Mumbai Monsoon Rains:

Near Chaityabhoomi and the iconic Shivaji Park in Mumbai, passersby often stop to admire detailed portraits taking shape on paper. Sitting quietly with pencils and sketchbooks, Akhilesh Bharti Gautam transforms ordinary moments into works of art. What many people do not know is that his journey as an artist began with what many would consider a failure. A single mark. After missing a passing score in a zoology examination during his Bachelor of Science degree, Akhilesh found himself standing at a crossroads. Instead of continuing down a path chosen for him, he decided to follow the one thing that truly made him happy; Art.

Today, through commissioned portraits, live sketching events and hyper-realistic artwork, he has built a career around his passion while inspiring others to pursue their dreams despite societal expectations.

How One Mark Changed Akhilesh Gautam’s Life

Like countless young Indians, Akhilesh grew up in a family where education was considered the safest route to success. Following the wishes of his family, he pursued science and enrolled in a Bachelor of Science programme. However, during his studies, he received a KT in zoology, missing the passing mark by just one point. For many students, such a setback would have meant trying again and continuing on the same path. For Akhilesh, it became a moment of self-reflection. He realised that while he could continue pursuing a degree and eventually secure a conventional job, it would never bring him the happiness that art did. The disappointment of one examination eventually became the beginning of a completely different journey.

Choosing Art Over a Conventional Career

Leaving academics behind was not an easy decision. Like many Indian parents, Akhilesh’s family initially worried about the uncertainty of a career in art. Financial stability, social acceptance and long-term security were genuine concerns. He also explored opportunities to study art professionally. Institutions such as Mumbai’s prestigious art colleges appeared to be possible options, but financial limitations and eligibility requirements often stood in the way. Instead of giving up, Akhilesh chose a different route. He continued learning independently, using social media, online tutorials and constant practice to improve his skills. Over time, he developed expertise in portrait sketching, realistic drawings and commissioned artwork.

The Artist of Chaityabhoomi and Shivaji Park

Today, Akhilesh is a familiar face near Chaityabhoomi and Shivaji Park, where he creates live sketches and interacts with people from all walks of life. His work includes commissioned portraits, event sketching, birthday celebrations and customised artworks for clients. Each portrait requires patience, observation and attention to detail. For him, sketching is more than simply drawing faces. Every portrait represents a story, a memory and an emotion captured on paper. His ability to connect with people through art has become one of the defining aspects of his journey.

Recognition and Appreciation for His Work

Persistence and dedication eventually brought recognition. One of the memorable moments in Akhilesh’s career came when he created artwork for renowned actress Shabana Azmi. His work was appreciated, and he was honoured for his efforts. For an artist who built his career largely through self-learning and determination, such recognition served as a reminder that passion and hard work can create opportunities even when traditional paths seem closed. Moments like these strengthened his belief that choosing art had been the right decision.

The Challenges Every Artist Faces

The journey, however, has not been without struggles. Like many artists, Akhilesh has encountered people who fail to recognise the value of creative work. He recalls an incident involving a corporate executive who expected a painting free of cost simply because of his professional status. When Akhilesh declined, the interaction turned disrespectful. Experiences like these can discourage many creative professionals. Yet Akhilesh views such moments as part of life and refuses to let negativity affect his passion. He believes that every profession deserves respect and that artists should never undervalue their own work.

“Art Is Heart and Heart Is Art”

Among the most striking aspects of Akhilesh’s personality is his philosophy towards life and creativity. For him, art is not merely a source of income. It is his identity. “Art is heart and heart is art,” he says. According to Akhilesh, the day his heartbeat stops is the day his art stops. The statement reflects how deeply creativity is connected to his existence. He often reflects on how different life might have been had he continued his studies and pursued a conventional profession. Today, despite the uncertainties of an artist’s life, he finds satisfaction in doing what he loves every single day.

A Message for Young Artists

Akhilesh believes that many talented individuals abandon their creative dreams because of social pressure, financial concerns or fear of criticism. His advice to aspiring artists is simple: stay strong, keep practising and ignore negative comments. He rejects the idea that art is only for people who come from privileged backgrounds or possess financial security.According to him, creativity belongs to everyone. Passion, discipline and consistency matter far more than circumstances.

Mumbai woke up to heavy rainfall on Monday, a day after the city received its first significant monsoon showers, bringing relief from hot and humid conditions and easing concerns over declining water reserves. Several parts of the city and adjoining areas witnessed showers early in the morning following an unusually weak start to the southwest monsoon.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai for June 22 and June 23 and indicated that rainfall activity over the Konkan region, including the financial capital, is likely to intensify in the coming days.

Rain Activity Expected to Increase Across Konkan

According to the IMD, rainfall over North Konkan, including Mumbai, is expected to become fairly widespread on June 22 and remain active throughout the week.

The broader Konkan and Goa region is likely to experience widespread rainfall from June 23 onwards.

The weather department has also forecast isolated heavy rainfall across Konkan and Goa between June 22 and June 28.

Areas surrounding Mumbai, including Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts, are also expected to witness increased rain activity over the next few days.

Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Likely

The IMD said thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are likely over Konkan and Goa between June 22 and June 25.

Wind speeds are expected to range between 40 and 50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph in isolated areas.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious during periods of intense weather activity.

Late Monsoon Had Raised Water Concerns

The strengthening of monsoon activity comes after a prolonged dry spell across Maharashtra despite the southwest monsoon reaching parts of the state earlier this month.

Weak monsoon currents had left Mumbai largely dry, resulting in one of the city’s poorest June rainfall periods in more than a decade.

The delay had triggered concerns over water availability, with levels in Mumbai’s seven reservoirs declining significantly.

In response, authorities imposed restrictions on industrial and commercial water usage and curtailed water supply for construction activities.

City Gets Much-Needed Relief

Mumbai depends heavily on rainfall between June and September to replenish reservoirs and maintain uninterrupted water supply throughout the year.

The arrival of sustained rainfall is expected to provide much-needed relief after weeks of anxiety over the delayed monsoon.

With rainfall activity forecast to strengthen further this week, Mumbai could finally witness the southwest monsoon gather momentum after a sluggish start.

The coming days are expected to bring the widespread showers typically associated with the city’s rainy season.

On June 22, a significant meeting was held in Mumbai, where Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde chaired discussions aimed at addressing the demands of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) employees. The outcome of this meeting marked the withdrawal of a strike that had been anticipated by the BEST Employees’ Action Committee. This move was welcomed by the state government as it prioritised negotiations to strengthen the BEST undertaking.

The meeting included vital decisions regarding the financial concerns of employees. Among these decisions, pending gratuity payments were promised to be settled within the current financial year. This commitment demonstrates the government’s effort to alleviate the financial strain on employees who have awaited these payments.

In a notable agreement, it was established that until a new wage agreement is reached, regular BEST employees will receive an interim financial relief of Rs 3,000 per month. Additionally, workers on wet lease contracts will be granted a seasonal increase of Rs 2,000 monthly. This financial adjustment aims to provide immediate support to employees while long-term wage discussions continue.

Key Participants in the Meeting

The meeting at Sahyadri Guest House included several prominent figures. In addition to Deputy Chief Minister Shinde, attendants included Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, MLAs Sachin Ahir and Murji Patel, Additional Chief Secretary Aseem Gupta, Principal Secretary Navin Sona, and Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide. The participation of officials from the BEST administration and employee representatives highlighted the collaborative approach taken to resolve these issues.

Following the discussions, Shinde directed that BEST bus services resume immediately. This instruction was vital for ensuring that Mumbai’s public transport does not face further disruption. Furthermore, the commitment to clear pending gratuity dues within the financial year reflects the administration’s intention to uphold its responsibilities towards its workforce.

Additionally, the Deputy Chief Minister underscored the need for enhancing Mumbai’s public transport infrastructure. Plans were announced to procure 5,000 new buses over the next three years to improve the effectiveness and reach of BEST services. Financial provisions will be structured accordingly to allow for this expansion.

Future Plans for BEST and Employee Welfare

An important aspect of the meeting was the ‘Kayapalat’ (Transformation) proposal, prepared by the BEST administration. Shinde assured that this proposal would be submitted promptly to the government and subsequently presented to the Cabinet for its approval. The proposal aims to modernise BEST operations and improve service delivery across Mumbai.

Shinde emphasised that BEST plays a critical role in Mumbai’s public transport system, referring to it as the city’s lifeline. He stated that strengthening and enhancing the capability of BEST is paramount to ensuring efficient transportation for millions of residents. The ongoing discussions and agreements reflect a commitment to maintaining the reliability of public transport services in Mumbai.

Overall, the outcomes from this meeting highlight significant strides towards resolving employee grievances and enhancing the operational capacity of BEST, ensuring that both the workforce and the commuting public benefit from these initiatives.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has alerted residents of Mumbai after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange warning for the city. This warning, which came into effect on June 22, forecasts thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate to intense rainfall accompanied by gusty winds. The winds may reach speeds of 30-40 kmph at isolated locations over the next three hours, prompting the BMC to urge residents to exercise caution.

Furthermore, the IMD’s nowcast warning indicates that these adverse weather conditions are likely to persist in various parts of Mumbai. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions during this period of inclement weather, especially due to the predicted thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.

Impact of Pre-Monsoon Showers

On the morning of June 22, several areas in Mumbai, including Bandra East, experienced pre-monsoon showers. These showers brought temporary relief from the intense heat but also resulted in waterlogging and traffic disruptions in multiple locations across the city. The sudden change in weather prompted concerns about urban drainage systems and their capacity to handle heavy rainfall.

The onset of the monsoon in Mumbai is expected either later today or tomorrow, with the final announcement from the IMD contingent upon the fulfilment of all required parameters for monsoon onset. As the region anticipates the arrival of the monsoon, residents remain hopeful for respite from the sweltering weather that has currently dominated the season.

In the latest updates from the IMD, conditions are reported to be favourable for the advancement of the southwest monsoon into additional regions of Maharashtra, as well as parts of Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and areas in Chhattisgarh by June 23.

Extended Weather Forecasts for the Region

The IMD’s latest bulletin indicates that very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall will likely affect northeast India until June 25, along with Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim until June 22. The weather department has also forecasted the persistence of heat wave conditions across Vidarbha, East Madhya Pradesh, and East Uttar Pradesh for the next four to five days.

In addition, Chhattisgarh is expected to experience heat wave conditions over the next three days, while similar weather phenomena are projected in Telangana for two days. Regions like Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are also included in this alert concerning increased temperatures.

The IMD predicts isolated to scattered rainfall over the Konkan and Goa region from June 21-22, with a significant intensification of rainfall activity anticipated between June 23 and June 27. Isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, potentially gusting up to 60 kmph, are likely over Konkan, Goa, and Marathwada during the period from June 22-25. Heavy rainfall is also forecasted for Konkan and Goa from June 22-27.

Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar met Uddhav Thackeray, the head of the Shiv Sena (UBT), at his residence, Matoshree, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, on June 21. This meeting was notable due to ongoing internal tensions within the Shiv Sena (UBT), particularly following the absence of six of its Lok Sabha MPs from a crucial parliamentary party meeting.

In attendance alongside Thackeray were Rashmi Thackeray, Aaditya Thackeray, the head of the Yuvasena, and Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut. The meeting reportedly focused on public interest matters, with both leaders expressing their perspectives. Shivakumar shared his thoughts on social media after the meeting, highlighting the positive interaction and discussion of relevant issues.

Speculations Surrounding Party Dynamics

The backdrop of the meeting included growing speculation about a significant shift within the Shiv Sena (UBT), especially concerning the potential defection of parliamentarians to the faction led by Eknath Shinde. This situation mirrors the events of 2022 when a striking number of MPs left to join Shinde, thereby restructuring the party dynamics considerably.

Shivakumar’s visit raised further questions about a possible merger with the Congress party. However, Uddhav Thackeray firmly denied any intentions of merging with Congress during a recent address on the party’s Foundation Day. He stated unequivocally that the Shiv Sena has no plans to align with Congress, thereby dismissing assumptions regarding the coalition.

On the same day, the Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha, Anil Desai, issued a stringent show-cause notice to the absentee MPs, outlining potential disciplinary actions. The notice mandated a response within 24 hours, failing which the MPs could face disqualification under the Indian Constitution’s Tenth Schedule, known as the Anti-Defection Law. This presents a critical moment for the party, as the MPs’ responses may dictate future party composition.

Political Statements and Reactions

In a broader political context, Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the ongoing situation during a public meeting in Kolhapur, asserting that the Shiv Sena has effectively merged into a singular entity led by Eknath Shinde. Shah indicated that previous distinctions between factions are now obsolete, signalling an apparent consolidation ahead of potential electoral contests.

The comments from Shah and the developments surrounding Shivakumar’s meeting highlight the intricate manoeuvring within Maharashtra’s political landscape, particularly as factions seek to solidify their standings. With the backdrop of upcoming elections, these dynamics will influence strategies and alignments among the parties involved.

During his Mumbai visit, DK Shivakumar was also present for the wedding of NCP(SCP) MP Supriya Sule’s daughter, reflecting his active engagement in both political matters and social events. This visit encapsulates the interplay of personal and political spheres within the current climate of Maharashtra’s leadership.

A viral video allegedly showing water leaking from the roof of Navi Mumbai International Airport has sparked widespread discussion on social media, raising concerns about the quality of construction and maintenance at one of India’s newest aviation hubs. The airport, which became operational only a few months ago, was expected to offer world-class facilities and modern infrastructure.

Footage Shows Water Dripping Inside Terminal

In the video circulating online, water can reportedly be seen dripping from sections of the terminal roof. Passengers and visitors were seen gathering around the affected area as the visuals quickly gained attention across social media platforms. Many users questioned whether the airport’s infrastructure was adequately prepared to handle heavy monsoon rains.

Concerns Grow Amid Expanding Operations

The incident comes as Navi Mumbai Airport continues to expand its operations and welcome increasing passenger traffic. Developed to reduce congestion at Mumbai’s existing airport, the facility has been projected as a major boost to regional connectivity, trade, and economic growth. Reports of possible structural issues have therefore attracted significant public scrutiny.

Authorities Yet to Clarify Cause

Despite the widespread attention generated by the video, airport authorities have not yet issued a detailed explanation regarding the alleged leakage. It remains unclear whether the issue was caused by a structural defect, drainage malfunction, or another technical problem. Officials are expected to inspect the affected area and determine the exact cause.

Fresh Debate Over Construction Standards

The incident has reignited discussions about construction quality, maintenance practices, and accountability in large-scale infrastructure projects. Aviation experts and passengers have called for a thorough assessment to ensure safety and prevent similar occurrences in the future. As the monsoon season continues, authorities may face increased scrutiny regarding the airport’s readiness and long-term durability.

A 14-year-old girl from Haryana was rescued in Mumbai after authorities dismantled an alleged sex trafficking operation involving eight individuals, including two couples. The Mira Bhayander Vasai-Virar police reported that the minor was trafficked from Ambala under false pretences, with promises of education. Instead, she was sold into the sex trade for Rs 50,000. The police initiated their investigation following a kidnapping complaint filed in March by one of the main suspects, who posed as her guardian.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Rahul Chavan, detailed that on March 3, Sanjay Gupta, a security guard, reported that the girl had gone missing while she was purportedly out buying supplies for Holi. Allegedly, he claimed she had been kidnapped. However, as the investigation progressed, the police received a tip-off leading them to locate the teenager in Bhayander, Thane district.

Once located, the minor provided crucial information regarding her situation. According to Chavan, a female officer managed to gain the girl’s trust, who subsequently revealed that Gupta was not related to her as he had claimed. Instead, he had lured her with false promises and had actively participated in the abuse she endured.

Findings of the Investigation

During the investigation, authorities discovered that Gupta had reassured the girl’s family in Ambala about her safety and education. However, he brought her to Mumbai, where she was subjected to repeated sexual violence by multiple individuals, including Gupta himself. The survivor ultimately managed to escape her dire circumstances, leading to the police’s involvement.

Senior Police Inspector Mukund Yadav stated that investigations revealed the minor was sold into the sex trade, reinforcing the severity of the trafficking network involved. “While probing the initial kidnapping case, we stumbled upon this deep-rooted sex racket,” Yadav mentioned, highlighting the expansive nature of the criminal activity discovered.

Pursuant to their findings, the police have charged all eight suspects under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) related to kidnapping and rape, as well as provisions from the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. The authorities continue their investigation to uncover additional details of the trafficking operation and to assist any further victims.

Broader Implications and Ongoing Investigations

The initial investigation, which began with what appeared to be a straightforward missing person report, unfolded into a larger inquiry that shed light on systemic issues affecting vulnerable minors. This significant rescue operation underscores the importance of vigilant community reporting and police responsiveness in combatting trafficking networks.

Officials emphasised the need for sustained efforts to address the root causes of such exploitation, particularly for minors in precarious situations. As investigations continue, authorities are examining potential organisational links and the extent of the trafficking ring within the region.

The police remain committed to increasing awareness and preventive measures against similar incidents in the future. As the case progresses through the legal system, additional details may emerge that could lead to further arrests or actions against those involved in exploiting the girl and others like her.
