Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjit Singh was shot and killed early on Friday morning near the Bhagtanwala grain market in Amritsar, in what is being investigated as a targeted attack. The incident occurred while Singh was on duty at around 8 am. Singh, in his early 50s and a resident of Tarn Taran district, was stationed at the Gate Hakima police station. Eyewitnesses claim the attackers, who were allegedly riding motorcycles, opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene.

This incident marks the fourth attack on police personnel in Punjab this year, raising concerns among law enforcement agencies. Preliminary investigations indicate that the assailants might have followed Singh before carrying out the shooting. Police teams are currently reviewing CCTV footage and analysing technical data, including mobile-phone records, to trace the attackers’ movements.

A .30-bore shell was recovered at the crime scene, and forensic examinations along with post-mortem investigations are expected to shed light on further details regarding the incident.

Pattern of Attacks on Police Personnel

The attack on Harjit Singh has heightened existing fears regarding a pattern of targeted shootings aimed at police in Punjab, particularly in regions close to the Amritsar border. Lower- and middle-ranking police officials have become prime targets due to their predictable routines, making it easier for assailants to execute hit-and-run attacks. Most recent incidents have involved assailants arriving on motorcycles, quickly executing the attack, and disappearing.

This escalation follows a recent incident on September 11, when ASI Jaswant Singh was also targeted in the Ajnala region. Gunmen on motorcycles opened fire as he was returning home, with a bullet narrowly missing his head. Luckily, he reached Ajnala police station and was later deemed to be out of danger. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan (TTH) took responsibility for that attack, raising questions about its affiliations with local gangs.

Authorities are considering whether the same criminal network was involved in Singh’s murder. Investigations are underway to ascertain links with gangster Shahzad Bhatti’s group, which was banned by the Home Ministry under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act on September 16.

Concerns Over Arms Trafficking and Security Measures

The evolving situation has led to heightened scrutiny of methods used to smuggle weapons and drugs into Punjab. Drones allegedly carrying arms have reportedly crossed into the Amritsar sector, posing a significant threat to the region’s security. A senior official noted that nearly 40 drones were tracked in a span of three days, though only three were intercepted, carrying Glock pistols and .30-bore weapons.

Recent operations by the Punjab Police have led to the seizure of various firearms, including AK-47 rifles, foreign-made weapons, and narcotics, indicating an ongoing influx of illegal arms. Between September 3 and 16, police reported significant recoveries across Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot.

In response to the increasing threat, Punjab Police have enhanced their border surveillance capabilities. Currently, they operate nine anti-drone systems, including three Baaj Akh units in strategic locations. Furthermore, 52 Drone Response Teams, consisting of 147 personnel, are collaborating with the Border Security Force (BSF) to tackle this challenge. However, security officials have noted that rapidly advancing drone technology and the inefficacy of fixed checkpoints continue to pose significant challenges in maintaining security along the 553-km border with Pakistan.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has voiced his opposition to the filing of First Information Reports (FIRs) against farmers involved in stubble burning. He reiterated the importance of providing financial assistance from the central government to farmers who opt not to burn crop residue. His comments were made just days before the commencement of the paddy harvesting season in Punjab, where farmers are advocating for a cash incentive of Rs 3,000 per acre to manage stubble effectively.

The issue of stubble burning has significant implications, particularly as it reportedly contributes to increasing air pollution levels in the Delhi-NCR region. Following the paddy harvest in October and November, farmers face a race against time to clear their fields for the rabi wheat crop, typically resulting in many resorting to burning leftover crop residue. This practice remains a contentious point in discussions about environmental damage and public health.

During an event marking the inauguration of the two-day Kisan Mela at Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana, Mann highlighted the usual blame directed towards Punjab farmers for pollution emanating from stubble burning. He noted that while the Centre acknowledges Punjab’s contribution of 180 lakh metric tonnes of paddy to the national pool, it often overlooks the proportion of crop residue involved in that total. Mann expressed concern over the proposal to register FIRs against farmers, stating the logic behind such claims appeared flawed.

Call for Financial Support for Farmers

Mann articulated his stance that farmers do not wish to burn paddy stubble, as they are also adversely affected by the smoke produced in the process. He stated that he had previously communicated to the Centre the necessity of creating financial support structures for farmers to manage crop residues rather than penalising them.

Mann referenced pollution impacts extending beyond Indian borders, quoting remarks from Pakistan’s Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who indicated that smoke from stubble burning also affects Lahore. The Chief Minister challenged the narrative that only Punjab’s emissions contribute to the air quality problems in the region, questioning if pollutants from neighbouring states like Haryana and Uttar Pradesh are being ignored.

He emphasized the need to refrain from vilifying Punjab farmers and suggested a collaborative approach to address the issue collectively rather than attributing blame solely to one region. Some farmer organisations are interpreting Mann’s statements as politically motivated, particularly with upcoming Assembly elections in mind.

Leaders from Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) and BKU (Lakhowal) have called for the revocation of existing FIRs against farmers for stubble burning, insisting that the focus should shift to providing the required financial incentives to facilitate better management of stubble.

Recent Trends in Stubble Burning Incidents

Historically, Punjab has witnessed a substantial number of stubble burning incidents, with a stark contrast noted in recent years. Data reveals a drastic 86 per cent reduction in such incidents, decreasing from 36,663 in 2023 to 10,909 in 2024, and further to 5,114 in 2025. In previous years, the state recorded 49,922, 71,304, and 76,590 farm fire events in 2022, 2021, and 2020, respectively, with districts like Sangrur and Mansa seeing a high frequency of occurrences.

The Punjab government has been proactive in combating stubble burning through various awareness campaigns aimed at educating farmers about the health and environmental implications of this practice. Additionally, the state provides subsidised crop residue management equipment to assist farmers in transitioning away from burning.

Moreover, financial support of 50 per cent for individual farmers and 80 per cent for cooperative organisations and panchayats. In conclusion, Mann’s statements highlight his opposition to punitive measures directed at farmers while advocating for improved financial support systems to address stubble management, echoing concerns as the harvest season approaches.

The family of Baljinder Singh, a truck driver from Punjab, is seeking intervention from both the Punjab government and the Indian central government after he received a death sentence in Saudi Arabia for drug trafficking. The case has garnered significant attention, as his family believes he is innocent of the charges. They claim that Baljinder unknowingly became embroiled in a serious legal situation after accepting a request to carry a package on his trip.

Baljinder, hailing from the village of Sujanpur in Pathankot district, faced detention in Saudi Arabia for nearly three years. Reports indicate that narcotics were discovered in a medicine packet he was transporting across the Dubai-Saudi Arabia border. His family explains that Baljinder had been working in Dubai as a truck driver for almost a decade, often making trips to Saudi Arabia for transporting goods.

According to the family, prior to one of his trips, a colleague in Dubai allegedly requested Baljinder to carry a packet of medicine for an elderly patient residing in Saudi Arabia. Unbeknownst to him, the package contained narcotics. When authorities inspected his vehicle at the border, they found the drugs, leading to his immediate arrest.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

Following his arrest, Baljinder was tried in a Saudi court, which subsequently convicted him of involvement in drug trafficking. The court’s decision resulted in a death sentence, which has shocked his family and community back home. They adamantly maintain that Baljinder had no awareness of any illegal activities related to the package he carried.

The family’s efforts to contest the ruling have thus far been unsuccessful, prompting them to urge the Punjab and central governments to provide legal and diplomatic assistance. They are seeking justice for Baljinder and are keen to highlight their belief in his innocence. The family describes the ordeal as harrowing, with the weight of the situation affecting their mental and emotional well-being.

In the wake of the conviction, Baljinder’s family has been vocal in their appeals to government authorities, underscoring the urgency of securing his release. They have expressed concern about the impending execution and the implications it carries for their loved one. The family’s plea also seeks to shine a light on the complexities involved in international drug trafficking cases and the potential for wrongful convictions.

Public Support and International Awareness

The case has raised awareness among local communities in Punjab, with numerous individuals and organisations rallying behind Baljinder’s family. Many have voiced their concerns about the fairness of the legal process in foreign jurisdictions, especially surrounding drug-related offences. The family has been encouraged by this public support, which they believe will help draw attention to their cause and prompt authorities to act.

In light of the ongoing situation, Baljinder’s family continues to stress the importance of legal representation and representation on an international level. They hope that with sufficient governmental and public backing, they can present a strong case for Baljinder’s release. Meanwhile, they remain in constant contact with legal experts to explore further avenues for appeal.

As the situation develops, the family’s hopes hinge on diplomatic channels and legal frameworks that can advocate for justice in Baljinder’s case. They remain dedicated to fighting for his freedom and restoring fairness to their lives, highlighting a poignant narrative of an innocent man caught in a web of international drug laws.

The recent incident involving BJP leader Ravneet Bittu unfolded as he allegedly attempted to throw tomatoes and eggs at the convoy of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. This event took place whilst the Chief Minister was travelling, showcasing heightened tensions between political parties in the state. The incident attracted immediate attention from the media and the public, prompting law enforcement to intervene swiftly.

Details of the Incident

This attempt to disrupt the convoy has raised questions about the current political climate in Punjab. Allegations of political unrest have been voiced from multiple quarters, indicating a growing disconnect between various political entities and the public. The BJP’s discontent with the state government’s decisions was reportedly a contributing factor to this incident.

Police officials confirmed that Bittu was taken into custody for further questioning. While details surrounding the specific charges remain undisclosed, law enforcement agencies are examining the incident closely. The political implications of this event and its potential repercussions on ongoing relationships between the parties involved will likely unfold over the coming days.

Political Reactions

Political reactions to this incident have been notable, with both parties issuing statements. The BJP has condemned the state government, alleging that it is fostering an environment where dissent is met with hostility. Meanwhile, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has responded by asserting that such acts of aggression are unacceptable in a democratic framework. These reactions serve to underline the increasingly combative atmosphere in Punjab politics.

Supporters of Bittu have voiced their dismay at the incident, framing it as a reflection of their frustrations towards the Chief Minister’s administration. Conversely, advocates for the AAP have expressed relief that their leader was seemingly unharmed during this altercation, reinforcing their stance on political civility. The juxtaposition of these perspectives illustrates the polarisation within the political landscape of Punjab.

As the news travels, social media discussions are intensifying, with many weighing in on both the act of protest and the subsequent detention. Prominent politicians and public figures are joining the conversation, highlighting a growing concern about the safety of political events and the need for a dialogue between the contrasting parties.

Implications for Political Discourse

This event not only marks a significant escalation in political protests within Punjab but also raises broader concerns about political discourse in the region. As tensions escalate, the potential for violence at political gatherings becomes a pressing concern for law enforcement agencies and public officials alike. Observers are closely monitoring how both political parties manage the fallout from this incident and whether it leads to a change in their strategies moving forward.

Authorities are expected to review security protocols surrounding political events and gatherings to prevent similar occurrences. The need for an inclusive dialogue between parties may become a priority for stakeholders aiming to stabilise the political environment. As this story develops, further updates from official sources will shed light on the legal ramifications and any potential changes in policy regarding political protests.

The situation remains fluid, with both immediate and long-term repercussions for the political landscape in Punjab. Residents and political analysts alike are attentive to how these developments will influence public sentiment and party dynamics in the region in the coming months.

The recent killing of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Harjeet Singh has been confirmed in Amritsar. This tragic event occurred early on Friday, September 18, 2026, as the officer was performing his duties. ASI Singh, aged around fifty, was shot three times in the Gate Hakima area at approximately 2:30 am. It has been reported that unidentified assailants fired upon him while he was stationed at that location.

Following the shooting, ASI Singh was promptly transported to Amandeep Hospital. However, medical personnel were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The motive for the attack remains unclear at this point, leading authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The police have initiated a thorough examination to ascertain the reasons for the shooting, gathering information and evidence that may shed light on this unfortunate event. Further updates are anticipated as the investigation progresses.

Government Support for the Family

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has taken steps to provide financial assistance to the family of ASI Harjeet Singh. In a public announcement, he declared an ex-gratia payment of Rs 1 crore for the bereaved family. This financial support aims to help them during this challenging time. The Chief Minister emphasised the government’s commitment to supporting police personnel and their families.

In addition to the state aid, HDFC Bank has also pledged a separate insurance payout of Rs 1 crore, further enhancing the financial support available to the family. The Chief Minister expressed condolences and stressed that the bravery and dedication of ASI Singh would not be forgotten, highlighting the sacrifice made in the line of duty.

Bhagwant Mann also reassured the family that the Punjab government would remain by their side, offering any possible assistance as they navigate their loss. This response underscores the government’s recognition of the risks faced by law enforcement personnel in their service to the community.

Police Response and Tributes

Punjab’s Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, is expected to visit Amritsar later in the day to oversee the situation and offer support to the local police. During his visit, he will participate in honouring ASI Singh, ensuring that he receives the full police honours that accompany such sacrifices.

In a statement shared on the social media platform X, DGP Yadav conveyed his tribute to the fallen officer, asserting that Harjeet Singh had “laid down his life in the line of duty.” He reiterated the Punjab Police’s solidarity with Singh’s family, reinforcing their commitment to provide support during this difficult time.

As investigations continue, the police are focused on obtaining further details about the shooting and its underlying causes. The swift action taken by local authorities in response to this tragedy highlights the gravity of the situation and the commitment to protect those who serve the community. Updates on the investigation are expected as authorities work diligently to establish the facts behind the incident.

Punjab’s Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has asserted that he possesses evidence to refute the Opposition’s claims regarding the suicide of farmer Gulzar Singh. Cheema made this statement on Wednesday, stating, “I have all the evidence. The investigation is ongoing, and when the time comes, I will reveal how the Opposition is exploiting this issue for political gain.” His comments come in the wake of allegations concerning the circumstances surrounding Singh’s death.

Circumstances Surrounding Gulzar Singh’s Death

Gulzar Singh, a farmer from Tur Banjara village in Sangrur district, tragically took his own life on September 7. Reports indicate that he consumed poison following an incident on September 6, where he expressed concerns regarding drug sales to Minister Cheema during a development programme.

His family has alleged that Gulzar faced harassment and derogatory remarks, reportedly from members of the village panchayat, after raising the issue with the minister. According to family members, Gulzar informed Cheema about the rampant drug trade in the area, pointing out that his son struggled with addiction to ‘chitta’, a slang term for heroin used in Punjab.

They contend that Gulzar was subsequently pressured to retract his statements and issue an apology, leading to significant emotional distress that ultimately resulted in his suicide. Conversely, representatives from the village sarpanch have dismissed these claims as baseless, stating that there was no intention to intimidate or coerce Gulzar into apologising for his statements. This disagreement has intensified tensions surrounding the case.

Political Implications and Reactions

The reported suicide has provoked a strong response from Opposition parties, including the Congress and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP). They have specifically targeted the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), alleging a worsening drug crisis in Punjab over the past four years under their governance. The accusations carry significant weight as AAP seeks to retain control of Punjab in the upcoming Assembly elections, in which gaining public trust has become paramount.

Opposition leaders have capitalised on the situation, claiming that the incident signifies a broader failure of the state government to combat substance abuse and support its agrarian community. The situation has drawn widespread attention, as public sentiment about Punjab’s drug issues remains a critical topic amidst local electoral politics.

The familial and political aspects of this case have created a complex narrative, with heightened emotions on all sides, leading to intensified scrutiny of governmental actions and responsibilities regarding the welfare of farmers and drug-related issues in the state.

New Allegations from Gulzar’s Family

In a surprising turn, Gulzar’s family has further alleged that local administration exerted pressure on them during the funeral process. They accused authorities of preventing them from carrying out traditional rites as per their cultural practices. In a video shared by the family, they have articulated their distress, claiming that they were not allowed to conduct the rituals they deemed necessary to honour Gulzar’s memory.

Gulzar’s family has publicly stated that they will refuse to perform the customary rites associated with his death, including the collection of ashes and the subsequent bhog ceremony, until they receive justice regarding the circumstances surrounding his suicide. This stance reflects their deep-seated grievances and the desire for accountability in light of the tragic event.

This ongoing situation signifies not only the personal implications for Gulzar’s family but also highlights broader systemic issues within Punjab’s socio-political landscape, especially concerning drug abuse and community relations. As investigations proceed, all parties involved await further developments that could influence the narrative significantly.

The Punjab Police’s Counter-Intelligence wing in Amritsar successfully thwarted a cross-border smuggling operation, leading to the arrest of four individuals on September 16. This intervention resulted in the seizure of 27 kg of heroin and a foreign-made .30 bore PX5 pistol along with three cartridges. Punjab’s Director General of Police shared this significant development on social media, highlighting it as a critical move against narcotics and arms trafficking.

Investigation Findings

Initial investigations point to the accused allegedly coordinating with a Dubai-based operator and other cross-border smugglers. The police revealed that the individuals had been engaged in supplying the seized contraband based on instructions received from this foreign contact. The complexities of the operation suggest a well-organised network at play.

In an effort to fully understand the extent of the smuggling activities, an FIR has been lodged at the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) police station in Amritsar. The police are actively pursuing additional lines of inquiry to establish both the backward and forward connections within the network.

Authorities are particularly focused on identifying all parties involved in this smuggling ring, emphasising the importance of dismantling the broader operations that support such illegal activities. Further disclosures from the inquiry are expected in the coming days.

Commitment to Law Enforcement

The Punjab Police reiterated their dedication to combating cross-border smuggling of drugs and arms, confirming that they will maintain rigorous surveillance to prevent such activities. Through their ongoing efforts, the police aim to disrupt organised criminal networks operating in the state, ensuring that law and order is upheld.

Community safety remains a top priority for law enforcement agencies, and the recent operation underscores the proactive measures being deployed. The police’s swift action in this case illustrates their commitment to addressing the challenges posed by narcotics trafficking and illegal arms distribution.

This significant recovery of heroin and arms is part of a wider strategy to curb the influence of drug cartels and criminal enterprises in Punjab. The police have requested the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could indicate smuggling operations in their areas.

Future Implications

The results of this operation may lead to further developments in the investigation as detectives seek to uncover the full scope of the network. Insights gained could pave the way for more targeted operations against similar smuggling activities within Punjab and beyond. The Punjab Police are expected to provide updates as the case progresses.

With drug-related issues having significant social ramifications, law enforcement agencies in Punjab are under increasing pressure to take decisive action. Measures taken in this instance may serve as a template for future operations aimed at addressing the pressing concerns of illegal smuggling and trafficking across Indian borders.

The success of this operation is a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by police and security forces in combating organised crime, especially in regions affected by cross-border criminal activities. However, with their renewed focus and commitment, the Punjab Police aim to confront these challenges head-on.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has declared a heightened offensive against drug peddlers and smugglers, stating that the state government’s anti-drug initiative has entered its concluding phase. During a review meeting of the ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign, which commenced on March 1, 2025, Mann called for a decisive action to eradicate the drug menace in the region. He underscored the transition of the fight against drugs from a purely police-led initiative to a movement involving the entire community.

Enhanced Efforts to Target Drug Hotspots

In his meeting with various government officials, including deputy commissioners and senior superintendents of police from across Punjab, Mann directed them to focus on remaining drug hotspots and enhance collaboration with local residents. The aim is to identify and dismantle the networks supplying illicit drugs. He emphasised the involvement of community members in helping to tackle the issue and noted that this collaboration is essential for effective outreach and intervention.

The Chief Minister stated that 14,846 Village Defence Committees (VDCs), comprising 74,230 active members, are currently operational throughout Punjab. Mann highlighted that of these, 3,808 committees with 36,814 members are particularly engaged in border regions, where the identification of drug-smuggling networks is crucial. He reported a 41 per cent increase in feedback from the VDCs, pointing to greater public engagement in the campaign against drug abuse.

As of January 2026, police have registered 4,129 First Information Reports (FIRs) and arrested 5,589 alleged drug smugglers, primarily due to alerts received from these VDCs. Mann assured that these complaints are being acted upon swiftly, reinforcing the government’s intelligence and feedback mechanisms at the grassroots level.

Role of Technology in Fighting Drug Abuse

The Chief Minister also acknowledged the significance of the Safe Punjab app, which has enabled citizens to report drug-related activities. Over the past year, it has facilitated the registration of approximately 19,310 FIRs and has led to the arrest of 25,138 individuals suspected of drug-related crimes. Mann noted that these figures demonstrate the shift from a police-dominated approach to a community-driven movement in the fight against drug abuse.

While asserting that the state government has made substantial progress in dismantling the supply chains of illicit drugs, Mann cautioned against complacency. He mentioned that, although significant achievements have been made, the ongoing vigilance is crucial to maintain and further these efforts. The commitment to tackling the issue of drug abuse remains steadfast, illustrating the government’s resolve to foster a safer Punjab.

Through the combined efforts of law enforcement, community participation, and technological tools, the Punjab government aims to create a robust framework to combat drug-related issues. As the final phase of this campaign unfolds, officials are urged to prioritise collaboration with citizens to ensure complete eradication of the drug menace from the state.
