Pakistan’s external debt has significantly increased over the past decade, reaching $135.1 billion in 2025, up from $68.67 billion in 2015, as reported by the World Bank. This substantial rise highlights the country’s escalating reliance on foreign borrowing to fulfil its financial requirements. The overall debt stock comprises various components, including $107.07 billion in public and publicly guaranteed loans, $17.58 billion in private non-guaranteed debt, and $10.45 billion in short-term borrowing.

The public debt segment reveals that multilateral institutions represent the largest share, amounting to $56.83 billion. Additionally, Pakistan’s obligations include $42.43 billion owed to bilateral lenders and $7.8 billion to private creditors. This growing debt profile indicates a concerning trend in the nation’s financial management and sustainability.

China’s Role as a Major Creditor

Among its creditors, China stands out as Pakistan’s largest individual lender, with outstanding loans totalling $22.4 billion. This figure underscores the deepening financial ties between the two nations, particularly in the context of China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Following China, the World Bank is the second-largest creditor, with an outstanding amount of $19.2 billion. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) follows closely, with Pakistan’s debt to the institution recorded at $16.83 billion.

The reliance on Chinese loans raises questions about the long-term implications for Pakistan’s economic independence. The terms of these loans, including interest rates and repayment schedules, are critical factors that will influence the country’s financial stability in the years to come. As the debt burden grows, the need for effective management and strategic planning becomes increasingly urgent.

The report also highlights the differences in borrowing costs between various types of creditors. Loans from official sources typically have an average maturity of 16 years, a grace period of four years, and an interest rate of 3.6%. In contrast, private credit carries a much higher average interest rate of 8.6%, with a repayment period of three years and a grace period of just one year. This disparity in borrowing costs further complicates Pakistan’s financial landscape.

Regional Debt Trends and Recent Developments

In the broader context of the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan region, there have been improvements in debt-service and interest ratios. However, the external debt-to-gross national income (GNI) ratio for the region has risen from 26.7 per cent to 29.4 per cent in 2025. This increase marks the most significant annual rise recorded by any region, indicating a persistent accumulation of external debt.

Pakistan has recently benefited from some financial relief through new financing and loan extensions. Notably, China has extended the maturity of $2 billion in loans, providing some breathing space for the country. Additionally, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has disbursed $2.3 billion under its Extended Fund Facility and Resilience and Sustainability Facility programmes. These measures are aimed at bolstering Pakistan’s long-term economic stability.

The interplay of these financial dynamics will be crucial for Pakistan as it navigates its economic challenges. The reliance on external debt, particularly from China, necessitates careful consideration of future borrowing strategies and economic policies to ensure sustainable growth and financial independence.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has reiterated support for Rahul Gandhi’s proposal to debate the government’s allegations in Parliament. He emphasised that Parliament has not been prorogued and should reconvene for this purpose. Tharoor stated, “If Parliament reconvenes, I believe Rahul Gandhi’s offer to debate still stands,” highlighting the importance of addressing these issues within the legislative framework.

His comments come amid ongoing tensions between the Congress party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over various allegations, including those concerning the integrity of the electoral process. Tharoor’s call for a debate reflects a broader demand for accountability from the government regarding its actions and policies.

Criticism of the Election Commission’s Procedures

Tharoor has expressed strong criticism of the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding its management of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He alleged that there have been significant procedural irregularities that have raised concerns among the Opposition. According to Tharoor, the Supreme Court hearings have corroborated these concerns, indicating that the ECI’s actions may not align with established electoral laws.

Particularly, Tharoor condemned the ECI’s decision to separate the SIR declaration from Form 6, labelling it one of the Commission’s “most outrageous mistakes.” He accused the ECI, led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, of making unauthorised alterations to electoral procedures, which have reportedly led to the disenfranchisement of eligible voters. He stated, “The ordinary public has not fully understood all of these examples of frankly bureaucratic and administrative malfeasance.”

Tharoor further elaborated on the implications of these changes, noting that the bulk filing of Form 7 objections has resulted in many individuals being unjustly denied their voting rights based on mere suspicion. He pointed out that such actions have been contested by other Election Commissioners, indicating a division within the Commission itself regarding its practices.

Opposition’s Demands and Election Commission’s Response

The Opposition, led by Tharoor, has not only called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar but has also demanded a reversal of the decisions made during the SIR process that allegedly impacted eligible voters. Tharoor welcomed the ECI’s recent move to retract some of its decisions but insisted that further action is necessary to rectify the consequences of earlier missteps.

He stated, “We wanted not just Mr. Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation; we wanted very much that the electoral process under the SIR should be reversed.” Tharoor highlighted the significant number of votes—approximately 113 million—that have been removed from the electoral register, underscoring the gravity of the situation. He asserted that the actions taken by the ECI were fundamentally flawed and that ongoing Supreme Court hearings are validating the Opposition’s claims.

The political landscape remains contentious, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah challenging Rahul Gandhi to present his allegations in Parliament rather than in public forums. Shah’s remarks came after Gandhi’s assertion that he could prove the Prime Minister’s disloyalty within five minutes. This ongoing debate reflects the heightened political tensions as both parties prepare for further confrontations in the legislative arena.

Seven family members were reportedly murdered in Srirampura, Bengaluru, with authorities suspecting that the motive behind the killings was a domestic dispute. The accused, identified as Indushekar, allegedly took the lives of his wife and six of her relatives. The victims include his wife, Sunita, his mother-in-law, Roopavati, and two brothers-in-law, Shivakumar and Shankar, along with their spouses, both named Divya, and Shankar’s son, Puneeth.

Details of the Crime

According to police reports, the body of Puneeth has been recovered, while the other six victims are believed to have been disposed of at various locations throughout Bengaluru and in nearby areas, including Chikkaballapur. Preliminary investigations suggest that Indushekar used a grinding stone to bludgeon the victims to death inside their residence before discarding their remains in different sites. The nature of the crime indicates a brutal act stemming from ongoing domestic tensions.

Police have indicated that frequent arguments and disputes between Indushekar and Sunita may have escalated to this tragic outcome. It has been reported that Sunita had previously approached law enforcement to file a missing persons complaint after her family members vanished. This complaint was filed prior to her own alleged murder, raising concerns about the severity of the domestic issues within the household.

As investigations continue, authorities are working diligently to uncover further details regarding the timeline of events leading up to the murders. The recovery of the remaining bodies is anticipated, and police are conducting searches in various locations where the victims may have been disposed of. The community is in shock, and further updates are expected as the investigation unfolds.

Community Reaction and Ongoing Investigation

The brutal nature of the crime has sent shockwaves through the local community, prompting discussions about domestic violence and its implications. Residents in Srirampura have expressed their disbelief, with many calling for increased awareness and preventive measures to address domestic disputes before they escalate into violence. The police have assured the public that they are taking the matter seriously and will pursue all leads to ensure justice is served.

Law enforcement agencies are also urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward. They are exploring all possible angles and are committed to ensuring that the investigation is thorough. As the situation develops, the focus remains on gathering evidence and providing support to the families affected by this tragedy.

Authorities are also investigating the possibility of prior incidents of domestic violence within the household. This aspect of the case is crucial, as it may provide insights into the dynamics that led to the tragic events. The police have stated that they are working closely with community leaders to address the underlying issues that may contribute to such violent incidents.

Oil prices have rebounded, with Brent crude nearing the $100-per-barrel threshold following a significant decline earlier in the week. As of the latest reports, Brent was trading at $99.59 per barrel, reflecting an increase of $1.30 or 1.32%. Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also saw gains, priced at $91.34, up by $0.82 or 0.91%. This recovery follows a sharp downturn in prices that had seen both benchmarks suffer steep losses.

On Wednesday, both Brent and WTI experienced their most significant declines in recent sessions, with Brent dropping $8.98, or 8.7%, to close at $94.62 per barrel, while WTI fell by $7.97, or 8.3%, settling at $88.12. These figures marked the lowest closing prices since August 31. The selling pressure persisted into Thursday, with Brent falling below $95 and WTI dipping under $90.

On Thursday, Brent futures recorded a further decline of 50 cents, or 0.53%, bringing the price down to $94.12 per barrel. WTI lost 61 cents, or 0.69%, to settle at $87.51. The fluctuations in oil prices have been attributed to various factors, including geopolitical tensions and market adjustments.

Impact of Middle East Conflicts on Global Refining

The recent volatility in crude oil prices is closely linked to ongoing disruptions in supply routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz. The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East has significantly affected refinery operations, especially in nations reliant on crude shipments passing through this critical passage.

During the second quarter of 2026, global refinery inputs fell by 4.8 million barrels per day (b/d), or 6%, compared to the previous quarter, according to data from energy intelligence firm Kpler. Although there was a slight recovery of 1.8 million b/d in the third quarter, the figures remained below previous levels as refiners adapted to shifting trade patterns and alternative supply routes. This situation was particularly evident in Asia, where China reported a decrease in refinery inputs of 2.1 million b/d in the second quarter, followed by an additional drop of 0.8 million b/d in the third quarter.

Other Asian countries, including India, South Korea, and Japan, collectively saw a reduction of more than 1 million b/d in the second quarter. However, their combined inputs improved by 0.8 million b/d in the subsequent quarter. The Middle East also faced a slowdown in refining activities due to shipping restrictions, with Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates each experiencing a decline of 0.7 million b/d.

Challenges in Russian Oil Infrastructure

In Russia, refinery operations have encountered additional challenges due to increased attacks on oil infrastructure amid the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. This has led to a decline of 0.6 million b/d in Russian crude oil inputs during the second quarter, followed by another drop of 0.8 million b/d in the third quarter. The reduced refining capacity in Russia, combined with disruptions in Asia and the Middle East, has contributed to heightened pressure on global diesel supplies.

As a result, diesel prices reached their highest nominal levels on record in September, according to the EIA. In contrast, the United States experienced a different trend, with refinery inputs increasing by 0.5 million b/d in both the second and third quarters, as the country ramped up refined product exports to address shortages in other markets.

Despite these improvements in refining activity, global throughput has not returned to last year’s levels, remaining approximately 5% lower than in the corresponding period of 2025, even as crude oil flows gradually improved.

A criminal defamation complaint has been lodged against religious preacher Dhirendra Shastri in an Agra court concerning his comments about Lord Krishna. The complaint was filed by Advocate Ajay Pratap Singh on Thursday, who alleged that Shastri made derogatory remarks during a religious discourse. These comments reportedly hurt the sentiments and social standing of Lord Krishna’s descendants.

The remarks were allegedly made during a Ram Katha event held in Karera, located in the Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh. During this event, Shastri is said to have compared the physical postures of Lord Ram and Lord Krishna. According to the complaint, Shastri stated, “Those who follow Krishna might feel bad, but Krishna is very crooked. Even when he stands, he is bent at three places,” as reported by PTI.

The complainant, Singh, argued that Lord Krishna was born in human form during the Dwapar Yuga and that his descendants continue to inhabit India today. He referenced historical communities such as the Jadoons, Jadejas, and Bhatis to substantiate his claim of descent from Lord Krishna through his maternal lineage.

Legal Proceedings Initiated

The complaint was brought before Civil Judge Kanchan Kumar, who conducted a preliminary hearing. Following this, the court officially registered the case and scheduled the next hearing for December 14. This legal action has attracted attention, particularly as it follows recent comments made by political figures regarding controversial preachers.

On the day prior to the filing of the complaint, Akhilesh Yadav, the president of the Samajwadi Party, urged the organisers and sponsors of religious programmes to distance themselves from preachers who generate controversy. His remarks have added a political dimension to the ongoing situation surrounding Shastri’s comments.

In response to Yadav’s statements, Pankaj Chaudhary, the BJP state president, quoted a couplet from the Ramcharitmanas. He implied that those who have questionable conduct should not be in a position to preach to others, thereby suggesting that the matter extends beyond the initial comments made by Shastri.

Reactions and Implications

The filing of the complaint has sparked discussions within both religious and political circles. The allegations against Shastri have raised questions about the responsibilities of public figures, particularly those involved in religious discourse. The case is likely to draw further scrutiny as it progresses through the legal system.

As the next hearing approaches, it remains to be seen how the court will address the issues raised in the complaint. The implications of this case could extend beyond Shastri, potentially influencing the broader landscape of religious commentary in India.

The situation has also highlighted the sensitivities surrounding religious sentiments in the country. With a diverse population holding various beliefs, the balance between freedom of speech and respect for religious figures is a topic of ongoing debate.

Elon Musk has removed social media posts that encouraged voters to support Republican candidates in the recent US midterm elections. This decision came after the Democratic Party made substantial gains, securing control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Among the deleted content was a pinned message from October 29, urging voters to elect Republican senators, as well as an Election Day appeal that stated, “Vote red today!”

The removal of these posts occurred early on Wednesday, coinciding with the announcement of Democrat James Talarico’s victory in the Texas Senate race. The Associated Press confirmed Talarico’s win shortly after 11 pm EST on Tuesday, marking the defeat of Republican Ken Paxton, who had received considerable financial support from Musk.

Musk’s chatbot Grok confirmed the deletion of the posts after an inquiry from a user on X, stating that the posts were removed following “major Republican losses.” This Election Day appeal was one of Musk’s few direct endorsements for Republican candidates during this election cycle.

Musk’s Responses to Election Results

On Wednesday morning, Musk became more active on X, sharing various posts that analysed the election results and included sarcastic comments regarding the Republican defeats. One of his posts remarked, “Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time 🤷‍♂️.” He also made a comment about the appeal of data centres in space, suggesting a shift in focus following the election outcomes.

In addition to his remarks, Musk responded to a post that claimed voters aligned with Republican policies but still chose to vote for Democrats. He commented on the failure of a California ballot measure that sought to require government-issued photo identification for in-person voting, highlighting the complexities of voter sentiment.

Following his commentary on the elections, Musk returned to discussing his business ventures, including Starlink and Grok, as reported by various news outlets.

Financial Contributions to Republican Causes

Musk has been a prominent financial supporter of Republican candidates and political initiatives during the midterm election cycle. Reports indicate that he contributed at least Rs 3,790 crore ($458 million) to Republican-aligned causes, making him one of the largest individual donors in contemporary US political history.

Federal Election Commission filings reveal that approximately Rs 1,800 crore ($216 million) was directed to his super PAC, America PAC, which funded voter turnout efforts, grassroots campaigning, and targeted advertising. Musk’s financial contributions increased in the latter half of the election cycle as he aimed to assist Republicans in maintaining their congressional majority.

Data indicates that Musk’s overall spending, including contributions to super PACs and individual donations, reached around Rs 3,950 crore ($474 million). An estimated Rs 1,860 crore ($224 million) was spent specifically in Texas, where 106 candidates across the House and Senate received his backing. As of Wednesday afternoon, 19 of those candidates had won, while 47 had lost, with 40 races still uncalled.

Impact on Musk’s Wealth and Company Values

The election results coincided with a decline in the market value of Musk’s companies and a reduction in his personal wealth. Forbes reported that Musk’s net worth fell to Rs 7,250 crore ($878 billion) on Wednesday, a decrease of Rs 1,950 crore ($23.7 billion) as markets reacted to the Democratic victories.

Shares of Tesla and SpaceX experienced declines, reflecting concerns about potential regulatory challenges in data centre construction. Tesla shares dropped by 3.3%, while SpaceX shares fell by 3.8%, resulting in a loss of over Rs 1,000 crore ($120 billion) in market value, according to Bloomberg.

This downturn followed an expensive election cycle for Musk, who had previously supported candidates aligned with Donald Trump in the 2024 election. Reports indicate that Musk had spent around Rs 2,400 crore ($291 million) during that earlier cycle.

Cristiano Ronaldo has officially announced his retirement from the Portugal national team, marking the conclusion of a remarkable chapter in football history. The announcement was made via a social media post on Thursday, where he reflected on his illustrious career spanning over two decades. Ronaldo expressed his gratitude for the privilege of wearing the national team’s number 7 shirt, stating, “Today, the time has come to pass it on to the future.”

Ronaldo’s journey with the national team began in August 2003 and has been filled with numerous highlights, including key victories and memorable performances. He has made a record 234 appearances and scored 146 goals for Portugal, making him the highest-scoring player in international men’s football. His longevity is evident, with 94 of those goals coming after he turned 30.

Significant Achievements and Milestones

Throughout his career, Ronaldo has achieved significant milestones, including winning the 2016 UEFA European Championship and two UEFA Nations League titles. His last World Cup appearance was in 2026, where he played against Spain, marking his 27th match across six tournaments. This achievement made him the oldest player to participate in a World Cup knockout match at the age of 41.

Ronaldo’s contributions to the national team have been pivotal, particularly in major tournaments. He is remembered for his stunning hat-trick against Spain in the 2018 World Cup and crucial goals during qualifiers, including a memorable performance against Sweden in 2013. His presence has transformed Portugal into a formidable footballing nation, leading them to their first major tournament victory.

Despite his numerous successes, Ronaldo’s career has not been without its challenges. He faced moments of disappointment, such as the Euro 2016 final, where he had to leave the pitch early due to injury, yet his team went on to secure victory. These experiences highlight the highs and lows of a career that has captivated fans worldwide.

Legacy and Future Endeavours

Ronaldo’s legacy is firmly established, with accolades continuing to pour in as he transitions from international football. His iconic ‘Siu’ celebration has become a global phenomenon, inspiring young athletes everywhere. As he steps away from the national team, he remains active in club football, currently playing for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. He is on the brink of reaching a significant milestone, aiming for his 1,000th career goal, having already scored 985.

As Ronaldo bids farewell to international football, he leaves behind a legacy that will endure for generations. His heartfelt farewell message encapsulated his thoughts: “Goals fade. Trophies end up in museums. Records are eventually broken. But there is something that time can never erase: the place we hold in people’s hearts.” This sentiment reflects the profound impact he has had on fans and the sport itself.

As he continues his club career, the football community will undoubtedly keep a close eye on his performances. Ronaldo’s journey has not only been about personal achievements but also about inspiring millions around the world. His contributions to football will be remembered long after he has hung up his boots, ensuring that his influence remains felt in the sport for years to come.

Jyot Singh has achieved a significant milestone in the United States by becoming the first Sikh elected to the Georgia House of Representatives. His victory in the recent midterm elections marks a notable moment for both the Sikh and Indian-American communities. Singh, representing the Democratic Party, won the election for Georgia House District 97 during the polls held on November 3. This achievement positions him as a trailblazer in the state’s General Assembly.

Election Details and Results

In the election, Singh garnered 13,820 votes, which accounted for 68 per cent of the total votes cast. His Republican opponent, Yassin Moghazy, received 6,509 votes, representing 32 per cent of the total. Following his victory, Singh expressed pride in the historic nature of his election, stating, “We made history for our community here in House District 97,” in a video shared on X. His win not only highlights his personal achievement but also reflects the growing diversity within Georgia’s political landscape.

Singh’s campaign focused on the unique challenges faced by residents of Gwinnett County, where he was raised. In his vision statement prior to the election, he emphasised the importance of addressing issues related to healthcare and housing. He articulated a vision of diversity as a strength, stating, “Growing up in Norcross, Georgia, I learned that our diversity isn’t just a number—it’s our strength.” This perspective underscores his commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for all constituents.

Singh’s understanding of the community’s needs was further illustrated when he remarked on the vulnerabilities that families face. He noted that healthcare is often viewed as a luxury and that rising housing costs can jeopardise the stability of families. His commitment to ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to thrive was a central theme in his campaign. He stated, “I’ve seen the gaps where families fall through—where healthcare is a luxury and housing costs threaten the very roots people have worked so hard to plant.”

Background and Professional Experience

Prior to his election, Jyot Singh successfully defeated Jacques Laurent in the Democratic primary for Georgia House District 97 in May. Singh’s academic background includes a high school diploma from the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology, as well as a bachelor’s degree from Yale University. His educational achievements have equipped him with the skills necessary for his role in public service.

In addition to his academic credentials, Singh has professional experience as a consultant and small business owner. This diverse background has provided him with insights into the challenges faced by both individuals and businesses within his district. His approach to governance is informed by his understanding of the local economy and the needs of his constituents.

Singh’s election to the Georgia House of Representatives is not only a personal triumph but also a reflection of the increasing representation of diverse communities in American politics. His commitment to addressing the pressing issues of healthcare and housing, combined with his dedication to inclusivity, positions him as a significant figure in the state’s legislative landscape. As he embarks on this new chapter, Singh aims to build on the foundations of excellence established in his community while ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to flourish.

Recent findings indicate that palaeontologists have uncovered traces of red blood cells and collagen in dinosaur fossils, challenging previous notions about fossil preservation. This remarkable discovery was made by a team of researchers from Curtin University, who examined a dinosaur fossil estimated to be 115 million years old. Their study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, highlights the potential for biological material to survive in fossils long after an organism’s death.

Details of the Discovery

The research was spearheaded by Kliti Grice and an international team, focusing on the limb bones of Aratasaurus museunacionali, a theropod dinosaur that roamed what is now northeastern Brazil. The fossilised bones, unearthed from a Brazilian mine in 2008, contained unexpected structures within their vascular canals. These canals, which once housed blood vessels, revealed tiny, oval-shaped formations that resembled red blood cells.

To confirm their findings, the researchers employed advanced techniques including high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. This analysis led to the identification of heme B and its altered forms within the bone extracts. Heme is an iron-containing molecule integral to haemoglobin, the protein responsible for oxygen transport in red blood cells. Further investigations using Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy uncovered chemical signatures linked to heme, along with elements such as iron, nitrogen, and carbon.

The team also discovered traces of collagen, a vital structural protein. These findings suggest that biological materials derived from blood and collagen have survived in the fossil for approximately 115 million years, raising questions about the mechanisms behind such preservation.

Factors Contributing to Preservation

Typically, blood cells and soft tissues begin to decompose shortly after an organism dies, due to the action of microorganisms, oxygen, and natural chemical processes. This makes the preservation of such delicate structures over millions of years exceedingly rare. Researchers propose that the conditions surrounding the dinosaur’s burial played a crucial role in the preservation of these biological materials.

The study suggests that the dinosaur may have been rapidly buried in a low-oxygen environment enriched with microbial mats, which are thin layers of microorganisms that thrive in shallow-water settings. These conditions could have slowed the decomposition process, creating an environment conducive to the preservation of fragile biological structures.

Additionally, the researchers found that the cell-like structures were mineralised with hausmannite, a manganese oxide mineral. This mineral may have acted as a protective barrier, stabilising the microscopic structures and their chemical components before they could fully decompose. The combination of favourable burial conditions and early mineralisation appears to have been key to the survival of these biological traces.

Implications for Palaeontology

This discovery not only sheds light on the preservation of biological materials but also transforms our understanding of dinosaur biology. Traditionally, knowledge about these ancient creatures has been derived primarily from bones, teeth, and fossilised footprints. The identification of blood-derived molecules and collagen-related materials offers a new perspective, potentially revealing details that skeletal remains alone cannot provide.

Moreover, this finding raises the possibility that fossils may contain more biological information than previously thought. As researchers continue to explore these discoveries, they may uncover further insights into the lives and environments of dinosaurs, enriching our understanding of these ancient beings.

The discovery of three bodies belonging to fishermen missing after Cyclone Murasu has sparked significant anger and grief in Kasimedu, a locality in Chennai. Families of the deceased are questioning the government’s response and demanding accountability for the apparent failure to rescue the fishermen in a timely manner. The fishermen were part of a nine-member crew from Kasimedu fishing harbour, who became stranded at sea due to a mechanical failure in their trawler.

As Cyclone Murasu struck, the vessel was left vulnerable in rough seas. The bodies of the three fishermen were located in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh, raising concerns about the fate of the remaining six crew members. Families have expressed their anguish, alleging that they had informed authorities about the missing fishermen, but no effective measures were taken to locate them promptly.

In the wake of this tragedy, Chief Minister Vijay expressed condolences and announced a compensation package of Rs 7 lakh for each bereaved family. However, the announcement has done little to alleviate the anger felt by the families, who are demanding more substantial answers regarding the lack of timely rescue efforts and safety measures for fishermen.

Questions Over Safety Protocols

The situation has raised critical questions about the safety protocols in place for fishermen during adverse weather conditions. Reports indicate that the fishing vessel remained at sea despite weather advisories urging fishermen to return to shore. Families are now questioning why the vessel was allowed to venture out given the cyclone warnings. They are also concerned about the absence of effective communication mechanisms that could have ensured the fishermen’s safe return.

Finance Minister Marie Wilson, who visited the affected families before heading to Andhra Pradesh, acknowledged the gaps in the safety protocols. He revealed that the fishermen lacked essential safety gear, insurance, and other mandatory documents. Wilson assured families that efforts would be made to improve the system to prevent such incidents in the future.

Despite his visit, the anger among the families persists. One family member highlighted the absence of the Fisheries Minister during the critical initial days of the crisis, stating that they had waited for three days for a visit from the minister. The emotional distress has led to extreme statements from family members, with one woman declaring that they would resort to self-immolation if their fishermen were not returned.

Political Repercussions and Calls for Accountability

The incident has also ignited political criticism, with Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin accusing the government of negligence. He pointed to the families’ claims that authorities failed to act despite being notified about the fishermen’s disappearance. Stalin questioned the decision to allow fishermen to go out to sea during the cyclone and demanded accountability from the government for its inaction.

Stalin has called for increased compensation beyond the Rs 7 lakh already announced, arguing that the families deserve more substantial support in light of their loss. He has also urged the government to implement measures that would prevent such tragedies in the future, including ensuring life insurance coverage for all fishermen venturing out to sea.

The ongoing situation highlights the urgent need for improved safety measures and accountability in the fishing community, particularly in the face of natural disasters. As families continue to grieve, the demand for answers and effective action remains at the forefront of their concerns.
