World Hearing Day

Caution against earphone & headphone use

Hearing Loss

World Hearing Day 2025 Theme

A fifth-century wooden stitched ship was recreated using the ancient stitching technique and structured using coconut fibre stitching, traditional wooden joinery, coir rope and natural reasons. The ship is powered by cotton sails and was launched at Goa’s Divar Island this week. The ship has been put in the water for the first time. According to officials, it has been depicted on a painting inside the Ajanta caves in Maharashtra.
The vessel will have a 15-member crew of the Indian Navy and is expected to set sail on a historic voyage to Oman, retracing an ancient trading route between India and the Gulf region.

Reviving Ancient Maritime Heritage

This project is part of an initiative to revive India’s rich maritime heritage. It is being curated by a tripartite agreement between the Indian Navy, the Ministry of Culture and a Goa-based ship building company, Hodi innovations (OPC) Private Limited.
The ancient technique of stage ships features a main mast, mizzen mast and bowsprit mast with navigation achieved using steering oars. The vessel is bound together with coir rope and fibre. CSR Collaboration To Grow Financial Literacy Program with SGD 5.1 Million in Funding

New Delhi, India: DBS Foundation, in partnership with Haqdarshak Empowerment Solutions Pvt. Ltd. (HESPL), has announced a new program designed to help advance financial inclusion, with a focus on rural India. The program is part of DBS Bank’s larger commitment, announced in 2023, to allocate SGD 1 billion over the next decade to improve the lives and livelihoods of low-income and underprivileged individuals. The DBS Foundation will provide SGD 5.1 million to fund the program, which has targeted impacting 500,000 beneficiaries in totality across the country.
India’s rural population can often face challenges such as lack of information about and access to financial services and social welfare entitlements. The DBS-funded program addresses these critical gaps by providing resources to help this demographic understand financial concepts and products as well as the tools and assistance on how to access social welfare schemes, supported by Haqdarshak’s team of agents. The program implementation will focus on rural regions in the states of Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha.
As part of the program, dedicated field teams, including Haqdarshak’s female agents, will be deployed to conduct both digital and financial literacy training sessions along with entitlement screening sessions. The program will prioritise enrolling eligible beneficiaries, particularly women, the elderly, and nano entrepreneurs like street vendors and tradesmen, into appropriate social welfare schemes. Additionally, to bolster their protection against financial fraud, participants will receive anti-scam awareness trainings. Enhancing the effectiveness of these services, the Haqdarshak Yojana Card, a QR coded card will facilitate easy access to the beneficiary’s social entitlement profiles online with periodic information updates on scheme eligibility. DBS employees will actively participate in the program delivery under its staff volunteer movement ‘People of Purpose’ to increase content awareness as well as conduct community sessions along with the Haqdarshak team.
Azmat Habibulla, Managing Director and Head – Group Strategic Marketing and Communications, DBS Bank India, said, “Since inception more than a decade ago, the DBS Foundation has been focused on uplifting lives and livelihoods and, it is especially meaningful to be able to launch a new intervention with Haqdarshak, who we have nurtured since 2018 as a Business For Impact. Having completed three decades in India, DBS Bank is more committed than ever to stay true to its purpose-driven vision and catalyse change. Together with Haqdarshak, we will take forward this shared mission to go beyond banking and empower communities through financial inclusion. By tackling real knowledge gaps with targeted solutions, we can enable pathways out of poverty and create lasting impact to help build a better world for generations to come.”
Over the years, Haqdarshak has been engaging with and been supported by the DBS Foundation (DBSF), including via the 2018 DBSF Business for Impact Grant and the 2020 DBSF Business Transformation Improvement Grant. In 2023 Haqdarshak became a DBSF program partner in India to foster digital and financial literacy among citizens from vulnerable communities across Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana. Through this initiative over 10,000 digital and financial literacy sessions were successfully conducted for over 2 lakh beneficiaries, along with entitlement screening and facilitation support to over 4 lakh individuals so they could avail relevant welfare schemes. Notably, around 90% of the participants trained in digital and financial literacy were women.
Commenting on the announcement, Aniket Doegar, Co-Founder and CEO of Haqdarshak, said “As we navigate an increasingly fast-paced world, it is important to support those who may need more assistance and ensure that no one is left behind. Our new program is aimed at fostering long-term economic resilience and self-sufficiency among underprivileged communities by giving them the skills and confidence to access the benefits of the formal system. The DBS Foundation has been instrumental as a trusted partner in our journey and their consistent support over the years has enabled us to scale our reach and impact more lives positively. We look forward to partnering once again on a very purposeful initiative, bringing about real impact by sparking collective action.”
This program is part of the DBS Foundation’s broader objective to support vulnerable communities and enable them to gain financial resilience across Asia, with a specific focus on the underprivileged and ageing members of society. By championing Businesses For Impact, DBS advocates for enterprises with a dual bottom line of profit and purpose, nurturing those that align with its mission and integrating them into DBS’s culture and operations.

How Adani Foundation is Empowering Women through Mushroom Cultivation in Jharkhand’s Godda

How Adani Foundation is Empowering Women through Mushroom Cultivation in Jharkhand’s Godda
Adani group through its CSR arm Adani Foundation has been empowering women farmers through mushroom cultivation in Jharkhand’s Godda. These women, most of whom were living below the poverty level in remote rural areas of Jharkhand, are now self-sufficient, running their households through their income and beaming with confidence. Adani Foundation through its training programmes has been encouraging these women to take up mushroom cultivation, thereby bringing about a positive change in their lives.

The story of Vinita Jha

For Vinita Jha, taking care of her family of eight had been a challenge. Vinita’s husband, a farmer, works for more than nine hours every day and she herself used to work as a sewing trainer, while running the household. “We have been struggling for months, and finally, I decided to take up another job to add to my family’s income,” she said. “That’s when one of my neighbours told me about mushroom cultivation. I had no idea about it. So, I thought of giving it a try.”
Three months ago, Vinita attended a training programme where a team from Adani Foundation encouraged women to take up mushroom cultivation. Vinita has been growing mushrooms since then. “I have been earning Rs 5,000 every month,” said the 48-year-old resident of Dumaria village.
With an aim to augment the income of women living in the villages of Jharkhand’s Godda district and making them self-reliant, Adani Foundation has been running a programme to spread awareness about mushroom cultivation.

Sabnam Kumari’s journey

“The training session was held for two days. We were told about various aspects of mushroom cultivation, including the financial aspect. We were taught how to grow mushrooms, pack and sell them. There are mainly three kinds of mushrooms — milky, oyster and button mushrooms. The cultivation of oyster mushrooms is easy and economical. It is tasty and has a lot of medicinal properties. The best thing is that these mushrooms can be sold dry,” said Sabnam Kumari, from Baksara.
“I am a teacher at a private school here. After attending the training session, I started growing mushrooms to support my family of five,” she added.

What inspired Lalita Devi

For Lalita Devi, a homemaker, mushroom cultivation has been an important step towards self-reliance. “I have two children and my days would revolve around them. Now, I go to the market almost every day and sell mushrooms. This has given me a new direction in life,” said the Baksara resident.
A bag of mushrooms weighing about 2 kgs costs Rs 50. By selling it, one can earn a profit of Rs 200-300 a day, one of the trainers said. “This means an average income of up to Rs 6,000 a month,” he added.
According to Adani Foundation officials, these training sessions have been held in villages across Godda district. The programme targets to impact about 500 women and connect them to local markets for selling mushrooms.

How Sindhu Devi’s life changed

Sindhu Devi from Dumaria said she works as a tailor, but her family’s income is not sufficient. “I have three sons and one daughter. I attended the training session organised by the Adani Foundation and thought of trying my luck with mushroom cultivation. It was a good decision,” she said adding that her income has increased by about Rs 5,000 per month.

Pushpa Devi’s story

Pushpa Devi, another Dumaria resident, said she enjoyed the training session. “It was very interesting. I got to meet many people from my village. It was a great experience,” said the mother of six.
In the past few months, more than 300 women from several villages close to the Adani power plant in Godda have been trained and most of them have been earning up to Rs 6,000 a month. “I visit the local market three days a week. On most days, I manage to sell my entire stock. Dry mushrooms have a lot of takers because they are easy to transport and store. I am glad I attended the training session organised by Adani Foundation,” Pushpa said.
