Hindustan Zinc has expanded its educational outreach across rural Rajasthan through its flagship Shiksha Sambal initiative, benefiting more than 47,000 students since 2018 through year-round academic support focused on Science, Mathematics and English.

The programme currently supports students across 76 schools in six districts of Rajasthan and recently concluded its ninth summer camp, which provided more than 1,600 students with hands-on learning experiences in STEM, digital technologies, innovation, arts, sports and other co-curricular activities.

Summer Camp Focuses On Experiential Learning

The latest edition of the summer camp combined academic learning with practical exposure to emerging technologies and skill-building activities aimed at improving future readiness among students.

The programme was supported by volunteers from institutions including the University of Delhi and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, along with company employees and members of local communities.

To ensure learning continues during school vacations, Shiksha Sambal organises month-long residential camps as well as non-residential camps across Ajmer, Bhilwara, Chittorgarh, Rajsamand, Salumbar and Udaipur districts.

Bhavesh Menaria, a student from Government Senior Secondary School, Gawardi in Rajsamand district, said the camp helped him understand the practical application of technology.

“Before attending the camp, STEM learning and digital tools were merely concepts I had only read about. Working on hands-on projects with mentors helped me understand how technology can solve real-world problems,” he said.

Students Highlight Benefits Of Practical Learning

The initiative seeks to equip students with academic knowledge while also developing leadership skills, digital literacy and career awareness.

Preeti Rao from Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Agucha in Bhilwara, said the camp had helped improve several important skills.

“Participating in the camp helped me improve my communication, problem-solving and digital skills. The exposure to new ideas and practical learning experiences has motivated me,” she said.

Hindustan Zinc said the programme combines classroom support with mentoring and targeted interventions to broaden educational opportunities for rural students.

Programme Records Strong Academic Outcomes

The company said the impact of the initiative is reflected in recent academic results.

According to Hindustan Zinc, students supported through Shiksha Sambal recorded a Class 10 board examination pass rate of 92.53 per cent and a Class 12 pass rate of 99.43 per cent in FY26.

The company noted that 37 schools covered under the programme achieved a 100 per cent pass result.

Hindustan Zinc said these outcomes indicate sustained improvements in academic performance and student engagement across participating schools.

Hanshika Verma from Government Senior Secondary School, Putholi in Chittorgarh, credited the programme with helping strengthen her understanding of difficult subjects.

“The additional support helped me strengthen concepts that I struggled with earlier. The guidance and study material provided through Shiksha Sambal gave me the confidence,” she said.

Former Participants Share Success Stories

Former beneficiaries of the programme have also highlighted its long-term impact on their educational journeys.

Mohit Meena, a former student of Tidi Boys Government Senior Secondary School in Zawar, Udaipur, said the programme played a significant role in helping him pursue higher education.

“Shiksha Sambal played a significant role in shaping my journey by strengthening my fundamentals. Today, due to which I am able to pursue my studies from a premier institute like IISER Pune,” he said.

Part Of Wider Community Development Efforts

Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta Group company and one of the world’s largest integrated zinc producers, said the education initiative forms part of its broader community development strategy.

The company said its social programmes focus on education, skill development, sustainable livelihoods, women’s empowerment, healthcare and environmental conservation.

Hindustan Zinc’s community initiatives currently cover more than 4,100 villages and are aimed at improving the lives of over 2.6 million people.

The company said these efforts are aligned with its 2030 sustainability goals and its commitment to promoting inclusive growth and long-term social impact across communities in Rajasthan.

The debate around Khan Sir is no longer just about one teacher. It is about what India expects from its educators and what happens when a teacher becomes bigger than the classroom.

For generations, India’s greatest nation-builders were not politicians, celebrities, or industrialists. They were teachers. The village schoolmaster, the dedicated professor, the mentor who stayed back after class to help a struggling student—these were the people who quietly shaped the India we know today.

Khan Sir became popular because millions of students saw in him what they rarely find anymore: a teacher who understood their struggles, spoke their language, and made education accessible. His success was not just his own; it reflected the hunger of India’s youth for good teachers but there is a lesson here for all educators. In the age of social media, teachers are increasingly becoming influencers. And influencers are often rewarded for controversy, attention, and viral moments rather than education. The danger is that the classroom slowly takes a back seat to public debates, politics, and personal opinions.

The recent controversy surrounding Khan Sir’s academy may also be a consequence of success itself. When an educator teaches a few hundred students, the focus remains entirely on learning. But when that educator reaches millions, every statement, classroom remark, or opinion is scrutinized, amplified, and often interpreted through political, social, or ideological lenses. Social media, intense public attention, rising expectations, and the commercialization that often accompanies rapid growth can create an environment where controversy overshadows education. What may once have remained a classroom discussion can quickly become a national debate.

The mainstream media has largely missed this deeper story. The issue is not whether Khan Sir is right or wrong. The real issue is whether India can afford to lose teachers to the distractions of fame and controversy. A teacher’s greatest strength is not influence—it is trust. Students come from different religions, backgrounds, and beliefs, but they all enter a classroom hoping to learn and build a better future.

Today, when India faces challenges ranging from unemployment to social divisions, the country needs teachers who inspire curiosity, discipline, and character. Teachers who create scientists instead of social media warriors, innovators instead of followers, and responsible citizens instead of angry crowds.

The true measure of a teacher is not the number of followers they have. It is the number of lives they transform. Long after controversies fade and headlines disappear, what remains are the students. And that is why India needs teachers like Khan Sir—teachers who can ignite young minds—but it also needs them to remain focused on their highest calling: teaching. Nations are not built first in Parliament or on television screens, they are built in classrooms.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced a significant reform aimed at improving transparency in the Civil Services Examination by introducing a Provisional Answer Key. Starting from the 2026 Preliminary examination, lakhs of candidates will be able to access the official answer keys shortly after the exam, allowing for a more immediate assessment of their performance.

Previously, candidates endured long waits—sometimes lasting several months or even nearly a year—for the release of official answer keys. This often led to a dependency on unofficial keys provided by coaching institutes for score estimation. By making the provisional key available soon after the exam, the UPSC aims to alleviate these issues.

Dr Ajay Kumar, the Chairman of UPSC, described this initiative as “a new beginning,” highlighting the Commission’s commitment to improving responsiveness and communication with candidates. The reform is intended to facilitate a more participative examination process while ensuring fairness and merit.

Significance of the Reform for Candidates

The introduction of the provisional answer key is expected to diminish confusion among candidates in the aftermath of the Preliminary examination. With direct access to the answers, candidates can evaluate their potential performance well ahead of previous timelines that relied on unofficial sources.

This timely information may also empower candidates to make better-informed decisions about their preparations for subsequent stages of the exam. This reform has been a long-standing demand from UPSC aspirants, who have consistently sought quicker access to answer keys and an official mechanism to challenge incorrect questions.

By providing a structured process for candidates to raise objections, the UPSC aims to address these concerns effectively and establish greater trust in the examination framework.

Procedure for Raising Objections to the Answer Key

To raise an objection, candidates will need to indicate the answer they believe is correct, provide a concise explanation, and upload supporting documents from three reliable sources. This structured approach is anticipated to allow candidates the necessary time to carefully review questions and challenge potential errors effectively.

Every representation submitted will be thoroughly evaluated by subject experts possessing relevant domain knowledge. This ensures that all explanations and supporting evidence are reviewed prior to the formation of the final answer key. The aim is to strengthen transparency and accountability within the examination process.

Impact on the Examination Process

The introduction of provisional answer keys represents one of the most substantial procedural changes within the UPSC in recent years. By providing candidates with a mechanism to challenge the provisional answers, the Commission hopes to foster greater confidence in the examination system.

The review process will prioritise the examination of all objections received from candidates, with the final answer key being prepared only after meticulous consideration of each challenge. This initiative is seen as a positive move towards enhancing the integrity of the examination process.

The overhaul aligns with UPSC’s ongoing efforts to address the needs and concerns of aspirants while upholding the standards of fairness and accountability. Overall, this reform aims to ensure that candidates are better equipped for their future examinations.

India’s largest skill training institution has officially opened in Vadnagar, the birthplace of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Industrial Construction Skills Training Institute (ICSTI) was established by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in collaboration with the Gujarat government. The facility aims to provide world-class training for individuals seeking careers in construction and industry-related trades.

Training Programmes and Graduates

The institute has already seen two pilot batches graduate, comprising 201 students. Among these graduates, 113 have reportedly secured employment offers related to significant infrastructure projects, including the Ahmedabad-Mumbai Bullet Train and the Ahmedabad Metro Rail project. Participants undergo hands-on training in a simulated industrial environment, allowing them to acquire practical skills relevant to the job market.

Ronak Kadiya, a commerce graduate from Vadnagar, enrolled in a formwork carpentry course and is now actively involved in the Ahmedabad-Mumbai Bullet Train project. He expressed appreciation for the extensive hands-on training, stating that it significantly enhanced his employability. The institute offers various structured programmes that last between 45 and 90 days, depending on the industry requirements.

Courses at the Vadnagar institute cover a broad spectrum of over 20 trades, including advanced construction and manufacturing techniques. The curriculum has been developed following the standards of the UK’s Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), ensuring that the training aligns with global best practices. The individuals trained at ICSTI are categorised into skill levels based on their expertise.

Facility and Support for Trainees

The Vadnagar campus spans 9.3 acres and includes extensive training setups that mimic real work environments. All trainees are required to pay no fees, and they benefit from free lodging and boarding subsidised by L&T. The campus features facilities including residential hostels, dining areas, and recreational amenities such as a gymnasium and meditation spaces.

L&T has emphasised its commitment to providing comprehensive training facilities that meet international benchmarks. Students gain experience through practical training sessions in fully equipped workshops. The institute aims not only to educate but also to provide pathways to employment through its close ties with industry projects.

Open to candidates aged 18 to 35, the institute’s entry requirements vary according to the specific trade. Basic civil trade courses are available for individuals who have completed Class 5, while certain advanced technical programmes require prior ITI certification. This inclusive approach aims to equip a wide array of young individuals with the necessary skills to thrive in competitive job markets.

Alignment with National Initiatives

The establishment of ICSTI in Vadnagar supports the Skill India Mission initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which seeks to train millions in relevant industry skills. The Gujarat government is actively working to expand skill development opportunities in the state, ensuring that youth harness beneficial industrial partnerships.

The facility also plays a crucial role in the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS), offering a structured apprenticeship of 24 months followed by nine months of additional training. Upon completion of this programme, candidates are positioned for Front Line Supervisor roles and may receive international placement opportunities.

The Vadnagar institute’s swift construction within six months is a testament to the government’s dedication to enhancing skill training infrastructure. Officially inaugurated on September 17, 2025, the institute aims to serve as a model for future educational and vocational training developments across the nation.

The recent study published by Audrey L. H. Van der Meer, a Norwegian researcher, indicates that handwriting may more effectively engage the brain compared to typing. The findings highlight the significant differences in brain activity patterns when individuals write by hand versus when they type on a keyboard. Conducted in 2024, the research examines how these two methods of input affect cognitive function and learning.

During the study, brain activity was monitored among 36 university students as they either wrote words using a digital pen or typed those same words on a keyboard. The utilisation of high-density EEG scans enabled researchers to measure the electrical activity in the brain, revealing that handwriting results in stronger interactions across various brain regions than typing.

Notably, the investigation found heightened activity in the parietal and central parts of the brain during handwriting, areas associated with processes such as attention, movement, language, memory, and visual perception. Importantly, the study highlights the increase in theta and alpha brain waves, which are closely linked to learning and memory acquisition.

Why Handwriting Engages the Brain Differently

The study elaborates that the physical act of handwriting is inherently more complex compared to typing. When an individual writes by hand, the brain orchestrates various functions including vision, finger movement, hand control, and tactile perception. This intricate process creates what researchers refer to as rich “sensorimotor” input, enabling the brain to absorb information from both movement and sensation simultaneously.

In contrast, typing primarily involves simple, repetitive motions, where each key press is mechanically similar and requires less intricate coordination. The study suggests that this lack of detailed movement may account for the diminished connectivity patterns observed in the brain during typing.

Furthermore, the slower pace of handwriting compels individuals to engage more thoughtfully with the material, thereby facilitating deeper cognitive processing. This aspect of writing may enable enhanced focus on the content being learned, potentially leading to improved retention and understanding of the information.

Implications for Learning Methods

The research underscores the advantages of handwriting, particularly in the context of learning and memory. Previous studies referenced in this investigation have demonstrated that handwriting can enhance spelling accuracy, bolster memory recall, strengthen letter recognition, and promote understanding of complex concepts. Thus, handwriting emerges as a valuable tool for effective learning.

While typing is often viewed as a quicker means of input, the study posits that this speed might detract from the cognitive engagement necessary for deep learning. It appears that, despite the convenience of typing, various educational situations might benefit more from handwritten notes or assignments.

Notably, the authors of the study do not imply that typing is inherently detrimental. They acknowledge the relevance of typing in the contemporary digital landscape, especially as it allows for swift expression of ideas. Rather, they propose that these two methods fulfill different educational needs, advocating for the continued teaching of handwriting skills in schools.

The findings also reveal that the cognitive benefits attributed to handwriting are not confined to traditional pen-and-paper writing. The use of digital pens on touchscreen devices engenders similar positive brain effects, suggesting that the essential factor is the act of manual letter formation, regardless of the medium utilised.

Job seekers often invest considerable time in preparing responses, polishing their resumes, and practicing for interviews. Despite these efforts, many find that interviews do not yield the desired outcome. In this context, the issue may not lie solely in knowledge or preparedness, but rather in how candidates communicate their thoughts. The 7-38-55 rule, introduced by psychologist Albert Mehrabian, is a foundational concept in communication that highlights the importance of non-verbal cues during interactions. This rule posits that communication comprises 7 percent words, 38 percent tone of voice, and 55 percent body language.

The Significance of the 7-38-55 Rule

The 7-38-55 rule suggests that the manner in which messages are conveyed can significantly influence their interpretation. This principle is particularly applicable in scenarios like job interviews, where the emotional nuances and interpersonal dynamics come into play. Interviewers assess not only the responses provided but also the underlying confidence and engagement demonstrated by candidates, making the incidental aspects of communication pivotal.

Challenges of Relying Solely on Words

Many candidates tend to focus entirely on crafting verbal responses, often rehearsing answers to commonly anticipated questions. However, this singular focus can lead to pitfalls such as delivering answers in a robotic or rushed manner, which can result in a disconnect with the interviewer. Although well-crafted words can convey information, they do not alone ensure effective communication; perceptions surrounding delivery can overshadow the content of the statements made.

The Role of Tone in Communication

The tone in which responses are delivered offers invaluable insight into a candidate’s feelings about their own statements. A confident answer articulated in a monotone or uncertain voice may evoke skepticism, while a straightforward response paired with an enthusiastic tone can be much more persuasive. Essential elements to consider include clarity of voice, speaking pace, use of pauses, and overall enthusiasm. A steady and composed tone signals both clarity and confidence, strengthening the impression made on interviewers.

Impact of Body Language on First Impressions

Body language is often the first aspect of communication that an interviewer notices. Key indicators such as eye contact, posture, and facial expressions can shape initial perceptions even before a candidate begins to articulate their answers. Negative body language such as slouching or lack of eye contact may lead to an unfavorable assessment, regardless of how strong a candidate’s verbal responses might be.

Understanding Interview Dynamics

Many candidates leave interviews believing they have answered all questions correctly. However, interviews should be viewed as conversations rather than examinations. Interviewers inherently assess trust, confidence, clarity of communication, and overall fit within the team. The essence of the 7-38-55 rule elucidates why technically correct responses do not guarantee a successful interview.

Leveraging the 7-38-55 Rule for Interview Success

To enhance performance during interviews, candidates are encouraged to focus on both their answers and their delivery. Practical strategies include practicing aloud rather than merely thinking about responses, recording oneself to evaluate tone and body language, maintaining steady eye contact, and adopting an open posture. Slowing down speech and incorporating well-placed pauses can help project a natural and confident demeanor.

Transforming Interview Preparation

Understanding the implications of the 7-38-55 rule shifts the focus from merely seeking correct answers to the overall presence and engagement a candidate brings to the interview room. Even if two candidates articulate the same points, the individual who appears more confident and communicates with clarity will typically create a more favorable impression. Recognizing the importance of both verbal and non-verbal communication can bridge gaps that might explain unsuccessful interview experiences.

The Central Board of Secondary Education is implementing a revised curriculum on Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence for students from Classes 3 to 8, commencing in the 2026-27 academic year. The initiative was unveiled by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan during an event at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. This initiative is designed to make education more relevant to the technological advancements shaping society.

Objective of the Curriculum

The new educational framework aims to provide students with structured learning experiences related to emerging technologies. It includes detailed guidelines for teachers and effective assessment tools for students, ensuring a comprehensive understanding from the outset. Minister Pradhan highlighted that the curriculum embodies the principles of “AI for Education, AI in Education,” emphasizing its role in fostering critical thinking, innovation, and problem-solving skills among students.

Focus on Early Exposure to AI

The curriculum emphasizes the development of skills such as logical reasoning, problem-solving abilities, and an understanding of artificial intelligence’s applications in day-to-day life. The goal is to cultivate students who are prepared for engaging responsibly with technology, rather than being mere consumers. Additionally, it seeks to promote digital literacy, ethical decision-making, and innovative thinking in young learners.

Alignment with National Education Policy

This new educational program is aligned with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023. The learning objectives and outcomes have been developed in accordance with these frameworks. The phased introduction of Computational Thinking provides a foundational understanding, allowing students to progress to more complex AI concepts as they advance through their studies.

Preparation for an Uncertain Technological Future

Jayant Chaudhary remarked on the necessity for educational frameworks that prepare students for unpredictable technological changes. Emphasizing that AI is significantly altering knowledge creation and decision-making processes, he stated that it is crucial for students to evolve from passive users of technology to proactive creators and responsible leaders. Early engagement in computational thinking will equip children with the confidence to adapt to learning in various contexts.

Innovative Teaching and Assessment Methods

The instructional approach for this curriculum will be centered around activity-based and experiential learning methods. Students will engage with material through games, puzzles, and practical exercises. Teachers will assist in simplifying complex problems and facilitating understanding of concepts through visual aids such as charts and diagrams. Assessments will prioritize practical evaluations over rote memorization, employing written tests, collaborative activities, and observation journals to monitor student progress.

Integration Across Subjects

The new curriculum is expected to blend learning across mathematics, science, and humanities while strengthening foundational skills in digital literacy and technology use. By instilling these competencies, the curriculum aims to develop a generation of learners who can navigate and innovate in an increasingly digital world.
