gig and platform workers throughout Telangana will determine the subsequent course of action.

Shaik Salauddin, the TGPWU Founder President, reiterated the organisation’s commitment to securing fair fare structures, proper implementation of regulatory guidelines, and the establishment of social security mechanisms for all gig workers in the state. The unions remain vigilant, committed to advocating for their members’ rights and wellbeing.

The Telangana education department has mandated that all private unaided schools display their class-wise fee structures for the academic year 2026-27 on their notice boards and official websites. This directive aims to promote transparency regarding the fees charged by these institutions.

E Naveen Nicolas, the state director of school education, has communicated that enforcement of this requirement will involve school officials ensuring compliance within their jurisdictions. The fee details must also be uploaded to the education department’s online portal, accessible at schooledu.telangana.gov.in, alongside the display on school premises.

The measures are part of a broader initiative to standardise fee disclosures across the private education sector in the state, thereby allowing parents and guardians to make informed choices.

Supporting Documentation Required from Schools

In line with the fee structure disclosure, the education department has instructed schools to upload supporting documents that validate the fee amounts set for each class for the upcoming academic year. According to the requirements stipulated in a 1994 government order, these documents must be endorsed with the signatures of the members of the school’s governing body.

The Regional Joint Directors of School Education and District Educational Officers have been assigned the responsibility of monitoring adherence to these regulations. This aims to ensure consistency and accountability among private unaided schools, which are often scrutinised for fee practices.

Nicolas indicated that a specific feature has been established on the education department’s portal to facilitate the uploading of fee structures and corresponding documentation. This development is designed to streamline the process for schools and enhance accessibility for the public.

Consequences for Non-Compliance

The education department has conveyed that show-cause notices will be issued to institutions that fail to comply with the requirement of displaying their fee structures on notice boards and websites. These measures underline the department’s commitment to enforcing the new disclosure regulations.

Furthermore, schools that do not adhere to these directives will potentially face punitive actions in accordance with the provisions of the 1994 government order. This underscores the seriousness with which the state addresses matters of educational finance and transparency.

The initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to regulate the fee structures of private schools in Telangana, as parents increasingly demand clarity regarding educational costs. The education department aims to foster an environment of trust and accountability between educational institutions and the families they serve.

The Telangana Labour Department has assembled an urgent joint conciliation meeting with key platform companies due to an impending indefinite strike by gig and platform workers starting on August 8. This meeting is a response to formal representations from the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) and the Telangana App-Based Drivers Forum (TADF). The gathering aims to address the concerns raised by the workers, focusing on their demands for improved working conditions and wages.

Attendance of Platform Companies Required

Representatives from major companies such as Ola, Uber, Rapido, Porter, Swiggy, Zomato, Zepto, and Blinkit have been instructed to attend the meeting with their authorised personnel and relevant documentation. This directive indicates the seriousness of the situation and the government’s intention to facilitate negotiations between the concerned parties. The meeting is considered a critical step towards resolving the ongoing disputes between the workers and the platform companies.

According to Shaik Salauddin, the Founder President of the TGPWU, this marks the final government-level conciliation gathering prior to the planned strike. The outcome of this meeting is poised to influence the future actions of several lakh gig, platform, app-based cab, auto, and delivery workers across the state of Telangana. With such a large number of individuals potentially affected, the government is under pressure to find a resolution that addresses the core issues of the workers.

Key Demands of Gig Workers Highlighted

The worker unions are voicing long-standing demands that revolve around wages, welfare, and working conditions. Notably, the TGPWU President has insisted on the removal of the 10-minute delivery option from all platforms and the reinstatement of a previous payout structure. In a statement to ANI on July 22, the TGPWU outlined three prominent demands that they hope will be addressed.

First, they are calling for an immediate increase in fares, emphasising that their previous appeals to both the government and platform companies have not received adequate attention. Secondly, the unions are insisting on the immediate implementation of the Gig and Platform Workers Act, which was passed but has yet to be fully enacted. Lastly, the unions are urging the state government to implement the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines from 2020 and 2025 without further delay. The unions also advocate for discussions and feedback sessions involving stakeholders, particularly the workers themselves.

Additionally, the unions are opposed to the use of white number plate vehicles for commercial rides, a practice they believe undermines fair competition and safety standards in the gig economy. The upcoming meeting holds significant potential for addressing these pressing issues, which have been longstanding obstacles for gig workers seeking better conditions and recognition within the industry.

Microsoft has inaugurated its largest data centre in India, aiming to enhance its presence in the nation’s burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) sector. The newly established India South Central cloud region, located in Hyderabad, was officially launched on August 6, 2026.

This facility is now operational and being utilised by significant enterprises, including Adani Group and HDFC Bank. With this expansion, Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure in India now comprises four regions, including existing centres in Pune, Chennai, and Mumbai, solidifying its position as the country’s foremost cloud service provider.

The timing of this launch aligns with substantial investments being made by global tech firms in India, which are recognizing the country’s vast internet user base, thriving startup ecosystem, and increasing AI adoption as key growth drivers for future cloud computing development.

Investment Signifies Commitment to India

Microsoft has allocated approximately $20.5 billion to bolster its operations within India, ranking it among the company’s most significant investment locations outside the United States. This commitment signals a robust belief in the potential of India’s digital landscape.

As AI services increasingly rely on cloud infrastructure, having powerful data centres becomes crucial for the training of AI models and processing large volumes of information. Microsoft’s investment in local facilities aims to attract more businesses seeking to store and manage their data within India.

The company reported that its Azure cloud segment has experienced double-digit revenue growth over the past two years, reflecting a rising need for enterprises to transition their workloads to cloud platforms. Microsoft’s collaboration with Reliance Jio, which includes two additional data centres, further enhances its operational footprint in the country.

Competitive Landscape and Environmental Concerns

This expansion by Microsoft arrives amidst competing efforts from Google and Amazon, both of which are investing substantially in enhancing data centre capabilities in India, as they view the nation as a pivotal market for future AI advancements. However, these projects have not been without challenges.

Google’s proposed $15 billion hyperscale data centre hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, has faced growing opposition from environmental advocacy groups. Concerned activists argue that the facility could exacerbate local water shortages and disturb nearby wildlife habitats, leading to protests with slogans like “We cannot drink DATA.” Legal challenges pertaining to water usage and the site’s proximity to Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary have also been raised.

In response, Google has asserted that it will adhere to all relevant regulations and implement advanced air-cooling technologies to minimise water consumption. The Andhra Pradesh government has rejected claims that the project was expedited without appropriate environmental evaluations and has expressed willingness to address legitimate public concerns.

This controversy underscores a broader global apprehension surrounding the environmental impact of AI infrastructure. Modern data centres are known for their substantial electricity and water consumption for cooling processes, prompting similar protests in various parts of the world, including the United States.

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has met Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil in New Delhi to request the Central Government’s involvement in resolving a long-standing dispute with Maharashtra regarding the Tummidihetti Barrage’s height. The meeting took place on August 5 and was attended by Telangana Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy along with several Members of Parliament representing the state.

During the discussion, Revanth Reddy urged Minister Patil to facilitate direct communications with the Maharashtra government to approve the construction of the barrage at a height of 150 metres. This contrasts with the 148 metres that Maharashtra has reportedly agreed to. The Chief Minister indicated that the revised height would not significantly increase the submergence area, which is anticipated to remain under 1,000 hectares, thereby improving irrigation potential.

Reddy further expressed that raising the height of the barrage to 150 metres would enhance the project’s overall utility while avoiding major displacement or environmental issues. He placed an emphasis on the practical benefits this height adjustment would bring to the region.

Strategic Importance of the Barrage

The Tummidihetti Barrage is a critical element of Telangana’s irrigation strategy, particularly for the northern districts. The project aims to utilise water from the Pranahita River, which is a significant tributary of the Godavari River. It has faced several delays due to ongoing disagreements between Telangana and Maharashtra concerning the permissible Full Reservoir Level (FRL) and the affected submergence areas in Maharashtra.

Following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, the Tummidihetti Barrage project has undergone multiple modifications. The Telangana government has consistently argued that increasing the barrage’s height would lead to enhanced irrigation coverage while keeping any additional submergence within acceptable limits.

Revanth Reddy elaborated on the advantages of a gravity-based irrigation system associated with the barrage. This system would alleviate the need for extensive lift irrigation infrastructure, thereby lowering project costs and energy requirements while also promoting sustainable water management practices.

Request for Proactive Central Role

In his conversation with Minister Patil, Chief Minister Reddy stressed the necessity for the Centre to take a proactive stance in mediating the inter-state issue. He requested that the government initiate consultations with Maharashtra to expedite the implementation of the project.

Reddy underscored that a timely resolution would significantly boost irrigation development, enhance water availability for agricultural purposes, and ultimately benefit farmers across the region. He expressed hope that the central government’s involvement would pave the way for a quicker solution to the dispute, which has been pending for several years.

The Tummidihetti Barrage project not only constitutes a vital part of Telangana’s irrigation framework but also has broader implications for the agricultural landscape of the region. Reddy’s appeal for intervention highlights the complexities involved in inter-state water resource management and the need for coordinated efforts to resolve such disputes.
