MLA College from the United Kingdom and the Institute of Marine Engineers (India) (IMEI) have initiated a strategic partnership aimed at offering internationally recognised UK postgraduate education to maritime professionals in India. This collaboration is expected to play a crucial role in the development of India’s maritime workforce while reinforcing educational ties between the UK and India.

The formal announcement of the partnership took place during Singapore Maritime Week 2026 when a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed. The official launch was celebrated at the MLA College India Launch Reception on 2 July 2026, which took place at The Lalit hotel in Mumbai, attracting approximately 150 senior leaders from various sectors, including the government, maritime industry, and academia.

The event showcased the commitment of various stakeholders to enhance collaboration in preparing future maritime leaders. Attendees included prominent figures such as Shri Killi Mohana Rao, Chief Surveyor of the Directorate General of Shipping, among others.

Addressing Industry Challenges Through Education

The partnership emerges at a time when India is advancing its status as a significant player in the global maritime sector through investments in logistics, ports, and green shipping practices. However, the industry faces notable transformations due to decarbonisation and digitalisation trends, necessitating a highly skilled workforce to meet the evolving demands.

By providing access to flexible, recognised postgraduate qualifications, the collaboration between MLA College and IMEI aims to equip maritime professionals with the skills required for advanced roles in this rapidly changing environment. This educational framework allows participants to pursue their studies without needing to relocate, ensuring they can continue their professional careers simultaneously.

The initial programmes offered under this partnership cater to maritime professionals preparing for or seeking advancement beyond their First Engineer and Chief Engineer Certificates of Competency (CoC). These programmes not only enhance technical knowledge but also focus on developing management and leadership skills essential for contemporary maritime contexts.

Commitment to Sustainable Maritime Operations

Among the innovative offerings is MLA College’s MSc in Sustainable Maritime Operations, which addresses the need for skills in decarbonisation and sustainability within the maritime industry. This programme aims to provide professionals with vital insights into sustainable shipping and responsible practices, aligning with the industry’s increasing emphasis on environmental stewardship.

Prof. Mohammad Dastbaz, Principal and CEO of MLA College, highlighted the significance of India’s evolving maritime landscape, stating that this partnership is pivotal for making high-quality education accessible to established professionals. Through this collaboration, there is a clear intention to foster leadership and innovative thinking in maritime practices.

Kaushik Seal, President of IMEI, also underscored the importance of this partnership, indicating that it marks a transformative moment in Indian maritime education. By merging IMEI’s professional network with MLA College’s academic prowess, they aim to provide comprehensive development opportunities tailored to the needs of maritime professionals in India.

Future Prospects of the Partnership

The partnership is positioned as a long-term commitment to enhancing the capabilities of India’s maritime workforce. Both organisations aim to work closely with industry stakeholders and professional bodies to continuously support the evolving educational needs of the sector.

MLA College’s affiliation with GEDU Global Education further amplifies its reach, as it extends access to quality education across numerous countries, impacting over 85,000 students globally. This initiative is designed to enhance knowledge within the maritime sector and set a benchmark for excellence in professional development.

Through this strategic alliance, MLA College and IMEI not only aspire to nurture future maritime leaders but also to strengthen India’s influence in the global maritime economy by cultivating a skilled and knowledgeable workforce ready for upcoming challenges.

The recent report titled ‘The State of Business Calling 2026’, released by Truecaller in collaboration with Tata Tele Business Services and research partner Kantar, indicates that 79 per cent of Indian consumers avoid answering calls from unknown numbers. Interestingly, 76 per cent of these consumers still prefer voice calls over digital alternatives when engaging with businesses.

This disparity highlights a growing trend where customers are becoming selective regarding the calls they choose to answer. While voice communication remains a trusted channel, it is increasingly being filtered due to a variety of factors, including spam and unclear caller identities.

The study surveyed over 500 B2B companies and 1,000 consumers across 17 cities in India. It reveals that despite a preference for voice calls — especially in scenarios requiring clarity or urgency — customers are more reluctant to engage with unfamiliar callers.

Trust Erosion in Voice Communication

Despite the popularity of voice communication, the report suggests a decline in trust among consumers. Factors contributing to this decrease include unsolicited spam calls, the lack of clear context when receiving calls, and inconsistent identity verification from businesses. This erosion of confidence affects even compliant agencies that are seeking to engage meaningfully with their audience.

Priyam Bose, Global Head of Truecaller for Business Go-To-Market, stated that the challenge lies not in the system of calling itself but in the trust and attention levels of consumers. They now expect clear information about who is calling and why, which influences whether they will engage with the call or not.

A significant 49 per cent of consumers expressed that having the ability to arrange callbacks at a suitable time would greatly enhance their willingness to answer such calls. In addition, businesses themselves are prioritising clear caller identities and the purposes of calls, recognising the need to build trust through transparency.

Misalignment Between Business Practices and Consumer Expectations

The findings indicate a concerning misalignment between how companies utilise voice communication and the metrics they use to evaluate its success. Although 41 per cent of businesses emphasise trust and brand perception as key drivers, the performance metrics they typically track, such as Response Rate and Time to Resolution, fail to capture the broader impacts of voice communication, such as customer satisfaction and retention.

Despite functioning as a vital relationship-building tool, voice communication is often still managed as a transactional channel, leading businesses to underutilise its potential benefits. Regulations like Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and the use of specific number series aim to classify promotional and service calls, yet consumers may still receive important service-related calls unwantedly.

According to Vishal Rally, Chief Revenue Officer of Tata Teleservices, voice remains essential for enterprise communication, especially in situations that require immediate human interaction. He stressed the importance of intelligent communication solutions that are secure and context-aware to keep pace with evolving customer expectations.

Significance Across Various Industries

Voice communication plays a pivotal role in sectors where urgency and trust are paramount, such as Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI) and IT services, where it is crucial for compliance and verification processes. Additionally, e-commerce and logistics increasingly integrate voice with digital channels for managing transactions and customer support.

The report also introduces proprietary benchmarks, including the Voice Adoption Index and Feature Engagement Index, designed to assist businesses in evaluating their current status and guiding future investments in communication strategies.

Truecaller, with a global user base of 500 million and over 68 billion spam calls identified in the previous year, shows the pervasiveness of this issue. The combination of Truecaller’s infrastructure and Tata Teleservices’ enterprise solutions aims to address these challenges while enhancing consumer engagement across the board.

Lloyds Realty Developers Limited has introduced a new brand identity, highlighting a strategic evolution in its approach as a prominent real estate developer based in Mumbai. This announcement arrives during a significant period for the company, which boasts a project portfolio valued at over Rs. 23,500 crore and has successfully delivered more than three million square feet of real estate. Additionally, approximately fourteen million square feet are currently under development, indicating a robust pipeline for future projects.

As part of its refined brand positioning, Lloyds Realty aims to develop projects worth over Rs. 10,000 crore across nine key micro-markets in Mumbai within the next eight years. This ambitious plan reflects the company’s commitment to its evolution as a premium developer, catering to increasingly discerning customer preferences in the bustling Mumbai real estate market.

Visual Identity and Design Language

The core of the new brand identity is encapsulated in a modern visual design, featuring a monochromatic palette and a distinctive new logo centred around the numeral “1.” This symbol is intended to convey a sense of focus, leadership, and a singular commitment to excellence within the realm of real estate development. While the company’s foundational values and legacy remain intact, the refined visual aesthetics signify a strategic shift towards a more premium market positioning in Mumbai.

According to Mr. Ravi Agarwal, Chairman and Managing Director, the rebranding reflects not just a visual change but also a transformation in the company’s ethos and mission. He stated that the evolving nature of customer expectations necessitates developments that prioritise genuine value and experiences over mere structures. The goal for the next five years is to have Lloyds Realty emerge as one of Mumbai’s most reputable premium developers.

Sunil Mahadik, Creative Head at Minds Collective, emphasised that the new brand identity serves a crucial purpose beyond mere recognition, aiming to illustrate the company’s long-term aspirations. The blending of the ‘L’ from Lloyds with the numeral ‘1’ symbolises a unique representation of leadership and excellence, while the choice of a monochromatic palette is designed to convey a sense of sophistication and timelessness.

Core Values and Future Directions

This fresh identity also signals a significant shift in Lloyds Realty’s brand philosophy, evolving from the previous maxim of “Value Buildings, Building Values” to a new vision termed “Building Soulful Spaces.” This updates the company’s focus to prioritise developments that foster meaningful experiences and lasting community ties, thus transcending transactional relationships.

The rollout of this new identity will be comprehensive, affecting all customer and stakeholder interactions, including project sites, marketing communications, digital platforms, and corporate materials. Current customers, employees, and other stakeholders can expect the same level of trust, transparency, and service excellence that has been characteristic of Lloyds Realty.

Lloyds Realty Developers Limited, previously known as Aristo Realty Developers Ltd., has a legacy spanning over thirty years in Mumbai’s redevelopment sector. Its portfolio encompasses premium residential and redevelopment projects across prominent micro-markets. The company continues to deliver quality spaces, including notable projects like The Nilayam in Goregaon and Solace in Dadar (West), which exemplify its commitment to providing enduring value in urban development.

Bollywood actress Bhagyashree has voiced her support for World Animal Protection’s campaign aimed at ceasing elephant rides at Amer Fort in Jaipur. Known for her iconic role in the film ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, Bhagyashree has long been an advocate for animal welfare. Her childhood experiences instilled in her a sense of compassion for animals, and she has since realised the widespread cruelty they endure globally.

As an enthusiastic traveller, she has seen wild elephants and other animals in their natural habitats, which has further emphasised the need for their freedom. However, millions of wild animals, including elephants, are often confined and exploited for entertainment, particularly in tourist areas like Amer Fort.

Jaipur, often referred to as the pride of Rajasthan, attracts numerous visitors eager to experience its rich history and culture. The city’s Amer Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site that showcases its royal heritage, contributing to the allure for tourists.

Conditions Faced by Elephants

Bhagyashree has shed light on the harsh realities faced by the elephants involved in rides. She revealed that behind the picturesque images and decorations lie the miserable conditions of almost eighty elephants, who live lives filled with pain and confinement. Many of these animals are subjected to long hours of chaining, deprived of essentials such as adequate food, veterinary care, and natural behaviours.

When not offering rides at Amer Fort, these elephants often continue to work in areas like Haathi Gaon, where their suffering persists. Bhagyashree emphasised the emotional and intellectual capabilities of elephants, underscoring their ability to form strong family bonds and experience a range of feelings.

She expressed deep sorrow at the sight of these majestic beings being reduced to mere attractions for human amusement. According to her, elephants are not meant for entertainment, but belong in their natural habitats where they can lead fulfilling lives.

Uncovering the Training Practices

Bhagyashree further revealed disturbing aspects of how elephants are trained, detailing a cruel process known as “the crush.” This method involves the forceful separation of calves from their mothers, designed to break their spirits and ensure compliance during rides and performances. The trauma experienced by these young animals is immense, as they are subjected to fear and distress for the sake of entertainment.

She believes many tourists, both domestic and international, remain unaware of the suffering that lies behind the scenes. Most visitors focus solely on the experience of riding a decorated elephant, oblivious to the hidden pain involved.

Bhagyashree pointed out that despite India designating elephants as the National Heritage Animal, the reality for many remains bleak as they endure such treatment for tourism. She advocates for celebrating Rajasthan’s culture and heritage in ways that do not involve animal cruelty, stressing that true heritage should embody compassion and respect for living beings.

Call for Change and Rehabilitation

In support of World Animal Protection’s initiative, Bhagyashree is calling for a ban on elephant rides in Jaipur and advocating for the rehabilitation of these elephants to proper sanctuaries where they can live freely and with care. World Animal Protection has acknowledged her efforts and the significance of her support, especially following the recent death of an elephant named Chanchal, which has drawn further attention to this pressing issue.

The organisation, part of the Asia For Animals coalition comprising 241 groups, has reached out to the Chief Wildlife Warden of Rajasthan to request an end to elephant rides. Furthermore, World Animal Protection has welcomed new animal welfare standards announced by the Ministry of Tourism, hoping these measures will lead to the discontinuation of such practices.

Gajender Kumar Sharma, the Country Director for World Animal Protection in India, expressed gratitude for Bhagyashree’s involvement. He stated that her plea could help raise awareness and ultimately bring about an end to elephant rides with government support.

The Digital Sakhi initiative highlights the role of women in bridging gaps in India’s digital landscape. Despite the country boasting over 970 million internet subscribers, there remains a stark urban-rural divide in digital access. Urban areas report an internet penetration of around 111 subscriptions per 100 individuals, while rural regions lag significantly with approximately 46 per 100. The gender digital divide is also pronounced, with only 33 per cent of women having ever used the internet, compared to 57 per cent of men, according to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5).

As cyber activities increase, so do concerns about cyber fraud. In 2024, more than 36.3 lakh incidents of financial cyber fraud were reported, resulting in losses exceeding ₹22,845 crore, marking a 206 per cent increase from the previous year. Addressing these challenges requires a focus on improving digital accessibility among underserved groups, particularly women in rural areas.

Rajasthan exemplifies these issues, ranking twelfth among Indian states in terms of digitalisation. Women in rural communities face significant barriers regarding access, affordability, and digital literacy, underscoring the need for targeted interventions to foster equitable digital development.

Case Studies of Digital Sakhis Making a Difference

Varsha Bhat, a Digital Sakhi from Bhimal village in Udaipur, recently accomplished connecting seven family members to government welfare schemes. After aiding the family with pension-related issues that were unresolved for months, she helped three elderly members receive old-age pension benefits. Additionally, Varsha expedited the widow pension for a grieving widow within a month of her husband’s death, and facilitated Aadhaar registration for three children, showcasing the impact of informed guidance.

Similarly, Meena Regar, a Digital Sakhi from Rajsamand, supported Dharati Rajka, a widow and mother of four. Following a fatal accident, Dharati received assistance securing an accidental insurance claim under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme. Meena further helped her navigate applications for both the Widow Pension and Palanhar Schemes. This case illustrates the essential role of Digital Sakhis in providing timely support to vulnerable families.

Cyber safety awareness is another area where Digital Sakhis are making strides. Bhagwanti Jat, for example, successfully avoided a potential scam by following the safety protocols she learned during training. By being cautious and verifying information, she safeguarded herself from financial loss, subsequently educating others in her community about the importance of cyber vigilance.

Expanding Digital Literacy for Lasting Impact

The Digital Sakhi programme, initiated in 2024 by L&T Finance and the Manjari Foundation, aims to enhance digital and financial inclusion in Rajasthan. An independent baseline study revealed alarming gaps, indicating that only 32 per cent of community members were aware of government schemes and a mere 18 per cent had adopted digital services. The programme seeks to empower local women to act as champions for digital literacy, enabling them to disseminate knowledge about financial opportunities and government resources.

Each Digital Sakhi is equipped with a tablet featuring multilingual training materials, hands-on exposure to digital banking, and cyber safety practices. This innovative approach, based on experiential learning, fosters confidence and enhances problem-solving skills among women, who then support households in accessing essential services.

Over two years, the initiative has positively impacted more than 2.5 lakh individuals, helping over 15,000 families access social entitlement schemes worth ₹45 crore. Independent evaluations indicate significant improvements in awareness and adoption of digital tools. The programme exemplifies how community-led efforts can foster inclusive development, enabling women to become informed and active participants in the digital economy.

Recent developments in several villages across Gujarat indicate a growing dissent against the organisation of Pride events. Residents have expressed concerns regarding the suitability of such celebrations in their local contexts. This shift in community sentiment has been reportedly influenced by cultural and traditional values prevalent in the areas.

The opposition intensified following a local meeting where villagers shared their reservations about the potential impact of Pride events on the younger generation. They argued that these celebrations contradict long-standing cultural norms, creating friction within the community. Several representatives voiced their unease, highlighting fears that such public displays could lead to social fragmentation.

Moreover, some villagers mentioned that the presence of Pride events could lead to an increase in tensions, particularly among different social groups. The apprehensions are rooted in a belief that such events might alienate sections of the populace who hold contrasting views about sexual orientation and identity.

Economic Considerations and Local Sentiments

In addition to cultural concerns, economic factors also play a role in the resistance against Pride parades. Some villagers suggested that resources allocated for these events could have been better utilised to address pressing local issues, such as infrastructure development and healthcare. Local leaders underscored the necessity of prioritising community needs over external influences.

Concerns regarding potential economic repercussions were amplified by reports of decreased participation from local businesses. Some shopkeepers have expressed reluctance to support or sponsor Pride activities, fearing backlash from their customer base. These economic apprehensions are contributing to a broader atmosphere of resistance towards initiatives perceived as inconsistent with local values.

Furthermore, specific villages have explored alternative events that celebrate local culture without impinging on traditional beliefs. Discussions have included the promotion of art and culture festivals that resonate more deeply with the community members, aiming to foster unity while respecting individual identities.

Responses From Activists and Organisations

In light of the recent opposition from Gujarat villages, activists and advocacy groups for LGBTQ+ rights have been working to engage in dialogue with community members. Efforts have been made to address concerns and highlight the importance of inclusivity and acceptance within society. Activists assert that understanding and empathy can pave the way for progress.

There have been initiatives aimed at educational outreach, focusing on promoting awareness about LGBTQ+ issues in a manner that respects cultural sensitivities. This approach is intended to foster a safer environment for discussions surrounding sexual orientation and identity, while considering local contexts.

Several organisations are exploring ways to collaborate with local leaders to establish mutually accepted frameworks for Pride events. The objective remains to encourage diversity and inclusivity without disregarding the cultural fabric of Gujarat. Dialogue and negotiation with communities stand at the forefront of these efforts, aiming to bridge gaps between varying perspectives.

The official website of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is under scrutiny for displaying outdated promotional materials on its homepage, raising concerns about the efficacy of digital governance in the Indian government. While the Ministry plays a critical role in advancing renewable energy initiatives, the homepage currently features several banners that promote events which have already concluded. This discrepancy underlines significant issues regarding the management and accuracy of government digital platforms.

Many of the promotional events highlighted on the website are outdated. For example, a banner for the National Conference on Safety of Women at Workplace (SHe-Box), scheduled for 14 February 2026, remains on the site despite the event not taking place yet. Similarly, the banner for Pariksha Pe Charcha 2025, which was conducted earlier this year, continues to occupy promotional space. Such inconsistencies could potentially mislead stakeholders looking for current information.

Other outdated events include Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, set for 15 November 2024, which is nearly two years old, and the Prime Minister’s Awards for Yoga 2025, which has already concluded. Notably, the Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 campaign, a nation-wide cleanliness initiative, is also still displayed despite having ended some time ago. This enduring presence of expired banners can create confusion regarding the relevance of the information available to users.

Impact on User Experience and Communication

While it is vital for government websites to serve as comprehensive repositories of information, the persistent display of outdated content can hinder users’ ability to navigate current opportunities. Stakeholders such as citizens, investors, and researchers often rely on these platforms to stay informed about ongoing schemes and programmes. Consequently, an inability to accurately reflect real-time information may lead to diminished trust in the government’s digital communications.

The MNRE website does maintain updated sections, including “What’s New” and “Current Notices,” which include recent notifications from June 2026, such as updates to wind turbine guidelines and new renewable energy policy documents. This indicates that while the internal management of policy content is functioning well, the visual aspects of the homepage require more constant oversight to align with the timely updates found in other sections.

Digital governance is critical for maintaining public trust, and the upkeep of government websites is an essential part of this endeavour. Regular checks and removal of expired banners could significantly improve user experience. Additionally, showcasing relevant programmes and active schemes prominently can foster better engagement and enhance the perception of the government’s commitment to transparency in digital services.

Reinforcing Digital Presence for Future Initiatives

Given the Ministry’s significant role in driving India’s renewable energy goals, including solar power, green hydrogen, and wind energy initiatives, it is imperative that its online presence reflects the same degree of efficiency and innovation as the policies it promotes. Maintaining accurate digital resources contributes to greater public accountability and effective communication, essential elements as India progresses towards ambitious renewable energy targets.

In alignment with the Digital India initiative, the government has invested heavily in enhancing the user experience through digital platforms, advocating for accessibility and ease of doing business. The management of government websites correlates directly with these broader objectives, emphasising the need for consistent and accurate content that resonates with users’ expectations.

Ultimately, as India continues to advance in its renewable energy initiatives, ensuring that official websites are current and user-friendly must not merely be an administrative checklist but a commitment to effective governance and communication with the public.
